- After a brief interlude where Mr. Satan has the nerve to treat The Cell Games like a televised competition, the fight Cell has been waiting for finally arrives. Goku and Cell test each other's mettle, but for the first time, Goku's mettle is that cheap knockoff stuff from China!

I was expecting a 30 min discussion on the Upper body regen and a 45 min rant over the Free Senzu bean
I think that will come up once the plothole is shows with Cell returning despite blowing himself up. Right now it would be out of place without context.
I feel like everyone and their mother has complained about why the free Senzu Bean was a bad idea on Goku's part, so I appreciate the fact that Lance brought up that it was a demonstration of Goku's confidence in Gohan and even approached a new angle of how Cell set up the tournament as a war of attrition.

I feel that the idea of a tournament where its "Cell vs The World" wasn't played with enough. Mr. Satan shows up to waste time, then Goku has a proper fight with Cell, but Cell blows up the ring, then Goku quits, so Gohan steps in to fight him from this point onwards. That doesn't give the other characters anything to do other than be furniture in the background. I would have liked to at least see Trunks, Vegeta, or Piccolo take a shot at him. Though they do fight when the Cell Jr.s appear, but that's not a fight that matters or have anything to do with a tournament. So, this tournament is really no different than most Dragon Ball fights and can't really be called a tournament at this point. Toriyama, you stopped doing tournaments for a reason, and this is why.
i agree with you, i get toriyama's intention was a big surprise (goku fights first and surrenders) but then what was the point of everyone else showing up if they aren't even gonna help when gohan is being massacre by cell?
Yes, but this concept of a tournament never even got off the ground before Cell decided "screw the rules, I'm having fun," so this tournament hardly counts as one, it just becomes more of the same, more of what we saw in the Freeza Arc, so it should never have been attempted if Toriyama wasn't gonna follow through.
why won't you make a video about it? you could bring the point of "why didn't they all attack Cell at the same time?" it feels kind of anticlimactic when the single winner is goku, or even worse gohan, you could remove both of them from the arc and it wouldn't make much of a difference.

I always thought the Cell Game's rules were kind of pointless. As you pointed out, Cell woulnd't give up after a ring out. And it's not like everyone else is standing there and not ganging up on Cell in respect of the tournament, they would do that regardless.
The Cell Games was a cool idea, but the execution could have been better.
It was basically just Cell making a flashy arena for his fight with Goku, in all honesty.
Can I just say that i love the little detail that Hercule/Satan is wearing a 'White' belt? White Belts are typically known for being first step of someone wanting to learn karate. Just a small detail that i actually like is all XD

The Cell Games was just a premise for a battle to the death. It was never really a tournament.
It also makes a good parallel to Piccolo Junior's tournament, which might even have been Cell's intention in-universe. Goku had spent most of the pre-Z Era trying to win the Tenkaichi Budokai, so now here's Cell formally calling out who he believes to be the true World Champion. That also gives a bit more humor to Mr. Satan, the current World Champion, showing up and being so casually dismissed.

@@saifullahkhalid286 No Lance is the one stop analyst for this or any series. Most DB UA-camrs only talk about power scaling and what if's (yawn).
Always read the Senzu as being part of Goku's betting on Gohan's anger getting riled up in the heat of battle--a weakened Cell might not push him through his limits the way a freshly recovered one would. Which would play into Piccolo's later chastising of Goku for believing Gohan responds the same way to challenge and battle he does.
That's still a pretty dumb rationale. If Cell is sufficiently weakened, then Gohan wouldn't need his full power as Goku and the others can just jump into help. In fact Goku could *not* fight against the Cell Jrs because he was already worn down. Even though Cell is stronger, wearing him down would still work.
I mean, Goku would not need SS1 to defeat First Form Freeza. So, by that logic Goku should *allow* Freeza to transform, so he can the only transformation enough to beat Final Form Freeza. Does that make sense?
There is a fan theory out there that if Cell did not get that bean to heal he would have got desperate earlier and likely took drastic action quicker.

I always just saw it as subtle disrespect to Cell, as in "yeah, he can kick your ass even in your full power" not as something that was vell thought-out as part of why Gohan would unlock his power.

