So instead of getting the HP Reverb G2 (which I pre-ordered then cancelled a few weeks/months after), I am now getting an Index. I'm hyped since it's gonna be my first vr headset ever! :D
So I've had my valve index now for 2 weeks. Thank you for all of the suggestions and tips that you've provided. I did not know about the steam VR beta download. I did not know why my headset kept turning off and I would have to unplug it and replug it in, but now I know it's all about usb power management. So thank you. Can you make a recommendation as to the resolution? Should I use a custom resolution in the steamvr settings? I've got a pretty beefy PC, i7 7700 k, 32GB of RAM, RTX 2070 super video card. Or should I just leave the resolution as it's set up automatically? I'm just wondering because things don't seem as clear as they should perhaps when I look through the headset. Also, if I go through revive and play my Oculus titles, should I adjust any supersampling in the Oculus titles? Or should I leave those alone? Appreciate any feedback you can give.

I tried my friends Vive with index controllers and it made the regret of buying a quest a bit stronger. Don’t give me wrong the quest has some great games and portability is cool. Something I missed was being able to play with friends and having access to all games. Having tried the index controllers it’s hard to go back. They’re really a big step forwards. I’m planning to sell my quest and buy a used Vive and pick up a pair of index controllers. I’ll still be able to play my quest games since they’re available on pc with cross-play and I can use revive. The controllers are the most important part of the index and I’ll start in that end. I hope I’m making the right decision!
Great video and quite informative! Cheers! I have just now received my Index and have only moments ago opened the box!! The process was so intimidating at first but your instructions are going to be extremely valuable. Kudos and thank you! Thankfully Stonehaven is only 16C at the moment! Perfect weather for gaming!!
I was going to get the Index but have been put off by reviewers reports of god rays, glare and the overheating of the headset. I've also heard the controllers don't have very good quality joysticks. If I'm paying £920 I don't expect any drawbacks like this. I want value for money and now the Rift S has got its tracking and white static issues fixed I'm thinking the Rift S is a more sensible buy.
@@701Builder I've heard from another reviewer that it's a cable fault causing the intermittent white static flash. Raise a ticket with Oculus and they should send out a new one for you.
That is why I did not buy the Vive Pro. But the Index is cheaper than the Vive Pro launch and is now like the Vive launch price except, to me anyways, the Index is better built. If you are looking for perfection you will never achieve it. But I believe the Index is pushing VR into more comfort in hardware and software. The wands help you manipulate objects like IRL (games like Cyube and Blade and Sorcery already show this off from Index's Shipped Date) and 144 hz, sharper/clear textures, ect. I am hoping these will help for longer game sessions but time will tell.
I just realized he only has 300k subs!!! I thought he had waaayy more. He deserves more. This guy is basically the most educated person in vr gaming for consumers
Hi Mike! It's been 8 months, have you considered making an update video on the Index? There are plenty of "first impressions"-type videos about the headset, but fewer long-term updates. With yesterday's restock, maybe some people (like me) are interested in an in-depth runthrough of the hardware.
Australian currently in England here. Australia is much hotter in summer but in England right now it is quite warm and they dont have any bloody air con here so it is very hot inside.
I am Brazilian and think you guys will probably get it in your country, while it won’t arrive in my country and feels 4 times more expensive than it is for you
I am buying valve index when (if) they get them to the store again and this video has answered many questions and i really liked the software update tips etc. Really nice work!
It rly pisses me off I'd but an ac unit, "I live in the UK" but it's so fucking expensive for something I would only use for thoes 2 heat waves we get a year.
I just got my Index yesterday and was kinda bummed as to how the glare compares to the original HTC Vive. Either I don't have mine Set Up correctly, or it's a defect, but I get these Halo rings at the sides of my vision in stark contrast areas (example: the VRchat Logo on the green background is enough to make those halos noticeable). Other than this issue, I do agree 100% with you, that it is by far the best VR experience out there. For anyone who's wearing glasses: make sure to turn the lens distance adjustment wheel slowly, to not accidentally crash into the lenses, it happened to me ^^'
