    I've personally seen 5.3 gas engines with over 600,000 hard miles. All original internals. Mine is getting close to 200,000 with the water pump being the only thing I've replaced. There's something majorly wrong with modern diesels when gas motors can easily outlast them

    I'd love to come and be a fly on the wall in your shop. Here in the UK we work for customer's who want the cheapest job doing with the cheapest parts. I'm hoping to get out of the trade once I've sorted myself out for this very reason. Complete false economy and hugely frustrating.

    Soo many things my Mama never told me! The mountain has come to Mosses...at 72, retired x3, ASE certified Diesel bus tech..I really appreciate your hard earned knowledge. I bought my 96 F250 Superduty 7.3 Powerstroke new. I put it on Amzoil 10-40 marine synthetic at 30k, changed out all filters annually (10-12k miles). She's had some minor mileage related issues, but at 263K..still rocking.

    Yeah Bill, I bought a 97 F350 no start, stealership got him for over $1800 and it still wouldn't start, I bought it off him for $1500 275k miles I was 2nd owner, took me less than a hour to figure out it was the fuel tank, front tank screen was so bad never seen anything so clogged and rear tube was broke off.

  • @jagxj64

    I have a late 04 F350 that I added a blue spring mod and fuel pressure gauge to a long time ago, one day it just dropped from 73 PSI to around 40PSI and I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the issue (165,000 miles). Fuel pressure did not change, then I checked the pressure regulator, the tiny o-ring that is on the little poppet was worn, replaced it and it went right back to 73PSI. This 30 cent part could have destroyed my motor had I not had a pressure gauge since it was not noticeable driving the truck. Just another thing to look out for.

    My neighbor had a 7.3 black Eddie Bauer that she hauled her 6 kids around in. Her mom ran the books at the local ford dealer and she had one of the first in town. 40k in she was T boned at a light by a Suburban that ran a red. Took out a light pole then landed on a fire hydrant. Water came gushing through the dash vents. She walked away from that with all 6 kids unharmed. Impressive vehicle.

    Boy has this video shown up with unbelievable timing. My ’05 F350 CC LB 4x4 King Ranch with 159,000 miles was experiencing hot/hard start after sitting for 10-15 minutes. I’ve been using Archoil in the fuel and oil for several years.
    I took it to my local Ford dealer, and by some miracle, was able to get a tech to bring his computer out to the service drive and hook it up. After he did his thing, I asked him what his best guess was. He said
    “If this were my truck, I’d put a new fuel pump on it”. He had been under the truck and notified me that the fuel pump “looked like the original”. So, thats what I did. $800 later (cost of part and labor to install) I determined that while it was time to replace the fuel pump, it didn’t help the situation. While tinkering, I also put in the blue spring kit to boost the fuel pressure. While that was fairly ez, it didn’t seem to have helped either. Made an appointment for 8/2. Went camping for four days, pulling our 18k lb 5th wheel about 200 miles round trip. Hoping and praying the engine wouldn’t crater and leave us stranded. Watched other vids that explained the dummy plugs and standpipe o-ring issue would be the cause of my hot/hard start situation. Between the camping trip and the appointment today, I decided to go ahead and buy new standpipe and dummy plugs to ensure the parts were on site when needed. I had convinced myself that those o-rings were the issue.
    Got a call from the Ford mechanic a few hours ago. He stated that he couldn’t duplicate the problem. Well thats just great, I’m thinking. Picked up the truck and brought it home. We have another trip scheduled for the 18th of nearly 600 miles rt. I’m thinking that theres a good chance thing thing will leave us stranded on the side of the road. Sat down to watch this video, and I’m telling you, it was a Godsend. Explains whats going on, and for what it’s worth, I concur. BTW, the truck is running pretty good since I took it to the dealer. I guess the combination of the new fuel pump and the blue spring kit did some good after all.
    Thanks, Bill. I cannot WAIT to get my truck to you for a dose of your shops magic.

      b w If it's not starting when it's hot. Change the dummy plugs. Also the ipr valve will just shut the whole engine down. So keep a extra one with you they ain't to hard to change on the side of the road.

