I was stationed in West Germany from 1989 to 1992 with 3rd Armored Division as an Army Aviator. This song still brings tears to my eyes remembering the end of the Cold War and listening to this song. Seeing families reunited after many years of separation. And finally the Russian people being free. I hope you enjoyed this song. It was such a historic and emotional time in the world history.

Funny enough, it was a gig in Russia that inspired this song. They played the Moscow Music Peace Festival in front of 300,000 people, and were moved by the friendly reception they got being a band out of West Germany. Hence the first line being about walking down the Moskva River to Gorky Park. It was written a few months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, so they got tied together when it was released. To me, this song is more about reconciliation and hope for a peaceful future as we focus more on what we have in common and focus less on where we're different. I dare say we could all use some of that hope for peace right now. Also, I just love the lead guitar tones that this band uses. Having played in multiple rock bands in the past, I'm always curious to see how you react to the genre of music. Sorry you've had to deal with people being nasty to you in the comments based on the country you are from. You've always come across as nice to me at least lol.

It's very likely the song lyrics were written by the CIA, its a very interesting story and worth reading about. While the deatails are still classified, if it's the case, it does appear to be a psy op meant at influencing soviet youth in the moments after the Berlin wall fell.

The Scorpions were a West German rock group... when there were two Germanies... This song at its core is a celebration of the unification of Germany. But it also speaks for conflict all over the world. Many of the military images in the video are in fact American military, protesters in Tiananmen square in China, Palestinians, Africans, and yes eastern Europeans under the old Soviet era. All of us who grew up in the 80's can understand the feelings you have watching this video because of the current situation. Young people in the late 80's and early 90's in that titanic cultural change had many of the same feelings you are having now. But this song is a song of hope, reconciliation, and how young people can change the world. Peace be with you. Love will win in the end.

    • @dsfddsgh
      @dsfddsgh Рік тому

For all the change that was happening at the start of the 1990's that gave people hope in the end we are in many ways back to where we were in the 80's Russia has become aggressive again against it's neighbors and is run by a thug China crushed the protesters in Tiananmen square and is still ruled by the communists and the middle east is a quagmire but even more so now. The more things change the more they stay the same.

I don't know, if you read this.
Klaus Meine (singer of Scorpions - a band based in Hannover germany) wrote that song as the west-german son of a german WW2 soldier while the band was invited, with other west-bands into the ussr at the late 80's. Must be 1989.
He said, that it was a special feeling as a german, what the american bands couldn't understand.
What a signal for peace to invide a german group to the sovjet union at that time.
Also you can see the raise and fall of the Berlin wall in that video.
A special moment for all germans back in the days. I was a 7 years old west-german at that moment and I can remember how awsome it was.

I was a teenager still in school the night people from both sides of the Wall climbed on top. I remember eating dinner as a family that night watching these amazing pictures on TV.
In a way, this song is an anthem for Gen-X. We had such hope when the wall fell, when the hardliners coup against Gorbachev failed. We thought there was a chance. And then we watched as that hope evaporated before our eyes. I believe this is a big part of what makes my generation the world over so cynical.
But do not worry about being Russian. One doesn’t choose where one is born. One only chooses how to live your life. Anyone who judges you just for where you were born - that person is the one who carries the sin. Not you.

To say every Russian is/was a Communist is like saying every German was a Nazi or every American is a Republican. You are you first and foremost. You are human THEN you are Irina THEN you are Russian. You are not responsible for the decisions a government takes that presides over a nation you just happened to be born in. You could have been born anywhere. The important thing is that you were and we are blessed to be able to share your feelings and your opinions. Thank you for being you.

I was 19 years old when this song was released. I remember that time so clearly. It was the end of the Cold War and I had so much hope. I think the world had so much hope that the future would be better with the prospect of peace between the East and West. In the following decades I'm afraid we squandered that opportunity for peace, both sides. Now my oldest son is 20 and facing the prospect of war. I know history and the reality of armed conflict, but I pray we can learn from the past. Thank you for your honest reaction to this song. I think for peace we must continue to try to understand one another.

