That's the hard way...cut out a template from a piece of cardboard....save lots..lots.of time and work.

You spray the whole thing so the whole rotor is protected. The pad will scrub off the paint off ONLY the braking surface.
I understand this concept, my only concern with this method is that the brake pads could potentially get gummed up with paint causing the pads to not be very effective.
