Robin, FANTASTIC!!! Agree with you 100+1% It is brilliant things from Olympus. When I saw it for first time, when I opened box, I was surprised. Why? What is it? In few minutes I realized how excellent this tiny thing. I do not use flash a lot, I very very rare used built-in flash on other cameras (even if it had it). So lack of flash on Olympus body was good for me at the same time, having few extra grams in my bag with ability to bounce it from celling, use it as commander for big brothers and carry NO extra battery is blessing. Rotating, Tilting, Fully controllable and 50 grams! Thanks a lot for video!
FYI for anyone who had the same panic I did that either the hotshoe or the flash was broken: the flash will NOT work in any Silent mode. If you move to Auto or go to a different mode, then it's golden.
One more thing I'd add Robin (at least for the EM5 MKII) and that is that the flash will not operate if you have selected the electronic shutter. You must select the mechanical shutter for the flash options to be available.
Excellent video. It's a great little flash and you can move it off camera with a cord made by JJC. I have made a bracket that allows it to sit on the lens hood of the Oly 60mm macro so that you can use it for 1:1 macro (or greater with rings, teleconverter, accessory lens). A guy on DPReview pointed out that the little plastic butter containers that you get in restaurants are a push fit and make a good diffuser! It was genius for Oly to put a 4th power contact on the hotshoe enabling the unit to be so tiny. My whole macro flash setup lens, flash and diffuser now weighs half what it used to!
Im totally agree with you on this John..he is such a talented photo educator..btw, the reason i just ordered OMD EM10 Mark iii is because i watched Robin's video about Olympus camera..talked to the seller just now as soon as i placed the order and they said will only ship out the camera tomorrow..oh,im really excited to have my first camera🙈
it is totally true. when I got my Pen F, I put this tiny think in my desk... but now I tested it and in a pinch to just get a little bit more light in a face - perfect
When I purchased my first Olympus body I had no idea this was included. When I opened the box I was do delighted! It's so damn cute, and works awesomely.
It is nice alternative. I would like to see similar flash for Pentax as they removed pop-up flash from all recent hi-end bodies, which I consider to be very stupid idea. I have multiple flashes, but not always I carry some of them. I even got very small METZ MB26 which operates with 2xAAA batteries. But when I recently added EM5III, I got it with this little flash which can do a lot. Current cameras have quite usable higher sensitivity levels, so even a small flash like this can help a lot. Powering it from camera is great as I do not have to take care about batteries. The only sad part is, that it does not work with my other Olympus cameras like XZ-1, XZ-2, Stylus1s, EPL-6..
I just dug up that little flash and tried it for the first time because of your video! This little thing is amazing! I wish they kept it for the Mark3. Thank you for this video!
Tried to get Mr Trek to look at it but he wasn't interested in it. Your the 1st person to show how it works. It felt quite substantial and thought this isn't no cheapie. Couldn't work out how to get the thing to flash though and will try your instructions one day.
I replaced my OMD EM1 with the latest EM1 Mark III and thus had no idea that the Mark II included this tiny flash. Your video convinced me to purchase one.
I was out Shooting and did not have my fl600 with me.. then I remember that I had put this little gem in my bag and forgotten about it. It worked great... although I have the 600 with me most of the time now, this gets more use....
This flash does come with its own little pouch, which you can fix on your camera strap. Since the flash is so small and weighs almost nothing, in that way you can have it on you all the time without it disturbing you at all.
Hello from Indiana, USA! I prefer an external flash (such as the Godox 350 or larger for two reasons. 1) more flash power 2) the LM3 uses the camera battery for flash power, meaning that battery will need to be charged/replaced sooner. If I know I am taking a number of flash photos, I'd prefer the larger flash. I do agree that it is a nice little flash that takes little space to carry, and it has come in handy a few times. Unlike so many built-in flashes, this one can turn for bounce - as you indicated. Didn't know it was also waterproof.
If you need to do a lot of flash, an external flash makes more sense. But the tiny flash is a solid backup, and can be useful in many situations (travel, or casual environment)
Hi Robin. Thanks for this video about this little flash. There is no manual or information about this. You described it and provided all kinds of great information about it. Appreciate it.
I totally agree! I use it quite often when I don't need massive power, especially indoors, I live in the NL and virtually every home has a white ceiling, so in most cases this is all you would need for general photography. Obviously I bring more gear for a portrait shoot, but this one is always in my basic day bag for always carrying around. The best flash is the one you are carrying :)
This flash, in its tiny pouch, fits inside the lens hood of my PL 25mm. Since I have room for the hood in my bag, I have room for a whole flash as well.
