The industry built up around cars and the government itself make too much money to want to stop people driving completely. Road tax, fuel duty, insurance, MOT and servicing costs. And remember, all of the car makers, dealerships used car salesmen and insurance companies all pay vast amounts of tax to the government on their slice of the car pie. Add to this list everyone who has to commute to work and then pays massive amounts of tax and national insurance to the government on what they earn.

My new Mazda I’ve had for 5 weeks is fitted with Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA). Driving on a 60mph road and getting continuous audio chimes because the system has picked a 20mph sign on a side road is a major distraction. I turn off my audio warning all the time as identifying the wrong speed limit sign or failing to pick up the correct limit happens regularly. The Mazda manual encourages you not to turn off the speed audio warnings as it turns off all the other audio warnings. Unfortunately you have too as it regularly identifies the wrong limit. If cars were forced to slow down I can see accidents happening and a lot of road rage.

This isn't for "safety" it's so that your ID is connected with your walking & the first fine you will get is when you cross the road when the lights aren't permitting you to do so. My car has it now, you can switch it on or off in cruise but it recognises speed signs and adjusts the speed automatically - you can then tweek it up or down if you wish to whatever you want - You have to do that again if you want to alter it at whatever the next speed limit change is (ie 30-40 etc). It works really well, I'm sure its saved me many a ticket, its so easy to creep over a 20 limit.

    • @house89147
      @house89147 Місяць тому

Me too, I drive with my limiter on most of the time and do over 20k per year. It's saved me several times (a year) on motorways and on a few roads where they like to hide. The best time was the idiot desperate to overtake me while I was doing the speed limit in Birmingham. Came round a blind corner and there was a police officer with a camera right in front of us. From that point the guy behind me was perfectly happy doing the speed limit. I also loved the local volunteers who tracked me down the entire road when I was locked to exactly 40, I gave them a wave as they grimmised at me, my wife and cousin were both driving behind me and had caught me up so I saved them tickets too.
At the end of the day you can put your foot hard on the accelerator if you need to get out of the way of someone, but the rest of the time it's nice to know you're not going to be funding more cameras and getting stealth taxed.

Fully automated speed limiters based on current technology are dangerous. Not a mile from my house there is a bypass rated at 60 mph. However, as I approach the bypass 9, times of 10, my car fails to report the change in speed so I get an alarm telling me I am exceeding 30 mph when I am actually doing 40 in a 60.
Where this gets dangerous is when roads of different speeds pass over each other such as the A46 East of Bath. The road is a 50 mph limit but as the A46 passes under the A46, which is a 30 mph junction, the system gets confused. For a short distance my car is confused and reports it should be doing 30 whilst in a 50. If the brakes were applied automatically, the sudden braking for no apparent reason would at some point result in me getting rear-ended.

Will the police have the ability to cut the power of your car remotely? I got driven off the road by a lorry once and I did not have enough power to fully overtake on a dual carriageway. I do not want to work out what buttons to press when in an emergency. I do not believe in FSD and lane assist. GPS signals are worse in Cities with a lot of high rise buildings.

Does it also account for roadworks and smart motorways, people will have to use their brains - that is never good (See UK elections where they were all of automatic self driving mode off a cliff)
I do not have an issue with this as I am always falling into 60-50 or 30 zones without knowing, I do not agree with tracking and this will tracking and the automatic guilt through driver telemetry.
New EV and new gas cars are just expensive 10 year IOT disposable devices on wheels, could you imagine getting a new screen for your 20 year old EV? There are too many bespoke screens and the cybersecurity on these IOT devices after 10 years will be a dangerous nightmare for software updates. Will netflix/Disney+/UA-cam work on these infotainment systems.

Good! I drive in London with lots of 20mph speed limits - actually rephrase that and its the real problem - lots of 20/30/20/40/20 speed limits that are clearly intended to catch you out by their variation. Going just a couple of mph over the speed limit at 20 is very easy to do, a fine is one thing but points are really harsh in this situation. So, I love that the car will automatically change my speed to the prevailing limit. Why on earth would I want to knowingly drive over the limit?? Embrace it, drive within the law and nothing to grizzle about.

