A lot happens in the span of 9 days. A new god is made, a devil takes the world by storm and a new planet is introduced for a few minutes. Man the dragon world sure changes a lot quickly.
Piccolo would have been a great pick. It would have been a great ironic twist. Since in the past he tried to conquer Earth. Then years later he becomes God but to a good end. Toriyama missed a major opportunity there.
I miss the way the world was in the early days of DragonBall. It was a lot more mystical, diverse and fantasy like. The way the world looked later in the series loses that charm.
Maybe but I think that in and of itself is sad because modern fantasy is so phenomenal why wouldn't you want a story where the fantasy elements mature with you rather then being dismissed.

There was actually an episode where Goku and Piccolo learned to drive. It's anime-only, so maybe you didn't know about it, but it's hilarious! Definitely one of the best parts of the show.
Considering satan is considered the "father of lies" or something similar in the bible I think Mr. Satan's role in the story is extremely appropriate in a very funnily poetic way.
I need to disagree mildly on your take on Goku driving-- not on the awful connection to the filler material, but on what it means for Goku's characterization. Goku driving his family to and from a picnic is the statement that, in many ways, Chi-chi succeeded in domesticating him. He's NOT the kid flying around on Kintoun anymore. He's doing family things for the first time perhaps since Raditz. This is especially tragic and poignant in light of his death in only eight days. Of course, we know that the direction for the remainder of the series changed and I don't think this was followed up on; if anything, Goku's character arc permanently reset to prior to this moment in Buu and Super. For what it was at the time it was written it was a nicely subtle statement about how much Goku changed.
As a learner of Japanese and Hebrew, I fully support your naming schemes, Lance. It's pronounced that way in virtually, if not uniformly, every Semite language (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Amharic) and most Romance and Slavic tongues. A lot of Germanic languages pronounce it like that, notably Icelandic, and even our own language, in its older forms (Anglo-Saxon), when there was greater consistency in vowel pronounciation, pronounced it like that. I really, really don't think *anybody* should find fault and be upset about your naming choice. The whole of the manga, and arguably *most* languages, and OUR OWN language (older forms albeit) support your decision. Or maybe there is reason for them to be upset. Modern English is the only language after all---completely unconnected to anything else, without a developmental history! I mean, It's not like we live on a polyglot globe, with differing phonological systems or anything! /friendly sarcasm. Great work, Lance! :) I love this series!
Man, I'd somehow never consciously realized what you said about the world's population becoming so much less interesting. It's true though, and it makes me sad. One of the best parts about the early tournaments was that there were just a ton of wacky characters to look at.

FINALLY God damn it I hate how... normalized the Dragon Ball world got in Z, it's why I will always hold Dragon Ball arcs in higher regard to the DBZ arcs, the worldbuilding may have been lighter back then, but it was also more fitting for a wuxia world. That said, I love both Mr Satan and the high school bit in the Buu arc, because even though they don't fit with the wuxia world that i fell in love with, they're still really fun

@Applemain main It's not the saiyaman stuff or Videl reacting to Dragon Ball stuff that I really like, what I found fun was watching Gohan try and fail to fit in. A simple, cliche joke, but still an enjoyable one
the highschool and tournament parts are underappreciated I think. I really love them even if they are a bit too long sometime. It's really refreshing, and for me it's what define Dragonball compared to a lot of other manga/anime of the same genre: complete change of setting.
My issue with later arcs in dragon ball past this point especially in Super, the author sort of prioritizes comedy over proper character development or a functional story that doesn’t feel half baked. I think it’s really apparent with Goku’s characterization where even when everything’s looks doomed he hardly takes anything seriously and continues to act like a amoral goofball even when the possibility of mass death is around him.
Being a non-american fan, I'm used to having different pronunciations or even name changes in the series, so while I did find your pronunciation of "Blooma" to be weird at first, I just accepted it. I feel like American fans have a really hard time accepting different pronunciations because everything gets localized for them, like, here in latin america, you have to deal with Funimation's dubisms for videogames and stuff, so we have an easier time adjusting. That said, your pronunciation of Satan is so natural to my spanish-adjusted ears, it's great.
I love the dragonworld, but I gotta strongly agree, there is more lost with the "normalization" of the setting then it's earily days zanyness, magicks, & tech.
To me it gutted the interesting unique dragon world to have the aliens seem more special. It is a nasty side effect of retconing Goku into a alien. Then slowly the series paints him as special because of his race rather than hard work. Which is in direct contract to what he tells Vegeta. That hard work can overcome a elite. Suddenly it's again because he's a Sayian and then the transformations. It makes the non Sayians outclassed with no way to catch up. Then villains start having wanked out regeneration abilities. The series moves so far from it's roots to supposedly make Dragon Ball more popular. Instead it really loses something in it's later years.
I also thought it wasn't that much a coincidence. I'm mean people like to say it was the Buu Arc first started that Toriyama began going back to using his gags in the story over telling the serious ones when it was really around the time the Cell Arc was almost over he began doing it. It becomes more apparent with the introduction of Mr. Satan who was more or less the comic relief throughout the Cell Games.
It could be because piccolo is some kind of corrupted demonic version of a namekian. Or maybe he ate food and if a namekian eats food they grow exponentially faster?
Yea, I always kind of felt like the regular people in the world Dragonball Z got stupider over time. As in, it weirded me out how they all just seemed to forget how commonplace it was for guys like the Z fighters to do the stuff they did, especially at tournaments. Now you have all these people constantly confused by these abilities and unwilling to accept the possibility that they exist, and they just look so dumb when they all blindly believe one man constantly telling them that these amazing abilities are "tricks". Also: What about Chiaotzu? Wasn't he revived the first time by Earth's Dragonballs? If Vegeta, Goku, and Krillin indeed could not come back to life via Shenron because he revived them before, then wouldn't Chiaotzu also face the same problem?
Chiaotzu was indeed brought back to life by Earth's Dragon Balls. However, as I point out, he does not attend The Cell Games. Therefore, he's not being referenced as someone who might be killed in that battle.
@@MistareFusion Also this shouldn't be relevant anyways. The rule is that the dragon balls can't grant the same wish twice. So a wish to revive everyone killed by Cell should be able to revive people that have been revive before because it is a different wish.
There's a good case for that, but I feel I can go ahead and accept that the same wish effect can't be granted no matter how it's worded or grouped. That does seem to imply, though, that no one else could ever wish for panties...

