And those follow certain design rules and trends as well, like the floating roof design trend. So yeah all cars follow similar trends, but they make the difference in the details, not just the concept or the shape. Basically like it has always been throughout history. For example how something like light systems are designed and used nowadays in a fun and interesting way to give a brand a signature in some way. You know something is a Peugeot, Renault or BMW because of the rear light design or the front end DRL shape. Sorry, but a Mercedes looks so different from a BMW or Audi, that is is almost laughable that you tell me that you can barely tell them apart (not quoting you). That key items like the "Hofmeister kink" change over time is only logical. Even the c-pillar of a Golf has slightly changed shape over the years. Even the German cars need change here and there, but they do, on purpose, change very little each iteration. It is rarely a revolution and usually an evolution in design. And if you don't like that approach, German cars are likely not for you. And the fact that you like the new BMW M3/M4 grille shows that you like revolutions. I don't mind the grille of the M3/M4 that much, but I easily prefer the front end of the M340i (normal 3-series). Because it looks more "BMW" to me, effortless, elegant, not try hard, but strong. Meanwhile the M3/M4 front ends are a bit boy-racer, try hard, angry fish. Kind of what you expect from a Japanese brand. As for me I just like cars that I think look good. I could care less about the brand. I think Mercedes, BMW and Audi all make very good looking cars, but also boring/ugly cars at the same time. But do I see that they are all completely different in terms of styling and identity? Definitely. I could distinguish a Mercedes from an Audi from a mile away. Also about the influence. That is true. People follow hype trains and the opposite. That is how everything works these days. But in reality there are more people that think differently from the internet crowds than you think.