I shoot a lot of indoor sports with my E-M5ii, namely roller derby. Most of the venues have enough light, barely, that I can get shutter speeds of at least 1/160-1/250 without a flash and without pushing ISO like crazy, mostly because I use fast primes. After a season of shooting roller derby like this I tried using this little flash, as it came with my camera, and I found myself at a venue which was simply too dark, but thankfully it had a low, white drop ceiling to bounce the flash off of. This little flash performed WELL above and beyond what I thought is possible. I have since upgraded to a Godox TTL350O, but still use this little guy when I don't want to deal with the weight and bulk of the Godox. Great little flash! Only shame is that it drains the battery.
Thanks for sharing Robert, your experience with shooting indoor flash was beyond my expectation. I'd recommend a dedicated external flash for that, but you have proven that minimal gear can go a long way.
@@robinwong thanks! I was shocked at the capability of that little flash too, but after shooting one game of roller derby using the little Olympus "baby Yoda" flash, I upgraded to a Godox TT350 which i typically over power by about an extra stop and then bounce it off the ceiling and it took my indoor sports photography, especially portraits, to a whole new level. Would a FF camera be better? Sure, but I can't afford two systems and my little Olympus does EVERYTHING. A true Swiss Army Camera!
@@douglasallen511 I can't say for sure, when I shoot roller derby I usually shoot 2-4 60 minute games (running clock with a halftime) in a row and don't think much about my batteries since I carry 5 with me and that has never not been enough to get me through a day. If I had to guess, I'd say that the battery life loses about a third on my E-M5ii if I use the flash for every shot. Obviously that depends on a lot of factors, namely how much power you're requesting for the flash, but while the added drain on the battery is certainly noticeable, it isn't devastating.
@@robinwong and for what it is worth, even my big $80 Godox flash can't rotate and angle to all the angles that the little Olympus FL-LM3 can. Can't believe they didn't include it with the E-M1 Mark III, it's a MUST HAVE for any Olympus user I think! So versatile!
Thanks for the Live Boost tip, didn't know that one. I've gotten some surprisingly good results with this little guy. I have noticed that my batteries drain pretty quickly when I use it, however.
Well, an onboard flash would drain the batteries almost as quickly, and be a bit less powerful and flexible. At least, that is so with my E-M10 Mk1 body.
Excellent video! I had never even looked at this little guy before, it just sat in the closet. I figured it needed some special tiny batteries. Now I use it all the time.
Got the FL-LM3 the other day for my E-M10 II after having seen this video and your blog post. I have the original FL-50 for my trusted and still perfectly functioning E-1 from 2003, which by the way also works fine with both my E-M10 and E-M10 II. But for many occasions it is too big to carry around unless the situation really calls for it, besides looking and feeling quite disproportional on top of an E-M10. This little guy is indeed amazing in its refined simplicity and the perfect fill-in flash with its swiveling head. I have now tried it for a couple of days and it was love at first sight. Thank you Robin, and greetings from Sweden!
I'd love to see a video that explains setting up the Fl-LM3 as a controller for an off camera flash. You went through it VERY quickly in your macro photography video mention in this video. I understood there was a way to have the FL-LM3 act as a controller but not flash itself. IN the RC menu, it shows the on-camera flash (FL-LM3) "OFF" but it still fires. Thanks for all your great videos and your enthusiasm
I have one of these flashes but, did not know many of the things it could do , now I do. Thank for your video and keep up your great work. Jim, Charlotte, NC. USA.
You capture my thoughts on that flash. I put it back in the box when it came with the Em1 ii as "useless accessory". When we started to appreciate the cam more and more, it took just one thorough look at the flash to realize its strengths. I dub it the best compact flash on the market. Only downside is not being able to put it anywhere else without tinkering... which is sad, because the little extra plastic is a great solution to keep it rock solid on the hot shoe. Wanted to keep it & sell the ii for a iii, so we get one extra to chop "it" off. Since iii doesn't come with it, we keep the ii and buy another LM3... :) Cheers
I totally agree. I wish my Nikon Z camera came with something like this. I use a Metz ring flash for macro, and the FL-LM3 is perfect for triggering it. Since popup flashes have fallen out of favour with manufacturers, they should all be including a little commander flash like this.
Great review. I remember when unboxing my EM1 Mark II I disregarded it because it looked tiny and rather flimsy. But after some time when I decided to give it a try anyway I was pleasantly surprised and nowadays I use this little flash almost every day.
When I changed from Nikon to Olympus with the main reason to reduce my load , I got an E-M10ii with a build in flash. I've never been a big fan of these flashes. But then I saw this mini Flash and manged to get one on Amazon. I'm amazed at just how powerful this thing is ! Basically you control it in exactly the same way as the build-in flash. Not having to make any adjustments on the flash directly is a major plus. And the size and weight !! It's always in the bag, just in case :-)
Excelent video. Small equipment that is really overlooked. I am also quilty on this, but is going to get my flash out of darkness and start using it. Thanks Robin.
