Agreed! You just never know. You can have all of the money in the world.. but it's only useful until you are in a situation, that money is of little to no use.
the other missed aspect of this device is trading opportunity. this could put some food on the table in certain situations.
I saw a demo of this process at a Russian festival of all places at fort Ross on the NCal coast. I was so fascinated by the process I took quite a few pics of the apparatus the gentleman constructed. I then took thes hm & drew up instructions on how to go about the whole thing. I wanted to add what I learned here for anyone interested in the process. It was a hand crank Vs a power drill. The crank gear had 60 teeth & the 3 individual hooks had 20 teeth - so 3 turns per hand crank rotation. His apparatus allowed any length as does yours. It allows the use of inexpensive twine purchased in bulk & 1 strand of twine can be used by running single triple or 5 strands through ea hk at ea end. IMPORTANT - odd #s only on each hook. After making rope you can strengthen it by wetting it down under tension but it will shrink by about 15%. Need 100 ft? Start with 115. The drying/shrinking is what sets & strengthens the rope Lastly this gentleman explained that after drying it he rubs it down with beeswax either entirely or at a working end for a lasso for example so loops allow smooth passage of rope through itself which also has applications in boating. Anyone interested in making such a thing I have full notes & pics. He also used a 3 holed wooden hand tool which worked as a spreader as the 3 ropes were twisted together which ensured tight even finished product. The whole thing was so cool.

Соглашусь.На рыбацком стане мотали оттуги (сети тянуть,якоря поднимать).Обходились ручной дрелью и гнутыми гвоздями.Два "хвоста" вместе по-часовой,третий добавляли и в обратную сторону.И 5-10 метров-не актуально. 50-70 рабочий вариант. 😉
... можно таким приспособлением плести из пластиковых бутылок, предварительно распустив их на полоски, а затем прогреть строительным феном!!!
Можно поподробнее про правильность? Ролики про изготовление канатов все однотипные, и без пояснений. В одном только сказали, что отдельно каждый хвост нужно крутить по часовой стрелке, а все вместе потом - против. Если, мол, все в одну сторону: и по отдельности и все вместе потом, веревка не получится. Я правильно понял?
Thing is, this can also be used to make straight quite sturdy metal wire, which would cost a lot to transport straight.. And you are only limited by the distance between endpoint and beginning..

Great Job!! But please don't use gloves with the Drill Press and Circular Saw.
A guy I used to work with was recently using a big Bosch hammer drill. He was using a core bit and holding the bit by the shaft while it was rotating. He had gloves on, and his pinky finger got wrapped up in his palm and wrapped around the shaft and pulled his pinky clean off at the hand. He had to fish his pinky out of his glove. He was left with nothing but the first knuckle bone showing.

Aye. Gloves/long sleeves dinae mix well with power tools.
The Steelworks I used to work at, one feller, very experienced in the field, got unlucky while wearing a shirt with his sleeves down, had his shirt catch on the Tube Saw.
Took him several seconds to realize that his hand was on the floor behind him.
His hand was reattached and took a long while to heal, and he can use it mostly now.
Fellow employees gave him a Jamie Lannister Hand as a ‘get well soon” gift.
Degloving is terrifying.

When I was a Cub in Winnipeg back in 1966 we made rope this way. It worked well.
There have been some great replies for this little trick. I was amazed how much people know about the mechanics of rope. This would indeed have a loose lay if the tape were removed but with that said this was a great trick if you had the materials and needed something to get you by. Great video and very interesting.
Fun trivia question: What is the difference between rope and line? Hint: it has nothing to do with length.
Line is when it's on a boat
Line is when it's deployed. If you have it just laying around in a coil or whatever, it's rope. Once it's deployed for a specific purpose it becomes a line.
I have never heard of a fence rope, have you? But you've heard of a fence line.

I would think keep direction of twist in same direction of original cord or twine otherwise things would unravel.
Ever notice wheels spinning "backwards" in a video? When the rpm of an object syncs to the framerate of the camera in a certain way, you get this illusion.

I noticed when he attaches the 2 plywood together that he didn't show how the center piece even makes the 4 4 hooks spin bit in different ways.

How did it turn out? Iʻm sure climbing rope is expensive because it needs to be a certain strength.
J'ai personnellement fait des cordes avec un système similaire datant du début du 20ème siècle. Cordes pour attacher les chevaux, vaches et taureaux... à partir de "cordes à ballots" en sisal. Principale différence, d'un coté il y avait quatre crochets (a manivelles) comme sur la vidéo, et de l'autre un seul. On tournait les quatre manivelles d'un coté, avec une planche à quatre trous pour tourner les quatre ensemble, puis ensuite, de l'autre coté, on tournait la manivelle unique pour que les quatre brins s'entremêlent. Quand on tournait les quatre, un cône en bois positionné du coté de la manivelle unique empêchait les brins de s'enrouler. Quand on tournait ensuite la manivelle unique, on faisait avancer le cone vers l'autre coté, tout en continuant à tourner du coté des quatre. Pas besoin de couper quoi que ce soit, on faisait même une boucle d'un coté en insérant le bout entre les brins plus loin.

