  • This video is about the all-new Olympus FL-700R flash. I go through some of the new features especially in comparison to the current units from Godox that I've been using (v860IIO). This is the first flash from Olympus that has a true radio-based wireless triggering system.

    Joe - revisiting your video. I've had the FL-700WRs for a while now along with the FC-WR commander. I really love this setup - I was hoping that you might provide a more in-depth review of these devices, now that they have been around for a while. I'd love to learn more from you on this topic. I hope you and your family are doing well during this difficult time.

    Thanks for the info Joe! Per your recommendation I bought a Godox 860 and love it, especially the lithium ion battery. I wish Olympus had found a way to power the New flash with the same batteries that power the EM1-II and the EM1X.

      Yes i AGREE That would be the Ultimate, however since they dont i would avoid that unknown pack they did go with & just use either or both Lithium AA Or Nickle Metal AA Thus giving You X2 Options Alkaline & Rechargeable AA Because those packs not only are to expensive but will eventually render the flash useless when they start getting hard to find the prices will Sky rocket to the Moon..but with AA Or AAA Those will always be available :-)

    I use Godox/Flashpoint gear and you nailed the problem with the small flash -- it's a hefty guy. A hard fit in modifiers. Glad that Olympus has come out with a more compact wireless (as opposed to optical) system, but Godox/Flashpoint has a whole line of flashes with various power levels. Agree the Godox/Flashpoint trigger should be smaller. Anyway, nice and informative video which hopefully people interested in the products will pay attention to. Nice job.

I do have a question for you though - how do you configure the flash to use front curtain (slow1) - My flash menu shows rear curtain (slow2) but not slow1 - is there something in menu system that I have configured incorrectly?

    Nice review. I love that the new flashes are weather sealed. I stopped using Olympus flashes with the fl600r’s because I found them unreliable. They would inconsistently fail. So I moved to Nissin and now use the i60a’s with air trigger and they’re great. More compact than Godox and great support services. Do you know yet if the new Olympus versions are more reliable than the older flashes?

    My biggest complaint about Godox is I haven't been able to figure out how to do exposure bracketing with the trigger (the hotshot flash is too big to be comfortably on the camera IMO).

    hello Joseph I've followed many of your videos and enjoyed/learned from your content before you became an official Olympus "ambassador" few months ago. You now appear to favour/lean to the Olympus kit despite its excessive cost/performance issues. In your previous videos you were very excited about the Godox system which many of your subscribers (including me purchased) However now despite the Olympus flash being inferior in most of the specs you are still keen recommend it to your subscribers.

      Well I think I was fair in saying up until now the biggest downside of Godox was no AF assist and the biggest downside of Olympus was no radio. This is the first flash that has both and even then tried to give the trade offs in terms of price etc. I still think the Godox is amazing but if you really want both radio and an AF light this new flash is worth considering. I know OEM gear is often more expensive but at least we have options right?

    Thanks for your post, one point you make however is I believe not correct, and that is you cannot turn off the auto focus assist light on the X proO. There is a switch on the side of the unit specifically for turning Auto Focus Light on an off.

    • @skamradt67
      @skamradt67 5 років тому

      but its a switch and not automatic. Would be nice if it was automatic, turn on when focus is being engaged and off for the shutter. Otherwise its fumble with a switch. I can imagine that it would not be very practical in run and gun situations like a reception where timing is everything.

    Does the FC-WR support olympus system flashes that don't have the optical remote control feature such as the old FL-50 (I know the FL-50R works with it)?

  • @Impostertot
    @Impostertot 5 років тому

    Thanks, Joe, for the honest review of the new system.
    The radio communication and weather sealing are nice additions to the Olympus lineup for sure. However, I am not too keen on the pricing especially when as you shared the available Godox system. I have units from both systems but to spend $230 for a receiver it’s a bit much.
    So my question of the day to you is: does the Xpro-O TTL Wireless trigger work with the new FL-700WR? I tried to find information on the new flash unit to see what the built in wireless was and could not find anything in the specs or press releases. The Godox uses 2.4G wireless system.
    Can you test and let us know please? Thanks.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  5 років тому +1

      It does not, kinda wish Olympus would make an open standard or adopt the Godox protocol but that’s probably a pipe dream. What does appear to work is putting a v860IIO on the Oly foot converter, but I can’t think of many reasons to do that.

