Very cool stuff! Amazing donations =O
I hope a bunch of those Commodore documents get into the Internet Archive.
I was recently trying to remember putting Toasters in 3000's but couldn't recall. As soon as i heard "hacked case" it all came flooding back. I never liked doing it but I was just the one putting them togethers.
I'm the "guilty party" who took a hack saw to those amiga cases 🤦 Back then the idea of being able to carry around an Amiga 3000 that could 1) get on a Novell NetWare network via Ethernet 2) run video toaster demos with a built-in TBC, and 3) run ATT SvRR4 Unix was nothing short of astonishing! The case "hack" was required to get the Toaster to fit. Then the power supply was upgraded to handle all the current draw requirements. It was an amazing box to demo back then!
@@VernGraner I worked for a Commodore/Newtek dealer on the tech side. I used a Dremel and metal nibbler to cut just enough metal to get the card in and provide access to the BNC connectors. It was a "hack" in both the figurative and literal sense. I didn't like doing it and recall at just how awful the end result looked.
That restores my faith in people, Nice gesture from the owner 💓
That was a very tasty burger. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed seeing the UX more though!!! Awesome!!
What a nice setup! The A3000 UX was awesome. Never seen it used in person, unfortunately.
Ebay has a few qic150 tape drives you could get that should read the tape
those magazines, manuals and newspapers at the end, gave a great pang of nostalgia for C=
I feel that! It was a weird expedition to dig through a lot of old boxes and go through all my old CBM stuff prepping to send these things to Chris. It was nostalgic and emotional for me. I was a real True Believer™ in the Amiga and was thoroughly convinced that the superior technology would win in the end. Sadly, I was wrong. The world went Windows and my beloved machines withered on the CBM vine. 😢
I have great memories from that time - and quite a few more boxes of Amiga related "Stuff" from back then. After seeing Chris joy at examining all the "goodies" I sent in, I'm considering digging around and maybe sending another fun CBM surprise box to him in the near future.. we'll see! 😁😂🤣
Watching patiently hoping you install Amix (Amiga Unix) on to that 3000UX
I will i need to find the tape drive. The ux is still being restored. Been busy
That would be an epic episode.
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration please do an episode on that :)
@@ChrisEdwardsRestorationthanks Chris that is awesome
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration you can install it in winuae on to a hard disk image (winuae supports amix tape drive images) then use that with your zulu scsi... at least that's what I did.
Cool, a A3000UX system. I may still have one of those IBM ZCSI drives I used in another system.
All those documents would be cool to save to the Internet Archives.
That’s one big accelerator
Simply excellent video can't wait to see how those two Amigas complete their journey
The A3000D made it back to me and is sitting right behind me, powered up, running demos and everyone in the "Zoom" calls I attend can see it. Lots of folks ask about it! 👍🙂
My goodness I feel quite faint 😅
You need a plain old SCSI QIC150 tape drive for those UX tapes. I used to run one for backups on my A4000 wiyh an Oktagon SCSI HBA (Host Bridge Adapter).
Remember that you can use the Zulu to take image copies off those old SCSI drives as stand-alone. Just add power and a SCSI cable.
Yeah, the A3070 drive supports 250 and 150 QIC tapes but the factory install tapes are all the 150MB variety, afaik.
I have a 120MB Quantum LPS in my GVP HD8+. It still runs flawlessly 32 years after I got it. It wasn't cheap!
Got a backup?
@@VIC-20 I will, as soon as I get the old 500 up and running again.
OMG… they are so beautiful… maybe one day I will get one of that lovers
What a lovely gesture. Wholesome stuff.
This is awesome! A big thank for this video.
I carried that baby to a LOT of trade shows. That said, it was kinda a pain as trade show power was not the most reliable and we didn't have any UPS systems. So, if we had a power glitch (happened often, sadly) the AMIX box would wake up and do a file system check (FSK) and it took a LONG time to complete. There were times folks stopped by to see the AMIX box and all they got to see was the shell slowly making its way through the hard drive to ensure it wasn't damaged by a power glitch. 🤦
Who needs AMIX? I was running Debian on an A1200 in 1996 on a 1GB Quantum SCSI drive.
It's nice to see there are people out there with wonderful Amigas, and cards for them. For some reason I keep thinking the Amiga well is drying up, but every now and then an influencer comes up with a nice haul. It must be getting rather cozy in your Amiga vault these days Chris. 😀 Take care.
its always been cozy. many days i just sit there and stare and smile,.
