Derry Girls Masterclass With Lisa Mcgee, Cast & Creatives | Edinburgh TV Festival 2018

- At the beginning of the year, four Derry Girls (and one wee English fella) made their riotous, blasphemous and hilarious debut on Channel 4. Set in the early 90s in a place called Derry (or Londonderry, depending on your persuasion), Lisa McGee’s relatable and nostalgic family comedy - warm and profane, daft and tender, celebratory and outrageous - quickly gathered legions of fans, widespread critical acclaim and record-breaking viewing figures.
In this masterclass, which will also include a live table read by the cast, creator Lisa McGee, cast members and other key creatives from the hit comedy discuss the process of bringing the series to screen and the overwhelming responses from audiences.
Session Producer: Ryan Davies, Group Publicity Manager - Drama, Comedy & Acquisitions, Channel 4 Television

Louisa giggling throughout the whole read-through & Nicola 1000% in character brings me joy 😂
Orla reading Erin’s diary was the scene that made me realize that this show is gold. Yes, the first scene!
Same
I agree. It's rare that a new comedy can make me laugh out loud in the first episode, so when a new comedy can make me laugh out loud from the very first scene, I know it's very special.
For me it was when it started with Dreams by the Cranberries, just from the 1st measure that hooked me.
Watched it on Netflix in one sitting, so good🙌🏼👏🏼
@@Djboofman it's coming out in the UK and Ireland in March apparently. Their already talking about season 3 and there's rumors of a film to finish it off :-)
Same-I'm waiting for a second season if any... but I'm hoping they add more European shows on Netflix or Hulu in the future.
@@THAT.RANDOM.GUY_ I mean, that's sort of the requirement they have to fulfill with the EU law that requires netflix and similar to have a percentage of european produced shows rather than 90% hollywoo + some pop anime
Yes! Me too! Got it all done in one weekend! Superb show!
@@THAT.RANDOM.GUY_ season 2 is on the all4 app
Shocked that Louisa Harland is not recognized. She is brilliant as Orla McCool.
I think a little Orla cult is growing. Some of her lines are so off the wall, they don't reveal themselves until at least a second or third watching. Also, in group interviews with the others, she comes off as a fairly attractive chick.
She's hilarious! Exceptional delivery of her lines--and with such a straight face, too!
@I Coroa You're right. I just didn't pay attention before. Funniest show ever!
@@bookdear (Orla as she throws her cigarette lighter to the guy outside the shop in episode 1.01). "I don't smoke either, I just like mel'in' stuff !"
@@klausrain111 The third time watching the show is when you come across all the Orla antics, the actual content of what Colm is saying, the utter seriousness that Aunt Sarah's absurdity comes with and the background score really comes to life too.
Siobhan McSweeney as Sister Michael, pure gold
She practically steals the whole show :)
@@46kevs For REAL. They're all super funny, but Sister Michael... she has me 💀💀💀
@@Anti-Social_Socialite My friend swears that Sr. Michael was in her convent school in NI.
She is Great!
I'm a real Derry girl, born and bred and I will never leave!
I lived through the entirety of "the troubles" and we never lost our sense of humour!
I'm from Bangladesh and I've never thought I'll enjoy a series based on Derry, Nothern Ireland this much. I finished both seasons in two days. The best part is, no one suggested this show to me, I kinda found it randomly one day on Netflix. I can't wait for S3, all the cast members are outstanding. We want at least 6 seasons and a Derry Girl movie 😁
Saw this in the U.S. on Netflix and it's funny as hell. The wee gay English fella.
"WHAT GAY THING??!!" 😁
@Nolwenn Appelbaum Don't be pedantic, you know what he/she means!
@Nolwenn Appelbaum Apologies for being slow on the uptake :)
There is no gay thing! .. I too watched on Netflix
KingDomofSkeough do you wanna move overs I can’t see past your massive closet:)
There are a few celebs that come to Derry often because literally NO ONE takes them on... they can just wander around.
A famous story is from Will Farrell...
he came here and was standing at a traffic light and some guy rolled his window down and just said
"Hi, Will Farrell?"
