- Video Series: Part 1: Germinating Daylily Seeds: I will show you step by step how to get great germination without a lot of fuss. We use paper towels, little baggies, and a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water to get our daylily seeds growing. Daylily seeds require cold stratification to germinate. You can grow your seeds indoors over the winter by using your refrigerator to mimic winter for them. You do this by placing them in the refrigerator for a minimum of 3-5 weeks prior to the date you want to germinate them. Once you remove them, you'll add water and leave at room temperature until the seeds sprout and you can pot them up! Follow along and let's grow together! Visit my Facebook Page to join our "Live" Q&A grow sessions and connect with others growing their seed during the winter!

I followed your instructions and had 100% germination. This was my fist time having success. Thank you so much for your advice.
I Shelly, I have been following your channel for years, sorry I don’t always comment, but always give you a 👍. I have found that the best process for starting day Lilly’s seeds. I put on a pair of gloves and take the seed and sand it a little just until I see the white. Then I put it into a quite damp paper towel inside of a baggy and put it under my sink ( warm dark place) check it everyday. Usually within a week, mostly all have sprouted and I plant them up. I do the same with canna Lilly’s. They look exactly the same as they day Lilly seeds do. I have been wanting the ruby spiders for soo long and can not get my hands on it. I signed up for your news letter in hopes of getting it as well as some of your other seeds you offer! Especially the echinaceas! Absolutely adore you and your family . And love your videos. So happy you are posting more videos! Congratulations on your new property and beautiful barn! You are so blessed and deserve it! 🫶
Thanks for the comment and info! I will def have Ruby spiders for sale in the fall! I’m starting to collect seeds now for the giveaway and hopefully some extra to sell as well! Thanks for signing up to the newsletter, I will be announcing the sale ahead of time for subscribers… ❤️
Wow, so glad you're back!! Hope you had a Merry Christmas. Looking forward to 2023!!
Thanks Jody!
I'm excited to see your process! Bonny
Thanks Bonny! Can’t wait to share the progress!
I am so excited to do this!!!
Yay!! ❤ You’re gonna do great! I can’t wait to see the blooms!
Wonderful video. Love your practical set up and advice. The hydrogen peroxide helps with suppressing algae growth. I use a small amount in water gardens. Great idea. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm.
(you remind me of Jane Roberts. Her husband was a painter)
Yes! Algae growth suppression! My brain kept going to mold for some reason but that it what I was going for! Thank you!
Just took my seeds from my own garden out of the fridge today! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
good technique... I'll try it!!!
Yes. 2023 !!!!woohoo
I collected seeds this fall but didn't create the crosses. Nature did. I do know which daylily is the pod parent, mostly by color, since I don't know all the names of my 30 year old daylilies. I started 22 seeds, 5 different varieties, on Dec 4th, and today, Dec 26th, I have 11 plants growing from 4 varieties. I wish I had seen this video then because I may have had more success. I did not know about the hydrogen peroxide, so all I used was our well water. I had some seeds that germinated but never grew, and although you said not to scarify them, 5 of my sprouts came from scarified seeds. I only did that because they hadn't germinated and thought it couldn't hurt; either they'll grow or never germinate. I was shocked that they grew.
I will follow along with your videos at this point and hopefully get some pointers on what to do next. They're growing in a south facing window and under grow lights when there's no sun. (Maryland, zone 7) So far, so good.
Thanks for the tips you sent me back in Sept, which helped get me to this point in my daylily seed propagation journey. It's quite fun. I hope they'll flower this year!
Awesome! It sounds like you’re off to a good start! Scarifying isn’t necessary but if you had success doing it with stubborn seeds, that’s amazing! You’re going to do great! ❤️
I have to get supplies, just found the seeds!
Hey Shelley, I just purchased from your store, but it said there was a problem. I look forward to growing your babies in my Foley, AL garden. Love your videos!!!!
Hey Robin! I don’t see your name on any orders from today… is there another name it would be under? You can send me an email or message on Facebook with which cross you were looking for… 🙂
Where can I find her store?
Curious about what you think about nipping the brown off the root.? Like cutting roots from a pot bound plant. How's the barn project going.?
2023 growing season! Let’s go!! I am SO ready! This will be my first time growing lilies from seed. I can’t wait to see what I get. 😊
Awesome!!! It’s so fun to anticipate the new blooms!! Good luck! ❤
Very informational video! This is the first year I crossed and germinated daylily seeds. I only kept tract of the pod parent, next year I will document each plant. But now have 30 daylily plants under grow lights. The seeds I purchased from you are now sprouting and will have to pot them up. I can't wait for the live session!
Nice!! Can’t wait to chat with you! How exciting! ❤️
I know you started mid December but can I start now? End of May
The only difference between what u did n I did was I poured the water into a small container and dipped the corner of the paper in the container into it had enough saturation.
