this was Emerson's band The Best, formed in London in 1990, featuring John Entwistle (bass), Joe Walsh and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on guitars and Simon Phillips (drums). this was some of the last footage prior to Emerson's health problems that hampered his technical skills
So many who listened to him didn't even appreciate the full range of what they were hearing. The man was a walking musical encyclopedia. Chopin, Richard Rodgers, Bernstein, Brubeck, ancient Japanese folk music, Prokofiev, Britten, Bach (played from the backside of the keyboard!), tied together with Emerson's original stuff -- and all that in one 13 minute concert segment.
I'm a young pianist/keyboardist and just recently discovered prog rock through Yes. Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson are an enormous new inspiration for me. When I discovered these two guys, I heard things I'd never thought possible on a keyboard, I am so happy these two have broadened my musical understanding and creativity, and heartbroken to find out of Emerson's passing. His playing is absolutely timeless and will inspire, awe, and amaze people for ever.
I second ashley tart's comment...welcome and good luck. Play like it's your last day and you want to blow everyone away and remember you forever!!! Learn as much as you can from as many people as you can!!! There is so much great prog music out there. Emerson and Wakeman are a good start and they epitomized the prog keyboard player at the time. But there are many who came after as well.
Check out Lyle Mays of Pat Metheny Group - one of my favs next to Keith, also Chick Corea/ Return to Forever. Rod Argent does a smoking' solo in "Hold your Head Up" (as does Tom Scholtz in Boston's "Smokin'"). Eddie Jobson of UK is unbelievable as well, and of course Kerry Livgren & Steve Walsh from Kansas are no slouches, either.
The two of them Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman probably won't ever be equaled. Emerson has to be from another planet. Close your eyes and you'd swear that he must have 6 arms. I've been to two of their concerts back in the middle 1970s.
He does things with his left hand I can’t even do with my right hand ! Have loved his playing ever since I first heard the Nice back in the 60’s. R.I.P Keith
Older people used to think Liberace was a great piano player, on TV in the 50s and 60s with his fancy clothing but they need to take a look at rock and roll music where they will find some of the finest musicians in history. One such example of three excellent rock musicians together is ELP, blowing away everyone else for years. Keith was just amazing and this video is great proof of his endless talents. There are many other fine keyboard players in rock such as Steve Winwood and Elton John and Rick Wakeman but Keith was superb. So sad that he left us too soon.
I can't find enough words to describe this man. I like and admire many musicians, but no one as much as I admire and worship Keith Emerson. He is the greatest, the best, a God, not only in keys, but as a musician as a whole. An incomparable talent. I listen to his music on a daily basis. He always makes me happy. I only wish he were still here with us...
Emerson was a true master of his craft and, I reckon, a typical Yorkshireman - modest, thoughtful, and with a great sense of humour. We'll never see his like again.
I would love to thank Keith Emerson for everything he's done in his whole life. I am a keyboard player and I can tell you Keith is from another planet because no one and I mean no one can play like Keith Emerson. May have heard this a million billion times but I think I'm his number one fan. I would not be playing the piano or synthesizers today if it were not for Keith. Pure musical genius.
I actually had the pleasure to meet him. Keith was my idol and I have to thank him and Greg and Carl for giving me a lifetime of great music. I've been playing the piano for 20 years and need about another 120 to be as good as Mr Keith Emerson. Like I said without a doubt the greatest keyboard player of all time
One of the saddest days of my life was when my brother called me and gave me the news because he knew how much of a fan I was. I have started Keith's fingering movements on the keys and like I said he's from another planet. I seen him play two songs at the same time. Two Christmas songs. Try that my ELP friends. If you are a keyboard player, you would know it's just about impossible and the way he did it was totally impossible but he pulled it off with no problem , a pure genius musical genius
You're wrong you're his number two fan. I've cried twice in my life over a celebrity death. First was Emerson and my eyes remain dry for 6 years until the next one which was Jeff Beck.
Holy Cow Bat Man, knew this was special when first seeing "Skunk" but then "The Ox" even then Joe Walsh...you gotta be kidding. This may be one of the greatest lineups of all time.
America..first Emo song I ever heard...and with Entwhistle on bass....wow.. many many hours listening to Keith Emerson..genius, innovator, pioneer, showman, and above all a great keyboard player
Thank you Keith for all you have made possible, in music industry. Thank you for the good moments you have given everyone. No words can describe how empty I am for hearing about your passing. Thank you also to all music lovers , prog rockers, and so on, for not letting you die in our hearts. Music lives forever thanks to people like you, Keith. RIP
I was 13 when I heard Toccata. (A miracle behind the iron curtain.) I still remember the shivers down the spine sitting by the old tape recorder. That was a moment for a lifetime. Nowadays, well over 50, I can hear all kind of fantastic music being made, but there hasn't been a year without those weeks of ELP mood on me since that Toccata. Bless you.