- "Yeah"
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
Farrell just went "Uhhh..."
and the guy drove on
Fuck I hope that's true🤣
It has to be, that is the definition of a Northern Irish grandfather, ask a question as bluntly as possible and then fuck off before the answer comes.
Ferrell
I'm American and this show absolutely kills me! The characters seem so real and I have truly fallen in love with all of the characters.
Yes as have I watched the series 4 times I want them in my everyday life! We need a current Derry Girls series NEED
I'm a 52 year old American male and can not believe that a show about Derry school girls ( and a wee English fellow ) can be so funny and entertaining. Possibly the only sitcom in history to pop from episode 1. Normally it takes at least a season to be that funny and for the characters to gel. Thank you Lisa McGhee, the cast and the crew. Truly an iconic show.
No mention of Ma Mary and Da Gerry? Such a great supporting cast.
Lisa Mcgee is a comedic genius.
I'm from South Africa and Derry Girls is my favourite series at the moment. I'm a little bummed that it takes like a year to release each season but it's worth the wait. I've managed to get so many people on it so we're all waiting in eager anticipation while I grow it's fanbase by recommendation 😂
I’m also from South Africa! And I absolutely love the show😍
Aweh!!!! Same here I'm dying waiting for season 3😂😪
@@lesedi1896 it's gonna take forever now with COVID 😩 but check out The Young Offenders and Fleabag 😊 they're also *chef's kiss*
were I am from Northern Ireland I LIVE in the 1990s
I love these girls! And the "wee gay fella" ❤😂
He’s not gay! As he himself says.
It took me a while to get used to the Northern Irish accent, but I've really grown to love it.
Saw it in the Netflix menu. Watched the first few minutes thinking I’d give it the flick quickly, 2 and a half hours later, I was hooked! Brilliant!!
The wee English fella!!!
Orla is my absolute fav. So free - like an incarnate faerie… especially loved when she invited her granda to the school dance because he was her favorite guy…
Daaayum that cast read is A MA Z I N G.
This show is so funny i am so glad there is a season 2
rebeca prat Season 3 is being released next year and their also toying with the idea of making a movie !
I'm from the Netherlands and my 15-year old daughter and I love the series (thank God for Dutch subtitles on Netflix :-) ). Obviously she doesn't know anything about the Troubles era, but she can relate to what girls go through, wherever they live.
(excuse me, for replying to your comment, from 3 years ago). I am glad that in The Netherlands you could watch Derry Girls, with Dutch subtitles available. I am assuming it had the original audio sound. Something to keep in mind is that the "English" as spoken on that show has a strong Irish accent (and I believe that dialogue coaching ensured that the Derry sub-version, of the Northern Ireland version, of The Irish accent was correctly used). Being that I am from New Zealand (and Australia), from British born parents, almost none of the words were new to me. (except for "thon" which seems by context to mean "this one". And for "boke" where we would have said "spew" or "chunder" as a slang word for 'vomit'). However after only discovering this show in late 2022 and watching, then re-watching, Derry Girls all 3 seasons, I find myself using some of their phrases nowadays. I cannot pick variations of accent much beyond "that sounds like a Scottish or Irish accent to me". But I have read that accents vary all around Ireland's North and South. I suggest you keep watching English language programmes with the (Dutch) subtitles on, and I wish you all the best with your learning/understanding of English. Perhaps you could watch some Australian or New Zealand programmes if you want to better understand our Southern Hemisphere accents (which are themselves similar, but slightly different). With so many Australasians (including Kiwis) being from British Isles descent (including Ireland), The decades long, low level simmering 'civil war' which was called "The Troubles" was often reported in the news here, even this far away.
Derrry Girls is just as funny in Mexico City, (people were howling, even though the subtitles lost a lot of the Derry-feel of the lines), San Diego (my students love it), as it is in Derry. Yes, it's universal. Good work!
Do I remember you from Brooklyn years ago?
John Mc Donagh - Hi John - this is the very same Fergal. I remember you too from Brooklyn (I lived in Cobble Hill and Park Slope when both were not yet taken over by rich people. I’m thrilled you made the connection!
