I screamed in real life. Love the Phantom with all my heart would’ve been one of the best Ace Attorney villains if only they didn’t fumble him in the ending. He could’ve been so good.

If you mean about phantom having fear, I saw it difficult having a good breakdown without emotion. So I think that’s why they snuck fear there.

@@tobysceptiman7058 it’s not really just the fear that’s the issue, it’s the fact that the finale is so underwhelming once he comes out. He has the philosophy of a kids’ villain (in-keeping with the rest of DD being comically poorly written) and I just can’t find the whole “grr there is no trust or justice in this world” schtick interesting no matter how hard I try. And it never explains all his mistakes either! Like- why give Phoenix a picture of the remains of the courthouse bombing when he had no reason to do so and it actively ended up doing him in? Why forge the lighter to frame Athena when Starbuck’s conviction would’ve been good for him? How did he somehow misfire so badly he hit THE OXYGEN TANK LYING ON THE FLOOR when he was aiming for the doorway? It just makes no sense and when the breakdown played I was confusedly waiting for something to be revealed to make the 200 plot holes of DD make any sense. And then he just gets shot because everyone in the trial forgets THE ASSASSINS THEY MENTIONED FIVE MINUTES AGO. He felt like an afterthought and the “my true face” thing was forced as hell.
I will always stand by my position that the Dual Destinies Alternate Ending fancomic is the true canon ending - it continues from the moment before his breakdown and rewrites his character better than Yamazaki ever could.

@@UkyoTatsuya you’re forgetting he literally planned to kill Starbuck with his sabotage during the HAT-1 Mission. The Phantom has no real interest in keeping Starbuck alive.
This leaves the only possible reason he saved Starbuck, of course, to be a convoluted plot to get Athena on trial so that the murder of Metis Cykes might be relitigated, ending with Athena arrested for the killing and Simon freed because the Phantom’s true motive all along was to save Simon Blackquill because they are gay. I’ve cracked AA5
