This song was written about the war in Ireland but more specifically it was about the bombing in Warrington carried out by the IRA in 1993. Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, two young children, died. It was in my hometown and me and my mum were due to get the bus in to town. We heard about it on the news and obviously never went to town that day. I was 7 at the time and I remember it vividly. There's still a plaque on bridge Street for the two boys which I pass when I'm in town and I always spare a thought for them. Anyway. Brilliant song and beautiful reaction.
Not totally correct. It was the last drop for her. But as you can see in the clip, they used a lot of footage of UK soldiers in Northern ireland too (with also enough blood on their hands). It is NOT about sides, but about tragedy of war and how brainless people become. The BBC even boycotted this song! I wonder why :P
Perhaps partially. But i think you are not listening to the song where 1916 is mentioned and pictures of soldiers in Belfast and all over Northern Ireland . Funny how Brits only see wrong when it's done against them but not when they do it to others . When they do it they make excuses for it and try to justify it no matter how corrupt and insidious it is and it is . The Kangaroo Courts proved that as did torture internment and police ( the RUC ), and British soldier killing squads involved in murder in Northern Ireland mainly against Catholics Nationalists and Republicans . But i bet you weren't told that part of it .
You are correct - it is specifically about the murder three-year-old Johnathan Ball and 12-year-old Tim Perry who had gone into town to buy Mother’s Day cards. At the heart of the song is But you see, it’s not me It’s not my family In your head, in your head, they are fighting She is saying even though I’m Irish, I didn’t do this. In her words “it’s some idiots living on the past” … in other words “what the fuck is wrong with you” Ultimately, the single was released just a few weeks after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. FWIW - I’m a Catholic born in N Ireland in the sixties and this song makes me cry every, single, time RIP Dolores and Sinead
I'm an American, crying with a Russian, over war. THIS is what the internet should be used for. Thank you for your beautiful reaction. My heart goes out to you and all Russians against this war in Ukraine. 💜
Pretty much sums it all up clearly. Even though this song specifically is about the conflict in Ireland and Northern Ireland. And I'm from a whole third country Denmark.
It's always the leaders who create a divide. I say if Leaders want to go to war they should just meet the country leader they want one on one and let them fight it out and leave us normal everyday people out of it. We can elect The Rock as President and he can give people elbow to other countries leaders :)
@@Ryszze Every war is the same war my friend. Motherfuckers motherfucking and innocent people suffering. No matter where or when, is always the same war.
I'm Irish and yes you will enjoy this song again because now you'll sing along with purpose and empathy for all the people that are caught up in war.❤️
I remember the first time my father saw this song; he's from Coleraine in Northern Ireland. He remembered the murals even 30 years after leaving Northern Ireland, & he remembered jumping from roof to roof as a kid. I asked him if he didn't think that was dangerous as hell, he just shrugged & said "there was nothing else to do, so that's how we had fun"
He is right. (Back then) there was nothing else to do. You just made your own fun. Often it was dangerous, but we got by. Best wishes to you and your dad, from Sandy Row. ✌️
Nope, you are embarrassingly awful, not to mention wrong. There is a lot of love for this song, even 28 years on. 1994, No. 1 on the charts of Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, and Iceland, as well as on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song was voted by Australian radio Triple J listeners as No. 1 on the 1994 Triple J Hottest 100 chart. It won the Best Song Award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.
I'm a 51 yr old Australian man. My heart goes out to you and your family and country, I feel and see your soul through your tears. So never apologise for being a human being.
51 year old autistic male, and this song gets me in tears. It's so powerful and raw. Also, Dolores O'Rierdan is such an amazing singer. Love to all peace loving Russians, from the UK. May the dark times soon be over o/
Never apologize for being emotional, we're human. This song was emotional nearly thirty years ago when it was released, and I knew nothing about the lyrics. Knowing what it's about only magnifies it and war in general. Take care and be good to yourself.
I was in Krakow this past May and there were over 100 Ukrainian refugees gathered at sukiennice singing this acapella in English, with all the flags it was tear-jerking.
NL, we're getting Russian refugees now too. I figured this song would resonate with her. I checked if she's living elsewhere - US, fortunately. Should probably stay there for the next 12 months or so. It's going to get worse before it gets better.
The child slowly taken was taken off life support a few days after the bombing. The other boy died at the scene. They were out buying cards for Mother’s Day.