@@steelswarm_ haha and how do you think the basestation sees the knuckles? Magic? UltraSonic!? Maybe infrared leds also. But thx for being not the brightest.
@@ny0men controllers like the windows mixed reality use bright white led lights and cameras to track it whether the base stations use infrared that is correct. I have yet to try the oculus quest myself but from what I've seen from the controllers it uses seems to be a mix of both the windows mixed reality headsets using the cameras on the headset and the infrared tracking, however this is not optimal as it does not offer complete tracking like the base stations do as it fails once the controllers leave the cameras view. Due got his and of valve wanting to have exclusivity of the knuckles controllers on their own products or headsets that support the lighthouse tracking these will never work on the quest at least natively only by modding them and you don't need to be smart to understand that this means that optimal performance like the native one will never be reached. This is what I meant, that they are two completely different tracking solutions even if they have some similarities on what type of sensors they use so the next time you want to sound like a condescendent jerk you should be the one thinking twice :)
The only less than optimum thing I'm hearing, besides the price, is that this headset's sweet spot could be better, and the relationship to how it fits & stays on your head.. Can you comment further on this ... thanks! Gary
Visual sweet spot: 95% of the view is clear Eye sweet spot: You really have to properly fit the headset (like millimeters) to get the above, on the bright side you can now take the headset off and put it back on without changing anything, so once dialed in you don't really have any issues with getting it properly positioned. The same is the case with the godrays/glow/glare btw, if you have properly fitted the headset/your eyes are in the sweet spot, you get bscly none, only barely visible at the very edges if you really start looking for it in dark scenes, any normally lit scene you dont see it.
MRTV basically said Great Product and one of the best other there, but also said not worth twice as much as Rift S. If pricing was down to $600 it would be the best VR you can get and Best Value as well.
looks awesome! thanks for the great video! my main 2c is that you kind of need a dedicated video game room for VR in order for it to be something you do for the long term. I have an original oculus, and I have it in my home office, but I can't keep it out and hooked up 24/7, so I need to bring it out and hook it up every time I use it. if you can't keep it hooked up, eventually it just becomes easier to play regular games and you play VR games less and less.
ClayJitsu I have a similar problem I have my oculus in my room and I can’t find the right place to put my sensors so I have to use front facing tracking and my play space is really small I wish I had an open room with Ethernet but I don’t
As soon as I found out how good vr was, I immediately started saving for this headset. Hopefully within 4 months I'll be gaming in vr for my very first time. Its like I've been living under a rock for the past few years
been interested in getting a first vr head set for a LONG time. scene the first oculus rift was announced. I have been leaning back and forth and thought about just going for the quest ( even though it did not had steam vr support) but now this is absolutely the headset I need. finger tracking, comfortable, good sound, availability for MULTIPLE games, and a quick download for rift exclusives. This headset is hopefully in my future.
Only with a 5V to 12V step-up converter since USB can only provide 5V. I still wouldn't recommend it though as the lighthouses draw quite some power and a converter has about 70% efficiency. TL;DR:You would need a powerful USB power supply and an adapter
Aerith Heiro Not worth trying. Your pc shouldn't be able to supply enough Amps trough the usb ports. I believe this may be possible with type-c since the lighthouse needs 12V 0.833A but I don't think its worth the cable tinkering, cutting, soldering and connecting. The lighthouses are made to be stand alone in the sense that they only require power. There is no need to connect it back to the pc. However, now that I think about it, you probably want to connect them to a battery bank. Here are your choices: "USB-C devices may optionally provide or consume bus power currents of 1.5 A and 3.0 A at 5 V" (so it has to be boosted to 12V, "converting" some Amps to Volts) Some powerbanks can deliver 2A+ on regular USB but that's again usually at 5v (since most electronic devices run at 5v). They also tend to first give low amounts of power untill the device at the other end is recognised as a "smart device" that is known to be able to take more (example Qi fast chargers). They also might not be giving a stable enough output depending on the one how cheap it is. The safest option in this case is to buy a powerbank that has a wall outlet straight onto it and use it as a normal wall outlet. If you have a choice, I'd sugest to just connect it to you wall. If your room doesn't have power and you don't want to run a cable extention from your kitchen, If you have a light plug on your celing, there are cheap "Bulb Socket Adapters" that can help. Plugging into pc is not a good option. GL, I might have put too much info...
