- Dragon Ball Dissection's Christmas episode is here! We close out our look at the television Freeza Arc by examining the significant changes it made to Toriyama's ending. A lot changes, but what works and what doesn't? Also, after nearly three years of waiting, I finally talk about (rant about?) why I hate the term "Z-Warrior."

I remember one of the episodes (I think in the Cell Arc) has Gohan arguing with Chichi about going off to fight the bad guys, and Gohan goes, "BUT MOM, I'M A Z WARRIOR!" My thought was, "Wait, I thought that was only a thing the narrator said. Wow. Thanks, I hate it."

In the Funimation dub, Gohan actually calls his father a "Z fighter" during his nightmare in the Room of Spirit and Time (a really weird filler scene where Gohan has a nightmare about Cell attacking his family, which he shouldn't have, since he has never seen Cell before). Little did Gohan know, he was the true Z fighter all along, apparently.
But was he the hero guy?

Ever since you brought it up in the Bardock special episode I realized that Z Warriors is a really dumb name, but it’s been so ingrained into my head that it’s hard to replace it with a better name. Same could be said for most of the dub names too.

It never ceases to amaze me just how different DB/DBZ is depending on how/when you viewed it. As a kid I liked "Z Warrior" because we didn't even get dragonball (the first series) until _after_ Z came out, and of course there were no future series to contradict it. They were the Z warriors because...well, "Z" was all there really was. I only like the term now because it at least entertains the idea that there are other characters besides Goku in this series.

In this arc, Bulma is treated like Jennifer in Back to the Future Part II. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale never actually planned to make a sequel, and the ending was just a joke, but when they actually made a sequel, they couldn't think of anything for her to do, so she just got knocked out. Bob Gale even said that if a sequel had been planned it would have just been Doc and Marty going to the future. If Toriyama had really thought out the Freeza arc in advance, maybe he would have left Bulma on Earth.
You're right! That is a very astute observation.
Even then, Jen got something in the form of finding Marty of the future and showing us how his little “chicken” berserk button gets him in hot water.
I'm gonna say it, I love The Garlic Jr Saga! It's my favorite filler arc of all time. I think was brilliant in showing what just three of the soon to be lower tear characters were capable of without Goku and Vageta the two strongest fighters of the show popping in to the rescue for once. Plus we got the watch the whole thing in one weekend in the states as kids, Toonami called it New Years Evil.
I'm not sure if I heard it from an official source or if it was just how my brain rationalized the name, but I thought they were called the "Z-warriors" because they were the Earth's last hope (Z being the last letter of the alphabet, almost like a Plan Z kind of thing).
I have always just called them "The Gang" and never knew the term "Z-Warrior" existed until much later.
I think the anime ending to this arc made the fans say: “Toriyama intended to end Dragon Ball with the Freeza arc.”

I love that this show has reached a certain position in the fandom that whenever you pose an opinion and back it up so incredibly well, that it just gets adopted in my mind as truth. I for one will never use Z-senshi ever again. To be fair, I never really did, because I'm just not referring to that group a lot, but still. Calling the group of characters "Earth's special forces" always reminds me of early ocean dub on TOONAMI
Its a pity Chi-chi, Roshi, Yaijarobe, Oolong & Pu'ar didn't go into space together. That could have been a really fun story. Five characters who don't appear to like each other much, with limited fighting power but lots of weird skills and talents between them using their brains instead of their brawn to get out of trouble. Maybe even fleshed out their characters more and showed sides to them we haven't seen before.
Plus, it’d make for better filler than the endless stare downs.
I always just assumed Porunga worked differently from Shenron...except when he revived Piccolo

Huh, I always had assume the term "Z-Warrior" was just a fan made term but the Western Audience. Had no clue it was used as a Japanese title in the Bardock Special. Either way I agree it's a stupid name. #DragonTeam

I have been guilty of using the term "Z-Fighters" in my past videos, but you come up with very good points for why it's such a dumb term. And yes, this is yet another example of your thoughts going against popular opinion, which is why I jokingly said you're that one guy who just has to be different.

