Jonny, I have to apologize because I said to myself, when I began watching your videos, that there is no way this young guy knows squat about pro tips. Saying I was wrong would be an understatement. I love how you explain things, and I love how enthusiastic you are about fishing and teaching. Thanks for making me humble, and thanks for what you do. Keep it up brother.
So, been pretty much power fishing all of my life...cranks, spinners, jerkbait, chatter..etc. Also used a stick worm, but never used a jig. Just started to slow down and use them and love it. Just recently, started to learn how to skip. Could not get it consistent and knew there was something I was missing. Tucking the arm up against the armpit was the issue! I just got back in from practicing on our pond. It made all the difference in the world. Funny thing is, watched so many videos and not one person ever mentioned this. Just wanted to say thank you!
Hi Jonny. Just want to say that your tip about keeping your arm tucked is just amazing. It has honestly revolutionized my skipping efforts! Thank you very much indeed.
Been waiting for this tutorial - Thanks! I subscribe to like 10 fishing channels and I don't watch nearly everything most of them post, but when I see that icon on your channel, I'm always excited!
You are the first person I've seen on UA-cam talk about tucking in your arm when skipping I was terrible at skipping before I started tucking in my arm when I skipped but no it's like second nature I learned it by trial and error now if someone asks me about skipping I tell them to tuck there arm in when they cast and I'm glad someone on UA-cam explained that for new anglers trying to get better
I watch a lot of UA-cam fishing videos and yours are some of the best out there. I learn a lot from these! Keep it up! If you're ever up in Wisconsin give me a shout!
+Fish the Moment Yeah actually I think your dad sent me a message last year when he found one of my videos. That's how I started watching your videos. I live in Madison and fish the Madison chain quite a bit, my favorites are the Wisconsin river and Mississippi River. I also have a few smaller lakes that hold good fish. What time of year are you thinking?
while we're locked down and it's still cold here in western burbs of Chicagoland, the tip to keep your elbow tucked to your side has helped my accuracy for underhanded and side arm casting immensely!!! Can't wait to get to the lake and practice skipping w/ the things you shared here!!! keep up the good work, be safe! Thanks
Great, great complete visual & verbal demonstration. I'm a bank angler and just started skipping lures this Spring. 75% of the bass I've caught so far have come from skipping weightless Zoom super flukes under docks with a spinning reel using braid with a mono leader, including a 4 lb lmb. I'm getting better with the baitcaster too with more reps. This vid will help a lot. Thanks! As Roland Martin would say, "Son, this is the deal!"
Nice video! I've watched a lot of skipping videos prior to learning, you're the only one that mentioned the arm tuck. I never really noticed that I did that until I saw this video. For all of those learning, like he said just practice! It's quite frustrating at first but it will really come through with practice! Another good tip, keep your tension knob on the loser side, then turn your magnet to it's max setting while learning. You might not always get the distance you want, but it'll keep you from making a new home for the birds.
You are an impressive young man. Fishing knowledge way beyond your years and very strong presentation skills. Just curious, what are you studying in graduate school?
Great instructions. Other videos don't tell you when to release the lure you said release it as soon as you make the bottom Circle. Thanks for the info
Fantastic , Video , Very informative . I followed your instructions first I used a spin real , then a bait caster . 9 out of 10 casts skipping . Not as far as I would like but getting there . Thanks you very much .
I really enjoy your content, you break things down like no other! Today, I went out and practiced skipping, holding my arm down like you mentioned. Damn, if it didn’t do the trick! Thanks for that pro tip!
have now watched approx 30 vids on skipping a jib. This is the most informative by far. Keep teaching the technique and the sponsorship will follow, I promise. You do not want an infomercail like Roland Martin's old show or Shaw Grigsby. They sucked on technique. Brad Dunn
Great instructions again. I’ve been trying your techniques and they’ve definitely been helping. Your how to s are great the way you explain them! I’ve never thought of fishing as a sport of technique per say but this year I get it and I have much more respect for the sport it is! I realize I have a spending problem that comes with it though