Awesome haul Dr. Chris
Hmm, did a RedHat Linux install on my Amiga 3000D back in the day for an article in a magazine. That worked just fine with a Cybergraphics 64/3D (I think) I will dig around for the magazine, pretty sure I have it somewhere.
That would be fun to do again 🙂
I remember our Tech said he was running a Unix system for his BBS and ISP service. A4000T?
I put Bigfoot power supplies in all my A2000s due to using up all the slots & for the hard drives (Quantum Fireballs, Micropolis Atlas, Seagate, etc) otherwise it was seriously unstable.
Cool story bro
More donations the better! Man, if I ever send you something for repair, you're getting at least its value in donations!
Nice, chunky HD looks like an IBM Corsair….first drive to use MR heads, developed in the UK. Fast drive for its time but loud and hot! I was working at IBM in the 90s…good times.
You are *so* right! THose drives were loud, and hot and had HUGE current draw!
My A3K missing the same black square button off the PSU. Loup City? holy crap, wish I had known that. I'd have driven 170 miles for PSU parts.
I've actually managed to get AMIX running on WinUAE and you can use UAE to transfer to an Amiga hard drive with the right adaptors.Had it running with an emulated Lowell card.
Love the shirt :)
I am surprised the UX Amigas didn’t come with a tape drive as a standard
Mine did
They did. The 3000UX was supplied with an A3070 external SCSI tape streamer because there's not enough room to fit one internally. The 2500UX had one in the 5 1/4" drive bay.
For some reason I always thought the 3000UX came with a built in tape drive.
It came with an external tape drive when I received it. However, the drive was normally only used for the install so there wasn't a reason to carry it around with the unit which I think is why they tended to disappear (put in a box that got lost in the closet) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
the Amiga 3000UX is my dream computer, annoying that they are always so expensive
Have you thought about adding some breaking glass sound effects when chucking empty boxes across the room? 😁
I normally do
You cab scan all that in to the internet archive? - lol - A LOT of work.
another awesome video. love the big box amigas a UX is on my list too. looking forward to seeing AMUNIX running on that beauty.
Those harddrives were fitted in IBM AX and RS servers in the 90’s. Got a couple at home that I “saved “ in the early 00’s. WhenI left IBM. Mine are a massive 2GB. They still work, dont make em like that anymore.
I don't doubt you are correct. I was based in Austin TX at the time and the IBM plant had a habit of dumping surplus bits and pieces to some small tech resale shops around the city. I'm pretty sure that's where those 3.5" SCSI drives came from. I'm sad Dr. Chris couldn't get them to be "seen" long enough to dump their data. I will likely try a recovery of the data some time down the road when I have time and workbench space. :)
The amount of perfectly good hardware that IBM sent to industrial crushers from our sites was staggering. Rather than give it to local schools or charities they just paid to have it crushed and shredded. Yet as an employee you could request old hardware for personal permanent home use, as long as your manager signed the paperwork all good, just pick what you needed.
This was amazing to watch (I guess maybe I *over* packed them - but well.. I didn't want them broken in transit! The foam between the cards was also just inserted to keep them from flexing if the box got dropped.. so yeah.. really overkill ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just want to say I am SO happy I was able to put some of the materials that had been sitting in my storage bins, directly into the hands of someone who will value them, share them, and keep them for the future! I'm pretty sure I have more of this kind of stuff scattered hither and yon through my version of the Indianan Jones warehouse! 😁 Maybe I should think about sending another box 'o goodies to Dr Chirs 🤔
As for the 3000UX, that baby traveled with me all around the US as I went to dealerships and tradeshows. Back then, I had a foam lined "Anvil" style travel case for it (not really sure where it ended up 🤔). I'm a little sad there was a scratch right across the "UX" badge on the front of the unit, but it had a storied life and "earned" its scars on the road being an ambassador for CBM.
Again BIG THANKS to Dr. Chris for giving so much of his time and energy and money to keeping Amigas up and running around the world. I was proud to put the UX in his hands so as to guarantee it has a super bright future being cared for by one of the best CATS techs out there! 😁
Wow!
Thank you Chris you do great work.
Did you steal that knife from Worf? Klingons can get very angry about that...