I concur but Dragon Ball got to have Dragon Balls. At this point the Dragon Balls became nothing but plot devices. In the earier parts of the series people had to fight over them. From here on out they are collected offscreen. To well be used as well plot devices.
There could still be some tension with the "you can't be resurrected more than once" rule. But then again, the Namekian Dragon Balls are a thing... Still, Dende coming back was a good plot twist.

No joke, when I wrote kuririn, some guy said that I was writing it wrong. Depsite me telling him that he was called that in Japan and that I even have some of the funimation dvds and Blu rays that have subtitles spelling his name that way, he dismissed it by saying that "it makes no sense for FUNimation to change their names". Oh man I remember hating Mr. Satan for so long even after he threw 16's head to help save the day and I understood that Goku and co. don't want media attention and recognition. It was when he befriend Fat. Buu I started to like him, more when he got the citizens of Earth to offer their energy and then I was SUPER happy when Satan jumped in, grabbed Vegeta and Goku was all 'Maybe you really are the world's greatest hero!' *Throws Spirit Bomb*

After watching the dissection video of the fight between Yamcha and Hero (I believe his alias was) I thought due to that relationship Yamcha could of trained to become Kami instead of having Dende while Dende could of made dragon balls still and even stuck around for any reason. Yamcha as Kami would of been interesting as his morals were almost always on the gray side but I feel like no one else would of had the same "humbling" experiences he endures in the dragon ball world and the perception people have in ours. I think it would of been a neat choice and could have some gag potential as well.

@@jackhamilton9604 I always hated that change. Funimation screwed themselves over by givrn the name Shen to the Crane Hermit. So when they got to that arc they just named him Hero completely missing the connection between the name and the dragon balls.
Q77 Spartan I understand that Tsurusen'nin would of been a very difficult name for English speaking audiences to understand how to say, but how they just renamed him Shen and to rename a actual character called Shen just seems like they were dubbing the show as it went along without actually watching ahead to see how things played out in the end. Now that I think about it, if that is the case then it’s kinda similar to how Toriyama wrote the series :)

To be fair, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot actually gave an explanation for them. There was a drug called Animorphaline that could turn people into beast-men. It was a popular fad when Goku and Bulma were younger, with King Furry even taking some. The fad eventually died down however, and most of the beast-men returned to normal. It was also revealed that the Red Ribbon Army sold their own extra strength version of the drug, to get some money for their world domination plans. One side quest was making an antidote so two beastmen who took said extra strength Animorphaline could become human again.

I always enjoy your DBD series. Helps me to see the beloved old franchise in a new way and acknowledge things that I never noticed before. Admittedly, I never truly noticed (or just hadn't given much thought) that the Dragon Ball world had become mundane around this point in the series compared to how it was earlier. I hadn't realised either that Toriyama's more fun storytelling style seemed to return also at this point.

