@Fishing Preacher777 Never use a leader in skipping as it creates a weak point. Now when "finesse" fishing the technique is much different as I go to braid to fluero but again considering the "conditions" & I stay light line in finesse fishing. Remember your finessing to get more bites & thus means smaller fish & with a more realistic presence. Understand the conditions in dissecting out your arsenal in use. Take into account soft plastic Power fishing as well. As example if im looking for big bass an gonna throw a worm then I'm Not gonna be "finessing" , I'm going 7'6 - 7'9 medium heavy / heavy rod , heavy line fluero or braid (without leader) again considering the conditions & if I'm flipping/pitching in heavy cover or in open water (without) a leader as again this technique is the mindset of hooking up a big bass. Always be dissecting out the water clarity, conditions, & type of fishing unto the "reason" for ones selecting type also like 6am summer fishing going topwater, etc.etc. Take this info into account & I assure you that you will get more bites, more fish & your progress will only continue to gain in knowledge & confidence. ~Reign Creative~ EST. 2022. At 61 years old I practice this sport with the attitude that everyday I need to learn something new. I've been fishing bass for 40 years and I can't believe the amount of information I am still missing. Keep up teaching sir. We're listening.
My grandpa taught me that from a real young age, and I always do that, especially in this last year due to his passing, I’m trying to honour his name and pass on his teachings. He used to do a lot of fishing when he was my age and during his teen years back in the late 50’s early 60’s
Right you are..... I just turned 75 in November and I am still learning, not just fishing, either.... I have said for many years, when I stop learning, just slam the lid in my face.
I’m sure I haven’t seen them all, but I have seen a lot of skipping vids on UA-cam and this one is right there with the best if not The very best. Your teaching method, without making the viewer feel like he is being talked down to, is on point. Thank you!
You are one of the top instructors on UA-cam. Now I just need to get me a bait caster. I skip pretty well with a spinning rod and am looking forward to trying these techniques out. I assume the technique is similar minus feathering the spool
Anyone else have their mind blown for a second with the taping your spool to stop full reel backlash when learning to skip? I know what I am doing next time I am out. Hands down your material is so good for building foundations. So many other channels either preach fundamentals good googling should explain or assume you know a lot. As a tech savy eager new fisherman, I know way more techniques than I can physically do and finding ways to build up to that is a blessing.
Hands down, the best fishing youtuber. Definitely the best bait skipper!! The video we all commented on was only a week ago and now you’ve already got the video up for us. Thanks for the content and thanks for actually caring about the folks who watch your videos. You’re awesome dude.
Dude ur skip cast is a thing of beauty. I love doing this, especially in the spring with the bass in close. Snagging a hog on a skip cast makes the 30 times that you fail and snag a branch totally freaking worth it lol
Friend, I've watched a lot of your videos and learned so much from them.I'm 63 years old and been fishing 55 of them. The way you bring it to your audience is spot on. Your a very good teacher. Thank you so much, J.R
Skipping became 1000% easier when I stopped trying to roll. When I started out, I was trying to roll, hitting the water hard, blowing up reels, everything. Then I just tried a low trajectory underhand cast and got it almost immediately…now it’s just another cast. Skipping is 75% trajectory, 25% spool control…however you can get your bait moving low and parallel to the water, that’s what’s going to allow you to skip. It’s *not* a difficult cast, I promise. You just need to find what works for you. Also, you don’t need heavy braking at all. I use a metanium or an aldebaran with a sloppy spool and loose brakes…just ride it with your thumb and you’ll be fine. Lastly, understand that it’s a “special situation” cast…it’s noisy and there are many times when it’ll just spook everything. Don’t think you NEED to skip in order to work docks/overhangs correctly. More than half the time, I pitch…pitching is still the technique to perfect before anything else when it comes to docks, etc.
Another thing to try is skipping with a spinning rod. It helps you focus on the skipping motion and trajectory, while not having to focus initially on feathering the spool. Once you get the motion down, it will cut down on the amount of backlashes with a baitcaster. Also, skipping a Ned rig is a killer
Thank you- that's an awesome idea. I started already on a DC reel, made it much easier- I've had far less problems- but I'm still having some issues at times with the mechanics of the roll cast itself- releasing at the right time. I still lob the occasional bomb or shoot it into the water like a bullet instead of getting that low, straight trajectory that feathers into a skip. I think I'm trying to build too much momentum- I need to "slow my roll" in other words.