@@ireallylovegod Not true - There is 100% speed control available to the driver. My current car does what you say, ie if it spots a sign by the side of the road it sometimes amends the speed to that, up or down - but it is overridden by using brakes or throttle immediately. The new version (version 2 ) is controlled using GPS, Road Signs, and internal mapping - however, it is completely overridable. See here:
"The new speed limit software, also called Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), is a system designed to automatically regulate a car's speed based on the posted limit. Here's a breakdown of how it works:
      Using a combination of technologies:
GPS data: The car's GPS system tracks its location and identifies the road it's on.
Speed sign recognition cameras: Cameras mounted on the car scan for speed limit signs along the road.
Sat-nav (satellite navigation): The car's navigation system can also provide stored speed limit information for specific roads.
By comparing this information, the ISA system can determine the current speed limit.
      Enforcing the speed limit:
If the car goes above the limit, the ISA can intervene in a couple of ways (depending on the manufacturer's choice):
Warnings: The system might give audible or visual warnings like beeps or flashing lights on the dashboard.
Engine power restriction: In some cases, the ISA can limit engine power to gradually reduce the car's speed down to the legal limit. It won't slam on the brakes but instead make it harder to accelerate.
      Driver override:
Drivers typically have the option to override the ISA by pressing firmly on the accelerator pedal. This deactivates the system for that journey, but it usually resets upon restarting the car.
      Important to note:
ISA is meant to be an assistant, not an autonomous driving system. The ultimate responsibility for following the speed limit lies with the driver.
While some systems may restrict engine power, they are not designed to bring the car to a complete stop.
This technology is being implemented with the aim of improving road safety by reducing speeding violations.
In short, its safer and quite frankly will stop you having to peer at your speedo constantly, or if you are a chav, you can just floor it everywhere as normal

I have this system on my 2 yr old car but permanently switched to just flash a speed limit sign on the dash , problem is that it is consistently wrong , journey through mid wales the car insisting it was 20mph for 20 miles of 60 mph road after we left a village . Randomly reading speed limits from side roads and the back of european lorries , if the new systems are not better then cars randomly slowing down will be interesting for following cars. This has been mandated by the eu , manufacturers have to fit them or cannot sell cars in europe .

I have a Kia Niro HEV which I love but the one thing that I really hate about it is that the lane assist is ON by default and if I forget to turn it off I drive down the street I live in which has parked cars on both sides and as soon as I pull out to overtake the first parked car my steering wheel is yanked back alarmingly. Why is this feature ON by default?!! This speeding thing will be even worse.

In the Netherlands the roads are used to the max.
Every day you have traffic jams at the same locations.
Mainly because nobody keeps a gap in between them and the one in front of them.
If people would keep open a gap wide enough to fit in 2 or maybe 3 lorries, 18 wheeler length kinda lorries, traffic would keep flowing.
BUT, people also have to adjust their speed to the speed of the lorry.
And so: IF everyone were to drive the same speed as lorries, and we would all keep open a gap in front of us so people can merge onto the motor way or get off of it, then it would all keep flowing nicely.
In the Netherlands the distances to travel are not that much. If you want to travel from the most north-western point to the most south-eastern point, its like say 300 kilometers? Maybe a bit more.
If you travel with 100 kilometers an hour and could have that as an average speed, it would take 3 hours.
BUT there is no way to travel the entire distance with an average of 100 kilometers per hour.
If you were to travel with 80 kilometers per hour, it would take you roughly 3.75 hours.
That is again if you could travel with a certain average speed.
    Nonsense.
Me and several co workers have put money on it several times.
They start their journey going as fast as the lorry allows.... 83 kilometers per hour.
And me, i just put it on 80.
I arrive at my destination 2 to 3 minutes later than they did.
Lorry drivers who overtake with just 1 kilometer an hour difference, in the Netherlands, they are just crazy.
It only wins them what? 1 minute? 2?
Or, they jump the queue. They want to be in front of you to unload or load.
    Sad people, really.
There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but not many old bold pilots around.
Same goes for the people on the roads.
Most who drive like crazy win the Darwin Award. Sometimes taking innocent people with them to Saint Petrus.
Personally i think we are on the roads to try to get from A to B safely.
    And speed?
The difference between traveling at 80 kilometer an hour or 100 is not worth mentioning when the distances we travel is short.
Lorries travel longer distances than most people in their car. Most people in their car go from their home to work and back, and to the store and back. What kinda distance is that?
Does it really help to travel at max speed for to get from a to b if b is only 5 kilometers away from you>?
    You win what? 3 seconds?
And the same for lorries: if the distance is 300 kilometers, and the lorry in front of you can only go 83 kilometer an hour..... but yours can go 84 kilometers an hour.....Those who overtake with such a small difference in top speed are lunatics.

i totally forgot what this video was about....
Anyway, my opinion on speed limiters: if it will make all the car traffic travel at the same speed or just 1 kilometer per hour faster than the lorries, it will be great.
Especially if people learn how to keep open a gap in between them and the one in front.
      Why would this be great?
If all traffic on the motor way is traveling at roughly the same speed, it is like a train.
And if people keep their distance, others can merge onto or off the main high way/motor way.
It is thanks to these individuals who think they own the road that people get stuck in traffic jams.
These individuals who go from left to right, the left lane, the right lane, the middle lane. Where ever they see a gap in a traffic jam, they will put their car into the gap.
      And then they brake.
And then they make sure the entire lane is stopped again.

Id much rather have it similar to cruise control where I can choose to activate it and have it deactivate whenever I use the brake or accelerator. Either I'm in control of my car or I'm not.