5:22 is my favorite gag I the entire series and I'm glad someone else appreciates it xD Also, Dende becoming the god of Earth never really bothered me because, from what we know of him, he IS qualified. Dende has shown that he has a pure and peaceful heart, even in the face of unspeakable evil like Freeza. Plus, a god with healing abilities does seem quite practical and honestly fits perfectly with the job. Even if Kami had still been alive, I could definitely see him becoming an apprentice to be the successor, the situation just kind of turned into an emergency
I see people brining up that one filler episode. They seem to have forgotten that Goku doesn't even get his licence in that episode. Even in the anime he suddenly gets a drivers license offscreen.
5:48 *"It just doesn't work in animation"* I'm not so sure about that, man. Family Guy made it work once. There was an episode where kids learned they could get high by licking toads, and so to combat this, Peter went to the high school principle to discuss his plan. The scene cuts to Peter saying "And that's my plan," only for the principle to say "But you didn't say anything. You just sat down and said 'And that's my plan.'" Hell, there've been plenty of cartoons where the whole "literally causing the fourth wall to physically break" gag was done to great effect: By having a character rush toward the screen and for there to be a "crack" visual effect applied on screen, almost as if the cartoon character's momentum caused the camera's lens to crack.
While the shocked reactions of common folks to things like flight and fighting so fast it seems invisible will always bring a chuckle out of me, animal and monster humans would've been fun to see stick.
I think they kinda went with "Shenlong cannot do the same /thing/ twice". So any wish that involved him doing multiple things at once only gets fulfilled in as much, as he didn't already do these things before. If you wish from Shenlong to clean your kitchen, he does so. If you later ask him to clean your house, your entire house gets sparkling clean...with the exception of your kitchen.
You know...Dende becomming God could have worked, if Kami had offered Dende to become his apprentice before the Namekians wished themselves to New Namek, at least there something would've been set up for this.
@5:02 I remember laughing my ass off as a kid when I saw the episode where Goku is looking for New Namek and Bubbles is "trying" to do Instant Transmission too 😂😂😂 My FIRST DVD was from the DB series "A Guardian's Return" from the Cell Games. The 3 episodes where Cell blows up the army/Goku retrieves Dende/Goku gathers the Dragon Balls while running into Tao again. So, this episode of yours really hit home with me :)
As a latino (mexican) our dub with our acent is Satan, the american "seitan" and "hercule" was always weird when i played the videogames xD nice to always hear you say the original names.

Love these videos man, it seems that although I have read the Manga from front to back multiple times, you still manage to shed light on things that I never even noticed. Like what you did just here, with the final part. I had honestly never thought about the fact that Shenron and Porunga are two separate beings, so with the explanations given in the story, why shouldn't Shenron be able to wish back the ones brought back by Porunga? Although I had hoped that you would highlight the part about Dende's Dragon not being able to wish back the same people twice, like you sort of did, but more due to the fact that I see a lot of people online claiming that Dende upgraded the Dragon to allow for repeated resurrections, when as far as I'm aware, Shenron has never had, nor have ever been given, the ability to do so. Shenron was only ever upgraded to grant multiple wishes, it is only later that we find out that the Namekians upgraded Porunga to resurrect a large amount of people at once, while retaining their repeated resurrections and multiple wishes, which was how everyone was brought back at the end of the Buu arc. But maybe I am getting too far ahead, and you will address it later on, in which case, I apologise. Also, I am sorry for not using the spellings and pronunciations that you use (and are closer to the original), I just found it easier to use the dub version of the names and terms. Have a nice day!
I love rewatching the series, I always find something I missed. I can't wait for the DBD TV that covers the 10 days prior to the cell games, it is actually my favorite filler in the series. I love watching Goku relax and be a dad lol.
I agree with you with regards to the old world being more interesting than the new world. Also, I prefer the rounder shapes of early DBZ to the more angular shapes of later DBZ. (I think that early DBZ is a good middle ground between the super-round shapes of early Dragon Ball (with Goku as a kid) and late Dragon Ball (Z) with the very angular shapes.