    Hi Joseph. I will be testing the M1 III next week and was studying flashes in case I do buy Olympus. Currently have one Phottix and 3 Nikon flashes.
    I can't tell by GetOlympus or youtube if there is a radio controlled flash. I saw optical. I guess I'm sure Godox has radio flashes for Olympus. Haven't gotten into Godox.
    Any help you can give me on compatible flash brands and 'pro' size Olympus ones? thanks.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  3 роки тому

      It's a bit confusing since there are models with 'R' in the name that only use optical triggering but there is one unit the Olympus FL700WR which is a true radio control flash and it is currently the top of the range for OMD. The FL-700WR is a 4 AA style flash so it's performance is quite good. It's also weather sealed and it's the only OMD flash on the market that offers an AF assist light.
      Other top flashes are from Godox and Profoto. I personally use the Godox line since I have Godox AD200s that I use for event work and I want to use my on camera units to trigger off camera flashes. My main on camera flash is still the Godox v860IIO but I may upgrade to the round headed Godox V1 in the future.
      I hope that helps.

    Great 1st look. When I moved to Olympus from Nikon I purchased the appropriate Olympus Godox flash the same as I had used with my Nikons, however the issue I had with the Godox 860ii was the head was to stiff when turning for bounce flash. It was probably just my copy of the flash, but it caused the hotshot to become loose on both of my EM1 mkii. Happily Olympus were excellent and fixed the hotshoe under warrant! So I purchased a pair of Olympus fl-900 and have had no more issues with the hotshoe. I keep the Godox system I also have the AD200 for when I need off camera flash. I wonder if we will see the radio control for the Olympus system built in to future cameras? Thanks again for an excellent video.

    Joe I wonder if you could offer any advice please, I watched your video and then promptly bought the Godox X1T (O) and the Godox TT350 (O). I have the EM1X - switched on and set to fill in flash. The X1 is on the hot shoe correctly connected with good batteries. The screen on the X1 indicates Group A TTL and CH 1, the TT 350 (O) indicates (A) TTL, the antenna, S CH 1 are shown, zoom is Auto but I have tried manual settings too. All batteries in both appliances are fresh. When I fire the camera shutter the flash does not fire. When I depress the test button on the X1 the red light illuminates but the flash gun does not fire. If I replace the X1 with the flash gun it fires and good exposure is obtained. So why can't the transmitter recognise and fire the flash gun - what have I done wrong? Any advice would be very welcome.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  4 роки тому

      OK so here's what I gather so far... 1. If you put the flash on the camera, it fires no problem (so it can't be the camera settings) 2. Both the flash and the transmitter are on the same channel and group.
      On the XProO you see the channel you want to use at the top and you've got a Group Activated and set for say 1/16 power.
      On the TT350O you see that it's set to wireless, 'S' for slave, the correct channel and it's displaying the Group you are trying to use. If you hit the test button on the X1ProO you get a red light (not green) and you get no flash.
      OK, so if things are linked up you should be seeing a green light when you hit the test button so I think we're stuck at that part of the problem.
      (One long shot) Sometimes for unknown reasons, if I power on transmitter and flash on in the wrong order they won't see one another and I'll have to cycle the flashes on/off button or cyle on/off the wireless.
      I assume you've tried changing both the channel and group? I tend to use Channel 8 and groups B/C as my remote flashes and I reserve Group A for my on-camera flash (for events I'll have a on-camera flash as master)
      Also just to be 100% both the flash and the transmitter have the 'O' printed on them after the model name? (Just making sure there wasn't a shipping mistake)

      @@JosephEllisPhotographer Thanks for the reply Jo, both units are (O), I did try switching on in different orders. I didn't change all the channels I set both to Group A and 1. Your reply seems to indicate these non Olympus guns can be temperamental, I have decided to return the gun and transmitter, I think I will buy the Olympus gun probably the 700. I am not the most patient person in the world I want reliability, and simplicity.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer

      @@jonathanashton4758 Sorry I can't be of more help. I have found the Godox lights to be quite reliable over the many events I've used them but I can understand your frustration. The FL700WR is definitely the most full featured flash you can buy for your EM1X and I do find them to be a wonderful balance of size and power with our M4/3 cameras. If you don't plan on expanding into larger lights like the Godox AD400/AD200 I think it's probably the best choice you can make.

  • @ericseale793

    Do you know if the FL-700WR can directly trigger existing (older) Olympus flashes via their pre-flash optical remote system? I suspect the answer is "no," since Oly would like us to all move to RF -- but a mixed system (FL-700WR on my camera, FL-600R remotely) could come in handy until I can afford to swap out my existing flashes.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