I always thought Goku gave Cell the senzu because he wanted him to be arrogant with Gohan. A tired Cell may have gotten desperate and killed Gohan instead of forcing him to transform

Something I always adored about this section of the manga was the chapter end right before Goku does the instant transmission kamehamehawith goku uttering the final “me” only to have cell have a last minute look of fear. Wonderful stuff

@@spartanq7781 I was referring to what cell said in the abridged series after goku asked him about his ability to regrow his top. piccolo said that he is 90% sure he can't do that himself, and cell said he will figure that out after finishing goku

Darius Cole-Samuels Piccolo regenerated his arm but he had never shown signs of regenerating his entire body before. You'd think if he could always do that he never would've died, or been mortally wounded, during the previous arcs he had been in. It's like when good Buu gets holes blasted through him and laughs, but Kid Buu hitting him somehow makes him weaker.

How awesome would it be if Toriyama made a tournoment work by having Cell make a ring as wide as a city? Maybe he could have been smart enough to get some energy feilds used for the androids to make it more sturdy too and thats what those spikes were. :D

Goku VS Cell is p good; it’s the first time we get to see Goku fight since Android 19 and it’s just nice.
I don’t think him picking Gohan to step in was supposed to be a surprise to the readers (rly, imagine if he picked anyone else) but for the characters the shock makes sense. It certainly was an interesting moment, got me p hooked to see what’d happen if Goku was going to step down...

I don't care about any in-story excuses of why Goku gave Cell a Bean, it's main purpose was to stretch the fight because if they do wear him down the fight would be over fast.
Being able to keep up with Dragon Ball Dissection video to video since the end of the Freeza saga feels like an honor to me! These vids are always so well-put together and fun to watch, I can't wait til the end of the Cell saga!
funny fact: the guy who voiced the reporter of the cell games was voiced by the same guy who voiced the teinkaichi budokai tournament in the spanish version.

I'd like to point out that not only have the other characters been expecting Goku to show up and save the day, but Cell himself pretty much beats up the whole cast (sans Yamcha) while working his way to his inevitable fight with Goku.
You know what's funny, the dub change actually fix fix that issue with Cell's regeneration

I watched both English dubs of the original DBZ TV series and can't seem to recall how they changed that.
In the English Dub, they said that every ounce of cell can regenerate, so that means he can come back as long as there's one cell present
Now that I realized it, it's both Goku's and Vegeta's fault that Cell nearly blew up the Earth.
And partial Krillins fault as well.
Without goku they are up shit's creek with no way out. hes the only reason anyone has any chance here.

Finally, someone who actually gets the whole senzu bean to cell thing. It was never about being "fair" it was the ultimate diss. And its true goku did want a bean to gang up on cell later on.
And yes, seeing as goku gauged cells power vs his own, and gohan was stronger, gohan with his ssj2 power should have easily crushed cell like a bug, which he did even with the senzu revitalizing him, and taking on the cell jrs, all 6-ish of them.
Forget the cell games, the gohan games was meant as an endurance test for him taking on multiple opponents.

Nah. not for a fight that cell was holding back on. If blowing his head off didn't zenkai cell, then a light scuffle wasn't either.
Cell seems to zenkai only from the "1 cell left" instances because he commented on powering up from that and nothing else.
ssj2 gohan was still on par with a zenkai'd cell, and some even think he's weaker than a fresh ssj2 gohan, but that remains to be seen.

well, he didn't. Cells zenkai threshhold is different than vegetas.
A near death experience for cell is more difficult, as he has his core that heals him, where as a saiyan can just die from blunt force trauma.
cell was in no danger of dying, as he held back against goku the whole time. It'd be like fighting krillin for cell, and holding back all the same.
@Morph Ball zenkai boosts only happen if you are beaten near death but survive and heal.
Cell was injured a bit but was in no danger and also he can regenerate his whole body easily so his body doesnt really need zenkai boosts
It worked for his explosion probably because he thought he was gonna die and also the fact that he was absolutely beaten the hell out of by Gohan and was like 98% destroyed

Cell on the other hand, is an omnicidal monster who has every intention of blowing up the planet, and he's making his unproven, untested, _unwilling_ son fight him in his stead while giving said monster a recovery item, just because he wants a "fair fight". A fight that _he isn't even participating in_

2 - He showed signs of being good? Are you nuts? In the 23rd budokai piccolo is the incarnation of evil. He only starts his turn of character after he loses to goku, arguably.
3 - I dont think goku is right, im just saying it's in character for him to do that. It's an action just as crazy as letting vegeta leave earth alive. He couldnt have know at the saiyan arc that vegeta would turn face. For all he knew, vegeta could just come back and threaten to destroy the planet again.