I purchased the Knuckles hour one of the pre-sale; definitely been waiting for them for over two years. The headset, I am very excited for, but will not pull the trigger until it is wireless-ready. Wireless on the Vive has rebuilt my passion for VR in every way imaginable. When I am in the metaverse, I stay there so much longer due to the immersion that follows an untethered headset. Once Valve has that under their belt, I will be an Index owner. As an aside, I received the Knuckles a few days ago, but have been sick and working long hours. My next day off is coming very soon and I can't wait to test them out!
I was in the September wave too, but it'll likely be far sooner than that. If you look at r/valveindex on Reddit, it looks like most of the July 31st wave has already gotten their shipping info and even some of the August people. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but at the rate it's going, I wouldn't be surprised if we got ours between late July to mid August.
I had a reservation for shipping by August 31st, I got an email on the 28th of June to purchase it and now my kit is coming later today! I highly doubt you will have to wait til September :)
Excellent assessment. I think what sells it for me is that you said it would be your, "daily driver." Right now, I am in love with being untethered with my Quest. I've retired my Rifts, totally. Yes, I think I will save up for the Valve index.
Just got my Valve Index, super excited to use it! :D One of my favourite aspects are the controllers, they're such an awesome step forward and I really like the fact that you can let go of them yet still have them in your palm! Such a sleek looking and comfortable headset as well! Upgrading from an original HTC Vive, so worth the price I feel.
@@Louis__MelvilleIt's really awesome! Coming from the original Vive, I find it significantly more comfortable and less front heavy, similarly the controllers are much lighter and both the controllers and their hand straps are comfortable to wear, and it's really great being able to let go of the controllers while still having them in my hand! Additionally, the material for the face gasket feels really nice, and I like the non-contact earphones. As I haven't had the opportunity to turn it on yet, I can't yet give any first impressions for the visuals and audio itself, but these are my impressions of the comfort level after having worn it a few times to test it out :) also, there is absolutely no light leak!
I'm waiting on mine to get here. I can't wait! Friend of mine has the kit. Blew my mind. It was incredible! So I had to order one ! Great video. Thanks.
I have never experienced VR. Today I ordered the Valve Index, and it will ship sometime around Christmas. I'm not sure what to expect, but hopefully I will like it. I'm looking forward to playing Elite Dangerous in VR.
Mainly want a VR headset for virtual cinema. Heard the screen dooor effect is reduced in this headset due to the LCD panels and therefore it is better for this purpose. Any thruth to this? Would you recommend the Index for this purpose over other headsets?
If you just want a home theater and no games go for either the Oculus go (200 dollars and requires no pc only phone) or Oculus Quest (400 can play games like super hot and job simulator and also only requires a phone.) Yes the valve index will beat them in movie quality and etc but isn't worth 1000 dollars for just movies.
@@jacobgrassmyer4673 I understand your reasoning, however I already have a capable PC. Another thing that drew me to either this or the Vive Pro is that I had heard the screen-door effect was reduced in both of these units, making use as virtual cinema a lot more viable in terms of quality.
@@TekMerc even if you already have a good pc the extra 400 rift s to 1000 for the index ain't worth it. They have almost the same movie quality and a 600 price difference. Now assuming since you are so set on the index price must not be a problem. In which case definitely go with the index. It's specs are better than almost every VR headset with I think the primax and htc pro right behind. If you have good amounts of money certainly go with the index. The Change is small but definitely noticeable and better.
I'm not going to buy it because 1. Valve ruined my childhood and destroyed my dreams leaving me forever empty inside because they never made half life 3