There may be no in-universe justification for “Z-Warriors” but it’s just too ingrained to be changed. It sounds much more distinctive than Dragon Team, which could refer to anything, but everyone knows the Z-Warriors. It’s not a great name, but it caught on. You got me thinking that the implication of “Z” indicates that they’re Earth’s last hope, that they only team up as a last resort. But whatever, different strokes, you of course have good arguments as always.
I wouldn’t get too torn up about it honestly. It’s just a shorthand used by forum goers and the public. It’s like people calling all vacuum cleaners “Hoovers”. The public still call the Doctor “Doctor Who” even though he’s only been called that about four times in the actual show. Linguistic phenomena like that is hard to break. I find stuff like this quite fascinating actually.
I think what Goku meant when he was charging the Kamehameha underwater was that it's been a long time since he used it in the manner he was about to, which, as I'm sure you're aware, was to send a few blasts toward Frieza to trick and distract him so Goku could launch a sneak attack.
The Z-fighters/warriors rant is cathartic because I always thought it was kinda stupid even as a kid since these characters would never call themselves by a collective team name since they aren't an official superhero team or squad or any of that, and there's no explanation for where the Z comes from even if they were the group name type or just seeing it as a collective name for the fandom, since as you said the Z is very limited in significance since only a specific section of the franchise is referred to under that moniker exclusively in the anime version on top of that, so all other material that features these characters before and after that point would feel left out and that just triggers my "Ppl who refer to the whole franchise as just DBZ" pet peeve lol.
I only heard the term Dragon Team through this series of yours that i only discovered like a month ago, but I definitely already do prefer it as a collective for the fans to refer to. It includes the actual title of the franchise, can blanket all eras and sagas and aspects, references the Balls, Team includes the non combatants as opposed to Warriors/Fighters and also sounds cooler. So I'm sticking with that
I personally don't care about what people call Goku and Company. If people wanna call them _Z-Warriors/Fighters_ or _Dragon Team,_ so be it. Whatever.

I like calling the cast "Dragon Warriors", as it is a nod to one of Toriyama's other works. By the way, fans of DB should check out the manga renditions of Dragon Warrior - it is pretty much Dragonball-style combat, minus the power creep of the Z era.

I'm wracking my brains trying to remember what was so terrible about the Garlic Jr Arc. Was that the one where ChiChi randomly had the kaoiken? Iirc a guy got eaten alive by mice in an alleyway so how bad could it really be? Anyway, happy 11 hour workshift to you too, Fusion! Happy 11 hour workshift to us all!
Chi-Chi using the Kaioken was a gag, not something meant to be taken seriously. But yes, that was the beginning of that arc.

Maybe the group just does a lot of name changing, like they're a band or something. In Super, they could be the Super Squad. And in GT, they're the Grand Tour Gang!
Jokes aside, do we ever find out what the Z in Z-Sword stands for? Or is that a question better saved for the Buu Arc?

I confess I am curious what you think of the Garlic Junior Saga. On one hand I actually liked many aspects of it, a more magical feeling threat, operating in a very distinct way to most others with the Black Water Mist ETC.
But I also feel it squandered its potential by sidelining the returning cast members like Yamcha, Tenshinhan and Chaozu, even in the role of demonic controlled villains I'd have been happy to see them. active and posing a threat cos it'd be interesting.

Funny thing about ryusei nakao voicing tambourine, this means both the English and Japanese cast have a dual kill streak between Freeza and Krillin. In the Japanese version Ryusei Nakao, voices both tambourine and Freeza two characters that killed Krillin, and on the English side, Freeza has killed, both Krillin And Bardock Both voiced by Sonny Strait

I think it's poetic that Bardock sees his son all grown up about to fight Frieza in a vision and then years later when Goku is fighting Frieza sees his father in a vision. Even if it doesn't make sense.
For some reason the kai warriors really has a nice ring to me. Can't imagine why.
I think the reason the term Z Warrior is used so frequently in the west is because most western people have only watched DBZ so in their minds the Z is everything even though it doesn’t mean anything. And if you questioned why they use it in Super they would probably say something to the effect of “because they are the characters from Dragon Ball Z.”
Heck, I've even seen DBS be called DBZS

Gaming and Stuff yeah, I remember a dude who interviewed Chris Sabat called it that and Chris always refers to the franchise as Dragon Ball Z. So really he’s just another casual fan even though he’s intimately involved in its production on the western side of the world.

Very based rant over the Z-warriors mess. Here in Germany we don't have a name for the cast of characters and whenever I heard Z-warriors my eyes twitched because it just simply sounds stupid as hell.
In Germany, they are occasionally called "Gruppe Z". Vegeta even calls them "Z-Leute" once. Some movie books may call them "Z-Krieger". The name of volume 30 is "Gruppe Z".
I have never heard the term in German, but I read it on the back of a manga Volume with Android 19 and 20 on it if I recall and when I looked at the teletext to read the description of the upcoming episode. I always wondered if they made a term in universe at some point, but they never did surprisingly.