My early 04 6.0 with 215k lost an injector and turned out fuel pump was only at 5lbs at idle, replaced it and the injector and back to run'n like a champ again, I worry about my original HPOP, but keep an eye on IPR and all still good.

    Great explanation. I remember magazines and others bad mouthed the Excursions as being too big, too fuel hungry.. Now everyone wants one.. Didn't get it at the time as you now see Toyota Sequoias which are huge, under powered, fuel hogs and just as large all over the place. Fickle pubic I guess..

    I just changed oil in an '08 3500 6.4 powerchoke for a guy I work for and it had metal shavings on the oil plug magnet. Only 99,000 on it. And this truck was put to pasture at 30,000 because it's not reliable for towing anything other than a zero turn.

      50 pounds at idle or was it really tested under driving conditions, because if all you have is 50 at idle that isn't that great at all, it will drop when your foot drops on the go pedal.

  • @Mikeywil0003
    @Mikeywil0003 7 років тому

    I think that leaning out a gasoline motor causing it to scatter parts is completely different than this type of failure. Just for the fact that air fuel ratio is not as vital in a diesel. A gas burner needs to operate between 12:1 and 15:1 and relies heavily on precision metered air and fuel. In the case of a diesel, it can operate as rich as 15:1 or as lean as 60:1, and most diesels have no method for metering air. Power and engine speed in a diesel are regulated by varying the air fuel ratio through how much fuel is injected, unlike a gas burner that is regulated through adding air and fuel at a static ratio. Injector lubrication and cooling is the only reason this problem happens, not because the combustion process is starved for fuel.

    I got rid of a 2 year old 30,000 mile Chevy Beretta from being pissed off with it. Repeated auto trans slippage and jerking, short lived brakes, coolant smell when running the heater and cold engine piston slap. It had replaced an 84 Cavalier which was a piece of shit as was the 81 Dodge Omni before it. Traded the Beretta for a new Corolla in 98 and have had rock solid reliability ever since. 1 Neon, 1 Caravan, 2 HHRs and 2 Equinoxes all trouble free too. Beretta was my 1st new car and it was a major let down for sure. Probably by now been recycled into a Samsung fridge or Kia...

    • @sneakysnakepie1
      @sneakysnakepie1 7 років тому

      John Ferguson cold piston slap was to decrease wear old cold starts. Now if it had a tick when warm it was probably lifters. For coolant smell with the heat it was probably the heater core was leaking. The beretta wasn't a bad car if you did maintenance to it.

In mid April 2015 you have done every thing I knew at the time based on the education you taught me through your youtube videos. The easiest way I can think of would be for you to buy an aluminum secondary fuel filter cap with an 1/8" NPT fitting in the middle, you can find them from multiple retailers. The NPT fitting allows you to insert a pressure sensor and monitor fuel pressure that way.

  • @garykerney2488

    I thought this was only on the early 6.0? If its an 05 doesn't it have the new fuel pump?

  • @Craidren

    So you sold him an excursion knowing it was going to have that problem? Why didn't you replace the fuel pump before the customer got his hands on the truck?
    You know your stuff and I don't doubt that but, why did you sell a vehicle that was on the brink of death?
    You probably didn't emphasize that his recently purchased vehicle was going to blow a piston if he didn't replace the fuel pump. I honestly don't think it was his fault.

    One thing I've never understood about the ambulances is that they use diesels. They're using an engine in an emergency situation that needs time to warm up and can't be stomped on right away. Which obviously they have to do all the time.

    • @Krankie_V
      @Krankie_V 7 років тому +4

      ambulances are incredibly heavy. the extra torque from a diesel engine is definitely desired to make sure that bitch moves when they need it to

    • @brianmccarthy8215
      @brianmccarthy8215 7 років тому

      also the fact that ambulances idle for hours at a time to keep all of the equipment running. Gas engines suffer from carbon buildup, and are very inefficient at idle.

      @mph5896 7 років тому

      The new v10 gasser Ambulances are much quicker/much more reliable than the 6.0l diesel used up until 09 in the Van Chassis. .

    • @mph5896
      @mph5896 7 років тому

      In the mid to late 80's there were issues with gasoline fuel spurting from the filler necks in Gas E350's causing fires in Ambulances. This "changed" the culture in EMS to switch to Diesel Ambulances. Sounds stupid, but EMS has a lot of "tradition" it uses.