Piccolo has a bad habbit of explaining what doesn't need to be explained. On top of that he gets green balled again. Geez how far he has fallen.
Actually, Cell losing via ring-out would have been the perfect time for Cell to destroy the ring. He lands out of bounds, Goku says "You lose". Cell says "To Hell with that," and blows up the ring. It counter balances Goku's stubborn insistence on playing by the rules in the 23rd Budokai, and is more dramatic than Cell blowing it up "just 'cause..."

_Great video!_ However I disagree as to why Goku gave Cell the senzu bean. Goku was not boasting (maybe a little) but really he wanted to give Gohan a real victory, he wanted to give his son the satisfaction of beating a powerful opponent at their best. This is something Goku wants for himself, so why not his own son? It's like a father wanting to pass off a piece of themselves to their son.
Maybe it's a bit selfish because Goku is risking the lives of others to do what he considers proper parenting but I never once considered Goku was capable of committing actual evil. I am kind of disappointed in the Dragon Ball fanbase because the general consensus of this scene is that Goku is stupid and/or kind of evil, **even though he was 100% correct.** Even at Cell's best, Gohan absolutely stomped him with SSJ2. The senzu bean did not make a difference for Cell. The only one capable of harming Cell is Gohan, a war of attrition is not happening because Cell is too far beyond the rest of the fighters.

Gohan doesn't want what he wants, but he doesn't realize that because he doesn't actually know his son and is only focused on his passion for fighting. The issue isn't even really that he gave Cell the senzu. The issue is that he threw Gohan into the deep end and just gambled that it would all work out instead of letting him in on what he was planning. Cell could have killed Gohan any number of times. It was just lucky for Goku that Cell turned out to be as stupid as literally every single character in this arc except Piccolo.

Well, yeah, that's what I mean by "passing something on". Gohan is a developing person, not static. Goku loves fighting and he wants Gohan to have that feeling too. Even though Gohan has all this amazing power, far more than his father at his age, he never had a real satisfying victory. Goku is not perfect but I would consider him a moron for this action.
The thing fans do not talk much about or even notice is Gohan's inaction and stupidity. You can't say Gohan was ignorant or unaware, he knew he had an amazing power in him. If his father cannot beat Cell Gohan also understands nobody else can come close. Whether Gohan wants to fight or not, it does not matter, he **must** fight. It's okay for Gohan to be a pacifist at first but he continues on even though Cell shows no inclination to negotiate or change. This is not Gohan's first time fighting powerful and evil opponents. Do not let Gohan's age trick you into thinking he is blame-free.
Cell Arc is my least favorite arc. For me it did not become bad until the Cell Games. Maybe I should read the manga of Cell Games because Lance is somehow seeing positives in Mister Satan's involvement.

while i like the idea of goku passing the torch i never felt gohan earned, he trains a total of 5 years max in his entire life becoming the strongest character, he was born better than everyone else, it wasn't hard work but genetics that puts him in the top, that feels like it betrays the setting and tone of the muten roshi training days......