One of the better how to skip vids ive watched. Great tip with the piece of tape on the spool 50-75' in. That saves a ton on headaches. Always enjoy your vids, loaded with direct useful info. Keep up the great work.
I changed over to a 1/8th inch from filling the spool and it’s been a game changer for target/skipping frogs. Even if I need to bomb for open water I still can get the job done with the line left on the spool. Great pro-level advice for skipping from this dude!

I’m completely free spooling, (look mom no brakes lol) it’s all in the thumb and wrist. Keeping your eye on the target. Peace bro God Bless
I’m in Australia & after watching your video bought the 7’2 psychostick in both spin ( ml,m) caster ( mh,h) along with the bounty lures because none of these are or were for sale here. I must say how great the rods actually are, compliments to you for introducing me to them. I’m still practicing to get to your level of expertise. Great video, one I keep coming back to.Thank you.
Like a Boss!! The pitch skip eludes me. Being left handed it definitely helped watching you do it southpaw. Thanks for the info, awesome skip tutorial.
Man, i have followed your channel for a long time now. I have learned so much. Thanks for the details while explaining. I got myself skipping pretty decent now. I've been practicing in my pool, and now I just have to go through the different style cast and master them all the best I can. Again, I love the content. Keep the videos coming!
Been putting in the time when fish don't want to bite. Got a small pipe between two small lakes to hit. OH AND JUST BECAUSE YOU GET A COUPLE GOOD SKIPS UNDER YOUR BELT DON"T GO TURNING THOSE BRAKES OF JUST YET!!! Ask me how i know ^_- Great tip on the cheap line practice !!!
I actually logged in to leave this comment. You have great content, and superb editing. Thank you for being thorough with gear setup and technique and not taking 20 minutes with your intro, great meat and potatoes stuff here.
This is a great turorial and something ive been struggling with. Im a bank fisherman and find it harder to flip and skip using a longer rod. Seems like being in a boat provides you that extra clearance thats really helpful. Ive focused on much shorter rods as longer rods tend to make me hit the ground with my rod tip. Im sure its more user error than anything but id love to have a tip or trick from those that know what there doing.
I don’t know how to skip, but I’d assume being closer to water level makes it much easier. Same as skipping a rock. If you’re too high on the bank it’s not possible
I'm into spinning fishing for about a year now and this is the first time I hear about lure skipping. I hope it works with spinning reels too! This will definitely help finding the fish in the water under the trees without losing a whole pile of lures and money, thank you!!
Thanks so much, Tyler! you've got serious skills! i'm looking forward to when it is warm enough to practice this. i'm glad it works with chatterbaits because I use those a lot!
This was without a doubt, the best lesson I’ve ever seen on special casting. Thanks so much for the information. I know I will be spending a lot of time learning how to do that.
Well, that’s the best darn instructional video for anything, not just skippin, I’ve ever seen. Ok my man, i’ve been wanting to learn this for years, so I found this video. This weekend will be nothing but this. I don’t care if I catch a fish, I will learn how to skip following this!
Thanks Tyler! I am brand new to your channel and man, I feel like I have been missing out. Love the content and how well you break it down! As a kayak guy and fairly new to bass fishing I am doing all I can to sponge this info in. Thanks again! - Ron
You make it look so easy. I have to learn how to make the rod do 80% of the work and 20%, the feathering of the thumb. It's a learning process and my biggest mistake is to keep my arm from actually swinging and only using my wrist. The slow motion part of the video really helps. Having someone take videos of my imperfect technique will also help reveal my mistakes. Thanks!
All of this advice applies to bass boat fishing or kayaks which are stable . My advice is if u struggle skipping use a spinning rod . I’m on a kayak and don’t like to stand a lot so bought a 6’6” medium heavy spinning rod , no learning curve required, no back lashes , just whip it under trees and docks etc .
