    Love the breakdown. Towing up here in Utah during the summer really made me realize and understand how altitude, humidity (What humidity), and outside temps really come into play when it comes ensuring my ECT and EOT ▲ is within the threshold of a healthy cooler. Like you said Bill, it all depends on whether those temps come down after the increased load.

    Hi Bill! I just met Ti..super nice by the way good to see her at the shop! I had my big black 05 dually in for a bad IPR valve. Mike and Scott of course took great care of me! I was just thinking about that delta thing yesterday and now here's a vid. I guess my truck is fine my eot never gets that high even pulling the camper. My truck is my baby and I worry about it like a kid lol. You guys are the best. I've never seen any shop that takes care of their costumers like you do! One of these days I'm gonna bring my 76 F-100 up there. It's a cool truck I put together. Anyway, Cheers!!

    Thanks for the vid, I monitor both these temps in my 05 6.0 excursion...the delta is almost always 8° running around normal and goes up to 18-20° pulling steep grades loaded with our gear and camp trailer. I never worried abt the difference because it would almost immediately come back down to 8° after topping the grade.

    Very good information to a diesel lover. I, O will put it to work for the longevity of my beloved 2002 f350 7.3 powerstroke. I have studied and rebuilt various parts to my "BUFFORD" for the satisfaction and comfort of knowing what is happening in my 7.3. I have hauled RVs from coast to coast and the California hills and climate will through you for a loop if you do not know your Powerstroke! Hands down and facts are essential to a diesel lover such as myself. Fact of the matter is if someone were to offer me a new replacement for my 2002, 7.3, I would probably grin, spit and snicker in that order. You guessed it, I LOVE my TRUCK!

    Hi bill, love the channel. Ive learned a lot from watching it over the years. I am a heavy equipment mechanic in the Air Force as well as the fleet manager, uncle sams employees are stretched thin. I work on mostly construction equipment and hydraulic systems, and we have a fleet of super dutys, half of them 5.4’s and half are 04 duramaxes and 2 6.0s which are junk of course. We have 4 6.7s which are great but sit a lot, causing issues. Nevertheless, I own a 2016 f250 6.7, deleted, 200hp tune, baby it and never tow. I run archoil religiously and just bought their new formula. I rarely tow. I run clean fuel only, and I have a disaster prevention kit for the cp4. This truck has never skipped a beat, bought it with 10k miles in 2018 and now have just hit 70k miles. I drive a lot, but where I live is a lot of backroad, which is why I deleted it, because the truck would want to regen but couldnt. In the winter, on my drive to work which is about 10 minutes, the truck just barely reaches operating temp. I have an oil pan heater that warms the pan up at 1am, for when I start the truck around 5:30AM. I’m worried about engine cycles. I understand this might accelerate the wear of the engine greatly, i’m starting to look at 2017-2020 diesel super duties to trade mine in for, because at 100k these trucks lose value heavily which im sure you know. I could trade this truck in for about 42k right now. I owe 7k on it which i’m going to pay off soon but I just bought a house as well. I guess what I’m asking for is your opinion, would you advise getting rid of this thing before it hits 90k? Or should I just keep it? I appreciate it.

    Good explanation and reminder. We just got back from a camping trip and climbing Pacheco Pass with our 40' RV and '04 bulletproofed F250.The Pass itself isn't so bad, but in 110 degrees is can be very concerning to watch that delta spread (using the torque app) 20+ degrees. But it eventually went back down to under a 10 degree spread on the flatland afterwards.

    Several years ago I bought a very well taken care of '03 6.0 with 138k miles on it. Shortly after purchasing I started getting a check engine light anytime the truck was pulled hard that went away the very next time the key was cycled. I had tried to check this code several times but diagnostics showed nothing. It wasn't until I started running a controller and monitoring my temps that I realized at 30° delta I would trip the engine light. An oil cooler and add-on coolant filter later, a high delta was around 20°. I HIGHLY recommend a controller to any new diesel owner just for the simple fact that you can monitor anything on the truck that puts out an electrical signal. It also increased my mpg's as much as 5 mpg (driven sensibly). Definitely worth every dollar.

    I was towing my 15k fifth wheel up a 7 mile very very steep grade, semis have to hit there flashers on it. I saw 240 by the top, truck is a 16 6.7 powerstroke, it started to cool off even before the climb was over. Glad I found this video

    Thank you for the video. I have a 1999 7.3 and I did notice that my oil Temps where hanging high. I hit 260 oil temp towing. And regularly hit 220 without towing on a nice hot day

    I was pulling a 37 ft. 5th wheel up a long steep grade with my 6.0 ford when I noticed a light on my dash check gauges. Checked my scan gauge and water was at 240. It never went over that .oil was 260 more or less topped the hill and temps. recovered pretty quickly. Never lost any coolant .fan was fully locked up. All in all I was pretty proud of the old girl.

    Good video, Bill. This reminds me of my heat transfer class back in college. The video highlights the importance of filtration and maintenance of the cooling system. After so many heat cycles, precipitates will form scale on the heat transfer surfaces. In technical words, fouling. This reduces the efficiency of heat transfer. And if severe enough, inhibits heat transfer.