This video really highlights how the Cell arc made a lot more sense to me just because I happened to start on it, so all the retcons were just "how things must have always been" for me at the time. I mean, I was inclined to believe that "Guardian" was just some service that Namek hired out to various planets. But then I went back and watched Piccolo's story this year, and no, that's not it at all! It was only an accident that he was the one Namekian living on Earth! The non-Namekian Garlic could have gotten the job!
Another great video, and thank god you went with the correct pronunciation for Mr Satan (even if I already expected that) And I can't wait for the moment to explain why it's *Vi*del instead of Vi*del*. Man the Dende being God thing could make immediate sense if Piccolo had suggested it and give a minimal justification. Not only he IS the former god of the earth, but he is also someone that knows Dende as a person! As a smart guy he can give an explanation that is at least satisfying instead of not really addressing it at all. Do you think Goku teleporting to Kaioh's planet was intended as actual foreshadowing or just Toriyama Doing Things ?
Fun fact: In Hebrew, the word "satan" actually translates to "accuser" or "prosecutor" in modern English. The phrase "ha-satan" means "the accuser" or "the adversary." In Dragon Ball, Mr. Satan, in his first appearance, ACCUSES Cell of being a phoney and using bombs and other tricks to defeat the military ... just as the serpant (the first appearance of any satan in the Bible) ACCUSES God of being dishonest with Adam and Eve about the effects of eating the Forbidden Fruit!
Finally, the second Mistare Fusion video of the year. (And definitively not ignoring all the other videos uploaded.) If I recall the Buu Saga was the longest Saga (at least in the anime so it might end fast). Well, at least Kaio not knowing what happened on Earth kinda fixes a potential plothole that all his studends died in the future but never bothered to get in contact with Gohan or Bulma to help them with the location of New Namek. It made Kaio look quiet incompetent considering he is the most competent God in Dragon Ball. Guess who is the most imcompetent one. Dende was probably chosen as God and revive Shenlong just because he is Gohan's and Krillin's friend and being somebody Piccolo can be the mentor how to be a god (which we didn't really see from what I remember but it was implied I think since Piccolo was on the Palace most of Z before Super made him a house wife for the Son family). There is also Popo but who gives a crap about that. I absolutely hate the Mr Satan introduction being the end of people knowing about the yellow cloud, the Kamehameha and Piccolo...
@@ripper3052 didn't I do it? In the future, it hasn't implied that Gohan or Bulma tried to go to New Namek. The one able to deliver the information would have been Kaio. As a God of the World, he knows what is going on usually but apparently he didn't do a thing in the entire arc. Now we know he wasn't doing his job after Frieza's defeat.
Maybe Mr. Popo should've become god. He deserves it after the long life of servitude. And Dende could just hang out with him, or better yet, check out Earth. Maybe he could even put on some Earth clothes like Piccolo in that filler episode, he'd look super cute. Maybe he could even hang out with Piccolo, the dude must be lonely just standing in the mountains all by himself.

What if the reason people have forgotten about the past catastrophes is because Trunks' time travel had changed the past as well as the future? In most time travel fiction, the only people who remember any previous timelines are those who were privy to the fact that there even was time travel in the first place. Like at the end of Back to the Future, when Marty wakes up to a new timeline where his dad is a bestselling sci-fi author and Biff is a total pussy, but everyone else in the new timeline act like it was Marty who just woke up on some random ass day and started acting weird. The characters who were present for Trunks' time travel and Piccolo's subsequent retelling of Trunks' warning, as well as the characters who were told that information off-hand (such as Chi-Chi and Master Roshi) all kept their memories of the previous timeline because they knew that time travel had occurred, whereas those not in the loop eventually developed new memories of this new world where superpowers were exceptional and rare.

Time travel is entirely theoretical, and the writer can essentially just make up the rules however he wants (case in point: The legnedary speed of "88 miles per hour" is a rather arbitrary speed threshold, don't you think?). So it's essentially no holds barred as to what consequences time travel would actually have. Is it ever stated unambiguously that time travel doesn't disrupt the past prior to when the traveler actually goes back?
Yup, there is a lot of already-made analysis on DBZ's time-travel A lot of it contained in Daizenshuus (japanese-exclusive, but most of them are translated) which give more "lore"/explanations to what the manga didn't cover (they were written by Akira Toriyama and other editors, and some parts of his team back then)
It’s similar to what they did in Endgame. Even when the Avengers screw with a lot of stuff when they went back in time, it did nothing to fix their timeline. So killing Thanos in the past would not make him disappear in there current time just as killing the androids before they show up would not fix Trunks timeline. The timelines are basically new universes that are technically separate entities to each other.
I never thought about Satan's name like that before (or at all, for that matter), but it makes sense the way you explain it. I was looking at the page with the crowd cheering his name and it appeared to read as "sa-a-ta-n". That does line up with the way its pronounced in the anime. Then again, I could be seeing what I want to see. I can't read Japanese beyond romanji, and I was making an educated guess based on the stuff I do know about katakana.
16:54 Shouldn't Vegeta be able to be wished back again as well, since he was brought back by the wish that revived everyone killed by Freeza and his men? Goku and Kuririn were revived individually, but Vegeta wasn't. Then that means only two people should be in any real danger of dying permanently in this arc: Goku and Kuririn. Wait, no, Kuririn was brought back with the wish that revived everyone killed by Piccolo Daimao! So really, only Goku should be worried if the limitation is that Shenlong can't grant the same wish twice (unfortunately, this has been contradicted countless times since the Saiyan Arc).
I wouldn't be surprised if Toriyama thought the driving lesson episode was from the manga... or that he didn't care if Goku learned to drive. Both sound like business as usual. Also, "Mr. Savage"? Wow.
Maybe it's partly because I was introduced to it first (the American toy line introduced characters long before the American series ever got that far), but I would have greatly preferred Mr. Savage to Hercule if they absolutely had to censor the name. At least it somewhat resembles the original name.
@@MistareFusion Almost anything is better then Hercule, but did the original dub translate Akkuman to Devilman back then? If so, then I'd think "Mr. Devil" would be a better alternative, unless they changed their censor policy since that original Dragon Ball episode aired.