@@ifeanyiozoh5735 i don't have a specific number, to be honest i would love if the whole "half saiyan/half human are born better" thing would have never existed in the first place (makes gohan a gary-stue and shits all over the rest of the cast), and then if he was older for this momment (16? maybe 17?) also the whole pacifist thing is a cop out, he never was a pacifist but a coward (the pacifist thing comes out of nowhere and ruins the passing of the torch), i would care more for gohan if he wouldn't care for fighting at the beggining but learned to love it over time.
Gohan went through more hardship in his childhood than Goku ever did, he survived the saiyan onslaught after being kidnapped by piccolo, then went to Namek where battled Freeza and the Ginyus. Was beaten to near death on multiple occasions, and then trained hard for the androids.
Goku in comparison was chilling in the wilderness for years until bulma found him, Gohan had been through hell and back by the time he was Gokus age at the start of the series
@@halochampion342 Gohan had teachers and people defending him, loving him or saving him, goku was independent and was always the one ahead of everyone else when it comes to making plans and improvements, from being a lonely boy in the mountains to make his own friends, rivals and family.
Goku fought many people alone as a child, lose friends and teachers, and he already lost his father figure by the time bulma met him.
Gohan had it more or less the same as goku in the original dragon ball with the difference of always being cuddled, this led him being more submissive, quiet, spoiled and less memorable than goku.
@@slifer875 Goku had teachers too(Grampa Gohan, Roshi, Korin), and Goku didn’t have to be protected from anything in the early days of DB. All he did was fight in tournaments and go on adventures. The first serious fight he ever fought in was against Tao.
Gohan by that same age had survived the saiyan onslaught, he watched the greatest fighters on earth get mercilessly butchered right in front of him by Nappa. He watched Piccolo get killed in front of him. This is all after his father was impaled only a year prior to this and even that came after being kidnapped by his uncle and before being kidnapped by Demonic figure Hell bent on world domination. Who then beat the absolute brakes off of Gohan for 6 months straight.
Honestly its not even close, Gohan had a way more traumatic childhood and had to endure the harshest battles the earth has ever seen. Much of Goku’s adventures as a kid were in times of peace.
If training in harsh conditions for a year alongside a demon in the wilderness as a 4 year old, then being forced into being a child soldier against the most powerful foes in the history of the earth then going to an alien planet where is he nearly killed fighting a galactic emperor on multiple occasions then coming back to earth and immediately training alongside Goku and Piccolo for 3 years then training for another year inside ROSAT(one of the harshest training environments on Earth)….if doing all of that isnt enough to be deserving of the mantle then what is?

Doesn't Goku wanna reenter the fight because he's gotten over his pride at that point? I might be misremembering, but I thought Piccolo tells him that Gohan isn't a fighter like him, and Goku realises the error of his ways and wants to rejoin the fight to save him.

I love the whole bantar of Mr Satan and the announcer. The anime though makes them extremely annoying because of all the times it cuts back to them. Goku teleporting mid Kamahamehaa is brilliant. It's odd to me that he never uses it again. Goku picking Gohan to fight was honestly predictable. Obviously he was referring to Gohan for the reasons you said. I have seen plenty of people bawk at Goku giving Cell a sensu. I always attributed that as Goku showing how serious he is that Gohan is far above Cell that it wouldn't matter. Cell who has become too arrogant is going to regret that. I like that like Freeza Cell's arrogance leads to his downfall. Villains should really stop making that mistake.
Goku does use it again against Pikkon in filler and Toppo in Super. Its a very potent technique, but it would be predictable if overused, just like when Goku has overused teleportation in general during a fight.

I’d say that if the World Martial Arts Tournament Announcer had been there, it would’ve been a genuine feel that this was a tournament of old Dragon Ball and that would’ve made the transition of legacy from Goku to Gohan that more earnest for the time of the release. The original Dragon Ball generation giving way to the new Z generation.
Good video as always! You know I wonder if Cell would have followed his rules if Goku just grabs Cell while just floating a bit and teleport them both outside the ring with Cell standing on the ground and Goku still in the air and Goku just wins by a ring out.

Speaking of the Goku's Kamehameha against Cell, Krillin fired a Kamehameha in the 22nd or 23rd tournament that I thought looked very similar to the "instant" Kamehameha Goku used against Cell, but he used a zanzo ken. Not sure if it was in the manga.
Yes it is, Yamcha also did something similar when he fought a Saibaman.
That reminds of when someone would move their ki blasts. For some reason they stopped doing that.