This car looks so good and seems so well thought out it should be a hit. Very well done Hyundai. It really has an "instant classic" look so far ahead of any other EV.
@@KrisDouglas I think they’d primarily win the market with this car because there are not too many hatchbacks in electric segment. And from existing selection they have the best design language. Tho the price would be one of the key factors. Fingers crossed it’ll come to North America soon.
I love it, I don't think I have ever seen such a striking car. Big thumbs up to Hyundai for not making it look like every other suv/crossover. I really hope to see a lot of these on our roads in the coming years, a design that good deserves to be a success.
November 2023 and I have had the latest Ioniq 5 now for a month. Its a fantastic car, all round. About 280 to 305 miles of range, comfortable, slick and everything I hoped it would be.
Compared to your iD4 review, your body language and vocal enthusiasm are on a much higher scale here. Definitely looks the best of the bunch by a long way.
Overall I'm glad EV cars are becoming more practical, The Mazda MX30 is the best looking by far but thi Ionic5 is a close second imo. Even Toyotas Mirai (although not ev) looks much better. Good to be past the Tesla's and nissan Leaf era.
One of my work mates gave me a lift the other day in his hybrid Kona. Gotta say, it was nice. I've nevery really put much thought into Hyundai but I'd say it's easily as nice as my boss' Jag XF, which cost about the same 2nd hand and is obviously powered by dinosaurs.
Just like Samsung embrace android and now Hyundai on EV, Korean know if something worth investing and I'm not surprise if Hyundai take the lead surpassed Tesla like Samsung surpassed HTC on Android phones. 😁
Agreed! I think it would be neat if some car manufacturers made electrified versions of their classic cars to really get people on board. Imagine a NEW Mustang that looks exactly like the debut 1964 version but built from the ground up as an EV? Or any other classic car from the past. 1955 Thunderbird? 1967 Chevy Camaro? And so on.
@@sleepyjoescumbag1663 The Etron was the top selling car here in Norway 2020 (or at least top 3), they are everywhere. Quite generic in design, albeit with some fine detailing, it does not push automotive design on however. @@wilburdilburtsonesquire4919 It's not appealing for our climate here in Canada, since Teslas don't resist winter. The car is so cheaply made that several parts start rusting after a single winter, and the paint quality is extremely bad. Even cars made in the 1980s survived winter better than that... The idea when purchasing an EV is to have a smaller impact on the environment. Thus, having a Tesla which will need to be sent to scrap after 5 years is definitively not a good choice.
Really enjoyed that review Jonny, you have a great knack of reaching the perfect balance of conversation and stats which results in a effortless watch... 👌🏻
I absolutely love that you put the car specs in the description. Your review format is also one of my favorites, really good balance between laid back commentary and really relevant info.
Absolutely spot on with the Lancia Delta Integrale, that's the first car I remember loving as a kid. Now I know why I thought the Ioniq 5 looked so good!👍
The reason you see the resemblance to Lancia delta is that both that and Hyundai Pony, from which Ioniq 5 inherits its design, are designed by the same person, Giorgetto Giugiaro.
"We only have two hours with this vehicle. Quick! Get me an electric bike, a bouncy castle and one of those wacky wavy inflatable tube guys.. NOW!!! Also... go round up some kids, ok?"
THIS is the EV i was waiting for, concept car looks! At first i thought “decent size”.....then i saw Jonny sitting in it and suddenly it looks rather large!
Hi all, quick message from 'the boss'; he's not being rude, he's on another 'Launch' shoot today, but he'll trawl through these comments tonight, so please bear with...
Having watched both reviews back-to-back --- Fully Charged and Late Break Show ----- take a bow, Johnny! (Time for another episode with your wife & Charger!). Kick ass! Thanks!
Johnny, you are excellent as always, but it's really your cam op bringing you up a level these days. Great tripod shots, wide aerials from the drone, he's good for a bit of back-and-forth, lots of tight macros so we can see detail, damn. Newcastle, your eyes are keen, keep it up!
I’ve worked in the motor trade all my life, I always recommend Hyundai’s to my friends and family I honestly think they are the best cars on the road the engineering is really well thought out and nice to work on they don’t over compliance every thing like the Germans. They are good value for money and ultra reliable. That thing looks cool as 👍👍👍
Korean motor industry have hold a high regard and debt to George Turnbull, former BL engineer: how he remodelled the Marina to produce the Pony, and established a new manufacturing facility. Think the retro Pony EV is amazing. I’d have one.
Weirdly I've only just watched this. The kids running on the the bouncy castle at the end was brilliant. Great review as usual. Such an excellent looking car.
The lounge concept is brilliant, very clever! Take the pain out of having to wait for your charge. Hyundai is really developing some nice cars in the last five years or so.
Forget range anxiety. I was counting the timer down with my AD anxiety. I thought you'd forgotten to include it. Because, after all, no self-respecting EV review is complete without a cameo from an air dancer. Good work, sir. Car's nice.
This actually makes all other cars look out of date instantly. Well done Hyundai - this is interesting and fresh in a sea of tedious, hateful modern car design. The VW in particular looks so dull. Definitely has a William Townsend feel to it’s styling. I’m a huge fan of the 80s so definitely a hit for me. Great video indeed Jonny!
So 40 year old styling is "fresh"??? Style is subjective and apparently many like this style which is fine. Personally, I'm turned off by angular boxy looking cars. I much prefer smoother, curvy aerodynamic styling. I think the EV6 is more attractive but the Ioniq 5 interior is more open and roomy.
Wow! The style/lines of a VW GTI, the size and capacity of a Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, the quickness of a real sports car and a fully designed car from the ground up. I have to get one!
Your production has improved so much with every video. Love the snarky comments and silliness at the end of the children and bouncy castle. This looks like a brilliant car!
I love the way Jonny presents, informative and easy to understand even if you're not a car person. The humour is spot on, has the perfect balance! Always keeps me glued to it end and thats not a easy feat considering the new trend of quick media consumption.
Looks like a VW Golf and what VW should have made. Like a proper cool hot hatch. Actually in the side profile it could be the big brother to the Honda-E. Which is great for Hyundai if those are the connections and associations my brain is making.
Great review as always. You mentioned the Lancia, but from the moment I saw this car, I saw Alfa Romeo SZ design cues, particularly with the headlight design 🙂
I can definitely vouch for Hyundai/Kia's quality workmanship, at least of late. They have improved immensely since the Pony debuted in the Canadian market in the mid eighties. I have a 2016 Kia Soul EV+ - my first Kia or Hyundai and also my first EV ever - and every switch, dial, lever, hinge, knob and button has a solid no-wiggle feel to it. It is smooth, quiet and as powerful as it needs to be (it feels WAY faster than its specs, especially from zero to about 45 mph) and is a pleasure to drive. And this is true: Every single person who has ridden in it has stated that their next car will be an EV. Maybe they would say that with any EV they ride in, but in any case I'm happy to spread the word! By the way, I bought it used last year with less than 18000 miles on it for under $13000US, with one owner and in basically new condition. There are LOTS of great deals to be found in used EVs, starting at well under $10,000. You won't regret it!
As informative and enjoyable as always!!! I am most definitely going with either the ioniq 5 or EV6 for my next car. I have fallen in love with the electric mode on my plug-in hybrid Mercedes and loathe when the dinosaur juice motor kicks in on it… If only the government would pull its finger out and invest more in EV charging infrastructure!!! All new build housing estates should have streetlights with in-built chargers!
I can't be alone in thinking they complement each other..? Johnny is good at the detailed spec based review, but Bobby Llewellyn does the more human and humorous review. Personally I'd watch them both.
@@evilmario6061 I also appreciate the bigger lean towards sustainability etc that FC has. The look, drive and space is all useful information, but it's kinda dull. What I'd love to see more of is the overall sustainability of the car. Is it made from recycled materials - can it be recycled at the end of its life. Is it too big? Etc
I’ve never been a huge fan of 80’s esthetic but I love the looks of the Ioniq 5. It’s a vehicle I would get out of and look back at as I walk away. It’s probably also the closest thing to a hatchback we will get in North America so it’s definitely on the short list. Great content as usual Jonny. 👍
Same here. I loved my Delta (back in the nineties) and seeing the pictures of the Ionic 5 brought back happy memories (apart from the rust issues of course). I do hope that they'll make a smaller two-door version of it in the future like a proper hatchback, which will also be more affordable I reckon.
@@-First-Last Probably much more, depending on the quality of the solar cells. You also have to make sure that these would survive the stress on the road with all the bumps. You need to have nice cable management, and a lot more quality control. Adds up to the weight, too. While people in the "sunshine"-states may profit from this, I dont see them work for everyone. Its just not worth the hazzle.
Loadsa likes and it got me thinking.... they need a foldout tent option in that boot and a 2 person one for the front boot (or whatever that space should be called). Instant electric lighting integrated. Maybe even a microwave. Brilliant!