In 1983 I was a young soldier in the US Army 2nd Armored Cavalry Squadron. My unit was on the Czech border and we were face to face across the border from Russian Units. It was the height of the cold war. We all knew if it turned into a hot war our life expectancy was less than 15 minutes. 6 years later back stateside, I like millions of others watched on TV as the soviet empire collapsed, the Berlin wall came down and Germany which has been separated since the fall of the Third Reich was unified..For me this song has deep meaning. It meant that my friends in the US Army stationed in Germany were no longer 15 minutes away from being snuffed out like a candle.
    -
This song became an emotional anthem to the triumph of peace over war, albeit a somewhat hollow one. Suddenly millions of people came to believe that in any conflict hearts and minds could force peace to prevail over aggression. 30 years later with Russia and Ukraine involved in a hot shooting war reality is once again revealed. Evil can never be overcome by peace it must be defeated with war. Sad and tragic but undeniably true.
    -
Nonetheless this song shall always be a reminder that life is cyclical. War and peace are simply part of human existence. Those who don't remember well the past are condemned to relive it

When the soviet union collapsed, the western world thought russia would become a democratic country, a full member of society, but less than 25 years later they showed themselves for what they have always been, and 30 years later the whole world saw it. Even the Scorps refuse to sing this song with the words "moskva" and "Horkiy park". Everyone can see how they are destroying cities and killing people, just because they don't want to become their vassals. Russia must disappear, and people should never accept into society what is left of it.

As a soldier in West Germany (US) 1982-86 We heard the rhetoric from the East and the West. From home the talks of Reagan triggering WW3. He had a hopeful heart "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" and our Left angry with the Right as I stood there with my own hopeful heart. It was not about winning, it was about stopping a madness of imagined fears. Winds of change, it is always in the air and carried my plane for the last time to the USA, my personal mission was done. I wondered and prayed for those that replaced me. I had wondered how my counterparts felt when they were seeing it from their side. Scorpions really did a great job with the song. I always liked it. Watching the video again after a few years, I remember growing up in this time, watching all of this unfold in real time. A world away from me and yet brought right in front of us through tv. A little scary to think about the time that’s passed and how far backwards this world has fallen from the strides made at that time.
This song is (as I’ve always understood it) a celebration of all the changes that happened in 1989. The Wall came down, Moscow began dismantling the CCCP (USSR), people began to stand up to the Chinese government (Tienamin Square)… So much changed just in that year that it caught many of us off guard. We were told for years before that things would never change. The world would forever be as it had been. And then, it wasn’t.
The images used were there to illustrate (at least it did so for) just much had changed.
A celebration of change in the world it was.

Yes, this is a song about love and understanding and I understand you. I am American and neither one of us is to blame for the decisions our governments make. The average citizen is typically caught in the middle of the decisions the powers that be make until we truly all get together and get involved as one world. The internet can be the bridge between us all. We can be close like brothers and sisters as he says in this song. You can call me your American brother from this day forward if you would like.

I was stationed in Germany, with the US Army from 87 to 90, and I got to see all of the change happening right around me. The reunification of Germany, the tearing down of the wall between East and West Berlin, the emancipation of Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, and the other Eastern Block Countries. This song was a celebration of the end of the Cold War, and the coming together of people that had been enemies for so many years. The imagery in the video was showing the contrast between 1989 and 1990. I hope that you can find the beauty that we all saw in the unification and the end of the Soviet Union.

Sweetheart, this song has made me cry for decades now. When the wall came down and the Iron Curtain fell, we all thought that Russia was on it's way to prosperity and it's people were finally free! Metallica played Moscow to a great crowd of 1.6 million free, happy Russians!!! We were finally, truly brothers and sisters!!! No horrible, stupid war between us. Sadly, you are the "Children of Tomorrow" the song speaks of. We expected our children to all be born into a free world where our children could reach their full potential and prosper together. That dream has crashed onto rocks. Why? Why do we continue this madness? Writing this through watery eyes. We love the Russian people. Propaganda and treachery of the rich and powerful tear us apart. Not blaming any one country. It seems to be the fate of humanity.

Scorpions is a Hard-Rock-Band from Hannover and Wind of Change was written in 1989 by the singer Klaus Meine. For us Germans, it expresses the hope of an end to the Cold War and an end between East and West Germany. However, the song was published before the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th, 1989. For many Germans it is like a hymn of freedom after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I even think that Scorpions was the first rock band that was allowed to give a concert in the USSR.
I was about 20 years old when this song was released and it was the first time we felt hope for the better. Not just for Germany, also for a whole world without war. It’s a very positive and hopegiving song. Hear the lyric carefully❤

I've seen the horror that war causes. From World War II to Vietnam, where my served at the end of and during TET in '67/'68, to Beruit in '83 that killed over 300 of my fellow Marines, on who I had served with. To the 1st Gulf War, that I served in.