HOLEE CRAP WHAT A BAND!!! Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer) on keyboards John Entwistle (of The Who) on bass and vocals Joe Walsh (Eagles, James Gang, and solo fame) on guitar and vocals Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers) on guitar Simon Phillips (the Jack Bruce Band, 801, the Jeff Beck Group on drums.
This music is so demanding to play! But clearly, no compromise is allowed. Keith Emerson was never about holding anything back---For Keith, it was "balls to the wall", almost nonstop. Incredible energy and explosiveness, permeated with personality and flavor -- A timeless combination. Immortal.
Watching a true genius. I know this seems like a comment from an "old man" but there aren't bands creating music like this from gen x or the millennials.
Saw him live in 74 in Memphis TN. On my way to the Mid-South coliseum to watch him play, I saw him outside the arena shooting the breeze with the help drinking a Bud. RIP Keith. You're an idol to me and I'm not even a musician.
Keith was King. He was thee greatest player, pioneer, composer and showman. As great as Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz and many outstanding contemporaries of Keith were, Keith was on a much higher level. Keith was too much of a gentle men to ever accept this, but this the truth. I'm so upset he is gone. He did not realize how important he was to all of us. Schumann ruined his hand from his passion to be a great pianist so he concentrated on composition. Keith will be missed for a long time to come. What a horrific loss.
Saw Keith twice one of the greatest keyboard players that ever lived I'm very blessed and honered I saw him with ELP also Jon lord of deep purple and Rick wakeman of yes
Saw ELP in 1973 or 74 in Birmingham. Soundtrack to my youth and have never stopped listening to them and in particular Keith's playing. Requiescant in pace.
I think I saw a video where Keith did this one on Letterman's show with PS and the WMDB. I hear "America", "Blue Rondo a la Turk", Dvorak's New World Symphonie, and probably a few other familiar tunes that I missed. Great music and great band.
You could just see the happiness ooze out of every pore in Keith's body. Playing his music is what he was meant to do, what he needed to do and what he loved to do! RIP!
So grateful to the uploader for this. Anyone know the history of how this group of musicians came together?? Pretty crazy . . . crazy awesome that is !!
Yes. Here is a brief synopsis. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake got together when their respective groups the nice and King Crimson we're performing on the same bill. Both musicians felt that their groups had pretty much come to a dead end as far as they were concerned and decided to hook up. After auditioning several drummers including Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix experience they decided on Carl Palmer who along with Vincent crane. Just started Atomic rooster. They came together to form the first supergroup ELP in 1970. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. What's weird is that Vincent crane with atomic rooster committed suicide just like Emerson did in later years. I hope that helps
Now if you're talkin about this particular group I believe Simon Phillips is the drummer and he was pretty much a session player who played with Jeff Beck amongst others. Of course the bass player is John Entwistle who played with the who. You probably know this so to answer your question I'm not exactly sure how they hooked up for this particular project.
Like Hendrix, nothing before, nothing after.. Wow! Great show here! Simon Phillips on Drums, Skunk Baxter on Axe & John Entwhistle from the Who on Bass
Mad respect for Emerson's musical ability, and the form of his passing was a tragedy of the highest order. If anything, this world needs TALENT and Keith had it in spades! It's too bad that the strength of his mental/physical illnesses exceeded his willingness to live (and seek professional help) in the end. Even if he was diminishing physically by his sixties/seventies, to the point where he could no longer play according to own professional expectations, he still had SO MUCH to give to the arts/the musical community! Had he the capacity to live and learn to ADAPT according to his newfound limits (and let go of the insignificant online naysayers and trolls), he easily, in my opinion, could have continued to have a significant impact on music (and carved out a decent living) through musical composition, record production, teaching, writing, speaking, counseling, mentoring - whatever! That said, to have that all potential lost suddenly (and forever) through a self-inflicted gunshot wound, not to mention the resulting, long-term impact on his loved ones, was a big loss for the musical world AND HUMANITY IN GENERAL. Hopefully, there are (or will be) others talented enough to step up and fill in this man's mighty shoes and legacy! Long live ELP and Keith Emerson!!! LL
Keith and Hendrix are currently jamming with Zappa and Jeff Porcaro and Jaco Pastorius while George Martin sits in the control room with John Lennon and David Bowie.
+Jim Gardner :when my husband passed at age of 53 we all knew he would be there jamming with Jimmy Hendrix. Thanks for your wonderful post! We'll all meet there.
+Jim Gardner I'm sure Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Alvin Lee, and Keith Moon have their instruments ready to go for the next set...with John Entwistle on bass.
Keith Emerson was one of a kind. There will never be another like him.

