  • Michael Jordan shows you how to defeat a 3-2 zone defense. He beats a triple team with a GIVE AND GO. Team basketball! You must stick to MJ man to man, or he will destroy you for 102 points in 3 quarters.
    Man on man pressure was crucial, especially away from the ball. You couldn't allow players space away from the ball, in place of body contact and handchecking. Old school passing teams would eat you alive. Zones work against ballhogs. The Jordan Rules: The guiding principle is that a defender is never left to guard Jordan unaided. Jordan's position on the floor dictates whether the Pistons trap him with a second defender or have the second defender play "help and recover" (that is, run at Jordan to stop his dribble, but then scramble back to his own man; Salley is a master at this ploy). The closer Jordan is to the basket, the more the Pistons go with the trap. When he is above the sideline hash mark (28 feet from the baseline), they usually play help and recover. Even when Jordan is far from the basket, perhaps bringing up the ball as a point guard on a wide-open floor, Detroit runs a second player at him, someone like Salley or Rodman. This reduces the amount of open court that he has to work with and often forces him to give up the ball to a teammate. The Pistons always want someone else to handle the ball. Not sometimes. Always. When Jordan has the ball on the wing, the Detroit player guarding him forces him toward defensive help. Most often that means turning Jordan to the right when he's on the left side of the floor and to the left when he's on the right side. If Jordan happens to get isolated with one man and is in a potential scoring position, the Piston defender will try to force him to go left. They think he makes a stronger, more explosive move to his right. So does Jordan. When Jordan tries to run a pick-and-roll, Detroit traps him. That means that two men, the one guarding Jordan and the one guarding the Bull setting the pick, run at him. The Pistons do this with remarkable efficiency, partly because that second defender is usually the 6 ft. 11 in. Salley or the 6 ft. 11 in. Laimbeer. The tall trappers make it almost impossible for Jordan to deliver the ball to a teammate rolling toward the basket, and their aggressive charge toward Jordan usually forces him to retreat. When Jordan posts up near the basket, Detroit typically puts three men on him, with Dumars most often behind him, using his strong hips and legs to "body" Jordan away from the basket. When the entry pass comes in from the point guard, Thomas leaves that guard and double-teams Jordan. If that means the point guard is free, so be it. Meanwhile, another defender, perhaps Laimbeer or Salley, will have come over and planted himself in the lane, maybe on the baseline side, maybe toward the middle. Dumars will then turn Jordan toward that help. Jordan loves the baseline. "Even though there's less room down there, I can be more creative," he says. But by and large, the Pistons take it away from him. When Jordan comes off a screen set near the baseline -- his most frequent maneuver when he's playing shooting guard -- a host of Jordan Rules come into play. Dumars must follow him around the screen -- no matter if he has to go into the bleachers -- to prevent Jordan from making a backdoor cut and receiving an alley-oop pass for an almost certain dunk. The Piston -- usually Laimbeer -- guarding the Bull setting the pick will step out to make Jordan receive the ball farther from the basket. In addition -- and this is important -- that man will guard against Jordan's making a "tight curl" off the top of the screen and suddenly looping back into the middle to take a short pass on the dead run, a circumstance that is almost always disastrous for the defense. In most cases Jordan will have to step back and take the pass on the wing. Then Thomas will come over, creating a double team, and the process begins all over again. If Jordan puts the ball on the floor, at least two players stay on him, pushing him toward even more help. If he passes, the weakside defenders adjust to play two Pistons against four Bulls or one against three. As long as Jordan is out of the picture, they love those odds. EVERYTHING the Pistons did, other teams did when facing Jordan. Teams like the Boston Celtics ran zones in the 80's. Only a lazy defender would be called for illegal defense. Team passing can take a team out of a zone pretty quick. Zones work against ballhogs

    With the 3-second rule u cant run a TRUE zone now. A matchup zone at best..

    If you also want to see MJ against zone-defense, watch his games at UNC, because in college ball, you get the true meaning of a zone defense, and Jordan shot 54% from the floor in his 3 years with the Tar Heels.

    these classic late 80's early 90s clips just bring me back to my childhood. wow we were so lucky to have the nba in its prime godbless all the real hoops fans 4rm everywhere white black asian latino european spaniard african whatever...we all love this game. we all love MIKE the g.o.a.t. 4everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. yeah the knicks use to REALLY foul..