Its about Us, As Humens sharing a Great moment of hope and piece. How at the end of the cold war we got closer as a species. It supposed to be a celebration. I remember when my daughter first herd the song. She began crying so heard. I asked her why and she said because at the time before the Berlin wall fell, it was her greatest wish and what she prayed for every night. She said she did not understand the full meaning of the wall back then, just that as long as it was there Me and her mother were in great danger. We were both in The United States Marine Corps at the time and Her mother served in Germany and they had seen the wall quite often. she always felt that the wall itself was the source of all the tension and so she hated it. When the song came out it was years after the wall was taken down but to her, she said, it just felt like herring Gods reply to her prayers telling her "See I heard you". She went on to serve in the Marine Corps as well and now is married with seven kids. To this day my daughter cannot here that song without tearing up with happiness and feeling that elation and hope on the night when she watched the wall being torn down. Another great reaction and as always thanks for sharing, bless and be well.

Maybe you are too young to understand it. This song was from 1990 from the end of the cold war. At that time people in many countries had a positive idea of the future because the confrontation between the east and west seemed to be over for good. It seemed as if from now on we would all be brothers and bands like the Scorpions (they are from West Germany) were all of a sudden allowed to play in the east and they appreciated how passionate the fans in the USSR were. At that time it seemed as if nothing could stop the winds of change and that there would no longer be wars or dictatorships in Europe. But that feeling didn't last that long. In 91 the civil wars in Yugoslavia started.

Irina. I just found your page.
I love the Scorpions, so my search also found you.
I understand how you feel 100%. This song was a tribute to the end of the Cold War between USSR and the West. The line where he sings ...
    "The world is closing in
    And did you ever think
That we could be so close like brothers?
The future's in the air, I can feel it everywhere
I'm blowing with the wind of change"
Symbolizes the future brotherhood ... and sisterhood too of Russia with the West.
A few bad Presidents / Prime Ministers and leadership from ALL sides... and it all fell apart. Probably mostly because China took over global markets, and left Russia, and many Western countries with less of the global economic pie. Now the political fires around the shrinking world has caused a back draft.
    But enough of that.
Enjoy the song for what it was meant to do. Embrace brotherhood and change for the better.

The music video depicted the world events back in 1990... But the song itself is one of hope, if u read the lyrics... Klaus Meine (vocals) said he wrote 'Wind of change' as a tribute to their memorable experience playing concerts in Russia (Soviet Union) back in 1988/ '89... Scorpions were 1 of the first hard rock bands to ever play the USSR. It was also a song about healing through music...
Scorpions also have a lot of female fans because of their rock ballads. U can check them out (U might enjoy those better)... "Send me an angel"... "Still loving you"... "Woman"... 'Believe in love'... 'Holiday'... 'When you came into my life'... 🔥🔥
Some of Scorpions' hard rock hits - 'Rock you like a hurricane'... 'No one like you'... 'Arizona'... 'Sails of Charon'... 'Rhythm of love'... 🤘🤘
U see, Scorpions are from Germany, and their grandfathers' generation were nazis who invaded Russia back in World War II in the 1940's... Nearly 50 years later, a German rock band like the Scorpions were honored to be playing in Russia and winning over thousands of fans w/ their music... It just spoke to the power of music to heal wounds and bring people together.
1990 was also the year East & West Germany reunited as the Berlin Wall came down... and the Scorpions were one of the bands that celebrated the historical event.
I watched a documentary on Scorpions, and Rudolf Schenker (guitar) talked about playing concerts in Russia, because he heard that they had so many fans there in 1988, but he wasn't sure if the government would let them play there... There wasn't even much money if they played those shows... However, Gorbachev was the Soviet Premiere then, and he was a fan... Scorpions booked 10 shows in April of 1988 in St. Petersburg (Leningrad back then) and it was an incredible experience, which launched their 'Savage amusement' album world tour...
1 year later, Scorpions' manager Doc McGhee organized the historic Moscow Music Peace Festival on Aug. 13, 1989, and all the biggest 80's rock bands came together to do that concert - Bon Jovi headlined... Support came from - Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Cinderella, Motley Crue, and Skid Row... Gorky Park was a Russian band that played that day... and Scorpions gave them a shout out in the song 'Wind of change'.
In hindsight, it was just such a journey for a band of German rockers like the Scorpions to emerge from Hanover, West Germany and struggle for years to find an audience... and to break big all over the world was such an accomplishment... Rudolf Schenker formed the Scorpions in 1965 when he was still a teen and playing 60's 'beat rock' in Germany... Klaus Meine (vocals) was a friend in another band, and he joined the Scorpions around 1970 and released their first album in 1972... the band broke up in 1973, but Klaus & Rudolf reformed Scorpions in 1974 w/ new musicians and toured Europe and released albums year after year until 1978, which was when they got proper management and played Japan for the first time and encountered massive popularity.
Next, they came to North America, and broke big by 1980... Scorpions spent years building their fanbase and they were always about building bridges to play rock music... they became huge in Asia, South America and played everywhere they could.

the fact that they have such a huge international following, just underscores that their basic message continues to resonate.
