    (see previous post)..In Japan they do things like what we used to many years ago when people had pride in their work and cared about their name and customers - from the mechanics to the dealership. When you bring a car in for service in Japan there are no predetermined times for work, they charge for the exact amount of time worked on your vehicle, they do only what needs to be done, and they get the vehicle back to the owner as fast as possible with no compromise in quality of work.

    Ive got one answer for you man.... FLAT RATE!!! its a killer in the dealerships with warranty and all repairs in general, im an apprentice at a GM shop and every car i work on i treat as my own, around me all i see is miserable techs rushing to be able to break even at the end of the paycheck. The warranty repairs times are so outrageous that being able to do it in the time given is almost impossible unless you rush and cut corners, Im really starting to rethink my career choice because i dont want to turn into a butcher mechanic and fight for hours at the end of a paycheck. I just want to get paid for my 8 hours or whatever and go home feeling like ive done a good job. Everyone loves to hate the dealerships and mechanics but its the system thats 90% of the problem, imagine if doctors were allowed a certain amount of time per surgery and they had their managers or supervisors yelling at them because their an hour over or so, kinda makes you think how bad E.R. fatalities would get. anyways sorry for the rant just wanted to share my thoughts.

      What you just explained there concerning hospitals is exactly whats about to happen with obamacare. There weren't enough Primary care physicians before obamacare now you add 35 million more people to the ranks and doctors will be forced to get as many patients in and out as they can in a day.

      I have my own shop and i just do the job right. If it takes me 8 hours to do a job that my hour calculator says should take 5.5, then so be it. i work 8 hours and the customer gets charged 5.5 (or close to) but they will be happy and come back again. ill sleep better. and it is easier to do as an owner because im not making employee rate to begin with.

      8 years later - and after the global events - I don’t think you could be any more right. I’m looking to get out of this industry on the shop floor. It was my hobby and making it my job took all the satisfaction out of it. My uncle who’s been a mechanic for decades warned me but I had to figure it out for myself.

    And I completely agree with your views on the conflict of interests at a dealership.

    • @sk8ersbus1
      @sk8ersbus1 9 років тому +1

      neomags And I 100% agree with you, not only is it IGNOMINIOUS and inexcusable for safety-sensitive jobs like ambulances to be subject to these mysterious breakdowns. But also school buses. It seems quite easy for bus companies (especially where I used to work) to cut corners, and make Band-Aid repairs on the cheap. Not caring about if the kids (or driver) are safe. Not caring about kids getting sick (or people outside the bus) from being subjected to blue smoke fumes stemming from engine wear and neglect. Not caring about making critical repairs that, if not made, could jeopardize the bus driver's CDL. It should be very frightening when a bus mechanic actually leaves that job in favor of anything else that rewards a good work ethic, leaving incompetent, lazy mechanics to work on the buses. Too many bus companies nowadays do not take PRIDE in their work.As for the Vt365 (6.0) engines, (which inherently lend themselves to poor school bus maintenance) he describes the inductive heating noise (7:10) from the glow plugs. Perhaps that's why VT365's always go thru so many injectors!!! And (7:40) "you need a new truck," that's exactly what International told the bus company, insinuating that they are THROWAWAY buses!!!

    Hi Bill, it is so true and what you are referring to involves all work levels of our country, leading to a disastrous economy, population alienation, and most of all, "Made in America" has become the trademark of cheap and poor quality. I am a baby boomer, it was not like that years past, we "Americans" could make miracles, a handshake (your honor) was your bond, workers/professionals would have pride in their work, regardless of what it was. For example, I am a disabled Veteran, one winter day, the trash collector saw my trash can next to my garage (i.e. not on the curb), knowing my condition, he got out in the snow and picked my trash regardless, he was from the "old school". Thank you for your videos and for sharing your honesty, your values, and principles with the community, Ciao, L

    • @darthgamer6080
      @darthgamer6080 8 років тому

      It all boils down to company policies and practices and how Americans don't take pride and dedication in their craftsmanship and work anymore. Money is the only real value that Americans cherish more than anything.

