  • Here I move away from the hammerstone to take large flakes and start using antler direct percussion instead. This allows me to better preserve the width of the piece while taking off nice long, wide thinning flakes that help balance the whole piece overall. Now I'm starting to think about the final shape of the piece, and perhaps what to make out of it. Any suggestions?
    Thanks for watching. Cheers.

Allot of work getting there, and it's looking good!
I can only find small pieces of Chert here. It's what the native Apache used, and I can only make small points so far.
    That stuff is tough!

Thank you Zoltan! What kind of chert do you find, where are you located? I buy almost all of my material, don't have a lot of good stuff close to me either.

@@prehistoricliving the chert I find is white to light grey. I live in the Rim Country of Arizona, and I believe the Chert forms in the local Limestone in nodules. I only find small pieces when I'm out hiking.
I've found a couple of points over the years, and they have all been the same white material.
It's great for use with flint and steel for fire making as well!

Interesting! Thanks for the reply. I have a similar situation, local chert that forms as nodules in limestone, it's hard to find a big piece that isn't all freeze cracked and messed up!