Just Amazing. Hyundai are really hitting the sweet spot. I have been a big fan of Hyundai for 20 years. Had a Santa Fe for 8 years. The Ioniq 5 is what a 2021 car should be. If they get the price point right it will fly out the door. Great programme Jonny!!
This is what modern cars should look like. I hate all the cars on the market right now they look so outdated. Thank you for this Hyundai and Tesla design.
I wouldn't include Tesla's design. Their cars remind me of those anonymous blobs used in car ads in the 1990s. The Ioniq 5 and the Taycan are examples of good design in my opinion.

Cool! Cool! (2:43) For me, I always want to say "ironic".
Very nicely designed EV, the integrale also had a wheel in each corner. Luc Donckerwolke was also responsible for the design of the first Octavia which was a little bit Lancia Prisma/Dedra looking. The Murcielago was the best design from Lamborghini after Audi took over and the A2 still looks good today after all this time. He's had some great achievements and it's obvious he takes reference from the greatest designer of all time Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Exactly, that's why it reassembles integrale. Giugiaro's period designs were very similar though
And the fiat panda, DeLorean , vw golf and polo... best car designer ever

This car looks so good and seems so well thought out it should be a hit. Very well done Hyundai. It really has an "instant classic" look so far ahead of any other EV.
I'd like this in the garage so I can say, "bring out the gimp", when I go for a drive.