Only one word describes Keith...
GENIUS.
Wrong. Rick Wakeman is a genius. Keith Emerson is GOD
The greatest rock bass player of all time, John Entwistle, puts this over the top!
,
So many who listened to him didn't even appreciate the full range of what they were hearing. The man was a walking musical encyclopedia. This breaks my heart. RIP
THE Best Keyboard Player Ever
NO, IS THE BEST IS GOD
the best
None better than Keith. Oscar Peterson was an animal, too....but not like Keith.
We have been very lucky to live in the time when a master of music like Emerson was there, so sad he left Earth so violently. Thank you Keith.
he wanted to leave. he could no longer perform. that is what was so sad. but it was his choice.. i'll never forget him.
An extraordinary virtuoso who had superior piano style, the best I have ever come across on YT!
Absolutely the best 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Unique keyboard player
Keith dropped the mic on future keyboardists when he left us.

Same for me. I was introduced to the Prog Rock greats very young by my father. I would add Tony Banks to my influences in addition to Keith and Rick.
The two of them Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman probably won't ever be equaled. Emerson has to be from another planet. Close your eyes and you'd swear that he must have 6 arms. I've been to two of their concerts back in the middle 1970s.
Simon Philips and Entwistle rhythm section? WTF!!!?
Incredible!
Simon is a beast!
He does things with his left hand I can’t even do with my right hand ! Have loved his playing ever since I first heard the Nice back in the 60’s. R.I.P Keith
Me too brother
Aunque no somos de esa época somos afortunados, gracias a you tube de poder admirar y escuchar a uno de los mejores tecladistas ,el sr Keith Emerson

Hey! Liberace was an incredible pianist and a really nice person. I enjoyed listening to and watching them both perform. Master showmen and players.
I experienced the joy of seeing Keith perform 4 times. Genius.
+HVYMETL ... you are a Lucky man ...
My first concert...1974...I was 13.
Made me a lifelong fan...yeah, even Love Beach.

The sound of Mr. Keith sounds life in my mind. Thank you. Mr. Keith.
Musical genius one of the greatest composers ever.
There are many great prog keyboard wizards out there, and this man is their king 👑
No one like Keith Emerson! Thanks, Bro, for the magic you brougth to our lives! RIP!
Simply the best ! RIP dear Keith ! 16 year today anniversary :o/
1:05 playing crazy complicated basslines and looking bored while doing it 😂 Emerson was a BEAST
Amazing. In those days, he was the best keyboard artist in rock - in a league by himself.
America..first Emo song I ever heard...and with Entwhistle on bass....wow.. many many hours listening to Keith Emerson..genius, innovator, pioneer, showman, and above all a great keyboard player
The God of Keyboard...Rest in Peace....you were the best

What a fantastic performance..!! RIP Keith
HOLEE CRAP WHAT A BAND!!!
Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer) on keyboards

Joe Walsh (Eagles, James Gang, and solo fame) on guitar and vocals
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers) on guitar
Simon Phillips (the Jack Bruce Band, 801, the Jeff Beck Group on drums.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you - I was wondering who was on drums
gracias!!!!
Simon Phillips may be best known for his work with Toto.
Yes, good players all, but consider, it took 4 other top players to fill in for just Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. That speaks volumes right there.
This music is so demanding to play!
But clearly, no compromise is allowed.
Keith Emerson was never about holding anything back---For Keith, it was "balls to the wall", almost nonstop.
Incredible energy and explosiveness, permeated with personality and flavor --

Immortal.
Holy smokes. Keith Emerson was a master's master.
Watching a true genius. I know this seems like a comment from an "old man" but there aren't bands creating music like this from gen x or the millennials.
Emerson has been the hightest brightest most creative mind ever when it comes to the keyboards.
Saw him twice with ELP in the ninety's. He was great! Such a talented person.
I also saw him with NICE. I think they were even better
Saw him live in 74 in Memphis TN. On my way to the Mid-South coliseum to watch him play, I saw him outside the arena shooting the breeze with the help drinking a Bud. RIP Keith. You're an idol to me and I'm not even a musician.

Gotta love that Emerson.
Amused, not surprised. Few dare to play so gifted and realised.
Koun peurbadel Keith muiañ karet ...🕊️🌹🦋
Grandioso.
Wow. What a musician.
Mad respect for Emerson's musical ability, and the form of his passing was a tragedy of the highest order. If anything, this world needs TALENT and Keith had it in spades!

Don't forget the bass player who was at that particular concert, The Who's Entwistle !
+Jim Gardner I'm sure Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Alvin Lee, and Keith Moon have their instruments ready to go for the next set...with John Entwistle on bass.
+sunking2001 Bonzo too!
Don't forget Keith Moon and Duane Allman...then for vocals we can have Elvis grab a mike!
