the motherboard is very clean, it is definitely worth bringing it back to life. Thank you dr. Chris on time and for doing so much to help. you are the best amiga expert 😊
Another save! And we get some, brief, singing! More singing! :)
I have a Australian Issue 1200HD/40 it is a Rev 1.D.4, it has a Shield with Plastic backing under it, when New, it had a Shield on top, but the CSA 12 Gauge & SCSI, plus a Larger Drive saw that Top Shield in the Junk Pile, @ the time.. My A1200 needs the same TLC, I hope I am up to the job .. Chris you inspire Amiga Owners to do some work, Thanks
loved the dial tone
It's so great the effort you go to fo keep these great machines alive! Other than the A500 they didn't make enough of these machines for the retro market today! Keep the few going!
I really liked the A1200 Video, but just 1 thing, I would offer to send you a 48MP "Go-Pro" Clone I have, and a mount to show Overhead views of Work area, Instead of Camera Adjustments, a Switch or Picture in Picture. As I think your Video's will be around for Many Years as people will need to do the repairs, so a nice clear overhead of your work, would be nice, You are a Legendary Amiga Owner & Repairer, thanks Chris, you are building the Guides that will keep Amiga's running ..
Yep we have shielding in the UK. Always have
UK A600s generally did not come with the top shielding from the factory, but always had the bottom. UK A1200s always have both sets of shielding as far as I know, unless the top has been removed and not replaced of course.
Nice work Chris, some epic work. Another A1200 saved
Both of my UK A1200's have RF shields. You make recapping look so easy - Thanks for a great video as usual Chris! invested in a Lorena Bobbitt to perform some recapping soon...
Nice work! Now awaiting the entertainment from the inevitable rants around cutting the capacitors!
Yet another excellent video, Chris. Keep up the Good Work.
i dont know who told you that in the uk we dont have the shielding but they were lying we do . ive had my amiga from new it had bottom shielding then thin plastic and even a top shield with tabs on and a little extra little port shield so 3 pieces of metal in total 1 large flat on the bottom then a big piece curvy then a little piece they all connect with little metal tabs that you bend into place . nice video m8 well done .
Amazing work sir!
Ur a professional Chris.
My original PAL A1200 had shielding, as did my A500+ before that so did my friend's A1200 and other friend's A600.
The shielding was there in UK units that i have owned and seen but it was just usual to not put back the top shielding if you modded the machine.
Especially the A1200 as people tended to squeeze in a 3.5" hd leaving no room for the top shielding.
Great channel 👍🏻
Mine absolutely has the bottom shield.
Chris, you may have to add an "ankle cam" in the future so you do not have keep reminding your viewers that you are grounded. :D
Nice job!!! I just remove the keyboard connector myself, which is a personal preference, does not take very long to remove and put it back on. I actually need to open up all my toys because some I have recapped but those all have notes inside while others have them outside as well so I have to add notes to the outside of the cases better to place notes in both areas.
The same me , Mr Chris 😅, tnx for video.🎉
My A1200 has the full shielding. I've owned it from new. Nottingham uk here
Great video, thank you! 🙂
Great video thanks!
Like they say on The Munsters, a "Nothin' Muffin." 😀
the ones with no shield are probably ones that have been modified mine used to spend alot of time with the top 2 shields off as i was always messing around in there ... and the lid would just sit over the case not clipped in on an angle so i could get in there on the fly . now mine is all buttoned down as ive got the cf card for a hdd and the indivision mk3 for hdmi out so i cant get my top shield on as well but with the new case it has really good tight fit as the case has the brass inserts for the screw holders . south uk
Compliment as always! ... in addition to the skill there is also sympathy in your videos. For my 2nd recap of a1200 I used your method of twisting the capacitors to remove them plus a little variation and it worked great without breaking any leads. In the 1st recap to remove the capacitors with hot air of a friend of mine, the 2 10uF traces behind the keyboard were lifted. Then I fixed it , Great keep it up! 😄
I DO NOT TWIST< I CUT
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration yes I know that in this video you used the "cut" method I was talking about the previous video where you removed the capacitors by pressing them down and with a slight twist to the left and right and finally I unsoldered the easily cut legs
Not me i always cut
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I saw it here ua-cam.com/video/P0MU1a5xPQk/v-deo.html at minute 5.15 but you're right you didn't twist it I remembered it wrong, I made a mix in my head of 2 videos 😀
I don't know why people don't use 2 soldering irons... :D I take less time than cut or twist, and there is less harm/stress to the pads. flux is essencial... and correct temp... but I take them out easily...
