What a performance. Just a woman with an incredible voice, an electric guitar facing such a crowd. It's raw, enthralling and brillant. Few artists are capable of such a performance live.
There's such building tension in this song, I always expect drums to come in at any moment and it never happens. It's AWESOME!! The human experience. The exchange and expression of emotion.
PJ Harvey's talent is truly out of this world, and nothing showcases that better than this performance of Rid of Me. I was so lucky to discover her in the 90s.
I didn’t damn it! But so odd bc I remember at least 3 ppl then telling me I’d love her! I am a huge Shirley Manson fan from Garbage, but I found PJ wayyyy late. Although there’s new live performances she’s fine too. I now have all her albums on vinyl and wow!!!
and at the end she drops the gloves, pulls the plug, lets go of the cord. Just her, a skimpy little dress, a pair of heels and her voice. Performing courage.
She is one in a million. When you come upon an artist like PJ Harvey it makes you set the bar so high for everything else you listen to and for me its been tough to find anything that rises to her level.
I'm as captivated and spellbound by Polly Jean as the day i first heard this song nearly 30years ago! Was captivated and spellbound all over again... PJ finishes, leaves stage and then we all snap out of our trances and realise (again) that that was one wee gurl with one guitar, alone with the whole of humanity (debauched, inglorious humanity) in the palm of her hand. Just an absolute phenomenon!
I saw PJ at this festival. I was up close to the stage. It was an overcast day, and PJ came out. During the show, the clouds parted, and the sun joined her. The metallic threads woven in PJ's red dress shone brilliantly in the light. Then Mick Harvey came out and joined the show. It was unforgettable.
I love this live version of Rid of Me. It's how you want the song to sound! On the album it is too subdued and subtle. This is defo the best version I have heard!
They were going for the surprise factor, but unfortunately that only works for one listen 😂😂. A dude on youtube did a decent job of remastering the entire album: ua-cam.com/video/36G15OR6jvY/v-deo.html
PJ Harvey, this is the scariest song I ever heard, complete menace, wrapped is such seduction. The first time I heard this song when the album came out, I was friggin blown away. The original had great drums and bass, massive energy, raw production, blistering. But I love that she does this solo and carries it off, find me another female with the presence, the power and the spine tingling energy of PJ Harvey!!, no chance, she is seriously captivating, and doesn't rely on studio tricks to rip into you. 😎 I will listen to PJ on and on.
I so do agree. This is pure rock'n'roll. A woman, a dress, high heels, a guitar, 4 chords, a screaming crowd. That's it. She's a role model for all of us female artists.
@@sdm1568 Right on. I hope, say, Simone Simons from Epica or Jill from Unlucky Morpheus would have the good taste to laugh at the feeble level of musicianship on display here.
Since PJ Harvey seems to be using flat sandals, you can even take high heels off from that equation. Amazing ! The definition of her as pure rock'n'roll is perfect.
Had a crush on her for 25 years. Criminally underrated as a rhythm guitarist. On stage she just has that "it", whatever it is, that connects and holds you spellbound. She comes across with so much more than just the sum of her talents, kind of like a Janis Joplin or Johnny Cash performance.
She’d been the darling of the uk music press for some time when this came out, there was no internet, no dab radio stations, no way to listen unless you took in late night alternative radio shows. You had to do the leg work to buy it. I came into possession of a promo copy of 50ftqueenie, I wouldn’t say I’d heard much of her stuff, but read pieces on her, however at a time in my life when I was at what was to become many low points, Rid of Me was such a breath of fresh air to my ears. There was a seismic shift in my music buying, and 27 odd years later I’m still here, still struggling and I’ve just brought a new vinyl copy of them album, still sounds as raw as it did when I first heard, and like history repeating itself it’s picked me up, giving me drive and purpose, filling me up & searching for music old and new. Thank you Polly Harvey for being there, never comprised and for always being you.
Hang on there Adrian, I’m in my 50’S and I’m still struggling but weirdly I’m beginning to understand and accept all the low points and don’t know if I’d change them if I could. God I love 90’s indie music still.
This is by far, and has been for years, my favourite UA-cam video of all time. The closing seconds of her performance give me chills every time I watch it... and I've watched this a lot. Incredible artist, incredible song, incredible performance. x
why do you think, there was a backing track? the video is a bit offset to the audio, so it looks a bit strange, but that is a camera (or upload) issue.
Totally disagree. Who ever filmed this, had no clue. Why do they film the audience at all. So fuckin' annoying. The focus needs to be totally on her, not pictures of the audience. So distracting.
+Gareth Douglas, before you neg-compliment her, educate yourself. Watch more of her live performances. And listen to 4 track demos. She doesn't need no backing track except her own self.
A gutsy performance from Polly. Extremely talented, extremely beautiful and extremely awesome. Just about the purest, most non-conformist female artist around today who continues to push the boundaries.
She is underrated coming out in the 90's when she did with all he Big performers and Bands that came out around that time I think she got hidden by some of the more popular acts of the time but looking back no you can see her talent and she is a true artist and it holds up
It took me a few minutes to notice that she is performing solo! She sounds like she's got a bangin rhythm section playing along behind her, Good god almighty, this woman rocks!
gruntoblumpharglegargle Yes indeed! Your comment reminded me of the first time I saw Ani Difranco, 1993 I think. A small woman with just an acoustic guitar and drummer and blew away nearly any five piece band on earth.
don't know that much about her and never been a particular fan og the girl, but this performance is something else: She's alone on a stage in front of thousands of people, playing an electric guitar with no backing, her voice is … wow … especially when she sings the chorus in that crazy, sexy high-pitched wail, she falters not and the performance is flawless of a powerfully written song. To carry that off takes a megaload of talent.

There's no words for this type of talent.
Once in a lifetime one is born to leave us speechless.