Hey. I take offense to you calling Satan a fraud. Whilst he is nowhere near as strong as the main characters, he is still super human. One must remember the fact that he is a legitimate martial artist and the reigning Tenkaichi Budokai champion. He accomplished those feats legitimately. Yes, he is loud. Yes, he is obnoxious. And yes, he is arrogant. That said, let's be honest... He had every reason to be at that time. While he would become a genuine fraud later on, that was for taking credit for actions he didn't do. At this time though, he is the real deal

There was actually an episode where Goku and Piccolo learned to drive. It's anime-only, so maybe you didn't know about it, but it's hilarious! Definitely one of the best parts of the show.

I need to disagree mildly on your take on Goku driving-- not on the awful connection to the filler material, but on what it means for Goku's characterization. Goku driving his family to and from a picnic is the statement that, in many ways, Chi-chi succeeded in domesticating him. He's NOT the kid flying around on Kintoun anymore. He's doing family things for the first time perhaps since Raditz. This is especially tragic and poignant in light of his death in only eight days. Of course, we know that the direction for the remainder of the series changed and I don't think this was followed up on; if anything, Goku's character arc permanently reset to prior to this moment in Buu and Super. For what it was at the time it was written it was a nicely subtle statement about how much Goku changed.

As a learner of Japanese and Hebrew, I fully support your naming schemes, Lance. It's pronounced that way in virtually, if not uniformly, every Semite language (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Amharic) and most Romance and Slavic tongues. A lot of Germanic languages pronounce it like that, notably Icelandic, and even our own language, in its older forms (Anglo-Saxon), when there was greater consistency in vowel pronounciation, pronounced it like that. I really, really don't think *anybody* should find fault and be upset about your naming choice. The whole of the manga, and arguably *most* languages, and OUR OWN language (older forms albeit) support your decision.
Or maybe there is reason for them to be upset. Modern English is the only language after all---completely unconnected to anything else, without a developmental history! I mean, It's not like we live on a polyglot globe, with differing phonological systems or anything! /friendly sarcasm.

God damn it I hate how... normalized the Dragon Ball world got in Z, it's why I will always hold Dragon Ball arcs in higher regard to the DBZ arcs, the worldbuilding may have been lighter back then, but it was also more fitting for a wuxia world.
That said, I love both Mr Satan and the high school bit in the Buu arc, because even though they don't fit with the wuxia world that i fell in love with, they're still really fun

@Applemain main It's not the saiyaman stuff or Videl reacting to Dragon Ball stuff that I really like, what I found fun was watching Gohan try and fail to fit in. A simple, cliche joke, but still an enjoyable one
the highschool and tournament parts are underappreciated I think. I really love them even if they are a bit too long sometime. It's really refreshing, and for me it's what define Dragonball compared to a lot of other manga/anime of the same genre: complete change of setting.
My issue with later arcs in dragon ball past this point especially in Super, the author sort of prioritizes comedy over proper character development or a functional story that doesn’t feel half baked. I think it’s really apparent with Goku’s characterization where even when everything’s looks doomed he hardly takes anything seriously and continues to act like a amoral goofball even when the possibility of mass death is around him.
Dragon Ball Super manages to make it even worse.
Being a non-american fan, I'm used to having different pronunciations or even name changes in the series, so while I did find your pronunciation of "Blooma" to be weird at first, I just accepted it. I feel like American fans have a really hard time accepting different pronunciations because everything gets localized for them, like, here in latin america, you have to deal with Funimation's dubisms for videogames and stuff, so we have an easier time adjusting. That said, your pronunciation of Satan is so natural to my spanish-adjusted ears, it's great.
Also, Satan is one of my favorite characters on the entire series, but he is unfortunately very annoying in the anime during this arc.