One of the best videos that I have watch on skipping , I never thought about tucking my arm in make sense I will try that dollar trick . I don't know why I have a hard time with longer rods for me 6' 9" to 7 '2' is as long as i can go unless i am pitch skipping. Anyways great video .
Another GREAT video! Easiest lure to skip? An extra fat Bass Pro stick bait or Yum Dinger. The fatter worm skips 10 times easier than the standard stick bait or Senko.
Johnny, you are very good at slinging that jig under the dock and at explaining what you're doing but I've got to point out a couple things I don't believe you've taken into consideration. I'm 5'8" tall, for example, and I'm fishing from a bank far more often than I'm fishing from the bow of someone's boat. I really do love my 7' rods for a lot of things, but skipping baits isn't one of them- at least not in the early stages of learning. I've resorted to using a 5'8" pistol grip rod while practicing everything else your video illustrates. I'm getting more distance and accuracy as I work on the technique, and I have no doubt that it will carry over to using longer rods when the occasions arise. But if you care to do a reality check on it, beach your boat and try skipping a bait under that dock from the shore with a 7' rod. I frequently employ a roll cast in confined spaces, so launching a bait isn't a problem. Getting the rod angle and bait trajectory is, however.
Great videos as usual. Just wondering if you had any opinions or options on doing all these types of casting and skipping with a baitcaster being a co angler from the back of the boat. The co angler has a little harder of a time with all these techniques between power poles the engine, consoles and graphs and not a casting platform. This would pertain more for my 11 year old son who naturally like any other angler like to come up to the front of boat to fish because there’s less stuff in the way. Thanks for any info.
I have been wanting to learn how to do this but i am afraid of the backlashes i might endure. i can skip with a spinning rod pretty easy, but a little worried with a bait caster. I noticed you didn't say anything about setting the brakes. Is that because you just leave everything set the way you normally would? Do you thumb the spool instantly after your release? Any info would be helpful on this part, so that i know what to expect after the release. Thank you for the video. Your videos are very informative. I just subscribed.
woosa42 check out the segment at the 4:50 minute mark in this video again. I use the words “spool tension” and “drag” instead of breaks, so that’s probably why you missed it. You can still skip a fishing lure with you breaks tightened down a lot. In the video, I tighten the breaks about 90% of the way and can still skip the lure. You just need to cast hard/faster to get the bait to skip when your breaks are really tight
I can always count on Fish the Moment to explain things so methodical (did i just say that). I know that from this POI that I will be persistent to learn the art of skipping. I did try to find a beaver bait in my arsenal but they look a little slim line and probably won't work correctly.
The jig is not in the description. Is that a strike king skipping jig in Texas craw? Thanks in advance Jonny. I am really struggling learning this technique. Your tips have help me avoid catastrophic backlashes and I don’t plan to give up.
Im just learning, but it helps to start with a the spool extra loose and the drag as tight as it goes. Work your way down once you get comfortable. The zoom horny toad is another good starting lure.
Digging the vids Jonny! Different take on what most people are making vids on. I also received a message from your dad and have been following your vids since you had about 100 subs. Hope we can collab some day. Keep up the good work and hit me up if you ever want to chat about camera gear 😬.
Hey man! Very good video. I'm new to the channel so you may have already made this video seeing as its a pretty common topic, but do you think perhaps you could make a tutorial covering how to fish a thick grassy lake? There's one very close to my house and I haven't had any luck... I believe it's thick on the surface but thin down under and there are some lily pads... thanks.
Thank you! I haven't yet. There aren't many grassy lakes in my area. There's one lake about 2 hours from me that I plan to fish this fall that has really thick grass mats. Without knowing the lake, I'd suggest trying a punch rig with a 1 oz weight this time of year. I've also caught really good bass on the inside grass line near the bank what a senko this time of year in Wisconsin. Bass will move super shallow this time of year. Hope that helps!
That was great, the only problem is everytime i get a backlash while skipping it's always a bad one so it discourages me from keep on skipping for the rest of the day.
Go ahead and hit the pontoon boat with your first cast ;-). Really though, here's how I catch bass on docks. Skip my jig in, pick out the backlash, then discover there's a bass swimming all over the lake with my jig. It works!