I have no problem to use both hands independently. hahahaha
I had an reamiga, that didn't want to work... I removed every one of the passives like this (two irons... also works for resistors and etc...) retested them all... found an broke resistor. :D and ... it was that ... broken from factory.
I have 3 amiga 1200s and all have shielding and I'm from the UK, not sure why there wouldn't be.
i have taken loads of 1200,s apart here in uk and all have shielding and plastic whoever said they dont have any talks crap someone obviously took it out.
That was awesome to watch! ❤ I just went through restoring my ol' A1200 (PAL, Switzerland, with a Blizzard 1230 Mk IV). Added new keys, new case.
Kind of afraid to do a recap though since i'm fairly new to soldering. Mine has a peculiar problem that whenever DF0 reads/write from/to a disk i get screen corruptions. At first i thought it may be the drive itself, but the same behaviour happens with a Gotek.
Any possible clues what the issue may be? Everything else works fine.
Top shielding??
I brought my childhood PAL A1200 over to Canada with me and it's fully shielded. Top and Bottom. What are those yellow patch wires for? My 1200 has none... do I need them? After market fixes?
early rev fixes from factory
My Danish A1200 was shielded as well. Still got the shielding, but moved it over to a Checkmate case. Re. When you debraid/desolder with the braid, which temperature do you use Chris? Do you used braid that is already fluxed?
4 million kelvin. jk - I run my Hakko at 600F or 315C for regular, and 750F or 400C for tough ground planes. I also use soft solder too so that has a lower melting point
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Thanks! I had issues getting my braid to suck up almost anything. It looked so easy on all the videos I saw, so did not get why I had so much trouble with it. Could be the brain was just too old or so, but I saw a tip to put some flux on the braid itself, and it could help a lot. To be safe I got some new braid as well. I make so few mistakes so I almost never use it….. :D j/k, I am getting back into soldering, but mainly the part year been doing a bit of this and that. Biggest project currently was to assemble a SixtyClone C64 replica, an a Retro Chip Tester Pro. Next will be a Denise board / A500+Replica. Just getting a little SMD experience first, and sucking any and all soldering tips to me, that I can get.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration p.s. Thanks for the awesome videos you make. Combining great work with humor is double the joy to watch. :)
Practice on old pc cards. Not amigas!
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Haha of course. The practicing happens on smd practice boards bought off amazon. :) As well as a number of small DIY kits etc. Not gonna practice on important stuff as Amigas! :)
I have the same soldering station, but obviously not the same skills as I couldn't get the RF modulator off and was worried about overheating the pads. Just curious - what temp do you use to do that kind of work?
4 million kelvin. - I run my Hakko at 600F or 315C for regular, and 750F or 400C for tough ground planes. I also use soft solder too so that has a lower melting point
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration thanks so much! I'll have to give it another try sometime. I need to feed a cable through that space for my Indivision scandoubler so that I can close the case.
Chris, was the RF modulator caused bad video output or capacitors or both?
i think it was a little of both, modulator does nothing anymore. unless you have a old tube tv, which we dont, nor want.
Hello, nice video. Could You tell me a type of monitor? I have Nec 19" LCD1970NXp and the picture is not 100% Thank You
This is a dell u2410-f
Hi. I have a Amiga 1200 that is showing a black screen (sometimes). The LED is than dimming. But it is starting somtimes without problems with a full bright Power LED. I dont know what the problem is. After a recap the problem is still there. What an i make? Can you give me some tips?
Any cards that may need a reseat?
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration NO, only the bank Mainboard with Floppy and without Floppy Drive.
I got faulty CD32, had no video at all. I did recap and video is back but every few minutes the screen changes to black and white. Any idea what might be still faulty?
Cans dead or the cxa1145 encoder is pooping out. Try s-video and see how it goes
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration sorry, what are cans? Thanks for reply!
@@DarkDefender01 the little square low pass band filters to the very left side of the 1200 board/600 board near the video area, they convert the chroma/luma from the video dac and output the composite video or modulator video
Sooo you gave your sucking tool a name.
Thats neat!
all my tools and characters have names.
Cutting off the SMD's is the Best Method to remove them from the board without damage a Track or a Pad.