    • @lancelot1953
      @lancelot1953 8 років тому +1

      Emigdio Rogero When Dr. Deming came to Ford (I was there), to revitalize the company, he told the executive that our (Ford) problem was 85% management (white collar), 15% workforce (i.e. union). That we had to work the company from the top down, not the other way around.
      We then learned about the difference in the culture of professionalism between the Japanese worker who identify with his/her company where as we did not. We compared a part (full transmission) built to our (Ford) specs by our Japanese division vs. our Livonia plant. Both transmissions were within specs but the Japanese-built Ford Trans were "on the button" as far as specs and would last longer, shift smoother, etc... The study revealed the the Japanese worker paid more attention to his work, detail, workmanship...
      Finally, the study showed that the Japanese buyer wants quality and engineering, the American buyer wants low cost (cheap) and flashy add-on (stripes, chrome, wheels...).
      I learned a lot - our poor production record is a "cultural" issue. I know we can do better, I believe in America, Ciao, L (Veteran)

    I'm not a ford man but i do work at a particular German automotive economy car dealership. ( cough, cough, VW).... every word this man is saying is true. I know most the time people set these concepts off to the side to think that dealers/manufacturers don't work this way. That it is simply a conspiracy theory. Trust me when i say This is not a conspiracy theory!!!! I could not count how many times in the last year i have seen particular technologies released as new, when they have been around for decades, and watched manufacturers hype a particular idea to the heavens through comercialism. Another great example is the price of diesel. Vehicles keep getting bigger and heavier with more " safety, and electronic features" what this adds up to is a vehicle that gets worse mileage with a fuel that is far more expensive then gasoline, yet far cheaper to produce. my friends if you don't think automotive manufactures don't have ties to the fossil fuel industry your beyond naive. my point being there goal and occupation is to make massive profit ,while a select handful of people take pride, quality, and honor as the priority.
    P.S. Bill, you sir are a true man and one that has earned my respect thank you.

    This is EXACTLY why I drove six hours one way to replace the plastic charge air cooler pipe on my wife’s 2013 6.7 after it burst while she was towing a trailer full of horses. I’m sure a dealer could have done it same or next day being the quick and easy job it is, but I’ve had too many negative experiences with other mechanics working on my vehicles. If I do it myself, I know it’s done right.

    Your customers should appreciate your honesty and integrity. I also noticed you were looking straight into the camera to those who are watching directly in the eye the whole time. The passion and emotion in your voice and body language tells the viewers who and what you care about.....(Their Powerstroke and their truck)
    I'm a 2002 Ford F-250 Super Duty owner with a 7.3L Powerstroke diesel in it. You remind me of my boss who is the 3rd owner of our company. I'm a licensed HVAC technician and have been there since 2002 (14 years). My company has been in business since 1912 and my boss/3rd owner has been there since 1966 as an employee for the 2nd owner (1946-1986). He's a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran, so he demands only the best out of you at all times. He in turn can be hard to work for at times and has been through a lot of help over the years. I'm a USMC Veteran and my other best co-worker he has is also a U.S. Navy Veteran and has been there 40 years. He already knew I was what he was looking for when he first hired me. Do your best at all times and no bullshit excuses. People know who to call after they are tired of getting fucked around by the other places. Some of which are overpaid union employee companies. Tell the U.S. Military your problems for that day and demand to talk to your union steward to cry about it. And I quote : "get the fuck outta here...what's your problem anyway shitbag?"....."MOVE OUT...HUSTLE UP!" LMAO

    You are a very smart man, Bill. I work at a John Deere dealer in AB, Canada and our technicians that are still wet behind the ears have little pride. We fight to get them to do the job right, neat and make sure that the customer is happy. Some are only there for the paycheck, others are there because they love their work. I am the latter, I love being able to bring a smile to the customer's face when I see him a year from when I worked on his piece of equipment and ask him how it is running. We are in the customer service industry, we have to make the customer feel like he/she is being treated fairly. They need to know, that when they walk in the door, they are welcome to see their equipment in the shop, and that a skilled professional is working on it with the utmost pride. When a unit rolls out of the shop, it should be cleaner than when it rolled in, but the dealership doesn't want to spend that kind of $$. The ten minutes it takes me to vacuum a farmers cab, and wipe down the windows makes all the difference in the world, the customer will ask for me by name if i do that for them. It is a simple concept. Take a bit of pride in your work people. It is not that hard.