I love the dragonworld, but I gotta strongly agree, there is more lost with the "normalization" of the setting then it's earily days zanyness, magicks, & tech.
To me it gutted the interesting unique dragon world to have the aliens seem more special. It is a nasty side effect of retconing Goku into a alien. Then slowly the series paints him as special because of his race rather than hard work. Which is in direct contract to what he tells Vegeta. That hard work can overcome a elite. Suddenly it's again because he's a Sayian and then the transformations. It makes the non Sayians outclassed with no way to catch up. Then villains start having wanked out regeneration abilities. The series moves so far from it's roots to supposedly make Dragon Ball more popular. Instead it really loses something in it's later years.
I also thought it wasn't that much a coincidence. I'm mean people like to say it was the Buu Arc first started that Toriyama began going back to using his gags in the story over telling the serious ones when it was really around the time the Cell Arc was almost over he began doing it. It becomes more apparent with the introduction of Mr. Satan who was more or less the comic relief throughout the Cell Games.
Why is it that in four years Dende hasn't changed in the slightest, while it took three years for Piccolo to turn from kid to adult?
It could be because piccolo is some kind of corrupted demonic version of a namekian. Or maybe he ate food and if a namekian eats food they grow exponentially faster?
Dende has probably the same issue as Krillin. Both have trouble growing up.
Piccolo was a warrior Namekian, while Dende is one of those who can make Dragon Balls.

Yea, I always kind of felt like the regular people in the world Dragonball Z got stupider over time. As in, it weirded me out how they all just seemed to forget how commonplace it was for guys like the Z fighters to do the stuff they did, especially at tournaments. Now you have all these people constantly confused by these abilities and unwilling to accept the possibility that they exist, and they just look so dumb when they all blindly believe one man constantly telling them that these amazing abilities are "tricks".
Also: What about Chiaotzu? Wasn't he revived the first time by Earth's Dragonballs? If Vegeta, Goku, and Krillin indeed could not come back to life via Shenron because he revived them before, then wouldn't Chiaotzu also face the same problem?
Chiaotzu was indeed brought back to life by Earth's Dragon Balls. However, as I point out, he does not attend The Cell Games. Therefore, he's not being referenced as someone who might be killed in that battle.
@@MistareFusion Also this shouldn't be relevant anyways. The rule is that the dragon balls can't grant the same wish twice. So a wish to revive everyone killed by Cell should be able to revive people that have been revive before because it is a different wish.
There's a good case for that, but I feel I can go ahead and accept that the same wish effect can't be granted no matter how it's worded or grouped. That does seem to imply, though, that no one else could ever wish for panties...

I always felt reintroducing the Dragonballs here diffused some of the narrative tension the arc could have had in the Cell Games.
I concur but Dragon Ball got to have Dragon Balls. At this point the Dragon Balls became nothing but plot devices. In the earier parts of the series people had to fight over them. From here on out they are collected offscreen. To well be used as well plot devices.
There could still be some tension with the "you can't be resurrected more than once" rule. But then again, the Namekian Dragon Balls are a thing... Still, Dende coming back was a good plot twist.

After watching the dissection video of the fight between Yamcha and Hero (I believe his alias was) I thought due to that relationship Yamcha could of trained to become Kami instead of having Dende while Dende could of made dragon balls still and even stuck around for any reason. Yamcha as Kami would of been interesting as his morals were almost always on the gray side but I feel like no one else would of had the same "humbling" experiences he endures in the dragon ball world and the perception people have in ours. I think it would of been a neat choice and could have some gag potential as well.
Well now that you mentioned it, I would have liked to see how that plays out. Could have been very interesting. I mean, a LOT of things could have been interesting.

@@jackhamilton9604 I always hated that change. Funimation screwed themselves over by givrn the name Shen to the Crane Hermit. So when they got to that arc they just named him Hero completely missing the connection between the name and the dragon balls.

I do miss the more zainy world. The furries were some of the coolest characters in the original.
To be fair, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot actually gave an explanation for them. There was a drug called Animorphaline that could turn people into beast-men. It was a popular fad when Goku and Bulma were younger, with King Furry even taking some. The fad eventually died down however, and most of the beast-men returned to normal.
It was also revealed that the Red Ribbon Army sold their own extra strength version of the drug, to get some money for their world domination plans. One side quest was making an antidote so two beastmen who took said extra strength Animorphaline could become human again.

I always enjoy your DBD series. Helps me to see the beloved old franchise in a new way and acknowledge things that I never noticed before. Admittedly, I never truly noticed (or just hadn't given much thought) that the Dragon Ball world had become mundane around this point in the series compared to how it was earlier. I hadn't realised either that Toriyama's more fun storytelling style seemed to return also at this point.

Also, Dende becoming the god of Earth never really bothered me because, from what we know of him, he IS qualified. Dende has shown that he has a pure and peaceful heart, even in the face of unspeakable evil like Freeza. Plus, a god with healing abilities does seem quite practical and honestly fits perfectly with the job. Even if Kami had still been alive, I could definitely see him becoming an apprentice to be the successor, the situation just kind of turned into an emergency
I see people brining up that one filler episode. They seem to have forgotten that Goku doesn't even get his licence in that episode. Even in the anime he suddenly gets a drivers license offscreen.