    There was more true zone in Jordans era, Centers parked in the lanes and did not have to worry about defensive three seconds. Jordans scoring would increase today, wide open lanes, can't impede a players progress, no contact circle under the hoop, hell he would have shot 30 free throws against Pistons and Knicks with that no contact circle

    The trick to defeat a zone defense, is the ability to move WITHOUT the ball. Able to cut through the defense without the ball, and getting the pass at your sweet spot will def kill any zone def. ;)

    And people say Jordan only faced iso. Jordan faced more traps and doubles than any of todays players. All these idiots have to do is watch a few of his games to see this, but they wont cuz they are afraid of being wrong. They are afraid that kobe may not be as great as they thought he was.

    There were no zone defenses allowed during the time of this clip and yet you see the formation of a 3-2 zone when Jordan was at the top of the key. So the point is that when people say Jordan didn't face zone defenses like Kobe does now, only needs to see this clip.

    He has veteran experience because he knows what it's like to win a championship. Nothing can make him nervous now because he's been in that situation already. He's obviously not going to have the experience of Shaq or Sam Cassell but he's not going to panic in certain situations like other players his age would.

  • @LakersDynasty42
    @LakersDynasty42 15 років тому +3

    My point was that he's not gonna panick like a lot of other players his age would because he's played (and won) on the biggest stage in the NBA.

    Scrambling back to his own man, aka "help and recover" is an pre-zone (2002)concept. Nowaday, a player can stand in between two players without having to guard somebody in a man to man defense.

    The only area where Kobe has MJ beat is the amount of hair on their heads
    If Kobe went up against the "Bad Boys", he'd be an MVP "Most Valuable Patient" in the hospital : p

    Beautiful moving without the ball........which Kobe sucks at.

  • @Civsuccess2
    @Civsuccess2 16 років тому

    Zone defense is a complete version of help defense. In pre-illegal defense era. Defender has to get really close to his man. Or, an illegal defense will be called. In modern time, a defensive player can be far away from his man. This reduces reaction time of a help defense to a penetrator from 5 steps to 3 steps.

  • @Civsuccess2
    @Civsuccess2 16 років тому +2

    Also, Triangle offense is designed to maximize spacing against a man-to-man defensive team. Spacing increases help defense difficulty by making the reaction time longer for the help defender. Jordan was able to penetrate easier if a fraction of a second when he has the lane. With zone defense, triangle spacing is not effective anymore. Therefore, the like of Kobe has less space to penetrate into the paint.

    blackadam06, with the 80s Celtics I agreed. They got away with playing zone defense a lot and they still were not a very good defensive team. But in the 90s it was straight up otherwise they got called for it.
    By the way dude you and I better hide our faces since everyone is bias and in love with the 80s Celtics. Gee, I guess I just committed a sin by badmouthing the great Larry Bird and CO.

    i think watever problems u say kobe had on offense was due to playing full court defense on smaller guards, and the other teams best player from the outset of the games. his three point shot wasnt exactly on point.and wade and lebron looked spectacular, but lebron's size and physique is perfect for international play. and with dwyane not starting, he had something to prove, and he was a burst of energy coming off the usa bench. lebron and dwyane just had to catch, dribble,and make a play

    The Celtics were veterans with an all-star lineup, and the Bulls were young and inexperienced. That's why they lost to the Celts.

    and...?

  • @JZ2001JC
    @JZ2001JC 15 років тому

    You couldn't play zone back then so there was no zone. However, at 0:05 the guy guarding the Bulls player without the ball on the opposite wing may have been close to an illegal defense because his man was beyound the 3-pt line and he sunk into the paint, which you are not allowed to do (go in the paint off the ball if your man does not have ball beyond top 3-pt line). However, if he was near another ofensive player which he may have been in the post then it was okay but it was close.

  • @VeraciousMind
    @VeraciousMind 15 років тому

    exactly. and youll probably get thumbs down for that comment but you are absoulutely right! i cant tell u how much bad defense gets played on michael jordan when i watch these videos. guys are reaching and not sliding their feet, guys arent even trying to deny him the ball!! the defense then did allow handchecking, but again that means there not sliding their feet and thats bad defense

  • @uberathlete
    @uberathlete 16 років тому +1

    lol. MJ is better than Kobe for a LOT of reasons. He's better than Kobe in posting up. Has a better midrange game (1000x better). Better at using screens. Better at moving without the ball. Better at reading, anticipating, and breaking double teams. Better at fooling his defender off the dribble. Better defensively. Sheesh, can you say NO CONTEST? Kobe isn't even the best Laker of all time, and people are comparing him to the greatest of all time? Puhleeease.