    Awesome videos Bill, I've owned toyota land cruisers for the last 27 or so years since I was 16, most of them diesels and I imported many from Japan into canada, the build quality and component strength is outstanding - designed to last hundreds of thousands of kms in countries with limited service if any. I do all of my own service on my cruisers (owned well over 40) and recently bought a 2000 f350 crewcab 7.3 longbox 4x4, first Ford ever, 380,000kms on the clock, a strong runner.

    When i first started watching your tubes i thought you were another part of the powerstroke cartel. This tube has changed my mind. I own a 2004 ford f350 4x4 6.0 powerstroke. Ive studied and studied and studied this engine for a year. I dont have a a lot of money to do all these expensive upgrades...You got some great things ( if your loaded ) My EGR cooler went and didnt have the couple grand it takes to even get a so called mechanic to do the work it needed. I studied some more. Well, I tore it down on the side of the road in 25 30 temps...took me 3 days because of rain/snow delays, but i did it. The truck started right up and has not over heated again. well....now we get into all the contaminates in the cooling system and sensors....wow. I've learned alot of things from these tubes and now have it running very nicely - lots of power. Its not overheating and i believe the head gaskets have somehow miraculously survived. I understand your frustrations with dealers and so called mechanics. Im one of those people who would be very hard to work for....If I make a mistake on my engine ( which i made 2 small ones - But corrected them after torturing myself for a bit for making them) I do take pride in what I do. Last time I let a garage work on my last truck the guy made it worse and I had to take it to a different shop and pay $700 for his mistakes. Im hoping i can get through the winter and get some bucks saved before the warm weather comes....I suspect Im gonna be doing the whole Job...BULLETPROOF ! my way. Thank You for all your information and helpfulness....Keep up the good work Bill !

    Even though this video is almost 6 years old, I've never seen it and I have say, this is spot on in every way. In 2012 I bought a 2003 6.0 F250 with 122k and I watched a lot of these videos before and after purchasing my truck. About 6 months after I got it, the truck developed a bad misfire, sounded like a locomotive until it warmed up then it ran fine. A few weeks passed and after trying everything I could (fuel additives, filters, batteries, etc) I finally decided to take it to my local Ford dealership, huge mistake. They told me I had ONE bad injector and went on and on about insignificant things like how the exhaust pipe was too close to the rear shock and then the service manager showed me "my coolant" they extracted......looked like they mixed orange coolant with oil and water. I called them out on it, service manager appeared shocked when I stuck my finger in it and smelled it. After a small disagreement, I told the manager I'll take my truck elsewhere. I requested the print out for the diagnostics, she thumbed through it, ripped about half of it off, handed the receptionist part of it and threw the other in a trash can as she stormed out of the office. Although I did not take my truck to Mike, I did find a very good shop an hour away from my house who fixed the truck for a hell of a lot less than I had been quoted and he also told me that I had FIVE bad injectors and the others were weak....got all 8 replaced, drove it home and it's been fine ever since. Never again will I go to anyone other than my mechanic or Mike.

    The last three times I took my 2000 7.3 to the Bill Currie Ford dealership here in Tampa Fl., they could not perform a wheel alignment, (the mechanic tried to use shims from “Advanced Auto” and could not get it right after 6 hours of waiting, a break job (break clip was stuck between the pad and rotor and squealed like hell after spending over a $1000.00 for new breaks and rotors), or find a bad needle bearing that was causing a bad vibration in the steering wheel. It's all about the dollars at most shops. Whether it's the owner or employee only worrying about payday. There are only two mechanics I will take my vehicle's to if I don't have time or facilities. That's because they think like bill here. They care more about their reputation than the dollars. A great job well done the first time is basically a license to print money. Your reputation will bring you the work. Thanks for the videos. I just bought my first powerstroke. I'm in the UK but completely agree with your sentiments. Why can't people take care. I've just had to have the rear window replaced in my car because a portion of the heating element had failed. Get the car home, go to get something out of the boot and the parcel shelf isn't attached to the boot so doesn't rise with the boot. Go to reattach and one of the mounts is now busted off. Wasn't like that when it went in. Then I notice the glass they have put in isn't privacy glass. No care, no pride.

