Great video, quick correction though. He was never set to be the backup in MN. The plan was for him to start as long as possible to let McCarthy develop. Obviously the injury to McCarthy placed him in the starting role for the season but he was always ment to start it.
@@TheKD3333 It's funny cause I'm pretty sure KOC made it clear in the pressers that Sam was starting. I guess all the National Media guys missed that part.
I really appreciate you telling Sam's story and you even included Sam's 4-2 record in 2022, which nobody talks about. But you could have mentioned that while Baker started the season, he went 1-5 before being released by the Panthers who then turned to Sam. The point being that Baker, another promising QB who now looks like an All-pro, also failed to turn around Carolina, a collapsing franchise with a terrible owner. To be successful, QBs need support. All of them. Not just young ones. They need quality receivers, O-line, play calling and defense.
Super small point, but darnold clearly worked on a lot to get where he is now. If you look at his throwing motion at usc and even the jets vs on the Vikings it’s much tighter. He clearly worked alot on his craft and it’s paid off, hope he keeps succeeding.
Seeing Sam Darnold, Geno Smith, and Baker Mayfield ALL survive their terrible situations and make Career comebacks really has been a spectacle to watch and sets a good example for everyone out their that all it takes to succed in life is patience and/or the right opportunity!
You know what? All three of the quarterbacks that you mentioned once upon a time started their careers in the AFC. And now they're in the n f c and are playing better?
This anthology of the career of Sam Darnold is very inspirational. Thoughtful. Seamless. Each feature flows into the next. In literary terms, Sam Darnold is almost a Phoenix like character, falling into the ashes and rising up again. Most anthologies of athletes are little more than AM radio promotions for roofing and legal protection. No offense to roofers and lawyers. Only to AM radio. The only pieces missing are a few, and only a few, sound bites from the protagonist himself. I am thinking that the only recording of him was the "...seeing ghosts" quote. Bummer, because he is also a good public speaker. You have taken the time and exerted the effort to sift through the detritus in order to create a meaningful whole. This production brings back memories of the great NFL Films presentations. Thank you for your effort. Good work.
I'm so happy for Sam Darnold. This season was/is remarkable, and I pray he isn't a one hit wonder. Hopefully, this will be the norm for him and the Vikings the next 8 to 10 years, with JJ and Addison staying in town also!
This shows how over the top some narratives become. I knew he had a winning record as a starter the year before Covid. The narrative was "ghosts". I knew he was 4-2 as a starter with Panthers but the naysayers focused on the last game he played when the whole team was down after just missing the playoffs. He has a powerful arm and one of the quickest releases in the NFL. He always had that. Now he has a great receiving core and a coach who is a fantastic offensive mind. The talent has a chance to show.
I say it helped Sam Darnold so much to spend the year with the 49ers and in the west coast system and getting into the playoffs being with a good built team
It's Funny that Sam was a Jet. He had to deal with Brian Flores D with the Pats and Dolphins back in the day. Now he deals with it every day. Sometimes you just blossom due to pure suffering. The whole ghosts meme was due to Flores too.
I have to say this because it's true, the great QB's take time and study to develop. The NFL loves these "dual threat" retardo rugby QB's with PUNY playbooks and tush push crap but in reality, playing QB is hard and few are doing it really well. Terry Bradshaw was terrible until he finally figured it out, Jim Plunkett won a Heisman but had a long terrible career in New England...before winning two Titles with the Raiders. Rich Gannon bounced around the league for year before having a VERY impressive run, look at Geno...he's putting ALL his time and experience to use and he's looking great. It can take a few years for some guys but a lot of things have to go right.
Exactly. The NFL is in a copycat cycle of trying to run high school RPO football with "run and chuck" quarterbacks... Its no coiincidence that all the best QBs in the NFL are Californi QBs...where kids still learn to play REAL quarterback in high school
big true Jettas is the Goat playmaker to throw to, but Darnold has been connecting a lot with our guy Nailor aka "Speedy" and then Addison comes back and gets a nice lob over the top. Darnold to Nailor has been pretty vital late in games and on 3rd/4th downs.
Vikings have injuries too. No TJ is huge. JJ was never was was gonna be the starter. This was supposed to be a "gap" year " to get JJ ready but the defense is on fire and Darnold is playing good enough to to keep his job
I think it's just playing in New York either for the Jets or Giants that is ruining careers or it's too challenging. Kurt Warner struggled there, Brett Favre struggled. And now Aaron Rodgers is struggling. And the failed QBs have shown success else where. Besides Darnold there's Geno Smith. Warner reignited his career after leaving the Giants. A even the most successful, Eli Manning had a lot of struggles in between. I think Eli would have been more consistent and had less multi INT seasons if he had played for another team.
MVP talk was just media sensationalism. Vikings are winning as a team, not because of any one individual. They are all playing above "talking head" projections. The "tell" game is coming up soon, vs. Detroit, who's looking good also. Can't wait to see NFC supremacy (game #1) battle take place in MN.

Vikings have a big decision on their hands. They could easily trade away McCarthy for a 1st round pick in the offseason, especially as weak as the QB class is in the upcoming draft. Somebody will definitely bite.
I dont think Allen or Lamar would've saved the jets either... I dont think Mahomes could save that franchise. The Browns and Jets are where QB's careers die. They think throwing a new QB at the problem year in and year out will fix all their problems.
I still think thisll be another nick foles situation. Minnesota wont pay him but some crap team will and itll be a big mistake. Guy has so many playmakers around him right now
With the way Sam Darnold is playing, do you think he could actually be in the MVP conversation by the end of the season? Or is it still too early to tell?
If he continues to dominate like this then MVP would be a serious conversation to have. It’s still to early in the season though and a few bad games could cancel everything out. Just have to wait and see
If he keeps playing like this then probably, and it’s not like he is beating bad teams either. He beat 2 division round teams and a team that was 3 points from away from winning the Superbowl. He did all of this with out TJ Hockenson.
I always thought he could be good with QUALITY COACHING he’s good so far except for last gsme but they won it was against a jets defense I hope he has another great game so I can trade him I claimed him for trade purposes since I’m set with other quality starters

This is a great video, but Darnold wasn't going to be McCarthy's backup. O'Connell said all off-season after the draft and in the preseason even before McCarthy got hurt that McCarthy was going to take a redshirt year so to speak and Darnold was going to be the bridge QB and McCarthy to take over in 2025.
I really felt like the Vikings weren’t going to win 5 games this year after JJ got injured in preseason. I knew Sam was going to start and it felt like they had a 5 win ceiling still and now they’re 5-0 with a pretty easy schedule throughout the remainder of the year with big games against the Lions, Falcons and Packers. I’m pretty interested in seeing where this team goes.
