She really could have chose any other wordings besides calling them “rivals” but she did and now it looks like that thing in shounen battle manga where the rival and main character are so close and influence each other so much they basically have a relationship over the main character and the designated love interest. Luckily, Phoenix has no designated love interest and the person “closest to him romantically” never loved him and sent a double to do the dirty work.

This is actually exactly why I love watching play throughs of games I’ve already played. Seeing how other people interpret dialogue and character interaction from a different perspective can give you such a deeper understanding of the plot. To be honest before I played the game I saw a lot of wright x edgeworth ship fanart but so often, people will ship characters who have basically no chemistry or interactions in canon, relying on the almost nonexistent subcontext between them , so I was completely stunned when I played it and saw how absolutely not subtle the romance undertones were. i thought everyone was making it up or at the least, REALLY exaggerating it… but NO the game itself really is just gay as hell