But none of them are dragons! They rarely fight as an actual team! It's always 'stand here and watch one guy fight one bad guy.' Sticking to stupid Z Warriors because it's ingrained AND it annoys someone. Good enough for me.
@@Irrelevant402 Dragon Team applies because they use the Dragon Balls a lot, keep from villains or try to, and have actually met two dragons during the course of the Saiyan saga to the Buu saga.

I will say...being young at the time, plus also the fact that the dub used that term a lot, I assumed the term Z-Warriors (which I still like to use) came from the fact that the Kame Symbol on the back of the Gis of most of the cast looked like a Z. Even to this day, I think it's a Z instead of the Turtle Hermit's School Symbol, which is why I kind of found it odd that they made a big deal of also having the Kaioh Emblem on the Gis, yet the one that seems to stick around for long or make a comeback is the one from Muten Roshi (at least that's how I felt; the Kaioh one I'd say is iconic, but blends too much, meanwhile Roshi's Turtle Brand has a more defined look to it.)

In the german version of the anime, they actually call themselfs Z-fighter or the Z-group during the cell arc. It sounded really awkward to be honest.
From what I can remember, Dr. Gero dropped that term first after he woke up 17 and 18. "Son-Goku und seine Gruppe Z". Could have missed an episode though. Really hated that, even at 10 years old.
Btw, really like that in the german dub, the cyborgs are all named C16, C17, and so on. Really sound like technical model-numbers.
Sadly, I have a hard time listening to the german version nowadays. I really like a lot of the cast, to the point where I would love to have Bandai Namco produce dubs in different european languages for the newer video games. The scripts though... They put in a lot of really forced, adolescent (at best) humor.

Anyone else notice how in the beginning of Dragonball Z it seems that all the humans on Earth have come to terms with there being people who have extraordinary abilities and super human strength after the 23 Tenkaichi Budokai by televising the fight between the Sibamen and "Earth's Special Forces" and then once the Cell arc comes around forward to the Buu arc the humans of Earth act like they have never seen any of these acts before while referring to them as tricks under Mr. Satan?

I personally think Mecha Frieza being part of the Android Saga fits better. Frieza coming back as a semi-mechanical being and being defeated by Trunks just works better thematically with 17 and 18

「Z戦士」(Zetto Senshi) actually did technically premier earlier than the Bardock special (which aired on tv October 17, 1990)….the first appearance of Z戦士 in the franchise was during the film “Dragon Ball Z: The Decisive Battle for the Whole Earth” (aka “Tree of Might”). That movie premiered July 7, 1990.
If you look at your own video on that film, you used an image from a promotional poster where they used the term Z戦士 on it lol

I like the garlic jr saga. It was refreshing in the sense that

foreshadows both gohan as the "hero"
foreshadows bulky forms being slow, ala ussj trunks and garlics bulk up form
It has some plot holes, like garlic jr being involved at all, being a non canon movie villain, but I enjoy it like I would an extended cut movie.
And anyone who hates it is welcome to do so. It being cut from kai was fine as it served no purpose and quality is subjective.
I look forward to lance tearing this arc apart.

1:35 Piccolo lost his turban. Never noticed that before. Still excusable compared to all the times they miscolored the back armor of Frieza and Dodoria on Namek.

As good as the baseball episode was, I'd imagine this would be hilarious.
I'm at a weird point where I enjoy seeing filler downtime with the Dragon Ball cast more than I do the canon stuff. Usually a canon arc is just powering up to fight the newest bad guy, but filler at least lets them breathe, unwind, and maybe have characters who don't interact much get to meet each other.
Chances are you're probably indifferent about this tidbit, but I remember sometime after watching this episode of DBD I looked over at the Dragon Ball Wiki to see how they handled the Z-Warrior/Dragon Team thing. Seems the editors decided that "Z-Warriors" are a subset of the Dragon Team members that fight lol.
So, I was curious. Given that quite often you say that the anime fixes major problems you had with the manga (most notably the piccolo daimao arc), have you ever considered making a whole new anime specific arc ranking list? I get the feeling the anime piccolo daimao arc would go higher on the list than the manga piccolo daimao arc.
Wait episode writers blatantly not talking to other staff members, oh I didn't know that was also a nostalgia baiting reference in the tournament of power!
In all seriousness the writing having to have as much stuff to pad out the episodes as much as humanly possible to the point where it was like "whoops pretend that didn't happen" an episode or two later really shows how they were struggling with how close they were to the manga, this stuff is truly unbelievable!
The funny thing is despite both watching Dragon Ball Dissection and the Kanzenchuu podcast covering the entire manga, I still don't know many manga anime differences. I mean it makes a hell of a lot of sense that Vegeta goes off into space looking for Goku, and I always thought that's what happened in the manga too. I mean hell it was shown in the game Legacy of Goku II, so yeah I never even considered that it might not be what happened in the manga. Now that you mention it I remember you complaining about in Dragon Ball Dissection.(Rightfuly so) But I mean he did hang around for a quite a long time in the anime too, but your right it's far better in the anime.
In Germany the Z Warriors are Group Z (Gruppe Z) "There is Goku's Group Z outside" or something similar, said by Dr. Gero after waking up C17/#17 and C18/#18. In the games it's Z Fighters (Z-Kämpfer). Maybe in the anime too at some time besides the narrator but the Dr. Gero incident is burned into my head.
Well you said the top three things that you hate in Dragon Ball are: The term Z warrior, Resurrection F and DB Minus - you already covered DB Minus and the term Z Warrior - 2 down three to go
Although since you may not even cover DBGT - would you at least someday do a rant on Resurrection F lol?

