I actually remember this dub when I was a little kid. I must have been like 6 or 7. But I recall waking up at 5 am JUST to watch Dragon Ball. This was even before the Ocean dub and way before Funi. I'm 29. DB 4ever
Also, FUNimation's original test pilot for Dragon Ball had some of the Harmony Gold name changes. There's a very small clip of it in an interview with Gen Fukunaga where Goku says, "Look out fishies, here comes Zero!"
I remember the Harmony Gold dub somewhat. couple of other things apparently got in the way of early US success. One of these things is the craptastic timeslots anyone who picked this up would air them in. Where I lived, it would air EARLY in the morning. Like around 5am. I wasn't getting up for school until 6, so didn't know it existed until waking up to use the bathroom whilst my TV was still on and happening to be parked on the correct channel. Also, to people way back around the early to mid 90's, both Dragon Ball (Harmony Gold) and the first 13 episodes of Dragonball Z (Ocean dub) obviously appeared to be interchangeable... so not only would the few episodes be aired out of order, but would be jumbled in a mix of both series. And not in a Voltron/Robotech re-edited way, but in a "eh, just show any of these tapes" kind of way. For the longest time, I thought "Zero" and young Gohan WERE THE SAME CHARACTER and it created more questions than answers. Adding to that confusion was the NES game "Dragon Power". My preteen brain was so close to connecting those dots, but it was just out of reach. But being fair, it was way more confusing than it needed to be. Thank goodness a few years later, Toonami happened. I was one who was geeked for Voltron, but actually seeing DBZ at a reasonable hour led me to be set straight on some things about the whole of the canon.
Unreal to think how things would've been if this had caught on and I'd actually grown up in the early 90s watching DB and segueing naturally into DBZ later in the decade, rather than the messy situation we got. Still though, those name changes wouldn't have sat well at ALL... Zero is so generic and BONGO? Poor Krillin has it bad enough as it is! Whiskers the Wondercat is amazing, though.
Well, apparently a civil war destroyed the Earth in Universe 6. Harmony Gold having the rights to DB would have probably been the causing effect for the desolation, so we can safely presume how our world would look today...
It was 13 episodes that they dubbed from the TV show; the Emperor Pilaf arc. I know because I actually saw those episodes back when they originally aired! That was my first exposure to the series, not DBZ as it was for most.
Between the name changes and the fact that they used the movies instead of the original episodes, I’ve heard this described as feeling like Dragon Ball from an alternate Universe, and honestly, I feel that.
I grew up watching this dub, it aired on Saturday at 5:30 am, I can vaguely remember the show airing up until Goku first transformed into the giant ape, then going back to episode 1
This popped up in my recommended feed. This is awesome. I was a huge fan of power rangers growing up.i honestly think this anime would have done amazing with those voice actors back in the 90s if they promoted better since they did use a bunch of well known voices from popular shows of the 90s
So im from canada and for a few weeks they played some of the episodes that were dubbed the only one i remember was the one where goku is in the snow outfit fighting some of the RRA
I think I’m crazy but I remember seeing the episode where Namek exploded back in the mid-90’s. Did this happen or am I insane. When it aired on Toonami, I was grounded during that episode, but i described it to my little brother and he said that’s exactly what happened, and when I saw it, it was exactly as I remembered.
I had a friend growing up that claimed he had DVDs of the Buu arc, which he bought from a video store in Jacksonville Fl. This was before Funimation released there Dub. He came over once, and I asked him to bring them. He claimed he sold them after watching them or something like that, so I figured he lied about it. There is a chance he might have had a copy of an older dub, but I doubt it. I bet those DVDs would be worth a lot today. I personally think we could use another dubbing company in the US. Funimation is the only decent one I know of, but they still aren't that good. Dragon Ball Super should already have been released by now.
I might not be a Dragon Ball fan, but I am interested in lost media. Harmony Gold also tried to dub 52 episodes of Magical Princess Minky Momo which was a magical girl anime from the 1980s. Harmony Gold could had not find anyone to pick up the series, but however it did air in Australia on ATV-10 Melbourne around late 1986 and it was reran on that and its Adelaide station ADS-10 in early 1988. It also aired on RTM2 in Malaysia around the same time. For more information please look up "The Magical World of Gigi."
