I might be late to the party, but I’m catching up. Thanks
Not to be a hipster, if those even exist anymore, but I really have been watching Paul Harrell since he's only had 50k subscribers. It feels so good to see Paul get the attention and respect he deserves. Hardest working guy in the UA-cam gun community.
A Paul Harrell video could never be to long. He could record himself every second he is on a range and do 3 hour long lectures and I would view it all. His abilities speak for themselves. With all the training he has received, given and all the knowledge other people have poured into him on top of all his practical experience this man has risen to the very top of the expert rank! I have just one thing to say to Paul. Shoot when you want to explain everything you want to talk when you want to you have my strict attention!
My father was a paratrooper in WWII, he told me stories of at the end when the Germans were surrendering, they would put the guns in a pile as they walked by. Dad said after things settled that people would grab the guns and shoot one after another at a tree until it went down, so you CAN take a tree down with guns.
Yeah, I got a good laugh out of that. Back in 1991, I bought a new Marlin 1895 SS 45-70. I picked up a box of Winchester factory ammo 300 grain hollow point to test it out. I put a target on a pine tree my father had knocked down on his property only a week or so before, a foot or better in diameter. I put 10 rounds thru that target at 25 yards. When I took the target down, those 10 rounds had chewed halfway thru the trunk. After that, I told my father "If you can't stop something with 5 rounds from this gun, you better call in an airstrike".
@@mitchelloates9406 wow, you better need to know what's not only behind someone when shooting that, but what's behind What's behind that someone to shoot behind (kinda like deagle owners say they can fire someone hiding on a fridge on their neighbor's house)

Ignore the hate mail Paul. I love the comparison videos and want BOTH the realistic and fair. If forced to choose I would much rather see comparisons with bullet weights common to the caliber like 125 and 240 as examples for the 357 and 44. Then the cherry on top would be the “fair” compared. Thanks for all you do, I have learned a ton from you and enjoyed the learning. And again, if someone has constructive feedback that’s fine, but IGNORE THE HATERS CAUSE A HATERS JUST GONNA HATE! 😂
Don't ever let anyone tell you these videos are tedious. All the extreme level of detail is why I subscribe in the first place. The explanations on this channel are always clear, precise and accurate and they don't leave a ton of information out like nearly every other channel. There's a lot of fun shooting channels that are just about watching stuff blow up and seeing ridiculous guns, but almost none that cover information so in depth like this one.
Great video! Thank you for the follow up to the 44/357 pistol comparison. The wonderful thing about both of these cartridges is the versatility, and even more so if you're hand loading.
I think I've said this. Caleb is a talented shooter, and a fucking idiot. It is too bad he came after Paul for no reason. I guess he was aiming for his foot, 50/50 all six rounds bullseye, in less than 14 minutes. That's impressive considering the pain involved.

The fact that the meat target jumped off the table after being hit by two of the 44 mag rounds says a lot about the stopping power of the 44. I still prefer the .357 though... Well at least my shoulder does lol. Another great video Paul, thanks!

He also teaches that the hand is guided by the barrel/side of the frame so the hand will always hit the rod parallel to the barrel. That guy was just trying to get attention or found a target in his downward spiral. He chose poorly.

@@exothermal.sprocket You are absolutely right. I was blasting stumps as a child of 8 with dynamite from the local hardware store. Which I would walk in and buy without even having my dad with me. Now I can't even buy it. Firearms take a background check, even ammo in some places does. I still have a rifle bought from Sears through their mail order catalog, that was mailed to my family's door. Yet you hear about many times more murderers and the like. It is that the very idea of being responsible for your own actions has been removed from the general public over time. Just look at parents today and TV programming. Parent of the past would teach their children what they could and could not watch. And the children knew if they violated it, they would get a spanking at the very least. Modern parents are just the opposite. How many time have you heard a parent say "I don't think that should be on TV, because I don't want my child to see it"? If you don't want your family to see it turn it off, watch what your children see and act accordingly. Do not expect everyone else to filter what they can watch because you are too lazy to watch you own child. This is just a small example of how self absorbed and lazy people have gotten. How they expect everyone else to do their job for them. It's truly sickening.