The way you compared the reporter to THE announcer from the Tenkaichi Budokai really shed light on this "new" world - a more arrogant and ignorant world. I don't know about you guys but I've always preferred Trunks with short hair. @@MistareFusion I'm surprised you didn't critique this part, but Cell's whole regeneration. Piccolo can't regrow his head, he even brought that up later in the Buu Saga, he's dead if that happens. Piccolo did regenerate when he was shot through the chest by Cell, but he was close to dying, just like when Frieza almost killed him. So if he's shot through the chest, he'll either die or come close to dying and be still be injured. He can really only regrow his limbs without dying. How is Cell able to regenerate half his body, when Vegeta blasted him and then later his head? That never made sense.
3:35- this really stands out as Toriyama usually does at a one page spread for more epic moments. The only other time is perhaps some special title pages.
And I notice that the digital color version connects perfectly in the middle!
7:28, there's a difference between random humans with guns and a giant braggart. Like in TFS with Tenshinhan and Vegeta, Cell incapacitating Sahtan means he's sunk to Sahtan's level.
Now for actual thoughts. Another great episode, and I hope you'll make less on the hope that the quality stays this high from not burnout. I've wondered how much faith one can put in interpretation, even with evidence. Ex: Does Piccolo explaining the joke ruin it? Possibly. But I don't think Cell's reason for not killing Sahtan would've been clear enough. A show, like him spitting on his hand to 'clean' it, might've been better.
Now for a non-sequitor. Earlier videos, you bring up the morality behind immortality. I dunno if you're familiar with Jojo, but earlier parts tackle the idea in a rather interesting way.

I like TFS's take on how Mr. Satan describes the tricks. In that version, he actually describes how Hollywood would most likely recreate these special effects for a live audience, so I can totally buy that people from this world who haven't been following the Z-Warriors up until now would believe Mr. Satan that it's just all smoke and mirrors.

Goku giving a senzu to Cell was not just confidence in Gohan; it's arrogance. He didn't consider that Gohan would start toying with Cell after gaining the upper hand. But he did take responsibility by sacrificing his own life and taking away the blame from Gohan.
At 1:54 if you look closely at the Panel on the Right side with the cheering audience, a few Animal-Humans can be spottet there.
Another great video was the screw up hear 15:57 not on purpose or did you do that for some sort of comedic effect?

I love DBZ Wastelands. It is such a memorable place. Definitely comparable to Namek in how great it looks. Namek wins in diversity, with it's diverse plant life consisting of 2 plant species ranging all the way from simple blue trees to blue grass of the same colour. Still, the DBZ Wastelands win when it comes to being rock solid.
I think it would have been really cool if the ring stayed throughout the Goku fight, ending with him jumping out like Jackie Chun
I remember hating mr.satan/hercule & later on being embarrassed by great saiya man but as an adult I love them & akirayamas sense of humor is so much fun

I specifically think Cell saying "It would be disappointing if this ended in a ring out." is a callback to Ma Junior vs Goku which ended in a ring out. Because tbh even then the fight how outgrown a tournament but a tournament to decide Earth's fate happened but I'm not fully sure.

I appreciate Mr Satan a lot more now then I did before. I agree to bad the tournament thing did not last. It whould have been fun if other martial artist come and witnessed the battle and that in turn actually changed the world making it so a ton of other people started to train in martial arts and ki and we got way more powerful fighters. But that whould make Goku and the gang not special and we can´t have that. But imagine, it whould be like the Avatar Last Airbender world. Nothing wrong with that.
Cell already knew Gokuu could teleport though when he saved Tenshinhan and Piccolo after Ten’s Shinkikouhou almost killed him. Gokuu teleports them away and while Cell is visibly confused by it, he does see Gokuu use the technique.
But Cell didn't know what it was then. This is when he actually learns what it is Goku can do.

15:11 you have a point I never thought about. Goku gave up, got a senzu bean and now wants to rejoin the fight again. That seems unfair, like cheating. But then again he gave Cell a senzu bean and Cell hasn't really got any damage since then so maybe it evens out.

Honestly i place the decision for satan to be the strongest because after goku and his friends stopped coming to these tournament then all of the top fighters of the past felt it wasnt reason to come fight there. Without the champ that beat junior why show up. It could have brought some old faces that id love to have seen.
That'd require Toriyama to remember pre DBZ characters which he very clearly does not.