      All engines need warmup time, that isn't special for diesels.

    Ok.....so I understand on my '01 7.3L, with 219k......
    I need to replace my fuel pump and clean the screens correct ???

      Good Times go to harbor freight, buy a fuel pressure gauge kit for 20 bucks and check your fuel pressure

    • @countrykid1640
      @countrykid1640 7 років тому +2

      Good Times put a mechanical fuel pressure gauge on it. If you can get 60 psi your doing good. I would replace the pump and clean screens. About 50 or less and you can start to cause damage

    Would it be better to put a aftermarket fuel pump on like maybe a air dog or one of the other ones on the market? That way it would filter better and if the motor went it would be a piece of cake to fix.

    Does the obs 7.3 have those little fuel screens that cause loss of fuel pressure and severe engine failure?

    • @PatrickBaptist

      Yes, I've bought one before that was a no start dude paid the dealer more than I bought it off him because they couldn't figure it out.

  • @garrickberger2699

    How about a '97 7.3 w/248K miles? It's been surging on startup, lately - is that a fuel issue? Does it have the fuel tank filters?

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist 7 років тому

      Yes they do, I bought one off a guy and paid less than he paid the dealer not to get it running because the screen was cloged in the front tank and broke off in the rear, this also causes your fuel pump to take a dump on you, your pump is a mechanical one not electrical and it's a real pain to deal with, under the turbo behind the fuel bowl. The truck had something like 260k on it.
      Also check your EBP sensor tube if it's clogged that can cause it as well, or the sensor might be bad too. It's mounted there in front of the HPOP with a tube going out the bottom into the passenger side exhaust manifold.

    If you ever want to buy an early 2000's Ford Excursion from Canada, we can source them for you from here and ship them from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada, just three hours North of Fargo ND. There are currently a many advertised for sale here in Canada now. Just an FYI in case you are looking for another source for the Excursions. Great video BTW.

      a truck from Canada would be a hard sell here in the states. People do not like vehicles from up north. They want them from down south where there is no snow or salt.

    What does the tip breaking off the injector have to do with the fuel pump? I know bill is alluding to proper preventative maintenance on the fuel system but did the fuel pump cause the blown cylinder or the broken injector? Seems obvious

    • @amiliogonzalez6711
      @amiliogonzalez6711 Рік тому

      The injector failed because it got too hot from a lack of fuel flow which acts as a coolant as well for the injector & eventually caused it to overheat and completely fail at the tip causing a catastrophic cylinder failure.

    does a 1996 7.3 have this problem? my dad's f250 has never had a fuel pump replaced that I know of. 365k+ miles on it

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist 7 років тому

      It uses a mechanical fuel pump but the same applies and they are so much of a pain to deal with, they sit right under the turbo behind the fuel bowl on top of the engine.... All the old body style 7.3s I've owned I deleted to stock fuel pump and did frame mounted filters and pump.
      IF that is really the stock fuel pump on that truck he is just waiting for it to take a dump on him, they usually don't last longer than 250k at best.

    Exactly! People prefer to invest money on a SUV that has an heavy duty frame . Not like this new SUV that don't even have a frame . Rotors are held by braces screwed into the aluminum body ..smh 🤔

      Mike Panocatapolis I just called Ford about my '01 and mine only has the one in the tank (verified by my vin).
      So I'm sure yours is the same.
      Btw, $515 😫

      ive worked on all years 7.3's obs are in the valley. super duties under driver door. also no fuel pump on the front of your engine. there is a high pressure oil pump on the front of your engine. yes drop to tank or pull your bed whichever you want to do, you can do a delete of the screens in the tank or clean or replace with new filters.

    • @wraith511802003
      @wraith511802003 7 років тому

      Well there is the fuel injection pump, and then there is the fuel pump in the tank. SO, i think he is talking about the one on the engine as well as the one in the tank.

    • @sethmoore6565
      @sethmoore6565 7 років тому

      Mike Panocatapolis no there is not a fuel pump on top of a 7.3 produced from 1999-2003 there is one in top in the valley on a 7.3 produced from 1994.5-1997. You might be thinking of the HPOP.
