    I've been saving seeds for years, which I share with family and friends. When our daughters were young, we rented a farmhouse. They had black and white cows on the farm and of course, we told the girls that these cows were Holsteins. The first purple Hyacinth Bean vines I ever planted was on a trellis by that house, and I saved the seeds. Our youngest daughter got so excited when she saw the saved (black and white) beans because she thought I was saving cow seeds! LOL

    Having watched your question and answer videos about collecting seeds back in the spring, I started to see all the potential plants that can give me seed. Now I am hooked!

    I'm on light duty after surgery, so saving seeds is a good activity for me. I have some celosia seeds saved already. I might sneak over and seed my neighbor's flowerbed. Teehee

    Thanks for all the tips on saving seeds.The good news is that in Trinidad sunflowers,zinnias and celosias are always in bloom because of the wet and dry season.I have the velvet queen sunflowers and they are really beautiful.💕👍🌻

    Thank you, Allen! The birds are certainly enjoying the sunflower heads! Another reason to sow MORE! 🌿🐝🐦. I plant cleome every year and they are always a showstopper.

      There are good reasons I call sunflower seeds Friendmakers.
      That goes for all the birds that visit, as well as the one single squirrel (either a mama to be or recently had a litter) who has been enjoying the buds at the far end of the yard (safe from the two neighbor cats that practically live over here).
      I actually enjoy watching her chew off a bud and carry it away to either much in peace or hide and forget. She can have all she wants. I have even named her. I figured Sonnenblume would be a perfect name for a sunflower loving squirrel. :)

    Hi, thanks for the 10 flowers video. Where are you located? I live in the Idaho panhandle, zone 6A. I’m wondering if all 10 of the flowers grow in my zone. I do grow cosmos, poppies sunflowers, sweet William, clover, larkspur and a lot of other flowers. Thanks again for your video.

    Is the Hyacinth bean plant also known as Jacob's bean plant? I love it!! Thank you for your wonderful videos!

      @@PAllenSmith I'm not sure. My mom in law gave us a white envelope with the beans that read Jacobs beans on front! So we planted them and I remember the very large dark purple bean pods. This was at our Allen house years ago. I really did like the vines. Very pretty flowers and beans!

    You have further inspired me to increase my seed saving. Just wished I would have saved the flower heads earlier in season when I was dead heading! How long would one leave the seeds in the freezer?

    I see you ate the flowers from the hyacinth bean vine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the pods and seeds very poisonous?

    • @Wazupiseeyou
      @Wazupiseeyou 5 років тому

      Isn’t it the actual beans where they have to be cooked for a long time?

    • @PAllenSmith
      @PAllenSmith  5 років тому +1

      The uncooked seed can be dangerous. Young leaves, flowers, and tender, immature pods are edible raw or cooked. The ripe seeds are eaten cooked, either boiled or roasted. In Asia, they are made into noodles. The Hyacinth Bean is cultivated as a vegetable throughout the tropics.

      @@PAllenSmith yes, one can stir fry the beans. Have to use a sharp knife to cut off the tip and peel it along the whole bean. Used alot in authentic South Indian dishes.