My family came from Ukraine and I understand your pain and grief so deeply. Thank you for listening to this song and sharing your feelings, even though I can see how much it hurt you. Every time I hear it, it hurts me too. It's one of those songs that everyone needs to hear and feel, I think, so they can begin to understand the consequences of war. I wish peace to you, your loved ones, Russia, and my beloved Ukraine. ❤
As a russian I understand your feelings too. I have the same feeling from "White dove" by Scorpions I heard this song in march again and couldn't stop crying I can't believe my own country does THIS I can't believe we all haven't learnt a thing
It's not the "country". Vast majority of people usually don't want these things, to hurt others, fight or kill others. It's the governments that's doing it. And "governments" stopped representing the people a long time ago. All governments all serve the same group. Their loyalty and allegiance doesn't lie with the people of the nations they "run", but by global powers and policies. They're all puppets and when the string of war gets pulled, the mindless leader dances to it's tune.
The one lesson russia seems to never learn is their reliance of strongmen. Strongmen never bring solutions, only problems and corruption. Break the cycle once and for all, we are in the 21th century, this should be the future and not the past 2.0.
Irina, do not be embarrassed by crying. It's very apropos for you given what is happening in your part of the world. Delores O'Riordan had a beautiful voice and played a mean guitar. She is sorely missed.

@@DarkAngel1985Mike Ha! It gets so much more complicated than that. My grandfather is Northern Irish (Catholic), my Nan is English (non-religious). My father was raised in England and Ireland and he served in the British army in Northern Ireland. You've got an incredibly over simplistic understanding of the conflict. Even saying English vs Irish, ignores Scottish involvement in Ireland. Tell me you're not from the British Isles without telling me you're not from the British Isles. 🤣🤣
I was 4 when this song was released in 1994. This song was my absolute favorite from age 4 to 15 and is still in my top 5. When this song came out, I did not understand why they wrote the song or the tragedy they were singing about but I knew it was important. Even as a child, I knew there was pain in that song and it hit me hard. I think this song was the reason I never grew up thinking of war as a game or some fantasy where heros fight evil and innocents don't get hurt, especially as I came to understand the meaning behind it. This song opened my eyes to the hardships of life from an early age and I'm thankful for that. RIP Delores O'Riordan, thank you for being such a huge part of my life.
Zombie is considered a protest song against the Northern Ireland conflict. Dolores O'Riordan wrote the lyrics to the song during the band's 1993 tour of England in memory of two children (Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry) who were killed in an IRA bombing in Warrington on March 20, 1993. Essential passages refer to the Easter Rising of 1916 and its traumatic consequences. RIP Dolores
Don't feel bad for crying. I'm a 54 year old man and I tear up from the opening chords of the song every time. Such intensely powerful music and her voice just takes it to another level. The lyrics are devastating in their intensity and the images that come with them. You do have one advantage though. You have a cutely snoring puppy there to hug and cuddle until you feel better. Do that.
Me too brother, I was going to write very much the same. I've probably heard this 100 times and cry every time. I've never seen this reactor before, she seems to have a wonderful gentle soul
Virtual hug from Canada. Such a powerful song and your emotions show that you're not de-sensitized which is rare these days. You hold good values and are a good person.
Crying is a true reaction, please never apologize for it...I would wonder about people who aren't brought to tears by this song...I'm a nearly 60 year old man from the US and this song gets me every time, especially knowing that Dolores is no longer with us
Don’t be scared to confront reality. That’s why this song is good because it is impactful. Be impactful, without losing your will to persist. Be strong.
Never be sorry for crying at a song like this. It shows empathy to your fellow humans, not to show empathy is not to be human. I was 11 years old on 30th January 1972, Bloody Sunday. I was in Belfast with my family visiting my uncle who was in the British armed forces serving in Northan Ireland. I saw things that day I will never 'Un-see'. I didn't understand what was happening when we were rushed out of the country under armed guard by the British army but, I learned many years later to hate my mothers brother because of the part he played in the atrocity in the modern day troubles. This song acts as a reminder to me to never turn a blind eye to hatred, intolerance, discrimination, pain and suffering. Embrace your sad feelings, they bring you closer to your own humility.
When I was growing up, my mother was crying at the dining room table after reading the paper. I asked what had upset her, she described the cultural differences some countries have, and how the life of some innocent children suffered. When this song came out she never once complained when I played it. Such a great song
This is a real heartbreaker of a song and is relatable to anyone who has been caught up in conflict. There is so much truth in the lyrics and Dolores' vocals just make them even more raw and personal.
Fun fact: Dolores' singing performance in this song is designed to emulate Keening, an old Gaelic mourning tradition... a sort of traditional simultaneous singing/wailing in grief over the departed at a Gaelic funeral. Complete with emulation of the hiccuping noises someone ends up making after sobbing hard for a long time. She is literally mourning and grieving all the innocent people caught in the crossfire of conflict... especially the children.