I will never forgive myself for being a cheap ass fool, a few months ago there was one for sale near me(Ontario, Canada) they guy wanted 700 or best offer, when my offer was not enough he asked for just $50 more than my offer of $550, I still want to kick myself in the ass whenever I see one mentioned, I have wasted 50 bucks on many, many stupider things since then, lesson learned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to own one of those Rugers. Saw one for sale in my state (online) back in 2012 for $400. It was nearly a three hour drive away... would have been well worth it in hindsight. Can’t seem to find them as often and the prices are all above $800 in my experience.
I used to own two Rossi model 92 carbines. One was .357 and the other was .44 magnum. I hand load for all my rifles and have for many years. After a few years I sold the .44 magnum and kept the .357 mag. I harvested wildlife with both firearms and just liked the .357 above the .44. For my use the .44 was a much more close in rifle than the .357. Now I own and use a bolt action .357 and neither 125 gr. bullets or 158 gr. bullets. When using the .44 from a bench rest I found the barrel of the .44 was to thin and would heat rapidly causing wandering bullets. A thicker barrel would have helped this at the expense of more weight. A guide friend of mine bought the .44 to use as a camp gun and it fills that bill quite well.
Hey Paul, thanks for all you do! Your videos are very informative and well presented. I have learned a few things from you and I'm 64 and been around guns since I was about 10. I never find your presentations "tedious" , more like "thorough." Keep up the good work.

I have had 44 magnum handguns all my life and coming out of a rifle it makes a big difference. Shooting steel plates it makes a big welt compared to coming out of a handgun. I put a red dot on it and it is amazingly accurate.
Craig MacKay Hi Craig The 30-30 has very nice ballistics and is a very nice cartridge to have a lever action in. You may consider do you have a handgun in either of the other cartridges or if you would like to it is nice to have a handgun in the same cartridge as your rifle. I reload for my 44 rifle and handgun and it is very cost-effective.
@@craigmackay7691 my thought would be to get the .357, soft shooting less expensive ammo, more available ammo in stores if that's important to you, and more capacity. Since you have the 30 30 it would be more different. But honestly I want both soooooooooo

Hey Paul, great content as always. A request on a future video: a repeat of AK vs AR but with 5.45 vs 5.56 this time, preferably with “military” rounds (7N6 vs MK262 or similar). With all the 5.45 guns coming out this year from palmetto and others I think it would be very relevant. Thanks for considering
Thank you Paul, I really appreciate this comparison. One aspect you did not discuss in your summary that I thought was significant in your demonstration was the damage to the meat tissue. After watching this two part series I have elected to go with the .357 primarily because of the cheap .38 special and less damage to meat tissue for deer hunting. Thank you again!

Dana Herron yes and yes! I actually own a couple of black powder blunderbusses, but they'd cost a fortune to get up and running. They've been in my family since they were new, still got the receipt! Used to have a beautiful pair of duelling pistols, but they got stolen years ago
I’ve only recently started watching this channel, and honestly I have no idea why I hadn’t been watching it more before now. I’ve been binge watching the heck out of it for the last couple of weeks, and it seems like it’s gained around 20k new subscribers in that time so obviously I’m not the only one that has done that. I’ve watched various other gun channels over the last 6 or so years (most of which I’ve quit watching) and this is by far the most informative while simultaneously entertaining channel I’ve seen yet. I might be late to the party, but I’m catching up. Thanks
Might wanna cheak out forgotten weapons and in range if you like this kinda thing also mark and sam after work they do insane long range shooting
Welcome to the family sir!!
Welcome
Not to be a hipster, if those even exist anymore, but I really have been watching Paul Harrell since he's only had 50k subscribers. It feels so good to see Paul get the attention and respect he deserves. Hardest working guy in the UA-cam gun community.
Also, welcome to the club!
“No matter what we do, we’re gonna get a lot of hate mail.” Welcome to the internet Paul, where the dumpster fire that is 2020 truly feels at home.