This is something I've really wanted to try working on as I just got back into fishing a year ago and had no idea how to practice it. this is an absolute banger and I wish I could like it 40 thousand times
Fun fact: Soft Plastic Frog was the name of my band back in high school. Good times. That being said, I can't skip to save my life. I fish saltwater 99.9% of the time. Grew up fishing freshwater. I only use my baitcaster when fishing select spots for Speckled trout, also the only time I toss artificial. But I have times at those spots where it will be handy. Gonna find some practice time right soon. Thanks for the great info!!
Best video I've seen from you yet. I used to skip soft plastic crawdads into little nooks and crannies in coves on Lake Conroe when I was young way back. Completely forgot about it after living in Hawaii for almost 30 years, and not freshwater fishing at all. But now I'm back on the mainland. In the northeast corner of Washington State. There's tons of sweet fishing holes, with overhanging vegetation, that this would be perfect for. Thanks for reminding me, and showing me a couple new techniques, and info as well. Good stuff, bud.
Wow....that looked like a LOT more than an 1/8th of an inch left on that spool. But, I digress... GREAT video. Backlashes suck, when you're NOT skipping, and with flouro it makes it even worse. But, this technique looks priceless or dock fishing, if you can get it down. The other problem with this technique is practicing it. You can't sit in your backyard and cast at a bucket to perfect this (unless you have a pool). You HAVE to be around water. The pro's today have taken the sport to an entirely new level. Thanks again for sharing.
Sheesh your skip game is so 🔥 lol Been trying to learn how to skip for a while now. Decent but nothing of what you're doing lol. I can get a decent skip roll casting on my dominate hand and a random pitch skip once in a while lol
I used to think I could skip a bait...until I watched this video and I realized, I was 1st grader and he has his PHD! Amazing talent and a great teaching video!
You will get a lot more reaction bite skipping. That has been my experience at least. Fishing from a Kayak, pitching and flipping is not always the best option. Skipping from the seated position is much easier for me.
@@zacharyallen671 I have found skipping easier than pitching from the seated position. For me, skipping while sitting in a kayak is completely natural at this point.
@@zacharyallen671 this video is the best I've seen on the subject. So I'd watch it several times. Allowing the rod tip to drift upwards toward the end of the cast is key. A fluke on a spinning set up is a really good place to start. If you want to see a kayak angler that can skip really well. Watch Kristine Fischer.
I love how happy you are each time you pull off a skip during the uncut section! That makes me want to go out in my backyard right now with a weight and start practicing right now.... in the middle of the night, like a meth addict mowing their lawn.
Amazing! This is just the video I've been looking for! I've watched other skipping tutorials, but not one has yet put everything I need together in one video. I think I might actually be able to skip at a level that approaches below average instead of absolutely abysmal in a month or two of practicing! Thanks!
If your new to this technique shimanos dc reels will limit your backlash better than any other reel due to the DC braking technology. Diawa Tatulas are great too due to the sv spool & can also checkout video on new Okuma Hakai reels coming out 2022. On these 3 reels notice the spools. These spools are bigger versus the small tiny spools , & thus bigger spools backlash a lot less due to inertia force & holding less line , thus limits a backlash. Get the right equipment , master the technique, then you will have confidence & experience to try the lesser quality "skipping" reels to gain knowledge in understanding the majority of reel types & usages. Hope this helped you out. Tightlines.
@@danielmcnish6555 Thanks for the gear advice! I have actually improved in leaps and bounds with my current assortment of reels. I was out on a reservoir a few days ago and I was feeling like a superstar! Today, though, I was really inconsistent; those days are becoming fewer and fewer. I think I'm going to use electrical tape on the spool to minimise how much fluffs up on days like today. With my wacky rigs on a spinning reel and my jigs on my Tatula Elite Pitching/Flipping reel I can skip quite far when I can't reposition myself quick enough (or I just don't feel like it). I just need to work on my aim and hitting smaller and smaller targets.
@@Grimey_Fishing Great job. Yeah that is where those Shimano DC reels shine as you can focus less on worrying about a backlash due to low confidence/experience & can focus more on those pinpoint casts/skips. Just takes time, you will get there. Tightlines brother.