Best skipping instructional on UA-cam!
Thanks!
Agree
Agreed - excellent.
Definitely gonna try my luck one more time this video got me motivated 😄
Jonny, I have to apologize because I said to myself, when I began watching your videos, that there is no way this young guy knows squat about pro tips. Saying I was wrong would be an understatement. I love how you explain things, and I love how enthusiastic you are about fishing and teaching. Thanks for making me humble, and thanks for what you do. Keep it up brother.
This is HANDS DOWN THE BEST skipping tutorial on UA-cam! You covered everything we need to know. Now it’s all about practice.
Awesome! Have never heard the "tucked arm" advice. Will give this a try. Thank you.
Hope it helps!
The best explanation on UA-cam, I think 4 people are mad that you shared the real technique with all of us.
So, been pretty much power fishing all of my life...cranks, spinners, jerkbait, chatter..etc. Also used a stick worm, but never used a jig. Just started to slow down and use them and love it. Three yrs later and this is probably still one of the best how to skip videos out there.
Hi Jonny. Just want to say that your tip about keeping your arm tucked is just amazing. It has honestly revolutionized my skipping efforts! Thank you very much indeed.
Out of all the videos on Skipping a Jig, Yours is the BEST!
Been waiting for this tutorial - Thanks! I subscribe to like 10 fishing channels and I don't watch nearly everything most of them post, but when I see that icon on your channel, I'm always excited!
Thanks for the support! It means a lot
My two go to channels to watch for education is you and tactical bassin! Keep grinding man I'm sharing your channel with all my friends!
Thank you and thanks for sharing! That's good company to be in!
I watch a lot of UA-cam fishing videos and yours are some of the best out there. I learn a lot from these! Keep it up! If you're ever up in Wisconsin give me a shout!
Thanks man! I actually grew up fishing in Wisconsin and I'm planning on taking a fishing trip up there next year. What lakes do you fish?
+Fish the Moment Yeah actually I think your dad sent me a message last year when he found one of my videos. That's how I started watching your videos. another great vid from one of the best fishing instructors on here!
Thanks for the advice on skipping a lure under docks, etc. That's the best information and presentation I've seen on UA-cam so far.
First fishing instructional video that was presented in a way that actually taught. Thanks
I've actually learned more in the past two weeks of watching you than I have in the past year Watching anyone else keep it up you're going places
Great, great complete visual & verbal demonstration. Awesome. I enjoy coming back to older stuff. New stuff is good but older stuff was great
Killer tutorials on this channel... fundamental skills being taught here
Finally!!! ... a best detailed and clear explanation skipping on UA-cam. Thanks so much!...and I'm going to train :-)
Nice video! I've watched a lot of skipping videos prior to learning, you're the only one that mentioned the arm tuck. I never really noticed that I did that until I saw this video. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the tips! It's always helpful to get a second opinion on stuff like this!
Make a cast, put some electrical tape on the reel. This way you won't backlash as bad.
Good stuff, great content and to the point. No BS, not marketing nor advertising, just tips on how to get it done!!
This rivals any of the Bassmaster, FLW, or MLF pro videos on skip casting. You got a future brother.
this is the literally the best explanation of skipping ever!!! thank you so much
So far the most helpful skipping video. Thank you.
You are an impressive young man. Fishing knowledge way beyond your years and very strong presentation skills. Just curious, what are you studying in graduate school?
Great instructions. Other videos don't tell you when to release the lure you said release it as soon as you make the bottom Circle. Thanks for the info
That war eagle Ozark craw color is MONEY. I love that color for pretty much and color of water clarity and time of year.
I agree!
Best fishing channel on youtube period! keep up the good work !
Thank you for the support!
I’d have to agree, skipping/learning electronics..etc he doesn’t rush threw and assume you just know things.
More help from this video than from my club members. Thanks and keep up with these great videos!
Excellent instruction! Most thorough explanation I have seen yet!
Great video! This is exactly what I was looking for. I love all your videos. Keep them coming!
Fantastic , Video , Very informative . I followed your instructions first I used a spin real , then a bait caster . 9 out of 10 casts skipping . Not as far as I would like but getting there .
Thanks you very much .