Hi Dr Chris.. when you go to do the tape stuff, please don't put that super rare AMIX tape in it. Not first up. They have a habit of turning the rubber pinch rollers into liquid spooge and they do smear it all over the tape. So..yeah refurb and test it on something not important first
Yeah i plan to get some other tapes in it first
I miss printed material. Nowadays you get a bar code on the box at best. Manufacturers have gotten lazy and cheap. They think - hey lets put an internet connection on the device and we can release it unfinished and expect the user to run a firmware update whenever the hell we get around to finishing the product, if ever.
I was happy when I finally found the Amiga 3000UX manuals and paperwork. I had to dig through a lot of boxes, but it was worth it to get as much original bits into Chris's hands as I could manage. :)
i'd love to see the video toaster in action!
im not super bright with the video toasters but 10Marc at 10 minute amiga retrocast uses them and shows the magic, here is a taste of his video ua-cam.com/video/Chvlvd1jMg8/v-deo.html
@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration awesome thanks for that ill check it out
hey chris, quick question, ever thought about converting pc floppys,so you have some laying around in case of broken amiga floppies, the pc floppies is not going to be around forever.
See my older videos. Ive done that and show how to
Will we get some AmigaPCI deepdive ?
may be i have some new Buttons for the floppy that fits into the A3000 UX
Does anyone know for sure who did the work for the Amiga UNIX port? Its unlikely it was done in house at Commodore and I suspect WATCOM probably had a hand in it since porting UNIX to various platforms as a subcontractor was kind of their bread and butter back then but it'd be nice to have some confirmation.
There was a commodore team working with sun
Don't we meet one of them in Deathbed Vigil? At the very least we learn there was a team of people.
Chris do you have any info on the A4000 U213 when one updates buster 09 to buster 11?
its this right here www.amigawiki.org/lib/exe/fetch.php?media=de:parts:a4000_u213.rar. from this main page www.amigawiki.org/doku.php?id=en:parts:pld_download
I didn't know you needed an updated U213 when you updated buster to rev 11???
El Paso is as far from TX as possible.
Was there any actual difference hardware-wise with the UX or was it just different base software with the unit?
It's just a standard A3000 25MHz with 2MB of CHIP, 4MB of FAST RAM and a 68882 factory fitted, with a special version of 1.4 kickstart ROM (to allow switching between booting UNIX or loading a standard Amiga kickstart from a file) and a different case badge. Came with the software, A3070 tape drive, 3 button mouse, and a big price markup. Factory order *options* included the A2410 TIGA graphics card, A2065 ethernet, and A2232 multi-port serial card which are all supported in Amiga UNIX.
@@JeremyLevi Mine only had the Ethernet card- oh and the three button "preggo" mouse 😁
Chris I have seen some UA-camrs claiming that sometime you can fix chips by heating them up. Sounds a little dodgy to me. Have you ever heard of that one?
Yes it is dodgy, if it works on a chip its only a temp fix but at least helps you diagnose that said chip is at fault.
ive only heard of that working on some old nvidia gfx cards where the soldering was sketchy even brand new, they "might" work for a bit, but the dodgy solder would eventually fail much earlier than usual, heating them up a bit sometimes helped fix the solder and you got a bit more life out of the cards, other than that ive not heard of any other valid reason for such treatment.
maybe to reset BGA balls or something like the old red ring o death Xbox 360, but for a ttl logic chip, nah just bakes the inside and ruins it more
Whoha
@9:49 did you mean v1.4? Also, can you be more specific about them "blowing up all the time"? My A3k with kickstart 1.4 has suddenly decided it cannot load my kickstart 3.2.2 rom file. In fact, it won't load any kickstart file above v1.3. I even tried old superkickstart 2.x disks. Weird. I see my power LED flashing about 7 times and then it repeats. Screen is blank the whole time. If I power on with the mouse buttons held, I still get the kickstart 1.4 boot menu and I can boot into Workbench 1.3 (floppy or HD) just fine. Weird. AmigaTestKit RAM tests passed.
blow up all the time means the roms get static zapped and die. yours sounds like its working, i have a 3.1.4 super kickstart adf if you need it.
Thanks for the offer. I already have a superkickstart322 I created. That too does not work. I also planned to get some real 3.2.2 ROMs anyway. I may just decide to abandon the whole Workbench 1.3 dual boot thing but I will poke around inside some more first. Might just be ICs working loose.