I used to love playing this song at parties or just jamming. As a bass player, I love how this song is carried by the bassline. Check out the cover of this song done by Bad Wolves. It was supposed to be done with Delores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, but she died just before they could do the project together. Bad Wolves released the song after her death and donated the proceeds to her children, if I recall correctly.
This is a link to the video the Bad Wolves made of the song in spite of the fact that Delores died, quite literally, the day before they were to record with her. ua-cam.com/video/9XaS93WMRQQ/v-deo.html
@@920WASHBURNI love that version (obviously no one can come close to this version) Bad Wolves made a Hell of a cover of this song and obviously Dolores felt like they would or she would not have been planning to be a part of it. I'm just sorry she never had the chance, may she rest in peace.
I am Irish from Co Meath...I too am 54yro male, I cannot listen to this song without crying. I hate all wars - but we lived through the worst of the troubles in the 70's and 80's. The Cranberries and Delores had their finger on the pulse of emotions. Something a lot Irish people a devoid of due to the troubles.
Seeing this video restored a bit of my faith in humanity. If everyone thought about war and violence like you do the would would be a much better place. We definitely need more peace in the world in general. Thank you for being such a compassionate person. We need more people like you in this world.
The song captures the intensity, despair, anger and insanity of mindless fighting. Although much simpler (just voice and guitar), a rare song that tells a sad but real depiction of war is 'War is Hell' by Wes Makepiece.
You are such a beautiful person on the inside and out and the sensitivity you show towards topics like this definitely show it! I appreciate you and how much you care about people and are against war.
I am crying along with you. This song is about my country (Northern Ireland), and the pictures in the video were shot in my city (Belfast). I am glad to say the war is over. But it’s still fresh in the memory, I lost many friends to the violence. Nice review and nice channel.
This, for me, is a song of hope. Essentially i think she’s saying, we need to find a way to reconcile over deep rooted hatreds as the consequences of us not finding a way to do that is the lives of innocent children on both sides.
Bad Wolves did a cover of this that was meant to feature the lead singer. Sadly she died before it could be done. They released the cover and gave all the proceeds to her family. You should react to that one too.
This song has been one of my favorite songs. Delores has been among my favorite singers. Her words are so true.. War is never necessary inless your being attacked. Self defense is the only legitimate excuse to fight. Or defense of innocent such as children. If those who are evading lay down there weapons and go home deal with the issues that are facing there on country. The war would be over. . I always feel bad for the innocent caught in wars
They just keep taking the children and sending the young men to a pointless end. Much love to you from an American hillbilly in Idaho. Don't need to say sorry for feeling emotion. Your video was a ray of sunshine to my day❤
The song isn't from 2009. It predates UA-cam and the internet we know of today by a lot, it's from 1994 and one of the most well known anti-war songs globally. It's almost weird how relevant this song is today, and specifically for Russia. Not just as an anti-war song itself, but even the title seems oddly relevant, but I especially find one part of the lyrics so damn relevant to the Russian population: "When the violence causes silence - We must be mistaken" They're completely detached from all the suffering that they are causing, stay completely silent. This country will never not be a mafia state if no one is doing anything against it. No one can change this but them. All of this is exactly why Ukraine had the Euromaidan, why so many former Soviet Union states wanted to get away from their former masters in the Kreml. Silence is compliance.
This was such a great reaction, this song brings me to tears every time! My partner is Irish and has taught me so much about the Troubles. Some extra context for this song is that it was written in response to a bomb attack in Warrington, England by the IRA (Irish Republican Army - they were the Irish Catholic fighting for a Republic) which killed 2 young boys who were getting their mum a mother's day card. Even though Dolores is Irish she is speaking out against the violence of both sides here, hence the line "when the violence causes silence we have been mistaken" which references the tragedy of the attack. Really interesting to see your thoughts on it under the current circumstances, and please don't apologise for showing emotion - it is a tragic song.
Hey, don’t worry Irina, i’ve heard this song many times and I didn’t know the backstory behind it either. Just never really looked into the lyrics. Oof this was tough to watch. Good reaction though 👍👍
Never apologize for getting upset when it comes to war, your tears just shows your subscribers that you have a beautiful soul and your a sweetheart. Be proud of who you are, if we were all like you and had the same attitude then there would be no wars. Much respect from Australia, love your reactions and your puppy sounds so cute, they truly are men and women's best friend.
Druids have always had the power to stop wars and here you are witnessing a late 20th century version: when Dolores keens for those dead children, all our ancestors pay attention!