I'm in the Navy and some people show up just for the paycheck, without regard to the mission... If I ever purchase a Powerstroke, I know who I'd send my truck to! Take care.

    I used to work for forklift dealers and it was pretty much how you described. We had X number of hours to do a job under warranty and if we exceeded that for whatever reason they came down on us. They would shift overages on warranty work onto work orders for non-warranty repairs.

    Lots of respect for bill. I worked in a dealership body shop and I see this with the other techs in my shop. I pride myself on doing the job right the first time and not having comebacks. My concept is if I repair the car right no one should be able to tell I repaired it.

    I once had a guy break down outside my house after taking his car for some work at a main dealer - the engine cover wasn't actually bolted on, the hose clips from both ends of the top coolant hose was missing, and had it even been topped up with coolant, it had dumped it all out and overheated.

    had my truck serviced at the local Ford dealer (2011 6.7L), oil change, and a fuel filter change, drove the truck from AZ, to the bay area in CA and back, about 2 hours from home, truck starts smoking, and dies.. opened the hood and found fuel sprayed everywhere.. the tech that replaced the fuel filter did NOT put the fitting back on all the way and it blew off..I pushed it back on, engine started right up, and I was on the road again.. not a problem with it since..same dealer also got grease all over my driver's seat once.. I bitched my ass off about it, and made them clean it...they also always leave the underside of the engine an oily mess when they change the oil..i thought I had a rear main seal leaking, but it was just the mess left from an oil change a week earlier.. pisses me off...total lack of care/pride

    100% on point Bill.
    My friend Jim has a 6.0 Excursion, he has spent money on it to correct the 6.0's shortcomings with a couple of local "experts" and it is the exact scenario you just described of "no pride in the details", new oil leaks, rattles, A/C not working, etc . Meanwhile Jim's friend Kelly shipped his Excursion to you, paid slightly less (compared to Jim paying twice) for the work done (the whole 6.0 improvement theme), Kelly picked his up and drives it with zero "loose ends" 100% happy.
    Just to make the point, both owners are commercial pilots and very ANAL about details by nature of their occupation.
    Doing work to a standard not a price is an extraordinarily accurate statement.
    Like I said above, 100% on point Bill.

    As a Ford dealership technician (Not diesel, or at least extremely little, we have two guys that focus on that) I have to say your description is sadly pretty damn accurate. The way we're paid breeds greed and sloppy work in a lot of guys. Far as showing up late/leaving early goes, I only leave early if I'm outta work and my bay and boxes are cleaned up but that doesn't go for a lot of guys.

People just don't care about what they are doing, or how well they do it, they only think of themselves and the money they are getting.

    Such is the way of our future work force.Not very reassuring.I was told from a young age by my father that if it's anything worth doing it's worth doing right.I take those words with me everywhere and apply it in anything that I do.Whether its constructing a new home,fixing a truck or simply making the bed.
    I had a 6.0 powerstroke that we sent in to the dealerships to "fix" right.To get all the quirks out as we wanted a long term truck that was dependable.$10,000 later we still had the same truck and just an evolved set of issues.
    We finally put in a bulletproof kit done by a small shop(oil reroute and custom oil cooler and egr and banks big hoss bundle as well as a total of about$30,000 in upgrades) Finally a decent running truck with cool temps,no leaks and then some douche steals it from the dealerships locked compound.
    I just wished more people and customers would take a stand against this type of attitude in the industry and force big corps such a FORD,CHEV,DODGE to take an honest approach and set a higher standard to their products.Without us, the consumer, buying their products they wouldn't be able to carry on very far.people need to become more vocal and be more demanding and less passive and stop being sheep that believe the big corps are out to hold your hand and be your best friend.You the consumer are a huge fat dollar sign and nothing more.Time for more boycotts!

    I'm always a fan of Ford. I'm just worn out having to explain to my customers that they have been taken advantage of over and over by crooks. It is tough to explain to someone that just spent several thousand dollars to "FIX" something that was NOT FIXED and they have to spend more money to redo what they have already been charged for.

    The way it is supposed to work is the Service Department makes and pays all of the bills, salaries, basically the overhead. The problem is the dealers don't pay good tech's for crap. If your wrenches aren't turning, you aren't making any money. They refuse to pay the good Tech's a decent wage and take care of them. What happens is, they get out of the business. I did. The 4 years I work for a dealer, only one comeback. I hated them with a passion. That means I screwed up which I hate. So yes, it is pride in your work. The other thing is the good people eventually get out of the business.