Pro tip: when you’re learning to skip - make a long cast with your bait (longer than the distance when you skip cast) and put a piece of electrical tape in the spool before reeling back in. You’re gonna back lash a ton when learning and this will keep you from completely ruining your day with a deep backlash.
@@sicariofishing yes it’s safe to assume I didn’t watch 16 minutes of you skipping, and failed to catch a small comment you made. How dense of me…didn’t mean to trigger you my guy. The water is all yours…
I gotta try this. I can skip pretty well with a spinning reel but fear of a catastrophic backlash has always kept me from trying with a baitcaster. Putting some tape on the spool with about 75 feet of line out is brilliant, I never thought of that.
@@BassFishingHQ So you're close, that's great. I work and travel with the Indiana Pacers. If you are near the Cleveland area you need to come to a game this season when we play them, or drive over to Indy and come to a home game. I'll get you set up with tics and would like to meet and fish with you at some point. Do you guide there in Ohio?
I saw this cast in other videos. One guy said something negative about overhead casting, so I tried to figure it out and got nowhere. Actually, when it wasn’t going nowhere, it was going everywhere. So thanks for the video. I’ll try it again.
Reminds me of speech class at Kilbourne! I remember you bringing in a couple Loomis rods and doing a speech on pitching and flipping! Still killing it Ty! Rediscovered bass fishing during the pandemic, got me a tin boat and started fishing some pot tourneys! Stoked to see you’re still deep into the fishing game brother 👊🏼 Stumbled on your channel recently and it is absolutely awesome, Congrats man!
@@BassFishingHQ Doing good man! Flipping houses and fishing every chance I get, safe to say I’m obsessed. I’ve still got a long way to go to be skipping like you but the skill set is starting to come together one piece at a time. Still fishing the tournament scene or all teaching these days!?
today I am going to show you 6 different ways to create the best birds nests, I need to keep practicing for sure because I struggle with all my underhand casts. thank you for the informational video.
Tyler, this is an awesome tutorial video. As a teacher here in South Africa i will be proud of a lesson like this one. I hope your baby is better. God bless.
Tyler thank you for the slow motion casting sequence because many of the skipping videos don’t emphasize this enough in my humble opinion. Maybe the way of showing this technique could be like showing a golf or bat swing?
Hands down, this is the best skipping tutorial video I’ve ever watched. I can’t wait to get out on the boat. When I come home from work tomorrow, I’m throwing my gear in the boat and I’m gone! Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the great information. Great video. I am not even in the same ballpark as you. One thing that helped me learn the basics was I started off on my spinning reel. Once I got relatively descent on the spinning reels, then I went to my baitcasters. My bait casting skipping is still a work in progress which is why I came to watch your video. I’m birds nesting 3-4 of every 10 casts right now and I’d like to get that down a little.
I have tried use my Abu garcia B-max 3 practice skipping with 6 inches swimbait and it works pretty good, I tried skip a wacky senko with spinning reel and it quite easy to skip but not easy to control the distance to stop it. using baitcaster reel is much easier to control the spot once get the skill & settings right.
I've watched this video several times and really like your technique for teaching. I do have a couple of questions though based on the lure in this video... 1. How do you rig your bounty fish 158? 2. Can you use a hook swivel with the bounty fish 158? I ask the second because I only bring one rod when fishing, and I hate trying to re-tie the line every time I want to change my lure! Thank you!
Well just spent about 2.5 hours at a local pond practicing and all I can say is I sure got good at… taking out backlashes. I was starting to get it but practice practice practice. It’s like golf, those good skips just keep you coming back. Seemed like keeping the rod tip low for a moment before the lift up follow through worked
See I’m deadly when skipping on a spinning rod. All of the old timers in my bass club can’t skip. They’re all blown away with how good I am. I’ve started learning how to skip with a baitcaster, and I’m getting there, but a video like this, definitely helps!
I’m right there with you bro. Spinning rod is what I grew up using. And I can skip with my 7’3 spinning rod for a mile lol. Just got into baitcasters about a yr ago and it’s a process to learn a new reel for skipping and flipping. Got the flipping down pat now still practicing the skip.
