  • I have loved my Valve Index, but have also ran into some issues after the 5 months and nearly 1000 hours I have logged in the headset. Some are of course, my fault, some are the fault of hardware failures. Here are just a few things I have found out about it that will help you enjoy your own Index for a long, long time.

    A lot of my hours have actually been sleeping while in VRChat, sounds weird, but don't knock it until you try it.
    BTW, this isn't a bash to the Index, I love my Index SO MUCH. This is more just for you guys to know what to watch out for and how my first 5 or so months have gone/ what issues I have ran into.

      I've got an unrelated question. I recently jumped in and bought an Index AND a PSVR. (Got the PSVR v2 for $140 on an auction website. Had everything but the headphones, hell of a deal. Came with Blood & Truth). Anyways I bought Karnage on Steam and I can't seem to turn my character around. I can teleport with no problems. I can walk with no issues. But WTF MAN, I can't get my character to turn, which can be quite important when a creature attacks your back. Have you played this with the Knuckles controller? Have a good workaround other than physically turning around? I'm not looking forward to injuring my cables. Appreciate any info you've got. -OnePhatKatt.

    • @AusJo
      @AusJo 4 роки тому +6

      OnePhatKatt does it allow you to look up and Down? Things like that. If so then your headset might have a Brocken accelerometer (the thing that tells the headset that your moving) try recalibrating your headset if possible and go into settings and look for anything to do with turning or orientation based settings

      @@AusJo It's a brand new Index. I haven't had any other issues. I've seen others Index users complain to the devs about this problem on Steam. Just seeing if anyone found a workaround.

    I can see how much you've used the index just looking at the controllers. The finish comes as matte, but you can see where you've worn the finish down to a blunt shine in the palm area. I have a similar thing starting to happen to my Oddysey+ controllers, and have several old controllers from my old consoles with the same blunt worn shine. Just goes to show you actually have the hands-on experience to back what you say and only proves moreso than before that you're one of the best VRTubers, as you talk about stuff you have obvious experience with. Not trying to discredit other great VRTubers like VROasis or Tyriel Wood, just noting that you are easily on par with them in terms of quality, professionalism, and honesty. So will I be shit out of luck because I only crossed 200 hrs of controller use after a year and the drift issue shows up for eg? ... seems quite possible. And 'good guy valve' is probably not going to take care of you after a year.

  • @petercasburn637

    I'm not sure if this would work, but it's worth mentioning in regards to cleaning the facial interface gasket. The reason you get odours from items that have had sweat on them is not from the sweat itself, but from bacteria metabolizing the sweat, producing the odour. The bacteria that do this cannot survive in extreme conditions. I bag up my work boots every now and again (usually when they start to smell like they could walk off on their own) and then put them in the freezer. I would say you would need to bag it up really well (or use a container big enough that is air tight) as freezers have a lot of moist air circulating around. Once you pull it out and leave it to dry, it should be odour free. Great video by the way ThrillSeeker, highly informative, top content.

I like that you are reflecting on what seems like normal behavior with vr and then pointing out how well the device stood up over just a short period of time. It seems to me that for such a high priced item there were engineering decisions at valve to keep the cost down. Exactly why I use a sweatband when I play. I got genes from my dad that make me sweat A LOT more than usual so a sweatband is almost necessary. My Rift S usually stays pretty clean and I don’t know what they put on them but the lenses are spotless. As opposed to the PSVR I used for over a year and probably had ~600-800 hours on it was crazy as that thing got scratches (albeit hard to notice ones) and took FOREVER to clean even after a less than 30 minute session with no sweating. So yeah, if you have issues with sweating, cut off a sleeve of a shirt and bam you got a sweatband.

Both ends of the cord on the thing are going bad too, so if I tug too hard everything freezes in place and if it stays like that for about 3 seconds, the headset restarts. some types of foam can get damaged if pressed while soaked with water - Talking about really dense, shape-keeping foams. The water pressure (while u squeze it out) can break the foam structure making more openings than it had, and result in changing foam reaction time (wont be as slow as it was/ wont keep shapes for so long)

    First off, thanks for all your information. it is Oct 2022, I just purchased the Valve Index so watching allot of various you tube videos on do's and don'ts.
    Well, things wear out over time and the hand controllers mechanics are destined to fail.
    Yeah I would just remove the VR ear pieces and use headphones or the speakers from my large screen LCD TV- that is if i could not get a replacement or the VR headset is defuncted audio wise.
    Thanks, i will look at the cabling and how to better support and protect any weak spots.
    i have been using my Rift S for quite a while and wanted to get a Valve poduct that provide the base stations and possibly use future headsets like the Pimax
    Thanks again and take care. Every little bit of info helps.

  • @jeffg6924
    @jeffg6924 4 роки тому

    On my Rift, this cable clip broke. Instead of replacing it with a single zip tie, use a chain of 2 of 3 to create a chain. This creates a spring effect. If you only use one, you create a pinch point on the cable that will eventually cause fatigue on the cable and will lead to a break over time. The chain technique worked great with no kink in the cable with heavy use over a year.

    My right audio is also starting to show issues. It doesn't fully cut off, but the best way to explain what happens is: when you're on a plane and your ear goes weird do to altitude/pressure. That and the bass gets quite distorted. I think I have pinpointed the issue to the cable itself. I don't believe I have caused the cable any "trauma" that would make it do this after 3 months or so, but moving the cable around closest to the connection point on the headset (the bend between the clip and the connection) seems to fix/unfix it. Worried it will get to the point where it won't fix again.