I remember watching dragon ball when I was very young in the early 90s before toonami featured Dbz in the late 90s... so I’m pretty sure I watched this dub!
this dub was on a local station when i was a kid back in the 90's. At the time I was unaware that the very same show I paid little attention to would become my favorite show in existence one day lol
xDDD I remember Kuririn being named Bongo, due to watching a pardoy Dragonball pardoy around a few years ago, and Whiskers the wonder cat as well in that parody.
man, i remember when the original Dragon Ball aired in the US. unfortunately they only aired 3 or 4 episodes :/ but immediately after the show was done.......... the Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) anime, which i only seen 1 episode of :p
Dude, you have to cover The Big Green dub and/or Malaysian dubs next... the terrible voice acting in both has left me on the floor laughing in a multitude of different times... Informative video though nonetheless.
Great video man. I do remember seeing a TV commercial for the Harmony Gold version a long time ago, but I forget what station it was for and I'm pretty sure it was one of "action-block" commercials where they ran through the schedule of when each show would be on. I think it came on either Saturdays or Sundays at 7:00 am. Do you plan on doing a in-depth video on the Trimark version on the Dragon Ball dub as well?
Hey geekdom I just want to add extra data to your video, this harmony gold version of Dragon ball got a spanish dub here in Mex and it even have the op and end in english and all the names changes, except for Lina who for whatever reason maintained her japanesse name, they even dub the movie. The series got renamed as "Zero y el Dragon magico" (Zero and the magic Dragon?) You can search for it here on UA-cam. The think is that I'm not going to say it was a success here because i was to young for remeber it, but the series kept on air for a total of 60 episodes, so we can say that harmony gold at least had the licence for 60 episodes? After episode 60 harmony gold or whoever was producing the spanish dub went in a discussion with the studio in charge of.the dub, because they change their minds and want to have the original japanesse names for all the characters and even want retakes of the first 60 episodes and of course the studio neglected because they aren't going to be payed for all the retakes of the first 60 ep So again, whoever has the licence moved the series to another dub studio and THANK GOD we got a redub with the original Japanese names and a faithful translation starting from episode 1 of Dragon ball and ending in episode 54 of Dragon ball GT :)
To my knowledge no one has come forward with an actual retail Harmony Gold tape. Of the three versions floating around the web that I've seen: two were taped off the same Philly 57 TV broadcast, and one uses visuals from a more recent DVD with audio again from the TV broadcast.
I am surprised you did not mention how Krillin in dragon ball z abridged by teamfourstar made the joke "i forget his name and started calling him whiskers the wonder cat the whole time. It was super awkward" (not an exact quote but close enough) Its from the 1st cooler movie abridged
There's a strong chance that the Streamline Pictures tape was never actually released. I've never seen any images, listings, or heard about anyone owning the tape. The 2 copies of the movie that have surfaced online are both recorded off of its original TV broadcast (one of which having all the commercials still intact). As far as how many episodes they actually dubbed, I believe that they dubbed AT LEAST the first 4 episodes because there was a Spanish dub that was based off the Harmony Gold dub and they dubbed around 60 episodes and the movie 1 and 3 combination. (meaning Harmony Gold had scripted at least that many episodes) and for the the first few episodes and the movie they actually used the edited Harmony Gold masters, sometimes you could hear the English acting and most of the time they had to use their own cheap music to dub over scenes. Later episodes of this dub however are practically uncut and keep the original music intact.
I wish this dub would be re-released in its entirety. I mean ... sure, it would be horrible, but it would be one of those "so bad it' good" kind of things.
I've heard some audio clips from this dub before, but I've never seen any full videos of it before (though admittedly, I never really looked that hard). I wouldn't mind checking out a full episode, or even better, that mash-up of the two movies.