Interesting! I never gavel much attention to this small piece in the box of my Pen-F, but now I see a chance to get rid of the larger flash in my photo backpack, which is hardly ever used.
Thanks Robin. Again things I didn’t know. I had the small flash with the original e-m5, and it did not work with the e-m1 II. I didn’t use it much and have used this one even less. That might have to change.
I miss FP setting, filling in the subject/person in portrait and darken the rest can look really nice. But because its water resistant, its still my secondary flash in my bag.
This is a great flash! It's compact as the DMW-FL220 *and* can do bounce! It's compatible with Panasonic cameras, btw, requiring a tiny modification. (a video about this can be found on youtube).
Just ordered one. I recently bought the Oly 12-50mm; primarily for the macro/close focus mode. I was shooting with extension tube; but DOF was too narrow. That lens is a nice lens, but in Macro mode the largest aperture is f6. I need more light; especially if there is a hint of wind outside. I have LED light box, but it is inconvenient. I think this little guy will help a bit. In my experience, using flash versus fixed lighting seems to counter subjects that are moving (bugs moving, leaves shaking). I'll have to rewatch your macro video.
Of course I am giving you a thumbs up, i always enjoy your videos because you always seem so cheerful! 😊😊😊 I am just getting back into photography after a lot of years, and so I bought myself a beautiful instrument called an OM D EM 5 mk ii! Having always had a love of fine optics and elegant precision instruments,.it really couldn't have been anything else At the same time, since I learned my photography on a Zenith E with a scres in 58mm F2 lens, and since mg last camera was a OM2 sp,I must admit to being somewhat frightened by this one! I am totally in awe of what it can do and learning about this little gem is really stretchkng my intelect! I only hope that my creativity is equal to it! So please keep up the postings, thank you! 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Great review Robin I haven’t tried out this little flash yet on my OM-D 5 mkiii. But after watching ur in depth review i am looking forward to trying out all the modes. Many thanks Robin keep safe
Great video. I never use flash because of the harsh light, but the ability to use it as a bounce flash makes it usefull. Perhaps I should take it out of the box to use it anyway. I never would have found it out myself.
Nice product. It sounds like a better alternative for a pop-up flash. And it is smart to combine it with the camera sale. Otherwise, people looking for a flash will go for a more powerful model. Although using it as a trigger is a nice extra.
The more powerful model is also larger, heavier, needs batteries, and not many people do serious flash photography these days. The tiny flash helps in some situations and can make a difference.
I received one with my EM-1 MkII but not with the EM1-X. It is very useful, although when using it the battery power goes down noticeably. Make sure you have spare batteries. And when using with the 12-100mm F4 remember to take the lens hood off or there is a 'partial eclipse of the flash'!
Great video Robin! I love this little flash unit too and use it on my E-M1 Mk2 and Pen F, and it's great news that it's compatible with the new E-M1 Mk3 as I'm tempted to upgrade... more spending is on it's way!!
I have an EM1 mkll. I finally tried the flash watching your video. Several times. I have not been able to fire this flash. When I first got the body 6 months ago I fired it a dozen times. Now nothing / no settings will fire this. What could be the problem. It’s beyond frustrating.
I've been following your 'Macro Bug' photography videos and have one of these little flashguns to use as a trigger for a bigger off camera flashgun (a Neewer NW561) and it all works brilliantly....not many bugs about in the UK these days due to pesticides but I keep looking!.. thanks for producing your videos, far better than an instruction book!.....
This is an awesome little flash. No batteries means it can be tiny, bug unfortunately it'll drain the small battery in the E-M5 Mk III even quicker. Also, you could use S-OVF instead of Live View Boost, right? (I'm still unclear about the differences--that would make a great future video, Robin!)
S-OVF works differently than live view boost. S-OVF boosts dynamic range (lifting shadows especially). However, you also lose the fast refresh rate advantage.
The FL-LM3 I have for the E-M1 m2 has failed. I've ordered a spare, which I used in an underwater housing to fire off-camera strobes via fiber optic cable. Most strobes I've used are pretty durable. I've never suffered a failure like this. I do like its design, size, etc.
thanks to you Robin! for me the small flash is one of "bells and whistles" i really love on my e1 MII. For all reasons you explained here. By the way one of the reasons why i did not change to the MIII. If I give my MII away at eBay, everybody expect that i give all to the camera what is in the kit. Meaning if i change to MIII, I have to purchase the flash again. not that it is too expensive, but I'm am kind of offended. And yes, it is a weird decision from Olympus to take the flash out from the standard bundle.
