Portable Chinese Diesel Heater - Hcalory HC-A04 12V 5-8kw Review - This Thing Could Of Killed Me..!

  • Today I review and test the all new Hcalory HC-A04 Portable Trolley Diesel Heater.
I stripped it down only to find many dangerous faults.
Hcalory sent this portable diesel air heater to me, free of charge, in return for an unbiased, honest review and test.
The faults that I found were dangerous and very concerning.
However, once I put them right, I found this Chinese Diesel Heater to be a very good and efficient source for a portable, trolley style air heater.
However, it is marketed as a dual voltage unit, 12v DC and 240v AC, which is definitely not the case. Which we see in the video!
Essentially this is a portable trolley diesel heater with everything nicely compacted into a toolbox on wheels!
With everything pre-built inside the casing, including the fuel tank and pump.
It also has a very good smartphone app, which works very well and I like very much.
Adding to the convenience and control of operation greatly.
Despite the initial faults this unit was delivered with and once I had corrected them, it worked faultlessly and performed beyond my expectations.

I haven't heard back from Hcalory at all since this video!!!
I noticed another reviewer, David McLuckie, also found similar and equally dangerous faults as me.
So there's definitely a problem somewhere along their production line.!
But, hopefully all the faults have been addressed now and their shipping these out corrected and safe.

The cord on the plug the black box in line would be the drop down voltage to 12v, I’ve bought one of these heaters I’ve had it for 4years never had an issue think there great, also yes I did upgrade the diesel feed pipe to a more better one, but apart from that yea there good, 👍

    • @TheWrinklyNomads
      @TheWrinklyNomads  11 місяців тому

      Hi Peter,
Without a doubt the 12v system works if used with the AC/DC stepdown transformer. The concerning part is that a IEC socket can and usually does only accommodate a 230V AC cord, line a kettle lead and isn't good, safe practice to mix the 12v and 230V.
The burner unit itself is a very good bit of kit. It's just, in this case, what they have tried do with it.
Now I have corrected these 'faults', it's ran perfectly and I very pleased with it.

For some reason the Chinese have adopted the IEC C14 connector for the 12v systems, I've seen on some units the 12v supply outlet using them, I see a few design flaws, The Exhaust needs to be at least 3" from surfaces unless shield wrapped, The fuel pump needs to be installed on an Angle or ideally upright, They fail otherwise as they rely on diesel to lubricate and seal the piston, But definitely the IEC Socket wouldn't pass any British standards compliance for a 12v supply, the ECU On these are 12/24v

If the power adapter doesn't have a standard 13A plug , it looks like the fuse is missing!! - 2:08

The burner itself is very good. A tried and tested unit, it's what they have done with the rest of it that was a shambles!

If there is no air filter provided, you will need to install one. The burn chamber with the glow plug and atomizer screen need to be kept clean. You will also need to filter the fuel before the pump. The cleaner, the longer it will burn clean and longer intervals between servicing.
You need to relocate the fuel pump because it should not be run horizontal. It needs to be mounted t a 45 degree angle. And as long as you're at it, replace that green fuel line, it's junk. It can start a fire!
No you don't plug 220v into the unit. It's only for 12 volt. You will need a step down transformer from 220 to 12v.

13:30 The reason for this is that some of their 12V transformers have an IEC lead tacked onto it. (At the 12V output.) Someone must have thought: "Hey, these IEC leads and connectors are cheaper than proper 12V ones, we'll just use that instead." (And hope people don't plug 120V/240V there. 😆) Don't think you know stuff until you look inside!!!

      Hi,
I believe the elevation is changed automatically on this model. Although I didn't test that out.
The fuel line is all performing how it should do, with no issues and no problems. I didn't expect any problems as I run all fuel line like this and it always works.
The air filter issue was solved by a bit a fiddling about and retro fitting the standard air filter that comes with most heater installation kits.
Shouldn't have to do all this as it was a new heater that was sent to me for review!
But, all in all, heater now runs perfectly.👍

Are you assuming that you are supposed to supply that socket with 230v? What do the instructions say?
Trading Standards wouldn't allow a 230v socket that can't be supplied with 230v
That non fused plug doesn't need a fuse. Don't you remember removing the 20amp fuse inside?
I watched another video reviewing these heaters and he fitted an LED bulb on the inside to illuminate the fuel level display.

The burner unit themselves are very good, the rest was a shambles.
Regarding the 230V, the instruction do indicate connecting to the 12v terminals via the power brick configuration, but the plug was a crappy unfused one, BS 1363 requires the use of a 3-wire grounded and fused plug for all connections to the power mains, so your right, definitely not allow here.

      Hi Jeff,
That tank seems to work pretty well.
I don’t fill it right up to the top anyway, but when you do move the unit the fuel will go over the filler cap level.
So far it has sealed correctly and there’s no leaks.
The cap has no breather valve so I also loosen now and then to prevent causing a vacuum inside the tank.

IMHO no product that controls a combustible liquid and it's actuall combustion should need modifying by the end user to be safe.
Poor piping, incorrect pump placement, if the fuel tank is over half full it leaks from the breather in the cap when you stand it up to move it on the wheels and the fuel pools on the bottom tray where the hot exhaust is, if you should plug in a 240v kettle lead the 12v power poles are now live at 240V AC, let's hope mo one touches them or even worse if there's a battery connected when this happens you now have a boiling container of hydrochloric acid producing hydrogen ready to explode, hydrogen explosions are bad enough but add in the possibility of steaming hot acid flying everywhere and what you have there should be titled the numpty killer, not a diesel heater 👌

      Hi James
At first glance you’d think that, but it’s actually the correct way around.
The flow must go into the bowl section of the filter first, that way any sediment can be clearly seen.
So sediment capture first then through the filter matrix.
The other way round would result in a clogged filter without seeing any sediment.
      Hope this helps