Tbh even though I can't recall anytime that I've called the "Goku's ragtag group of people that at certain times could be identified as friends" (Trade Mark) Z-Warriors. I will say... saying that officially introducing that term in the anime canon is a blemish on the Bardock's special's legacy feels... a bit melodramatic to me. Granted considering that line was followed up with a pretty good jab at Dragon Ball Minus I'll assume that I shouldn't take it too seriously.
Dragon Team definitely fits the lighter more adventurous tones in Dragonball. But when it becomes more combat oriented, I understand referring to them thusly as warriors/fighters. But the random addition of *Z* simply because the show also sports the new letter is corporate synergy for sure

Yo Fusion I like this video and I'll let you finish but I think they called the Dragon Team the Z Warriors for a good reason, Z is the last letter of the alphabet, and since normal humans and weaponry can't do diddly squat against the villains of the series, aside from Goku and his friends, there really aren't a lot of other people that can fight against them, so when things get collateral, it's Goku and friends who show up to stop it, they're basically Earth's last line of defense in a matter of speaking, and the Z symbolizes that, and the part where you mentioned Gohan more so, he was the literal last chance Earth and even the universe had from being both Cell's personal playground, and Majin Buu's next victim
Btw, I know it'll be a while until it happens, but will you cover the DBS manga arcs after you're done with Buu?

Considering how quickly these episode end up on patreon I'm guessing the New Years Eve date is just used because it's always been the last date of Dragon Ball Dissection December. Because clearly it will be done decently before then. Which is unfortunate since part 5 is bound to be very interesting.
Tbh, once you started calling them the dragon team, it made sense to me and I stopped using "Z-Warriors"

I attribute the use of the phrase "Z-Warriors" as Z just being the hot new thing back in the day. In retrospect, it does sound silly, what with GT, Kai, and Super, but those were all many years off. Doesn't make it any good, but it's just my little hypothesis.

Vegeta married the richest (and arguably most powerful) person on Earth and calls his banners to defend the Earth from invaders. I would argue he did conquer it to some degree
Now I want an alternative version of Dragon Ball, where Vegeta marries King Furry, so he could rule over the Earth, without doing anything that would justify the good guys to do anything about it.
I’d argue there is a need for a term that describes the main group otherwise z warriors/fighters wouldn’t have taken off like it did.
It does have a nice ring to it for some reason though, but if I must, the Dragon Team is also a pretty good name too.
On a Bardock related note, yeah I believe I commented on your Dragon Ball Minus but remember the jist of what I said.
What made Bardock so special is that he wasn't special at all. Just some nameless soldier who tried his best and failed. Forgotten and lost to time.
I despise how they dangle his resurrected corpse around with unneeded extra chapters and Super Saiyan forms just because he's popular. Besides the usual plot issues and inconsistencies Dragon Ball has, this bothers me the most, or at least top 5 things I hate. They really milk the poor bastard to the point where I don't even really like him anymore.
@Andre Ricardo Bryant yeah that's pretty much their mentality. All about the $$$ as usual.
@Andre Ricardo Bryant of course, but there is a fine line between basic profit and shameless milking at the cost of much of the series' integrity. If some aspects cannot be done right, I'd rather they not even bother with those elements and instead, focus more on making the main content as good as can be.
Of course it's a business, and Dragon Ball is very popular and will always sell, but it's no excuse for giving easy and trashy content just to keep it money afloat. What I'm saying is that they can certainly do better with the existing property but hold it back with mostly nonsense. Not just spinoffs, but even the main series, Super as well.
Just wait until they turn him into a god. its going to happen eventually.

Also the fact the earth special forces is more used than dragon team really cements the fact that is a thing of the pass