Model ships? I've seen sewing thread used for ship models. Wouldn't anything larger be way out of scale?
Doesn't 'real rope' need to have each cord spun counterclockwise while they are wrapping around one another in a clockwise direction? I can't determine if this is happening in this setup. If you take the tape off the end, will it simply fall apart?
And this is great for 4-5’ sections. But when I need 100’, am I going to have to splice 20 sections together?
@@bobcitizen1915 no you just start with longer pieces at the first. You lose something like 75% of length in the twisting phases so if you need 100ft of rope you need 4 pieces of 400ft.

They had augers and loads of ways to generate more power with less input. If you needed a huge drill and a lot of power you could operate a giant drill bit without any human effort by using gears powered by work animals, wind or flowing water, like how grain mills are driven. They also knew how to use levers, pulleys, counterbalances and other still relevant technology very effectively, the best example of the level of engineering from those days are the clocks, being able to make those tiny gears perfectly when everything was hammer and anvil must have been a nightmare, and was the pinnacle of technology of the time. They had time pieces that could accurately track the stars and run on a yearly calendar cycle. Even tho there wasn't even steam engines, traditional engineering methods are surprisingly effective, a favourite example of mine is a gantry crane that uses whats basically a human hamster wheel to lift hundreds of kilos just from one person walking in the wheel. I feel like a bit of a jackass after writing that out cuz you were clearly making a joke and not wanting to discuss and learn more about mechanics of antiquity.
In middle school in the 6th grade for a project for history class we had to make something that was made in the stone ages or midevil ages like the way they would have done it and don't from scratch so I made a 100 foot roll of himp 4 ply rope by hand no power tools just by hand the way they did it and grew the plants my self as well in our horticulture facility using the green houses grow lights and chemicals to help them grow bigger faster and stronger to make the most of amount of rope as possible form the plants it took me 30 plants to make 100 feet or rope. Was gonna use a method like this my dad made a setup to use a drill to twist the string to rope but I had to do it by hand no power tools allowed for anything we decided to make and had to do it using tools they had back then only and document the tools and process of making it this was back in 2002-2003

Everyone who's asked "why make your own if you can buy it" is missing the point here because... what if you can't buy the rope you want? I do a lot of ropework, getting through 1000s of metres per year, but in the natural ropes that I use, there is very little colour selection, if any. I can buy a particular natural twine in 20 different colours but no-one makes those colours as a rope, which is exactly what I want. So with this, I can make rope in every colour I want from those 20 coloured twines and have colours of ropes that no-one else in the world will have. Sweet 😀
In the modern world, there is very little readily apparent value for the average person to know how something is made because modern living has made access to products the defacto standard. Those who have lived with little and done without a lot understand why knowing how something works and is put together is crucial to meet your needs. TBH, I think this kind of knowledge(shown in video) and mindset will be required for colonization of the stars.

Our safety coordinator's mindset is slips, trips, & falls... from an office perspective & couldn't even run our equipment like cranes, welders, lathes, presses, cutters, etc...

А пряди для плетения верёвки он тоже сам прядёт, или все таки покупает? Сколько задействовано техники и материала, просто купить веоёвку будет дешевле значительно.
Gotta ask. What is the middle bolt/nut in the back panel for? Can't figure that one out. We had one of these in Agriculture back in 8th grade but is was all metal and hand cranked. Worked great though. Also, about the cheaper to buy. I need a 3 or 4 strand 40' rope made of paracord. Some of you commenters, please, tell me where I could buy that rather than make it myself?
The bolt is for the last stage of rope making.
First stage is spinning the hooks.
Second stage is spinning the whole thing.

Там всё гораздо проще, каждую нить накручиваешь, потом три нити вместе раскручиваешь(и сразу закручиваешь их, если будешь продолжать плести), опять три по три нити раскручиваешь и т.д. Получается канаты из 3-9-27-81-.. нитей. И из инструмента только шуруповерт и несколько гвоздей.

А зачем? столько телодвижений для нескольких метров веревки? Если в качестве приспособления,то да интересно,а если в качестве производства даже для себя,то нет никакого смысла,ведь стоимость веревки в магазине ничтожна.......

The rope here gets unwoven if its cut. Real rope stays woven if its cut, and they don't need piece of tapes to hold them together. Nice idea though, just needs some more improving.