Robin, FANTASTIC!!! Agree with you 100+1% It is brilliant things from Olympus. When I saw it for first time, when I opened box, I was surprised. Why? What is it? Thank you for sharing this. I bought a used EM5.3 with the flash and was wondering why it was not firing.
Just ordered a hotshoe extension cable for my FL-LM3. Should do everything I need at arms length for portrait or macro.

This is a great flash! It's compact as the DMW-FL220 *and* can do bounce! It's compatible with Panasonic cameras, btw, requiring a tiny modification. (a video about this can be found on youtube).
Can i use it on my lumix s5?
Great and very helpful review and guide, many thanks
Just ordered one. I recently bought the Oly 12-50mm; primarily for the macro/close focus mode. I was shooting with extension tube; but DOF was too narrow. That lens is a nice lens, but in Macro mode the largest aperture is f6. I need more light; especially if there is a hint of wind outside. I have LED light box, but it is inconvenient. I think this little guy will help a bit. In my experience, using flash versus fixed lighting seems to counter subjects that are moving (bugs moving, leaves shaking). I'll have to rewatch your macro video.
Great Robin!!!! I didn't know the majority of this things. Thanks a lot!!
Very inspiring video, thanks.
Thanks Roy!
Great video. Thank you Robin. 📸
You are genious too, thank u very much.
Great video, thanks Robin.
Thanks!
I have 4 of them, this is not a problem for my em1 III I love it and save the shot when I'm indoor for bouncing
Yeap, bounced flash is the way to go
Is flash enough to take pictures in the evening? (in a nightclub). It would be used with the em1 mark III
@@romainprovost7164 not possible sorry... But in a large room with white walls no problem. You can bounce on the wall near you
@@mimstyle Thank you. And for a family party in a fairly large party room (but with soft lighting), would that be okay?
Very helpful Robin - thanks so much. 👍
Would such flash be compatible with let's say a Lumix GX9?
Really useful! Thanks a lot from Belarus!
Thank You!!!!
Of course I am giving you a thumbs up, i always enjoy your videos because you always seem so cheerful! 😊😊😊
I am just getting back into photography after a lot of years, and so I bought myself a beautiful instrument called an OM D EM 5 mk ii!
Having always had a love of fine optics and elegant precision instruments,.it really couldn't have been anything else
At the same time, since I learned my photography on a Zenith E with a scres in 58mm F2 lens, and since mg last camera was a OM2 sp,I must admit to being somewhat frightened by this one!
Go give it a go! You will love it.
Great video. I never use flash because of the harsh light, but the ability to use it as a bounce flash makes it usefull. Perhaps I should take it out of the box to use it anyway. I never would have found it out myself.
Wish l could get a tilt/swivel flash that small for my Nikon DSLRs.
Nice video. Makes me think to buy this one.
Looks like it will work with my EM-10 II, but not my first gen EM-1. Price is right, though. Thanks.
Lots of great info here Robin!!! I never knew my flash was so awesome!!! I'm going to have to go play with it now!!
If you have followed this channel for a while you will realise no hood is used at all.
@@robinwong I agree, but in Scotland a lens hood keeps off the rain as well as sunflare. It doesn't work on midgies though.

Does this thing work with Lumix cameras?
Great job, Robin. Your video content is always informative. Thanks for your insight.
Great. Thanks a lot for this great review. I will buy one tomorrow. Tomorrow i will get my new OM-D 1 iii😊
Great video Robin! I love this little flash unit too and use it on my E-M1 Mk2 and Pen F, and it's great news that it's compatible with the new E-M1 Mk3 as I'm tempted to upgrade... more spending is on it's way!!
Hi is it working with ep7 pen thank you 😊
I have an EM1 mkll. I finally tried the flash watching your video. Several times. I have not been able to fire this flash. When I first got the body 6 months ago I fired it a dozen times. Now nothing / no settings will fire this. What could be the problem. It’s beyond frustrating.
I've been following your 'Macro Bug' photography videos and have one of these little flashguns to use as a trigger for a bigger off camera flashgun (a Neewer NW561) and it all works brilliantly....not many bugs about in the UK these days due to pesticides but I keep looking!.. thanks for producing your videos, far better than an instruction book!.....
cute flash, but here in the Philippines, it's very rare to see people using Olympus here.Nice vid though
Very helpful 👍
Very informative video Robin. I have yet to take it out of the camera box. Just bought a macro lens so it will be useful. Thanks 😊
Go try make a DIY flash reflector/diffuser/bouncer/softbox thingy for the FL-LM3!
Robin Wong I had a quick session with it. Wow! what a versatile little flash. Amazing performance for its size. Thanks again 👍
My flash stopped working in mechanical mode. I get a red flash symbol on the lcd.
Love ur tips 💞