I'm from Portugal and reside in Kuwait. What a show! I binged watched it through the weekend! What a cast, direction, screenplay and acting. Great show, extremely hilarious!! Congratulations to Lisa McGee for her writing and the rest of the production crew for creating such a show. The music was extremely nostalgic! all the tracks used in the show brought back so many memories.
The show is brilliant, I’m from the u.s. and it reminded me of growing up in the 90’s and I’ve become so interested in Derry and their history, can’t wait for a 2nd season- please more epps in the next season!
Rachael
Does Orla still do Step Aerobics?
"It's the Polar Bear…!!!" - my favourite Orla line. :)
I’m Brazilian and I absolutely adore Derry Girls. I’ve recommended it to basically everyone I know.
I was there! It was absolutely amazing!! They were incredible! I can’t wait for season 2!!
The reason the show is a success (in my mind) is that in every episode in all 3 seasons there was at least one scene that made me laugh out loud. Really laugh out loud. Most supposed comedies might get a smirk or chuckle or two from me. And I'm an old man from Canada.
I'm Canadian and I'm absolutely obsessed with this show! It makes me wish I was from Newfoundland so I could have an accent and be around more of the kind of lingo and customs!
I love that other countries are learning a bit about our wee country as well 😊 I think that final scene in season 2 was such a strong finish, if you ask anyone alive in the 90s in Northern Ireland, they’ll remember where they were when Omagh happened. (I don’t think they say it was the Omagh bombing but the time frame suggests it was and the impact of that day was insane).
american here, and i must have watched Derry Girls at least ten times! i simply can't get enough of it!
ironically enough, i live in a place in ohio called Londonderry!
I absolutely LOVE this show over here in Canada!
I’ve never felt better represented than I do with this show and seeing all these comments from different countries saying they love the show just warms my heart ❤️🥰😊 the thing they are saying about our dark humour is sooooo true 😊 if you don’t laugh you’ll cry is almost the mantra of the country 😂💚
Missouri USA we LOVE Derry Girls!!!
I am from Sweden, living in LA, and I told my friends in London to watch this show, its brilliant..!
"Derry Girls" is a brilliant show but Derry girls themselves in the 60's, 70's and 80's were a less watered-down version than those of the 1990's. They've always been a phenomenon. The reason the show was such a success is that it had some of the richest of raw materials anywhere with which to work. So much of the best Derry stuff has remained in the city throughout the years than has left it. Derry women are a part of the most unique aspects of the history of Ireland and this show's little window into the lives of those in the forgotten part of Ireland (Derry, Strabane and Donegal) has given everyone who has seen it the feeling that he or she alone has discovered them for themselves. Lisa Mc Gee ........ you really know your stuff.
A great show..being from derry it's spot on. Lisa has done an amazing job!!!!
Love love love this show- A New Yorker here - cast and script phenomenal.
Awesome ! I was in Belfast last Summer. Just love this show. Funny, but more importantly, educates the next generation about a really difficult period of history in that region.
Currently binging this show and working on getting my fam and friends hooked!
So good, so different, so refreshing!
Take it all back. Linguistically they are superb.
Can't get enough of this show....keep watching them over. Impatiently waiting from the US for season 2 !!!
Never heard of till yesterday. Just watched the first episode. Funny af.
This series is a treasure!
Really enjoyed this series. The last ten minutes of the season were amazing. Can hardly wait for the next season.
It's an asset to have the writer on set - Love their team effort :)
Just finished season 1 on Netflix. It’s absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait to watch season 2.
This show is just brilliant, fresh, and fun. Can't wait till Season 3, hope there will be one.
I’m Australian and I bloody LOVE this show!
Big fan of the show. Binged watched it on Netflix. Love 💕
Intellect analysis. Terrific show and interesting to get the process vibe nailed as to how the tone is set and how and why it works so well. Good questions, good answers. And the read through...😆😅🤣😂
funniest show I have ever watched. Brilliant writing
Can't wait for the next season! Love everything about this show. :)
Everyone looks so PROUD and rightly so:) Such an incredibly hilarious show:) I'm hooked:)
¡Me encanta el show! Tan real e irónico. Las actrices y actores son maravillosas/os felicidades. ¡Esperamos muchas temporadas! 👏👏👏❤❤ saludos desde Italia
they all so talented
I just loved this! Fantastic everyone!
