    September here in the midwest is a great time to collect seeds from many plants..
    Today collecting, saving , seed from my numerous daylilies I have here on our farm..
    Daylilies are a perennial and winter really well here in the midwest.
    What you want to look for is dry brown pods that sit above the foliage, these pods were from the flowers earlier in the season..
    The pods start out green , then turn to a brownest tan color.. they are ready to harvest when you see the pods splitting open .. sometimes if you are not careful the seeds fall to the ground and sometimes they will grow into a new plant , with a new flower like mine did in this video..
    This was a really neat thing to see happen and the flower was nothing like the original plant having a unique color.
    Make sure the pods are thoroughly dry , after you pick them , you can let the pods dry a bit longer , remove the seeds , let them dry a bit longer to be on the safe side..
    Then store in a cool dark area , and plant the following year indoors to get a headstart on growing.
    I have heard it takes 3 yrs or better to flower from seed.. I guess I may find out if I decide to grow them next winter..
    Hope you enjoyed this video.. thanks for watching!

    I stuck seeds I collected this summer straight in some pots and about 1/2 of them sprouted and they are small plants now. Too bad it takes years for them to bloom. Silly kitty wants to get into everything. My cat is the same way!

    Dale, if you have diploids (Stella de Oro for instance) and tetraploids then they will not cross with each other. Dips have 11 chromosomes and tets have 22 chromosones. Some tets never produce seed pods....well known fact in the industry. Dips are the most fertile and easiest to reproduce. They can have the most stunning flowers too. Some hybridizers will pay hundreds of dollars to have a diploid converted chemically to a tetraploid for breeding purposes!

    it is very possible many of these seeds are duds.. I will be refrigerating for a time , then trying a few methods for germination.. should be fun and hopefully will share my progress... if it doesn't work not out much , but if it does it will inspire others to do so.. thanks for your input~!

    well I do most seeds like this as far as germinating I will try.. this isn't something I have done however.. I may have to try and germinate just to see later this year.. You never know , there is usually different ways to do any type of collecting and gardening I find.. You should really do videos on this if you are having success it could help many... I am just playing around with this .. I feel I can get them to work this way.. time will tell and will have a update later..

    I was looking a tutorial just before yours from an horticultural guy from Ladybugs day lilies and he showed us that the pod that was green and you said that it was not time, he said that as soon that the green pod begin to open, you can pick it up and make it become brown and mature to have the seeds. He put his pods in an ice tray and let it dry! If this can help you ...

    Most of my Daylilies don't produce seed, I've always wondered why.

  • @22justus24U
    @22justus24U 11 років тому +2

    Don't know what your experience is with daylily seeds, but this is nothing like I do. I wait about 40 days after pollenizing and watch for the still green pod to crack slightly (they are still moist, black and very plump). I harvest and dry for three days. They are placed in labeled zippy bags and refrigerated until time to plant. If mine dry to the state yours are, I throw them out. They are almost impossible to germinate. I do a thousand a year and find this works the best for good plants.

      this is way late but going through my videos to improve them,, I am happy this way works as well.. there is always different ways and sometimes will also produce results.. :)

    I had one seed pod on my daylily I was so looking forward to harvesting seeds from any someone snapped it off and through it on the ground. I am so sad. Hoping maybe the seeds will still mature

    just watched a video on daylilies and she shows that if you removethe seed pods before they turn brown,the plantwill flower again!!

    • @dianemummvideos
      @dianemummvideos  10 років тому +1

      yes it may encourage rebloom just depends on the daylily, weather, etc..

    • @thistlosopher
      @thistlosopher 9 років тому +3

      +Diane Mumm Garden Videos I read that you can harvest immature seeds and they will ripen if left to dry out and brown, if you can predictably cause the rebloom you could essentially double the seeds you harvest. Worth some experimentation I'd say.

    I read cats are fatally allergic to all kinds of lilies. I would be careful with them around eating the seeds.

      yes I know this ... I have had many pets over the years have not noticed an issue but yes I am aware.. and may try and downsize my lily patches.. although it is going to be a lot of work.. 😁

    Where exactly is the seed pod? At the base of the spent flower? I never see any on mine. The flower dries up and that is it.

    • @dianemummvideos
      @dianemummvideos  7 років тому +1

      on the long stem of the spent flower, some do not go to seed and some do.. you will definitely see the pod when they do form, I harvest seeds when they turn brown and the seeds are black..

I have done a manual cross pollination between a dark burgundy one and a light orange and I really want to save the pods but the dang blooms die and fall off taking the pods with them :( help please!! thank you in advance :)