Great instructions! Thx. Now to practice a little. You could also suggest to people with spinning rods to get the motion and feel using a spinning rod because it is definitely more forgiving. Skipping with a spinning rod actually helps with keeping it closer to the water using the same motion.
Really good video for skipping i started with a spinner and texas rigged senkos pegged then once i got that down under docks i grabbed the baitcaster and a jig it just takes some time
Great skipping video. He teaches very well and organized which makes it easy to understand the material. Overall the best UA-camr for teaching fishing stuff. Him and TylerReelFishing are a great combo for learning whether you are new to fishing or experienced
Great info seriously… I’m used to it but I prefer skipping 7,27”3 fast action gotten where pitching I like my 7”6 st croix to j Morris carbonlite I spend more for my pitchin gesr and flippin 7.5 8 plus and the looser breaks easier but gotta get used the chatterbaits a great skipper even at half oz…helps around timber getting them baits lightly in areas and under overhangs it’s paid off in tourneys.. great info.. half in half out on my breaks like my tatulas too flippin
This is a great video! Thank you! Not sure why I haven’t run across you before how, I did hit the button and want be missing any more of your videos…. Thanks…. FYI I’d say 85% of my cast are the underside roll, I started this 30 years ago throwing smaller jigs and worms in to the wind! I just never thought about trying to skid with that cast. I’ll give it a try and let you know how it works out…

Rod: Okuma Psycho Stick 7’2” MH

I’m in Australia & after watching your video bought the 7’2 psychostick in both spin ( ml,m) caster ( mh,h) along with the bounty lures because none of these are or were for sale here.
I must say how great the rods actually are, compliments to you for introducing me to them. I’m still practicing to get to your level of expertise. Great video, one I keep coming back to.Thank you.
The best tutorial that I've found for teaching the skip cast. Well done!
This is the only lure skipping video that I've seen that actually tells you how to do this. Well done!
You can. It works decent. It doesn't look as magical for some reason though. 😅😅
That was a good tutorial bud! Especiqlly the "good gear" part, I bought the tatula sv tw103 and it made my skipping twice as easy.
You are a legend! This is not only a great skip casting tutorial, but also a masterclass in rod and reel setup. Thank you!
Thanks so much, Tyler! you've got serious skills! i'm looking forward to when it is warm enough to practice this. i'm glad it works with chatterbaits because I use those a lot!
what color chatter baits do you use?
This was without a doubt, the best lesson I’ve ever seen on special casting.
Thanks so much for the information. I know I will be spending a lot of time learning how to do that.
Awesome skipping vid. Definitely one of the best on that subject. Skipping is where I really want to up my game. Thanks for the tips
Well, that’s the best darn instructional video for anything, not just skippin, I’ve ever seen. Ok my man, i’ve been wanting to learn this for years, so I found this video. This weekend will be nothing but this. I don’t care if I catch a fish, I will learn how to skip following this!
By far the best skipping tutorial I’ve seen - great job and thanks so much 😊‼️
I've watched a lot of these videos lately and this one has the best demonstrations so far. Great stuff.
Thanks Tyler! I am brand new to your channel and man, I feel like I have been missing out. Love the content and how well you break it down! As a kayak guy and fairly new to bass fishing I am doing all I can to sponge this info in. Thanks again! - Ron
BEST TUTORIAL EVER!!!!!!
Thanks so much for “the magic revealed” at long last. Many have tried, but all but you have failed. Thank you.
Thanks!
This is one of the best videos ever done on the subject. Much respect.
Thanks so much for making this video! I can't wait until this spring so I can try some of these techniques!
Never tried that and been fishing 60 plus years LOL. Now you got me interested in trying. Have a lot of soft plastics like you described.
Watched a TON of videos on how to skip. By FAR this was the best and most comprehensive in 1 video!!! Nice job. New subscriber.
Great tutorial Video! You really make it look easy!