This song always makes me cry for the same reason as you. I have been trying to learn Russian and Ukrainian for those who may arrive with limited English- We Are one world. ❤
How can you not be moved? You'd have to have no soul. Was lucky enough to see the band - and later on Dolores solo - perform in NYC. She is sorely missed - petite but such a fierce presence and voice of a giantess. BTW you are very lovely - deep hugs for you love.
I love this song. I feel for you, and for all those who find themselves in the midst of this crap. Wars are political and not driven by the citizen's of the world. We all need to stand up to our government's and stop the cycle.
Your empathy for the plight of others is so touching. You have such a good and tender heart. Guard it well. Stay that way. Do not become jaded and hard hearted as so many do. They just turn away. You care. Watchin and diggin it, girlfriend. Bless you. Shoutout from an old rock and roller from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Go with God. Peace
I remember when this song came out in the 90s. Like you, I just listened to the song but really didn't pay all that much attention to the lyrics. It wasn't until I was an adult that I did. Now I kinda feel bad cause this song is just so much deeper than I realized. This is such a good song on so many levels; I have a much much greater appreciation for it. This was a tuff reaction to watch; I hate seeing you all torn-up like that but I'm glad you now realize just how much more meaningful this song is. Shortly after its release, this song helped put an end to the violence in Ireland and England for a time.
this is the first time I have seen any reaction by you I am a 45 yr old Australian man and I have know this song since it first came out in the 90s but watching the way you reacted to it made me cry my eyes out amd just want to give you a hug . I have to say that you are a beautiful looking woman but that aside your personality and soul really show true beauty. you are the sort of person that anyone would be blessed to have in their lives and as a friend I wish more people were like you
I agree with you, as you said you will never understand why there is war, me too, all the world leaders are the ones behind all the killing, they arrange and set up these soldiers to fight and make it seem like "oh you're fighting for your country", getting in their heads it's sick you have a beautiful heart and your reaction tells it all, thank you for reacting to this song. The Cranberries are a great band the singer Dolores died in January 2018. I recommend Linger and Dreams by them, I have a feeling you will really like Dreams.
When you hold your child in your arms as it dies, and know those responsible are protected by the government of the occupying army you learn why there are wars. You understand the hate and anger that leads to attacks on that nation, even if it means other parents lose their children the pain and hate you feel is overwhelming.
Do not be embarrassed at all. Yours is the correct response. I am a former American Soldier and after 20 years of service, sometimes I think she is singing about me and it does make me sad too.
I've been dealing with Ukrainian refugees all year in my job and the stories have broken my heart. Sleeping in bombed out cellars and under bridges trying to get to somewhere safe. I can't imagine... But when you said you'd heard the somg before and had never had an emotional response it's completely understandable. I remember listening to a song i'd heard a hundred times before after my grandmother died and the lyrics made sense in a way they never had before and i was in tears within moments. I haven't been able to listen to it since.
When all that darkness has passed, for it has to, give us your lovely smile again and react to those songs of beauty. If feelings are tense, remember there must be good times to come.

Delores had such an amazing voice. Tie that to this song and what its about. It hits hard and is just so powerful. Im from Scotland and grew up in England during the 80s and 90s. I remember hearing about the troubles on the news all the time and even the bombings in London which was near to where we stayed. The lyrics get me everytime. Also living in glasgow, there are two massive football teams one catholic(Celtic) and one protestant(Rangers)and although they were founded upon religous backgrounds, even to this day there is still bigotry and animosity between the two sets of fans. Ive had verbal and physical abuse in the street just by wearing my teams colours.
I’ve seen so many “first reactions” to this song. I’m so happy that people are not only learning the meaning beh😢this song but also the absolute artistry behind this group. I am only saddened by the fact that Dolores O’Riordan died before seeing the influence she’d have. She passed in 2018 nearly 20 yrs after this song but I still love watching everyone’s reactions to her, it never gets old.
I'm so sorry that you are living a situation in which you connect so deeply with this song. Northern Ireland, Ukraine, Palestine... Can all relate to each other. ❤️
Bad Wolves did a take on this song *just* after the lead singer of the Cranberries tragically died. It was originally to be a collaboration, instead it became a tribute. Well done.
This song was written in response to a bombing in 1993. Two ira bombs went off, injuring about 50 people and killing two children, aged 3 and 12. When she sings and their bombs and their bombs, it is because of the two detonations. This is so raw you can not help but cry. Gets me every time.