@@juckey2730 probably the best way to put it...
Yeah but😂😂 did you see that tree fall down ??
A Paul Harrell video could never be to long. He could record himself every second he is on a range and do 3 hour long lectures and I would view it all. His abilities speak for themselves. With all the training he has received, given and all the knowledge other people have poured into him on top of all his practical experience this man has risen to the very top of the expert rank! I have just one thing to say to Paul. Shoot when you want to explain everything you want to talk when you want to you have my strict attention!
No One: You cant chop down a tree with a gun
Paul: Hold my chronograph
Timber.
My father was a paratrooper in WWII, he told me stories of at the end when the Germans were surrendering, they would put the guns in a pile as they walked by. Dad said after things settled that people would grab the guns and shoot one after another at a tree until it went down, so you CAN take a tree down with guns.
Just really wanted to make sure that tree stayed down lol
I knew what the outcome of this test was going to be before I even clicked to view this video. Yet I watched it anyways because Paul Harrell is our super cool dad, uncle or grandpa figure that has all the cool endless information and stories .
Keep it up Paul love you and what you do!
Same. Knew it, watched anyway.
You know a channel is great when you literally drop what you're doing to watch it. That's what this Canadian Forces member did lol
Paul speaks the universal language of guns. 😄
@FREN LOL I'm on deployment, using my free time to watch gun videos such as this lol
I’m so glad I found this channel. I’m not even really into carbines, I just love this dudes “long and tedious” presentation, his clear experience, and how he addresses his followers and critics. Keep it up Paul! You had me reeled in with the pandemic gun buying videos

Waking up to a Paul Harrell video; now this is life!
The .44 Mag throwing "lung tissue" on to the camera lens that is 2-3 feet away......very prophetic..........
"Love the haters... hate the hate." Nah. Heck with that. Screw the haters. All your presentations have a ton of value, Paul. Thanks for your channel.
Malcontents: "The video is tedious!"
Paul Harrell: "Allow me to introduce you to the new technology of fast-forward."
It's not just for Beta-Max anymore.
@Terry Bruce don't be too hard professional complainers have to have something to do.

UA-cam videos can be played at 1.25 and 1.5 with little loss of fidelity, and the Shatneresque . . . pauses vanish.
@Terry Bruce You do realize that was a joke in defense of Paul Harrell, right?
I was agreeing with him, not the malcontents. 😂

I think I've said this. Caleb is a talented shooter, and a fucking idiot. It is too bad he came after Paul for no reason. I guess he was aiming for his foot, 50/50 all six rounds bullseye, in less than 14 minutes. That's impressive considering the pain involved.
Strangely, neither do the rest of us.....
Thank you for standing out in the rain to bring us this content. You're videos are very informative and in my opinion, great aid in making decisions on what calibers and platforms someone should consider when taking their application into account. Thanks Paul!

Imagine being the poor sap who skipped through the chronograph segment and missed Paul cutting down a tree with a .44 Mag. tsk tsk tsk.
The fact that the meat target jumped off the table after being hit by two of the 44 mag rounds says a lot about the stopping power of the 44. I still prefer the .357 though... Well at least my shoulder does lol. Another great video Paul, thanks!
skipped online class to watch this; ended up feeling like taking a class. Love all the input Mr. Harrel puts into making his comparisons as objective as possible; it's like gun shcool

He also teaches that the hand is guided by the barrel/side of the frame so the hand will always hit the rod parallel to the barrel. That guy was just trying to get attention or found a target in his downward spiral. He chose poorly.