Never thought that I’d say that, but this Hyundai gets me excited
They've come a long way from the Pony!
It's a game changer for the price.
@@KrisDouglas I think they’d primarily win the market with this car because there are not too many hatchbacks in electric segment. And from existing selection they have the best design language. Tho the price would be one of the key factors. Fingers crossed it’ll come to North America soon.
Side profile screamed Delta Integrale as soon as I saw it. Glad I'm not mad (not on my own, anyway)
I was having a better day with this. And, being totally honest, I'd buy this car with my own money. The ID.4 isn't really my bag.
Retro and futuristic at the same time. Amazing job.
Would never have considered a Hyundai, but this is a cool car and I’d have one over a Tesla 3 or I-Pace.
Exactly the same. Was about to close a deal on a BMW I3s but I’m now going to wait for this.
Agreed. Ioniq 5 is coolest. Wonder what else Hyundai has up its sleeve.
Ioniq 5 competes Tesla model Y btw. Can't beat the price tag what Hyundai is giving.
9 years ago I said the same I tried, but after lease matured I ran and never looked back
Overall I'm glad EV cars are becoming more practical, The Mazda MX30 is the best looking by far but thi Ionic5 is a close second imo. Even Toyotas Mirai (although not ev) looks much better. Good to be past the Tesla's and nissan Leaf era.
Man Hyundai really is becoming THE car brand these days
One of my work mates gave me a lift the other day in his hybrid Kona. Gotta say, it was nice. I've nevery really put much thought into Hyundai but I'd say it's easily as nice as my boss' Jag XF, which cost about the same 2nd hand and is obviously powered by dinosaurs.
I love my Hyundai, I bought A 2022 Tucson with tons of safety features and just cool technology
Just like Samsung embrace android and now Hyundai on EV, Korean know if something worth investing and I'm not surprise if Hyundai take the lead surpassed Tesla like Samsung surpassed HTC on Android phones. 😁
Koreans design stylish cars but the reliability is crappy
Don't they use the same battery pack that GM is using? The Bolts are having battery fires.

@@RealmDesigner sadly it is impossible because of the norms. Though there are more and more cars inspired by vintage cars
And so on.
I simply love it, and that colour is stunning.

@@sleepyjoescumbag1663 The Etron was the top selling car here in Norway 2020 (or at least top 3), they are everywhere. Quite generic in design, albeit with some fine detailing, it does not push automotive design on however. Hyundai don't seem to be restrained with the same conservative brand identity rules and have created something far more appealing
This is so beautiful, and the first EV that actually looks appealing
My neighbour just got a Ford Mach E and it looks amazing
Tesla’s been looking hella appealing since day one
@@wilburdilburtsonesquire4919 It's not appealing for our climate here in Canada, since Teslas don't resist winter. The car is so cheaply made that several parts start rusting after a single winter, and the paint quality is extremely bad. Even cars made in the 1980s survived winter better than that... The idea when purchasing an EV is to have a smaller impact on the environment. Thus, having a Tesla which will need to be sent to scrap after 5 years is definitively not a good choice.

Absolutely spot on with the Lancia Delta Integrale, that's the first car I remember loving as a kid. Now I know why I thought the Ioniq 5 looked so good!👍
Head of Design is in for a few awards with this one
The reason you see the resemblance to Lancia delta is that both that and Hyundai Pony, from which Ioniq 5 inherits its design, are designed by the same person, Giorgetto Giugiaro.
"We only have two hours with this vehicle. Quick! Get me an electric bike, a bouncy castle and one of those wacky wavy inflatable tube guys.. NOW!!! Also... go round up some kids, ok?"

Hyundai Pony Runner from 1982 was my first car. Loving this new car immensely.
Weirdly I've only just watched this. The kids running on the the bouncy castle at the end was brilliant. Great review as usual. Such an excellent looking car.
The Lancia Delta for me is my dream car, the fact that the ioniq 5 looks like it, it's major selling point. I love the look of it.
Yeah like Honda E. Astonishing designs. But Japanes really drops ball in specs.
Theres a whole lot of Alfa Romeo SZ going on at the front too, it looks fab!
This guy is the best reviewer out there.
That looks great, I love the diagonal slash across the doors and the “8 bit” lights.
With Jonny being so tall, I can never quite place how big a car really is
Audi has that chief designer who is by his own word a little below 2 meters. He makes all the ev he has presented look like a compact car.
How tall is he? I'm 6 ft 4 and head room is a concern with any car purchase but it looked like he had plenty of room with this car.

Rear quarter angle looks familiar with Austin Princess. Also the roominess.
It looks like a AUSTIN MAESTRO i think

Same here. I loved my Delta (back in the nineties) and seeing the pictures of the Ionic 5 brought back happy memories (apart from the rust issues of course). I do hope that they'll make a smaller two-door version of it in the future like a proper hatchback, which will also be more affordable I reckon.
solar roof? Amazing. Hoping this becomes standard for ALL ev s

@@-First-Last Probably much more, depending on the quality of the solar cells. You also have to make sure that these would survive the stress on the road with all the bumps.