I'm not so sure about that, man. Family Guy made it work once. There was an episode where kids learned they could get high by licking toads, and so to combat this, Peter went to the high school principle to discuss his plan. The scene cuts to Peter saying "And that's my plan," only for the principle to say "But you didn't say anything. You just sat down and said 'And that's my plan.'"
Hell, there've been plenty of cartoons where the whole "literally causing the fourth wall to physically break" gag was done to great effect: By having a character rush toward the screen and for there to be a "crack" visual effect applied on screen, almost as if the cartoon character's momentum caused the camera's lens to crack.

I think they kinda went with "Shenlong cannot do the same /thing/ twice". So any wish that involved him doing multiple things at once only gets fulfilled in as much, as he didn't already do these things before.
If you wish from Shenlong to clean your kitchen, he does so. If you later ask him to clean your house, your entire house gets sparkling clean...with the exception of your kitchen.

My FIRST DVD was from the DB series "A Guardian's Return" from the Cell Games. The 3 episodes where Cell blows up the army/Goku retrieves Dende/Goku gathers the Dragon Balls while running into Tao again. So, this episode of yours really hit home with me :)
As a latino (mexican) our dub with our acent is Satan, the american "seitan" and "hercule" was always weird when i played the videogames xD nice to always hear you say the original names.
As a funny thing the automatic subtititles convey your pronunciation of Mr Satan as Mr Satin while the japanese one as Mr Sutton.

Like what you did just here, with the final part. I had honestly never thought about the fact that Shenron and Porunga are two separate beings, so with the explanations given in the story, why shouldn't Shenron be able to wish back the ones brought back by Porunga?
Although I had hoped that you would highlight the part about Dende's Dragon not being able to wish back the same people twice, like you sort of did, but more due to the fact that I see a lot of people online claiming that Dende upgraded the Dragon to allow for repeated resurrections, when as far as I'm aware, Shenron has never had, nor have ever been given, the ability to do so. Shenron was only ever upgraded to grant multiple wishes, it is only later that we find out that the Namekians upgraded Porunga to resurrect a large amount of people at once, while retaining their repeated resurrections and multiple wishes, which was how everyone was brought back at the end of the Buu arc.
But maybe I am getting too far ahead, and you will address it later on, in which case, I apologise. Also, I am sorry for not using the spellings and pronunciations that you use (and are closer to the original), I just found it easier to use the dub version of the names and terms. Have a nice day!

I love rewatching the series, I always find something I missed. I can't wait for the DBD TV that covers the 10 days prior to the cell games, it is actually my favorite filler in the series. I love watching Goku relax and be a dad lol.

I agree with you with regards to the old world being more interesting than the new world. Also, I prefer the rounder shapes of early DBZ to the more angular shapes of later DBZ. (I think that early DBZ is a good middle ground between the super-round shapes of early Dragon Ball (with Goku as a kid) and late Dragon Ball (Z) with the very angular shapes.

What if following Trunk's arrival, it created a new timeline, one where all animal people are gone, where no-one remembers dragonball-era stuff etc.
This video really highlights how the Cell arc made a lot more sense to me just because I happened to start on it, so all the retcons were just "how things must have always been" for me at the time. I mean, I was inclined to believe that "Guardian" was just some service that Namek hired out to various planets. But then I went back and watched Piccolo's story this year, and no, that's not it at all! It was only an accident that he was the one Namekian living on Earth! The non-Namekian Garlic could have gotten the job!
Would've been an amusing twist. Garlic Jr. actually getting his wish, but having to expel his own evil in order to get it.
Every episode reveals a new string of "this is totally stupid and doesn't make sense" elements of this story.

Man the Dende being God thing could make immediate sense if Piccolo had suggested it and give a minimal justification. Not only he IS the former god of the earth, but he is also someone that knows Dende as a person! As a smart guy he can give an explanation that is at least satisfying instead of not really addressing it at all.

Fun fact: In Hebrew, the word "satan" actually translates to "accuser" or "prosecutor" in modern English. The phrase "ha-satan" means "the accuser" or "the adversary."
In Dragon Ball, Mr. Satan, in his first appearance, ACCUSES Cell of being a phoney and using bombs and other tricks to defeat the military ... just as the serpant (the first appearance of any satan in the Bible) ACCUSES God of being dishonest with Adam and Eve about the effects of eating the Forbidden Fruit!

Well, at least Kaio not knowing what happened on Earth kinda fixes a potential plothole that all his studends died in the future but never bothered to get in contact with Gohan or Bulma to help them with the location of New Namek. It made Kaio look quiet incompetent considering he is the most competent God in Dragon Ball. Guess who is the most imcompetent one.
Dende was probably chosen as God and revive Shenlong just because he is Gohan's and Krillin's friend and being somebody Piccolo can be the mentor how to be a god (which we didn't really see from what I remember but it was implied I think since Piccolo was on the Palace most of Z before Super made him a house wife for the Son family). There is also Popo but who gives a crap about that.
I absolutely hate the Mr Satan introduction being the end of people knowing about the yellow cloud, the Kamehameha and Piccolo...