Hi I have been watching your video. How does it work on your show tonight. When doing the milk jugs do we leave the lid on are off out side it’s four o’clock in the morning I told I watch you lot. Thanks
Hey Judy! So for winter sowing you leave the tops on until the temps warm up enough and frost is not a concern ❤️ I am sending you poppy seeds and echinacea seeds. Give it a week or so in the mail. 😉
Where can I buy your seeds?
Will all the seeds from one pod give the same results or is it seed specific?
Seed specific! So if you collect 17 seeds, all will be different. It’s quite fascinating!
How long can they stay refrigerated?
As long as you’d like them too and as long as they don’t get mushy!
I'd rather winter sowing in jugs than indoor seeding...
Easier and cheaper and noooo harding off the plants and wayyyy cheaper 🌱❤️🌱
Totally would work! The benefit of indoor sowing over the winter is that it gives you something to tend to while the outside world is dormant and you will get to see your blooms quicker. If you winter sow (which is a great option!), you will most likely see blooms in years 2-3 versus indoor starting where you can see them bloom the same year or the following season. ❤️
@@GuidingGreenThumbsI love wintersowing and do it every year, but getting to see the plants bloom the first year is irresistible- I will be starting them inside for sure!
Hello, how long does it take from seed to flower? Does it really take 2 years?
If you start the seed indoors over winter, you can see a bloom in Aug/Sept if the same year (which is why many people do start them early). If planted in the ground or you wait until spring to plant seeds, yes, it can take 2-3 years to see a bloom. 😊
Hi.... I could use some advice... I have several hundred daylily seeds, all three years old. They have been kept in refrig the entire time. Some tried to sprout while in refrig and I have thrown those out... smelly :(
I have tried the paper towel method. I first am soaking the seeds overnight and then placing on damp paper towel and into the baggy or a container with lid. Mold on seeds and towel has been TERRIBLE with very low success rate. I have more recently rinsed the seeds in 3% hydrogen peroxide hoping to "clean" them and placed them in baggy containing damp perlite, hoping to cut down on mold growth on the seeds.
Any ideas on dealing with these old seeds appreciated....
I use hydrogen peroxide in the the water to wet the paper towel while germinating. If they don’t germinate at room temp in the first week- 2 weeks, I change the entire paper towel. They should sprout at the latest 3-4 weeks. Are the seeds still firm? I have never tried to sprout 3 year old seeds before so I cannot help with the viability of older seeds. I am not sure how long they are good for. Winter sowing might be a better option for them. Let nature germinate them naturally.
Please let me know how I can purchase some of your seeds. I will grow them indoors for the winter to get a jump on next spring! Thanks and God Bless!
too cute for not subscribing
Love how she ignores the Dad jokes.
How can we buy daylily seeds from you and how much? Thanks!
Hey Judy! Thanks for asking. I sell seeds on my website (guidinggreenthumbs.com) but I’m sold out for this year. If you follow my Facebook page, or sign up for my newsletter on the website, I announce when they go live for sale. 😊
Mam I get some seeds please I am very very much plant lover
Is it too late to start the cold stratification?
Nope! You can start anytime! Minimum 3 weeks 😊
@@GuidingGreenThumbs Do you have to do cold stratification? I had seeds from a lily pod after it was done blooming and I kept it on a shelf through the rest of fall and over the winter. Not even in a bag. They are dried, will they still grow? Should I put them in the frig now?
I hope you're right. I'll try it exactly as you said, but I doubt it is possible to grow a daylily from a seed. I have planted, soaked, cooled, warmed over 2000 seeds, and not a single one has germinated.
Wow! I currently have over 200 seedlings growing in my basement from seed I started exactly the way I describe. Check out my Facebook page… in the photos you’ll see the progress. Where did you get your seeds?
@@GuidingGreenThumbs I'm going to follow your advice to the letter.
They do look like ticks.😂
😂
Glad I found you, have germinted seeda last winter, I purchased so many, I have aboout 12 plants that survived now planted in a garden box. Hoping to transplant into ground this fall! Or should I individually plant them in grow bags? Anyway I'm trying to find you on fb, please tell me the name of your group so I can join in! Living upstate New York! Also just watched this video and your #2 video, and am germinating the remainder of seeds I have!❤
I have a Facebook page here: facebook.com/GreenThumbDesigner?mibextid=LQQJ4d I start a seed starting session in December with live group checkins along the way every few weeks!
I would definitely overwinter in the ground (whether that’s in pots or without). NY winters are harsh and even more harsh in pots above ground.
How do I purchase from you???
Hey Tina! I have a website where I listed my crosses available… www.guidinggreenthumbs.com, there are only a few left but I announce the seed availability on my Facebook page and in my website newsletter if you enter your email there as well. ❤
I'm going to put them in the freezer for a month, then bake them at 500 degrees. Then they'll know the seasons have changed.
Did it and 100% failure rate. I know you do it, but if someone asked me, I"d tell them daylilies don't grow from seeds. They just sit there, like pea gravel. There is no way to make a seed germinate. You can grow them from roots, but not seeds.
Not true, I grew many from seed pods!