The vocal technique that Delores O'Riordan uses in this song is called "Keening" and it's a traditional form of Irish singing where she lets her voice intentionally "break". She was a national treasure to the people of Ireland and died much too soon. Irina, you should do another reaction to the remake of this song by Bad Wolves, who Delores was set to record with when she died. Their performance brings the meaning of this song up to date and truly honors Delores and The Cranberries.
Its not called keening its called sean nos .which delores actually studied in ireland she never studied keening which would be weird as a woman anyway because keening is done by a man...keening is a type of spoken word at a funeral or a wake where someone usually recites the story of the person's life and their family lineage in the middle of which there is usually a melancholy sean nos song...with a wailing lament ..they can also sing sean nos at a funeral but not all sean nos songs are sad some are happy etc ..I am from ireland. Keening is not actually singing or wailing ..its spoken the wailing part or the singing is just called sean nos ... I think people confused up the keening with sean nos because keener comes from the irish word go caoin meaning to cry ...(which sounds like keen if you don't speak irish) ..but she isn't really keening here
Sorry this is not keening. Keening is an expression of grief which dates back to pagan times but was pretty much extinguished by the Catholic Church. Not really sung by a woman. You’d generally hear it a funerals or festivals like Beltane or Samhain.
Another powerful song related to The Troubles is U2 with Sunday Bloody Sunday. You should check it out, particularly the performance they did at Red Rocks Amphitheater.
as the son of an old Irish man that served 22 years in the British armed forces ... this song hits hard but I've heard it a million times, cried more than is possible... it's beautiful so don't feel bad x
I cried with you. Today at dinner, the thoughts from me and my son were also with the people in the Ukraine, one thinks of the many old babushkas, children... who are there in the cold, afraid. The song Zombie today stands for the "Z" of the Russian army. RIP Dolores O`Riordan from Germany.
You have absolutely no reason to apologize for your tears. This was a beautiful reaction to this song, and it revealed your beautiful soul. The world would be a much kinder place if there were more people with your empathy. Hold your Frenchie tight, and let it all out.

I was born in Belfast in 1968 and have lived through all of this. The song evokes the feel of the period, the despair and frustration.
Do you find it hard listening to this song due to your life experiences?
It’s Irish tune cranberries from limerick
At the heart of the song is
But you see, it’s not me
It’s not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fighting
She is saying even though I’m Irish, I didn’t do this. In her words “it’s some idiots living on the past” … in other words “what the fuck is wrong with you”
Ultimately, the single was released just a few weeks after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.
FWIW - I’m a Catholic born in N Ireland in the sixties and this song makes me cry every, single, time

You are human first, Russian second.
The one lesson russia seems to never learn is their reliance of strongmen. Strongmen never bring solutions, only problems and corruption. Break the cycle once and for all, we are in the 21th century, this should be the future and not the past 2.0.

This song was released in 1994. I loved it then. I love it now, tragic as the subject is.
When you actually listen or understand the lyrics of a song it has a completely different meaning than you originally thought.
The girl singing what she's doing in Irish is called keening
This, for me, is a song of hope. Essentially i think she’s saying, we need to find a way to reconcile over deep rooted hatreds as the consequences of us not finding a way to do that is the lives of innocent children on both sides.

The song isn't from 2009. It predates UA-cam and the internet we know of today by a lot, it's from 1994 and one of the most well known anti-war songs globally.
It's almost weird how relevant this song is today, and specifically for Russia. Not just as an anti-war song itself, but even the title seems oddly relevant, but I especially find one part of the lyrics so damn relevant to the Russian population: "When the violence causes silence - We must be mistaken"
They're completely detached from all the suffering that they are causing, stay completely silent.

This song was written in response to a bombing in 1993. Two ira bombs went off, injuring about 50 people and killing two children, aged 3 and 12. When she sings and their bombs and their bombs, it is because of the two detonations. This is so raw you can not help but cry. Gets me every time.

Efectivamente, no hemos aprendido 😔
Esta canción siempre me ha emocionado pero me emocioné más con tu reacción y sensibilidad.
Un saludo y mucho ánimo
Another powerful song related to The Troubles is U2 with Sunday Bloody Sunday.
You should check it out, particularly the performance they did at Red Rocks Amphitheater.
You are a very empathetic caring gentle person don't say sorry for this❤
as the son of an old Irish man that served 22 years in the British armed forces ... this song hits hard but I've heard it a million times, cried more than is possible... it's beautiful so don't feel bad x
I feel your pain sister. RIP Dolores
Anytime someone experiences this song, it gives me hope for all of us. Beautiful reaction! Love from the US.
You are the type of person i search for when looking for real and honest reactions. Thank you.
This is an incredibly raw and sad song. It makes sense to cry, it means you're human.