@@ripper3052 didn't I do it? In the future, it hasn't implied that Gohan or Bulma tried to go to New Namek. The one able to deliver the information would have been Kaio. As a God of the World, he knows what is going on usually but apparently he didn't do a thing in the entire arc.
Now we know he wasn't doing his job after Frieza's defeat.
Maybe Mr. Popo should've become god. He deserves it after the long life of servitude. And Dende could just hang out with him, or better yet, check out Earth. Maybe he could even put on some Earth clothes like Piccolo in that filler episode, he'd look super cute.
Maybe he could even hang out with Piccolo, the dude must be lonely just standing in the mountains all by himself.

What if the reason people have forgotten about the past catastrophes is because Trunks' time travel had changed the past as well as the future? In most time travel fiction, the only people who remember any previous timelines are those who were privy to the fact that there even was time travel in the first place. Like at the end of Back to the Future, when Marty wakes up to a new timeline where his dad is a bestselling sci-fi author and Biff is a total pussy, but everyone else in the new timeline act like it was Marty who just woke up on some random ass day and started acting weird.
The characters who were present for Trunks' time travel and Piccolo's subsequent retelling of Trunks' warning, as well as the characters who were told that information off-hand (such as Chi-Chi and Master Roshi) all kept their memories of the previous timeline because they knew that time travel had occurred, whereas those not in the loop eventually developed new memories of this new world where superpowers were exceptional and rare.

Aka, Trunks' time-travel did change the future of the timeline he visited, but never the past.

Time travel is entirely theoretical, and the writer can essentially just make up the rules however he wants (case in point: The legnedary speed of "88 miles per hour" is a rather arbitrary speed threshold, don't you think?). So it's essentially no holds barred as to what consequences time travel would actually have.
Is it ever stated unambiguously that time travel doesn't disrupt the past prior to when the traveler actually goes back?
Yup, there is a lot of already-made analysis on DBZ's time-travel
A lot of it contained in Daizenshuus (japanese-exclusive, but most of them are translated) which give more "lore"/explanations to what the manga didn't cover (they were written by Akira Toriyama and other editors, and some parts of his team back then)
It’s similar to what they did in Endgame.
Even when the Avengers screw with a lot of stuff when they went back in time, it did nothing to fix their timeline. So killing Thanos in the past would not make him disappear in there current time just as killing the androids before they show up would not fix Trunks timeline.
The timelines are basically new universes that are technically separate entities to each other.

I never thought about Satan's name like that before (or at all, for that matter), but it makes sense the way you explain it. I was looking at the page with the crowd cheering his name and it appeared to read as "sa-a-ta-n". That does line up with the way its pronounced in the anime. Then again, I could be seeing what I want to see. I can't read Japanese beyond romanji, and I was making an educated guess based on the stuff I do know about katakana.

16:54 Shouldn't Vegeta be able to be wished back again as well, since he was brought back by the wish that revived everyone killed by Freeza and his men? Goku and Kuririn were revived individually, but Vegeta wasn't. Then that means only two people should be in any real danger of dying permanently in this arc: Goku and Kuririn. Wait, no, Kuririn was brought back with the wish that revived everyone killed by Piccolo Daimao! So really, only Goku should be worried if the limitation is that Shenlong can't grant the same wish twice (unfortunately, this has been contradicted countless times since the Saiyan Arc).
I wouldn't be surprised if Toriyama thought the driving lesson episode was from the manga... or that he didn't care if Goku learned to drive. Both sound like business as usual.

Maybe it's partly because I was introduced to it first (the American toy line introduced characters long before the American series ever got that far), but I would have greatly preferred Mr. Savage to Hercule if they absolutely had to censor the name. At least it somewhat resembles the original name.
@@MistareFusion Almost anything is better then Hercule, but did the original dub translate Akkuman to Devilman back then? If so, then I'd think "Mr. Devil" would be a better alternative, unless they changed their censor policy since that original Dragon Ball episode aired.

Hey. I take offense to you calling Satan a fraud. Whilst he is nowhere near as strong as the main characters, he is still super human. One must remember the fact that he is a legitimate martial artist and the reigning Tenkaichi Budokai champion. He accomplished those feats legitimately. Yes, he is loud. Yes, he is obnoxious. And yes, he is arrogant. That said, let's be honest... He had every reason to be at that time. While he would become a genuine fraud later on, that was for taking credit for actions he didn't do. At this time though, he is the real deal