Yes geekdom blameitonjorge made a video on lost stuff and harmony gold dub db was mentioned it has been found and it has A very deep information with even an interview with one of the distributor
I watch Cartoon Network and not so much Nickelodeon and I can say that the odds of Dragon Ball Super premiering on both networks are very small. Cartoon Network has no action-oriented shows and no, Teen titans go is more about comedy than action. Steven Universe has more action, but the show has a balance of both humor and action, along with emotionally driven episodes. Nickelodeon's only action show is TMNT and is a decent show to watch from what I've heard. Anyway, there are two options for DBS: either broadcast the show on Saturday nights at 8:00 on adultswim to take the spot of DBZ Kai reruns or Toei needs to realize that streaming online is more convenient for their target audience because kids, teens and adults are sometimes not always inside the house at those times.Toei will make money regardless if they stream it on crunchyroll or Hulu since they show DB and DBZ. That's what I think should happen with the English dub when it comes the North America.
+senzu kai Oh I know DBZ Kai was on Nicktoons. The reason I didn't mention it was because I don't want dragon ball super to air on Nickelodeon or Nicktoons. Their either edited it to make it kid-friendly since all there animated shows are TV-7, unlike Cartoon Network, who have upgraded some of their show's ratings to TV-PG, or cancel the show after complaints from parents who say the show is too violent. That's what happened to Naruto Shippudden when it got cancelled after 97 episodes on Disney XD due to complaints of the violence on a Disney channel, since they're known for being kid and family friendly.
The thing about the names like Zero and whiskers. I think they were names TOEI came up with. Ken Fukunaga mentions in a interview on i think the 2nd or 3rd season DVD release that the original pilot for their DragonBall dub had those names in it. Why would you keep the old dubs names? And TOEI has a history of giving things English names that dont match what the translation really means. like Zyuranger, the Super Sentai season that became Power Rangers' first season. Was given the English title by TOEI of "Galaxy Rangers". Which is not a translation of Zyuranger at all which would be "Beast Rangers". which makes more since about a show with with a super hero team based on prehistoric animals and nothing to do about space.
I will never understand why Geekdom doesn't have over 100k subs by now. Guy works his ass off doing full on research for these videos! :( I guess there are too many of those "Y DO U PRONOUNCE SAIYEEEEN LIK A WEIRDOO!? ITS MAKIN MAH EARS BLEED! TEH ORIGINUL DEEBEE ZEE ENGLISH DUB IS MUCH BETTA AND HAZ NO PROBLEMZ!! BECUZ GIRL GOKU SUX! LOL!" type of fans.
I think I saw one of these episodes once. It was like 5am and I payed no mind to it and didn't care for it. I feel that it was its strange time slot as well as being only on local TV stations that killed it. Thought its probably for the better. Considering how little I can remember of it, I think that shows how lack luster this dub was.
Last time I hung out with Corin I totally forgot what his name was and just kept calling him Whiskers the Wonder Cat the whole time. It was really awkward.
The 40-minute “Mystical Adventure” episodes are floating on UA-cam atm, I saw it and it really confused me as I’m urgently on a Dragon Ball watching marathon as I only watched Z as a kid hehe, tot’s different from the original DragonBall
If THIS was the definitive version of dragon ball in the states, your mission to educate the community would never end.

Looking at how Harmony Gold has been treating Macross, I'm happy it didn't pan out.
There was a Filipino English dub of Dragon Ball back in the 1990s by a company called Creative Products, it was sadly incomplete.
Hey geekdom
I just want to add extra data to your video, this harmony gold version of Dragon ball got a spanish dub here in Mex and it even have the op and end in english and all the names changes, except for Lina who for whatever reason maintained her japanesse name, they even dub the movie.
Great video Big D didn't know about the voice cast and its connection to Power Rangers as a big sentai fan that interested me greatly.
+Kabe Silvermaine crazy bro
I will never understand why Geekdom doesn't have over 100k subs by now. Guy works his ass off doing full on research for these videos! :(

type of fans.

+Own A Hole totally agreed, children like people to lie to them like those click baiters, Geekdom is by far the most knowledgeable DBZ Tuber there is
+Own A Hole thanks for the kind words and i love your comment - it takes time to hit 100K tho... it really does
I think I saw one of these episodes once. It was like 5am and I payed no mind to it and didn't care for it. I feel that it was its strange time slot as well as being only on local TV stations that killed it. Thought its probably for the better. Considering how little I can remember of it, I think that shows how lack luster this dub was.
So this is why DBZA called Mr. Korrin this at one episode
