    I have a 5kw and a 8kw, both are identical in all ways (white powder coated all alloy shells, with chrome grill ). They both drink the same at max settings, which is 2 hours per liter of diesel, and both cycle back at the same maximum exchanger temperature (one controller will show it). So i think neither can be any more than 4 - 4.5 kw's at that max consumption, comparing to Eberspacher spec's. I have both set up side by side for testing, and Have run then flat out for hours on end, and burnt thru 30 liters so far between them, as i wanted to know how reliable they are. Only fault so far is one dead glowplug, which i got working again by twisting connections on it,

      at around 500 ml per hour, your performance assessment fits.

      That seems correct. 500ml -> 38MJ/2 released as you burn the diesel in an hour which give a theoretical maximum power of
      (38*10/^6)/2/3600=5278W. In other videos they claim to be able to squeeze 500W from the exhaust gases so not more than 4778W useful heat.

    The watts are determined by the volume of diesel injected.
    Each pulse of the fuel pump injects 0.02 ml of diesel.
    If one or the other is set to the max setting of 5 hz /sec that's 0.1ml of diesel injected per second, to burn.
    The pump injection volume and frequency determines the kw output
    The 2 units do work (5kw and "8kw").
    Both have the identical pump.
    Both have the same maximum impulses per second.
    Both do the same thing.
    It's a pity some companies do this exaggerating as we clients may feel warm, but cheated....

    Just bought a 5kw from amazon, received in time for someones crimbo present, looked at unit clearly marked on side as 4kw yet the same exterior dimensions as your 8 but with a even larger outlet diameter. But it has the older 1-4kw style controller, and the silencer it was advertised as coming with was missing also. If the silencer was present it might have been acceptable if the max fuel could be bumped up into the 5kw range, but omitting the silencer also is just taking the seller taking the p.

    Gee!
    The max fuel delivery rate is adjustable as is the max air flow rate to feed the flame and dissipate the heat so the 2 kw unit definitely has a smaller heat dissipating chassis and fan. When we overdrive any unit, the chassis temp may exceed the safety setting and the thermal sensor will shut it down so the heater would not perform as expected. The fire pot may also have more capacity on the larger unit. Always buy the larger unit (I saw a 12 kw) unless you want to conserve fuel. Maybe the smaller unit runs quieter.

    • @krimke881
      @krimke881 5 років тому +5

      You buy bigger on the theory that its built to last longer, it has more capacity in all terms.
      But what you want is the most efficient. So in this case you can buy the biggest and downtune it to save fuel, or the smallest and change the motor bearing to get it to shut up. In a motorhome, a truck and a van, the 2kw will heat up the space real quick.

    Do you remember how efficient fuel pumps were? in 5kW and 8kW versions ; the pump I know has 22ml/1000 cycles ; 22 *5Hz *1000 /3600(sec/h) = 400 ml. ; 400 ml * 0,83 kg/l ON =0,330 kg/h ; 0,33 *43MJ/kg / 3,6MJ = 3,93kW. To sum up, if you have a 35ml/1000 pump with a frequency of 6.5 Hz, you will get a power of 8kW. The most important question in this test: what fuel pump do you have?

    i bought a couple 8000kw heaters price was same as 5000kw. 8000kw is 27,000 btu. One liter of diesel has 34,000 btu. Assuming you get 100% efficiency. You lose btus through exhaust gas going out. The fuel pumps in these heaters pump .6 or so liters per hour. So no way they are putting out 8000kw. 5000 would be closer to the truth imo. That being said I still love my heaters. Put out enough heat for my garage. Putting two in my garage and one in my house in case nat gas furnace and heater take a crap. Wont keep house warm enough like some people like in winter. But it will keep pipes in house from freezing and livable until furnace can be repaired. Going to scavenge heat from exhaust to get as much btus as possible. Air coming out to heat space is 170-180F and exhaust puts out 200-210f from one foot away from each. You cant keep hand in front of output at one foot for very long.