I’m from India...Love this show !!!!
Love this show, the only disappointing part about it is that there isn't any more! I've re-watched it several times because I can't get enough of these characters. There just aren't enough episodes!
Amazing interview!!!!
i watched this show about 7x already!! is that good!!! cant wait till season 2 or series two!!
Same here.....can't stop
I need a Step Aerobics video (Jane Fonda style) from Orla
Yes people were ready:) The timing was perfecto:)
Talent and chemistry,.
Nicola wearing a 50:50 ERA badge. Love her for that
Can’t wait for season 3!!!
I love the tableread, they are so talented. And I love that accent, it's so cool:)
I just stumbled into watching it about six weeks ago. It's about the funniest show ever. Being a yank, I don't understand the troubles, but blood-wise, I'm 50% N Irish and I'm proud to be such! I couldn't be happier watching these kids in this show taking over the world like they're doing right now.

This show is MOOOD!
Uncle Colm is my favourite. There’s one in every family. No one wants to answer the phone!
This is a fabulous show!
Nicola's laugh is sooo cute!!!
Best comedy in years, pleased to hear there's a second season!
Favourite show ❤
what a great cast
I'm Irish and I still had to use the subtitles on Netflix!
Lisa Mcgee. Genuis. Please give us more story's. Your so funny. Everyone i knows loves Derry girls. My mom and I always laugh together seeing this. Its the only show my Mom and I like
Orla and Louisa are so different🤯
My home town! Great content!
I think the reason why Louisa gets ignored is because if she isnt dressed as her character she actually looks quite different unlike the other cast members. Same goes with the actress who plays Sister Michael, if she isnt dressed as her character she looks different
I felt bad for the wee old guy sitting in the front, his phone was ringing and he didn't notice. Bless his heart
The guy next to the end left lady needs me lol 😆
I'm Spanish so I thought I wouldn't like this series bc I wouldn't get the humour (its irony is very subtle which is why I loved it, in Spain this kind of humour isn't popular) but,, omg I loved it and I did laugh a lot. At first I thought Irish accent was difficult to understand but I understood it perfectly (except some expressions). In the end I know I can't relate but I totally get why people enjoyed it.
The show while its from a different place ( from the philippines here) is very relatable , since were raised as a catholic so we have the same experience with nuns at our school , as well as the pop culture references from the 90s and the music that was used in the show was very nostalgic and very recognizable. I was quite surprised actually. and thats what made the show for me very enjoyable. I mean apart from learning a bit of irish slang on the side it really is relatable I think.
@@foxfire1345 That's true. I also relate to the Catholic upbringing and the pop era. It's nice that globalisation gave so many people from around the world the chance to watch an amazing show, especially now that everything is messed up.
The music was awesome to with the show
Even in real life Dylan and Louisa are just in the background, they didnt talk much in here. But just like their character they seem closer too in real life
Brilliant show! 💯 We love it in Australia ♥️
I watched one episode with my daughter, who’s nearly 14. I thought she might not get it. (We’re Americans.) Afterwards, she turned to me and said, “Is there more of this?” “Ohhhh yeah,” I said.
Love the Derry girls🍀😇
Omfg I love them so much , they are all extremely talented 💘💓🙌🏻❤️
Louisa is my favorite
This show is fucking hilarious. It won't matter where you're from, funny is funny.
i live in down love the show ❤️
I’m into this show as much as Game of Thrones !!
Just as a point love how she made an effort with the Irish names, but no attempt made at the Welsh Llewellyn :p
21:46 "No Fucking not" LMAO
I always keep an eye on Clare and Orla, they are always doing something when the focus is on someone else 😂
empecé a ver Derry Girls por el trabajo de Nicola, pero honestamente me vi mucho en el personaje de Erin y en el de Orla que inmediatamente se convirtieron en mis favoritas. Ah y el papá de Erin es mi padre favorito jajajaj
Love this show ❤️ It’s hilarious
Tell me i'm not the only one who ships James and Orla?
Nope you’re not alone😁
Nah, they’re the sweetest, they better end up together
no you're not the only one, i ship them too ☺️