This is something I've really wanted to try working on as I just got back into fishing a year ago and had no idea how to practice it. this is an absolute banger and I wish I could like it 40 thousand times
Him- "u don't have to spend 300 on a rod a reel combo to skip"
Me- lookin at my Daiwa Steez on a G-loomis NRX still not able to skip
Fun fact: Soft Plastic Frog was the name of my band back in high school. Good times. That being said, I can't skip to save my life. I fish saltwater 99.9% of the time. Grew up fishing freshwater. I only use my baitcaster when fishing select spots for Speckled trout, also the only time I toss artificial. But I have times at those spots where it will be handy. Gonna find some practice time right soon. Thanks for the great info!!
You teach this better than Andy Montgomery himself! You rock this bro- thank you🎣
Best video I've seen from you yet.
Thanks for watching dude. Go get em!
👏 Quite impressive brotha. Wish I had more opportunities to use skipping. Keep up the great vids 👍
Sheesh your skip game is so 🔥 lol
Been trying to learn how to skip for a while now.
In your opinion it's easier sitting? I thought it would be harder, but I'm just starting to try this
@@zacharyallen671 I have found skipping easier than pitching from the seated position. For me, skipping while sitting in a kayak is completely natural at this point.
@@cjfishtales2238 well that's good news for me since I will do most of my skipping from a kayak, I plan on practicing alot soon
This is absolutely the best video I have ever seen on skipping. All that's left is practice
Great video 🎣🤙
Seriously impressive casting skills, most people have no idea how tough that is!
Pro tip: when you’re learning to skip - make a long cast with your bait (longer than the distance when you skip cast) and put a piece of electrical tape in the spool before reeling back in. You’re gonna back lash a ton when learning and this will keep you from completely ruining your day with a deep backlash.
That’s exactly what he said to do
@@SPFLDAngler I think he commented before watching the video 🤦🏻
Is it safe to assume you actually didn't watched the video?
@@sicariofishing yes it’s safe to assume I didn’t watch 16 minutes of you skipping, and failed to catch a small comment you made. How dense of me…didn’t mean to trigger you my guy. The water is all yours…
@@thebroadwyz lmao you again failed to read, I'm not even the person who posted the video 🤦🏻
I gotta try this. I can skip pretty well with a spinning reel but fear of a catastrophic backlash has always kept me from trying with a baitcaster. Putting some tape on the spool with about 75 feet of line out is brilliant, I never thought of that.
Yo, that's fire brother. Good stuff. What part of the country are you in?
I live in Ohio
@@BassFishingHQ Thot I recognized the accent. I was born an raised between Pittsburgh and the state lines
One of THE BEST skipping videos I have EVER seen!! You improved my skipping 1000 percent!!
I can’t remember what bait company it was I seen but the bounty fish is fixing to hit the u.s.
Carney! What’s up brother? Good to hear you fishing again!
Took a break from the bassmaster opens this year to focus on UA-cam. Still fishing local tourneys but hope to be back to the Opens next year
I am a noob, the advice for putting electrical tape on the spool saved me so much time and frustration! Thanks for this excellent video!!!!!
This video just cemented my inferiority complex. Thx
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
best tutorial on UA-cam bro. Even though I've already learned to skip, there was still stuff in here that will help me out a ton. Appreciate it.
today I am going to show you 6 different ways to create the best birds nests, I need to keep practicing for sure because I struggle with all my underhand casts. thank you for the informational video.
Tyler, this is an awesome tutorial video. As a teacher here in South Africa i will be proud of a lesson like this one. I hope your baby is better. God bless.
Great explanation of this. Especially like the idea of putting tape on the spool to minimize the bird nest.
The Megasbass Darksleeper 3.8 inch, one ounce is one of the best intro skipping lures!
I could watch the first 20 seconds all day! Haha my favorite thing in the world. Great tips as always brotha! I even learned stuff.
Yea bro, amazing video. I’ve been watching all your stuff recently and you’re one of the best. Appreciate you taking time to put this stuff together.
Thank you!
You're a good teacher! Many good tips! The best one was use mono line!
Bro….. your skip game is on a ridiculous level. Mad props
I’ll give it a try and let you know how it works out…
とても勉強になりました。

Best video! Great guy with great instructions