Clearing trees with a .44. Sounds like fun!
Almost as fun as clearing trees with C4. 😉
@@michaelblacktree Yes, but not as fast as with C4. I still prefer the instant forest remover the military knows as a claymore.
If this was my dad's childhood, he's be clearing stuff with dynamite he bought from the local hardware. So what's happened? Either the population has become more dumb and dangerous over time, or the DEEP STATE has MADE people more dumb and dangerous, as well as dependent over time. You be the judge.
The 357 weakened the tree first.

Nicely done. I have a Marlin 1894CS and always wondered what kind of velocities it generated. You answered that question quite conclusively.
I have a Marlin 1894C in 357 magnum, absolutely love it! Just bought a 686-6 to go with it. Love the performance the carbines provide, especially for the minimal weight!
I wish Ruger would bring back their .44 mag. semi-auto carbine. That was a handy little gun and accurate too.
I wish they had one in 357 too.
Agreed, a friend has one and I've shot it a bunch.
There was a tube mag and rotary mag version?

The comparisons you make, using different ammo, your props, explanations/conjecture, etc. are extremely helpful in helping me choose what's best for me and my personal needs. Well done, sir!
Yup, I'm getting a 44 mag lever action.
Jose Vazquez I have a Henry Lever action big boy they are awesome and the 44 out of a rifle is a lot more powerful than you think. I have had 44 magnum handguns all my life and coming out of a rifle it makes a big difference. Shooting steel plates it makes a big welt compared to coming out of a handgun. I put a red dot on it and it is amazingly accurate.
I've got the problem, having.30-30 do I get a .357 or a .44 next

I agree. I’ve always thought 5.56 was much better but never actually done enough research to know if it is
Thank you Paul, I really appreciate this comparison. One aspect you did not discuss in your summary that I thought was significant in your demonstration was the damage to the meat tissue. After watching this two part series I have elected to go with the .357 primarily because of the cheap .38 special and less damage to meat tissue for deer hunting. Thank you again!
Glad to see you filled your lumber harvest tag so early in the day. I know what a bear it is to bag one of those Oregon evergreens near dusk. Blend right into the forest...

I'm a completely different shooter than Mr. Harrell. He said in one of his videos that he only owns one bolt action rifle. I only own one handgun. Paul, you're never going to get hate mail from me. I appreciate the lengths you go to to make things realistic and fair. 👍👍 You're alright.
I weep for those in the audience that need Paul to show them that 44 mag is more powerful than 357 Mag. I'm still hoping for 50BMG vs the meat target.
Was it not more: a 357 will do unless you're in pre-butchering?
Paul "...so after recovering the remnants of the meat target from the ground, we can see that the single round split both the porkchop pectoral and ribs in half, emptied the bag of oranges 'lung tissue', broke each rib on the back before flinging it out, and was stopped by a shattered granite chunk a foot and a half deep into the berm backstop after having successfully penetrated all 40 layers of fleece."
Owning both, I knew the obvious outcome, however it was still interesting to see what you know converted to actual damage. Next for me , 44 mag vs. 45-70.
Fun episode. Had no idea there could be that much velocity overlap between those rounds. Fascinating. Both excellent rounds.

I’m a big fan of the 357 magnum, in fact it’s my favorite round. That said it has no where near the power that the 44 mag has.
All so I agree with your advise on the leverevolution ammo. Killed many hogs with a 357 rifle. I like hornaday bullets (especially in 45-70) just not there 357 magnum leverevolution version
Seems more like a self defense round than a hunting round.
If anything, this video hit home the point that I'm missing a lever-action rifle or three in my life.......
I like that you show the chronograph footage, Paul. Showing one's work is always a good thing even if it can be repetitive.
This is funny, I just rewatched the .357 Mag vs the .44 Mag revolver video from a few years ago last night. 😂

Thank you for standing in the rain for so long to chronograph all those rounds. I appreciate your attention to detail. Your channel is excellent.
I would say that either caliber carbine would be more than adequate in a self defense situation, especially against a meat target.
Yes but what if that meat target happens to be wearing kevlar or plates? :/ Certainly wont penetrate a plate but maybe cause kinetic damage?