So instead of getting the HP Reverb G2 (which I pre-ordered then cancelled a few weeks/months after), I am now getting an Index. I'm hyped since it's gonna be my first vr headset ever! :D
My order on steam just went through, expecting to get mine in a week!!!
I can just dream about playing vr since i cant afford it but videos like this makes me able to see a little bit more about ghis world :')
Appreciate any feedback you can give.
ordered mine sunday and would you believe its out for delivery TODAY wednesday, 3 days, I can't believe it going to be here so quick, I'm an old guy and I feel like all my Birthdays have come at once!
I've watched this video at least 4 times, I cant wait for my index, it says 5-7 weeks instead of 7-9, so i'm EXTREMELY excited!
Me : oh finally I got a vive!

Valve: I'm about to ruin this man's entire wallet.

The Rift S is a great headset for the price. It offers very good value for money []-)
I have to agree. Seems i'll keep using my CV1 while i wait for something better. I play 8-18 hours so heat would be a big issue
White static issues better but not yet fixed
I wish i have enough money for this, rent is abit expensive ;-;

Even if you did, you wouldnt be able to get it right now anyway.

If you were using 144Hz refresh rate the whole time, that's one factor affecting the temperature, especially since it's an overclock.
Hi Mike! It's been 8 months, have you considered making an update video on the Index? There are plenty of "first impressions"-type videos about the headset, but fewer long-term updates. With yesterday's restock, maybe some people (like me) are interested in an in-depth runthrough of the hardware.
Crazy now we have quest 3 with future tech at half the price
some people still buy this headset instead of the quest 3, if money wasn’t too much of an issue i would buy the bigscreen beyond instead

POV: You're watching this but you don't have an index but are preparing for if you ever get one.
Getting one for my birthday.
Great. Now I want to see Valve's take on portable VR.
I thought the Quest was better, but I was wrong.
For anyone who's wearing glasses: make sure to turn the lens distance adjustment wheel slowly, to not accidentally crash into the lenses, it happened to me ^^'
Are the knuckles controllers available separately? And if so, has anyone found a way to connect it to the Quest?
Yes and no []-)
Yes and Yes but dont go there, waste of money.
Aww man, well thanks guys!
What game is that FPS shooter game at 5:30??
Virtual Reality Oasis’s entire channel:
Me: Weird flex but ok...
I was thinking about purchasing one of these in the future and this video really helped with decision making.
The only less than optimum thing I'm hearing, besides the price, is that this headset's sweet spot could be better, and the relationship to how it fits & stays on your head.. Can you comment further on this ... thanks! Gary
Visual sweet spot: 95% of the view is clear
Eye sweet spot: You really have to properly fit the headset (like millimeters) to get the above, on the bright side you can now take the headset off and put it back on without changing anything, so once dialed in you don't really have any issues with getting it properly positioned.
The same is the case with the godrays/glow/glare btw, if you have properly fitted the headset/your eyes are in the sweet spot, you get bscly none, only barely visible at the very edges if you really start looking for it in dark scenes, any normally lit scene you dont see it.
I love how every time you play beat saber, you're noticeably better than the previous times
Einar Johnsen I just smashed the tutorial for the third time.
MRTV basically said Great Product and one of the best other there, but also said not worth twice as much as Rift S. If pricing was down to $600 it would be the best VR you can get and Best Value as well.
I said the same thing at the end []-)
I totally agree
I'm watching this for the second time because I can't afford a valve index but really want it
looks awesome! thanks for the great video!
my main 2c is that you kind of need a dedicated video game room for VR in order for it to be something you do for the long term.
Its like I've been living under a rock for the past few years
When you show games on videos like this can you put in the title I the game
been interested in getting a first vr head set for a LONG time. scene the first oculus rift was announced.
Is it possible to power new Lighthouse trackers 2.0 through USB?
Aerith Heiro I don’t believe so but google is a great resource
Here are your choices:
"USB-C devices may optionally provide or consume bus power currents of 1.5 A and 3.0 A at 5 V" (so it has to be boosted to 12V, "converting" some Amps to Volts)
Some powerbanks can deliver 2A+ on regular USB but that's again usually at 5v (since most electronic devices run at 5v).

Do you know what game he is playing at 7:00?
Cool. I'm in the Sept queue for one. I was wishy washy for too long. :( I can't wait.

How is it so far? looking to get one soon!

Cool video matey, I like the whole idea of the Valve Index but for the time being I think I'm going to sit on the fence and get splinters ;)