    Pulling my 17K camper up a hill, it will jump my oil to 230 and when my coolant goes to 220, it kicks the fan on and will drop it to 205ish and my oil temp will slowly start coming down. It’s scary looking but it works. Nice video Bill.

    Bill, the 310 Waukesha motor that was installed in a 1755 Oliver did not have a oil cooler. It was a 310 CID with 85HP. The 1955 Oliver tractors that had the same motor were turbo charged did have a oil cooler. So yes there are diesels that did not have oil coolers.

    I understand the delta i just wonder what safe oil temps are when going down the road for a 6.0 my semi’s run 230-240 degrees depending on load and grades and I’m always heavy. But that seems a bit hot for a smaller Diesel engine. My temps run depending on speed and outdoor temps 5-12 degrees running 75-80 mph in 90-100+ degrees idle is 2-3 degrees difference

    Thanks for the explanation. This happened to me when pulling a trailer up a steep hill during the summer. The temperature did come down but got me worry as the oil temperature when above 236 degrees.

    We have a 08 6.4 EarthRoamer but was recommended to change to standard coolant because in remote places we could not gold in local gas stations.
    This did happen in blending Utah when a older hose ruptured and we lost coolant.
    What do you think go back to Gold or carry on with green standard.

    The old a4-236 perkins does not have a cooler. Used in a lot of Massy Ferguson farm tractors. A lot of John Deere utility tractors have sandwich coolers. 4 239, 4 276, 6 359. Ive seen a lot of the 6359 with the paint discolored on the block from what I'd guess is inadequate cooling

    This is a smart man. Coming from an air force physicist, I can say that this guy knows what hes talking about. He may not know the mathematical constituents, but he understands the concepts and can think critically. They dont teach that in college. I used to be a Ford tech and I wish these videos were around when I was a tech. Very informative. Good Job! I love watching these.

      All modern engines have oil cooling pistons even Harleys form the early 80s. Diesels need them even more.

    Hi Bill. Thanks for the explanation on the Delta. However, I am old school and in older vehicles you had a problem with coolant temps at or above boiling point (212). Obviously it is now different. I have noted the EOT/ECT on the tuner since your dealer proof of my engine (very happy with it) and on some hard pulls have seen 215. The stock engine temp gauge seems to indicate this is fine. So, what temp for ECT is considered too high for the 6.0?

    Great vids. I am OTR hotshot, 2012 F350 6.7L 231,000 miles. I messed up royally, Had a coolant drip, DOT sees this and they will place me out of service. Did not have time to fix so my genius ass put coolant stop leak in. Stopped leak, good to go, so I thought. Hooked up my 40' gooseneck and off I went to my pick up point. I don't have a numbers ECT gauge, it just reads L or H. It stays in the middle so I am assuming about 200 degrees.
    Well my ECT stayed about 200 degrees and my EOT went up to 240 degrees on flat highway.
    Guess what is being replaced this morning? Yes, oil cooler, that stop leak don't play, so don't play with stop leak.

    What is a reasonable max oil temp and ECT EOT delta? The change in these is as you said to be expected, however where should you start getting concerned. Particularly my question is in reference to a 17 super duty 6.7.

    Great video thanks for all of the great information. I've been looking through your videos in regards to the PCM. I have a F350 6.0 with 50k miles We deleted the the EGR cooler by putting plugs in each end and also used a SCT X3 tuner. The reason we did this is because my turbo locked up or the veins locked up in the turbo so I thought while replacing the turbo we would delete as well. But now I have everything back together the truck runs great for a short bit and shuts down and the tuner tells me PCM keep alive memory, sorry I don't remember the number. Any recommendations?

    So when do you worry? At what temp do you worry about the oil? 250? I was told there is a critical temp for everything. So what is critical oil temp? Coolant temp? Exhaust gas temp? My '01 7.3 cruises around with egt around 650-700. Pulling a trailer with tractor and bush hog on it (about 12,500 lbs) egt stays around 950-1000 degrees. Am I about to burn a piston? Melt a valve?

    Ok I have a 2017 ford and I pull a lot of weight about 85% of the time, now I’ve seen my ect at 230° and Eot 250° some time higher depending on the wind and mountains,
    So my fix was a high flow low temp thermostat so far it’s doing great but the temps still come up often depending how hard I drive her.
    Now my other question is am I ruining this truck by not running factory specs? Truck is deleted , no EGR‘s , cold air intake and I’m fixing to have a upgraded hot and cold side piping. Please let me know your answers

    Coolant maintenance is important I have a customer with a fleet of 6.7 rams and they all have needed the heater cores replaced at 250,000 miles due clogging up from never changing the coolant . I'm surprised the oil coolers have survived .

    So I was pulling a trailer full of furniture from moving and my delta was 60 degrees off, no idea how I didn’t burn the fucker to the ground. But the oil temp was 260 and the coolant was 200, but it cooled back down after pulling the hill. Do I need to replace my oil cooler? Also been having issues with the egr cooler and maybe that has something to do with it too. Figured I should probably delete it and replace the oil cooler while I’m there but that’s more money down the drain