    If the 5 kw is dimensionally the same as the 8 kw, the difference is in something else. I suspect that the amount of fuel injected into the 8 kw is much much more. The higher heat production comes at a price though!
    Pumping more fuel into the combustion chamber will decrease the thermal efficiency of the thing i.e. More heat will go out the exhaust pipe.
    this device has a thermal sweet spot. The sweet spot is @ max heat output and @ Minimum fuel consumption.
    By injecting more fuel, the heat output increases a bit but not so much as you would expect in respect of the additional fuel consumption. A bigger part of the heat will be evacuated via the exhaust pipe I'm affraid.
    This can be explained with the thermal transport through the aluminum cylinder and cooling fins!
    At the sweet spot the thermal transportation ( convection) is optimal and fuel combustion is/the least. If you go beyond/above the sweet spot, you will see that the sweet spot itself will not shift with the same ratio as the additional fuel burned.
    My advice:
    run the device on or near the sweet spot.

    2kw, 5kw,, 8kw??? does that mean the heat that's put out into the room you're trying to heat? or the total heat produced - room heat + the heat lost out of the exhaust??

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  4 роки тому +2

      Yes. It's more likely they used the fuel consumption to work out the KW rather than the actual amount transferred into heating a room.

    • @gernotvetter324
      @gernotvetter324 4 роки тому +3

      That's a good question
      but if you run a 2 kw electric heater, will 2 kw heating power come out at the front?
      my 8 kw heater consumes about 730 - 760 ml of diesel at full load
      The exhaust gas loss is reduced to around 60 ° C due to the air / water heat exchanger. So the heat mostly stays in the room / water
      the output power of an electric heater varies with the mains voltage. however, i have no idea how stable your 110 volt supply is.
      With our 230 volt supply, fluctuations of -10 volt are possible. So then less "energy - output" of an electric heater
      With diesel heaters, the current / voltage hardly plays any role, if the flame burns, it burns automatically
      but what plays a major role with d-heaters is the intake temperature ..... cold air of the same amount contains more oxygen than warm air
      so your question is very difficult to answer
      in principle, it does not matter whether 2 kw of energy is released from electricity into heat or 2 kw of fossil fuels.

      I agree:
      Diesel energy = exhaust waste heat + produced usable air heat
      8 kW = 2 kW + 6 kW -> 2 kW heater (heat exchanger with smallest vins and smallest fan diameter)
      8 kW = 5 kW + 3 kW -> 5 kW heater (heat exchanger with medium vins and largest fan diameter)
      8 kW = 8 kW + 0 kW -> 8 kW heater (heat exchanger with largest vins and largest fan diameter)
      Temperature of air vent vs exhaust pipe should be compared.
      Fuel consumption will be the same 8 kW on the high setting for all models, according to this hypothesis.
      The prediction is that the 8 kW will have the coldest exhaust gasses, while the 2 kW heater will have the hottest exhaust gasses.
      And you could repeat this experiment for the low setting.
      I think that the fuel pump rate is constant in either the low setting or the high setting, while the ECU controls and varies, the fan speed for optimal combustion. I wonder if that's true?

    I don't think any of them are 8kw. The fuel consumption is .64lh. the problem is a liter of diesel is 10kw so even if it were 100% efficient that's only 6.4kw worth of energy available. More likely it's 78% efficient and putting out around 5kw worth of heat. Classic chinese marketing way over spec things and hope no one can do math.

      Still a bit of pot luck. If you get one reasonably priced get it from Amazon, then the seller has to abide by Amazon's return policy if it doesn't work. Test it works before you fit it. For a big van like that I'd go with the 8KW (the larger of the two heater sizes).

    Hi David, great videos, great help, thank you. Would you be able to set up a 5 and an 8kw heater, run them at the same pump and fan speed and see if there is a difference in the cabin air outlet temperature? Also see if the exhaust temperature is different between the two heaters at the same pump and fan speed?

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  3 роки тому +8

      Hey Chris. There isn't really such a thing as a 5KW or an 8KW heater. Only two sizes exist and they are physically different sized heaters. The smaller body ofter referred to as the 2KW and the larger the 5KW. I've seen the heaters marked all the way up to 12KW and it's nothing but numbers printed on the outside of the box. The 5-8KW heaters are exactly the same and both will output the same heat if you set the settings to be the same. So don't get scammed if anyone is selling an 8KW and charging more for it.