    I have been a mechanic since high school (just over ten years), and I agree, there seams to be an epidemic of "No pride" in this industry (and many others). I take great pride in my work and what I do, and that is what has gotten me where I am today (being ASKED to join shops, JOB SECURITY). But having worked in stand alone shops as well as dealerships (been with Toyota for 5 yrs now, and a brief stay at Ford) I can say that cuts in salary are part of the problem with ALL service industries. If you hire a mechanic at $10/hr. . . well, you get what you pay for, oil caps being left off to spray oil around, lug nuts being torqued improperly and wheels flying off, connectors being loose, etc, all that is to be expected. You leave a mechanic WONDERING if he/she can afford housing for his family and his mind is no longer on the job at hand. There is a problem in this country where the CEO of a company thinks they deserve to earn $2 million this year instead of $1.5 million and so they take it out of the workers check (the worker used to make $60k and now is down to $40k "big deal"), well that pay cut they just gave the worker comes back to bite them in the ass in "customer comebacks" (complaints), BUT the CEO is not the one who has to deal with it, cause they have hired service managers to take the hit, and in the meantime, the ceo gets to complain to the service manager about "loss of proffits" (shit rolls down hill).
    I will admit, I am human, and as humans we ALL make mistakes (or as my dad likes to say "shit happens, if shit didn't happen we would all be constipated" haha). But the hack jobs i see through our shop tells me there is a bigger problem, part of it is a lack of pride in what you do, and a big part is the fact that this country is well overdue for a "WORKERS rebellion". That is my rant for now, i love what you post (as a mechanic AND 7.3 owner),

I turn it off when the glow plug light goes out and it starts every time all the time.Ive been running it like this for a little over a year now.Anyway I maxed out my credit card and still haven't paid them for the starter.Sure wish I was in your neck of the woods.Any ideas?🙏

    I was raised in the car business, was always taught a properly run dealership the backend mechanic shop should keep the doors open pay all the expenses. The front end new car sales should be pure profit. If you keep the customer happy in the back end with good honest reliable service don't be in to buy new cars. So many of the dealerships today are owned by big conglomerations that are strictly out for the profit. That's filter down and Mechanic. Most mechanics are paid book value, they get really good at one job like overhauling transmissions. If a transmission overhaul is but valued at 8hours and the mechanic gets it done in eight they get paid for 16. That's why they have their work ethic it's all driven by the $and not by pride in their work. Personally I like to buy from a small dealership where the mechanics are really good.

    Same thing happened to us at a Chrysler dealership, total lack of pride in work. Wanted a change of fluids. They call and say we have a rear main seal leak ( 93 Jeep 4.0). However we already determined that it was a leaking oil sender unit and changed it ourselves, but had them change it anyway. We call asking for an update on the work, and the techs who are working on our vehicles were unavailable. The vehicle is ready, we drop the $2000 and call it good, open the hood to find a missing splash cover, call em up, were told its not needed, we call BS. another few days go by and all seems well for now, until the diff covers started to leak, noting sloppy work with the seal work and overall poor workmanship.
    Pappy dropped $14k on a torchdown roof for our 1956 home from a supposedly upright roofing company, only to find that the screws holding the flashing to the fascia were drilled in crooked, allowing water penetration onto the NLA old growth cedar timber, along with choppy use of brown caulking.

    Pride in your work is becoming a thing of the past. Here recently a 6.0 came in our shop that had a crank, no start, hot. Other tech in the shop hooked up the scanner and saw that there was low pressure while cranking and ordered an HPOP and IPR without any other diagnosis. "OH, I am busy with some buses, can you work on it?" Knowing what little he had done and what I have seen from your's and other videos, neither "fix" of his fit the bill. Stand pipes, D-plugs fixed the problem.

They gave it back with a broken air air tube, and 8mm exhaust studs through drilled for 1/4 inch bolts and a bunch of missing or mismatched hardware. The dealer claimed it came in this way, I assure you it was not, the air tube was broken by the tech that was in too much of a hurry to take it off so he bent it out of the way breaking it in the process.