Best detailed how to for skipping and by such a young person.
Best advice I've seen on skipping

Definitely the best skipping video I’ve come across well done.

The tucked arm thing really works! I’ve still got a lot of practice, but I’m getting there.
Just what I needed to know, using this technique more this year.. good info, well done
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tips ! Have a blessed day!
Thanks buddy! Been fishing my whole life & never figured out how to skip my bait until now!
Best skippin video I've watched
Johnny your the best coach out there, thanks for all you do.
Nice tips. Thank you
From indonesia
Awesome tutorial.
I’ll have to modify it for sitting on my kayak but it’s still enlightening 👊🤨
One of the best videos that I have watch on skipping , I never thought about tucking my arm in make sense I will try that dollar trick . I don't know why I have a hard time with longer rods for me 6' 9" to 7 '2' is as long as i can go unless i am pitch skipping. Anyways great video .
Thanks! Glad the video was helpful!
Jonny, excellent video on skipping a bait. The only suggestion I have is to change your cap from a pig to a beautiful Fighting Tiger!
Absolutely great video . Very detailed . Better than pro videos . Next time show so back hand skips. Thank you nice work
Best skipping video I've seen.
Super video bro 👍
You make it look easy my man, great info, great video.
You have a knack for instruction. Great video!
Another GREAT video! Easiest lure to skip? An extra fat Bass Pro stick bait or Yum Dinger. The fatter worm skips 10 times easier than the standard stick bait or Senko.
The armpit deal was smthn I haven't heard before regarding this topic, thanks I'm gonna have to work on that
Thanks for the tips, great video. Seems easy enough, can’t wait to try it.
Great video! Do u have a video to learn to pitch or flip. Sorry i dont know the difference of flip or pitch.
Very good video . Well explained .
Great video. Can’t wait to try it out.
Johnny, you are very good at slinging that jig under the dock and at explaining what you're doing but I've got to point out a couple things I don't believe you've taken into consideration.

That was a great video. Well done
Thanks Jonny. My roll cast are not always accurate I will have to try this technique.
Michael Howell no problem! Glad you enjoyed!
Excellent technique! Thank you

So, you don't have to adjust the centrifugal or magnetic brakes at all? Just adjust the spool tensioner?

hi brother, what you suggest to set the breaking gear at and the spool tension at for a learner?
Good informative, helpful video.
Great video I don't use baitcasters but still great information
Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks! Great content!
Looks good man, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed!
The jig is not in the description. Is that a strike king skipping jig in Texas craw? Thanks in advance Jonny. I am really struggling learning this technique. Your tips have help me avoid catastrophic backlashes and I don’t plan to give up.
Yes, sorry for leaving it out. I just updated the description with a link to the jig on Tackle Warehouse. I'm glad the video was helpful! Good luck!
Skills..took me a while to learn also... jigs is always best way to learn then comes spinners ..which i gotta learn next..
Great advice thanks a bunch!
Well said Johnny you da man!! 🎣🎣
What about brake settings ? So you are saying I can just pick up any bait caster and skip it ? I think it needs more for the settings part
Awesome tip.
Thanks!
Thanks for the amazing tips
Im just learning, but it helps to start with a the spool extra loose and the drag as tight as it goes. Work your way down once you get comfortable. The zoom horny toad is another good starting lure.

Thanks for sharing. Very informative. God bless you
Very informative
Thanks!

Fish the Moment thanks a ton. I'm hitting the water early tomorrow and will apply this advice for sure.
any tips for becoming more accurate besides hours of practice--how do you aim
This helped me a lot!!!
Good to hear, Anthony!! Thanks for the comment!
good information brother
hi ,can you recommend me wich lures are perfect for this technique ? thanks man !!!
How to setting tension and brake for skipping?
What about djusting the magnetic brake? And how do you avoid bird-nesting?
Great Vid!!!
I’m getting backlash when I’m trying to skip, am I doing something wrong?
I saw BigFoot running! About 3:39!! It was him.
That was great, the only problem is everytime i get a backlash while skipping it's always a bad one so it discourages me from keep on skipping for the rest of the day.