    • @chrisball666
      @chrisball666 3 роки тому +1

      Hi David, I saw a video from the guy, John, in Australia and whilst he said the same as you, his video showed that the 8kw heater had more fins on the exchanger than the 5kw. I wondered if this would increase the heat transfer rate and increase the delta T. However, since then, I've found a video by the same guy, running an 8kw at 5.5Hz and whilst the delta T was up by about 4 degrees compared to the 5 at same pump speed, he was concerned about casing over temp. So throttled back. So I guess the heat transfer is marginally improved but the physical size of the exchanger limits the heat it can safely deliver. Thanks again for the videos, much appreciated. Stay safe, Chris

      When I get into the "advanced" menu using the 1688 code, I can set the Hertz to 0.8 at the lowest. The stock Hertz for highest is 5.4 but I haven't see how high it can actually go as even at 5.4Hz it's putting out an incredible amount of heat!
      For fan speed RPM, the lowest mine will go is 1500, and the factory set for High is 4300 (but I think you can go higher than that, but again I haven't adjusted it higher since it's alot of airflow)
      I've even done energy usage with my advanced battery monitor! :-) at 1.4hz (the factory set for low) it uses just barely over 0.5A, on HIGH (5.4Hz) it uses just over 3A. When I set the Hertz to 0.8 I didn't notice much of an energy decrease, since the fan speed was still at the lowest I could set it at (1500RPM)
      One thing I did notice that when I set it to 1.1Hz or lower, one of the red bars on the controller display went away, meaning it was running cooler than at 1.4Hz (which shows all the bars)

      I'm making a comparison to other things that aren't as straight forward as one dimension may indicate.
      I.e. Just because two of the heaters are the same external size, doesn't necessarily mean they are the same output.

    Question. Is the orifice size the same between the 5Kw and the 8Kw? A slightly larger orifice would indicate more fuel is burned, thus a larger rated heater.

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  3 роки тому

      Which orifice? More fuel can be burner by adjusting the settings. As that's the only difference.

    • @evelbsstudio
      @evelbsstudio 2 роки тому

      You can change the flow rate of the fuel pump in advanced settings, the thing is you would want more airflow because if it runs rich you will get more carbon deposits

    David, I have a VW T25 so fairly small camper. Can you suggest which heater to buy? Can you put an affiliate link please?

      We fitted one of the larger heaters (5-8-10-12KW) to a Transit and I've been told it's too hot. It might be different if you are camping at -20 in an uninsulated van though.

      David McLuckie quieter than the 2kw though?

      David McLuckie .. Blast - the ‘8’ kw has been ordered already! Suppose I can just turn down the temp on it so I don’t get too hot? Or use the thermostat?

    • @Retiredkiwi

      my 8's and 5's(have 2 of each now) are identical weights and components, and measurements, and heat outputs, only difference was one 5 kw came factory set to a max of 5.5hz (approx, was 2 years ago), which i reset to 8hz in programming - (mine are 1688 for code), and i used 1.5hz as minimum/2450rpm i think - at sea level, and run very clean, with display in the red bars even at low output(settings from my notes back then, i think that's where i ended up leaving them) - i also tried a larger pump for a while, but could never get it to run clean and reliably thru out output range.
      Fairly sure the 2kw has smaller dimensions (length width and outlet diameter) . i expect weights will vary slightly, depending on if its a full metal shell/body (like all of mine), or some parts or all of shell are plastic.

      There isn't an 8KW. Only two sizes. Easy to tell apart. Small one has the inlet/exhaust in the middle, larger one the inlet/exhaust if off to one end.

  • @simonwass6315

    Is there such a thing as an 8kw? Fuel consumption figures on most sales pages show 5kw max (0.6l/hr) despite what rating they advertise - so the 8 is just a 5 that maybe you can overfuel?

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  3 роки тому

      Negative. Only marketing. I've seen them stickered as 10KW and 12KW. While technically you can overfuel, you'll waste more fuel than it can burn properly.

    you will find the 5kw is the max the 8kw can pull
    ie ur 8kw is infact a 5 kw

    Would one of these heat a 8mx6m insulated tin shed or would I be better investing in a wood burner?

      Yes it will heat it. Not sure what would be cheaper for you to run or if you're concerned with the convenience of each method of heating.

    Are the glow plug and fuel pump all the same? Bought one mistakenly, rated at 24v, changed the setting to 12 volts and got 03 code. fuel pump read 22-24v. wondering if I should change the glow plug to match 12v and change fuel pump to 12-22v as well. What do you think?
