Solo Overnight Winter Camping in Ontario Crown Land - Prehistoric Living - December 2022
Getting back in the swing of things here with a little winter camping trip. Just an overnight recon trip to get a lay of the land and figure out a spot where I can make a semi-permanent camp that I can return to every now and then. Didn't find it at this spot, too close to people, but I'll get back out there soon enough.
Thanks for watching. Cheers.

Root Beer Chert Part 9/9, Breaking the Piece, And My Heart
Переглядів 408Рік тому
Well, the worst has happened. I took a much too large risk before warming up properly, and catastrophe ensued. Pretty sad about it, but learned a valuable lesson. Oh well, moving on. I won't put this up for auction obviously, but just out of curiosity, would anyone want to buy something like this to use as an example of a manufacturing break on archaeological examples? Let me know in the commen...

This whole video is all about pressure flaking the Pedernales base into shape. I didn't get it fully completed, left it a bit rough so I could focus on finishing the blade part before doing the final touches. That was the plan anyways, but as you'll see in Part 9 everything went disastrously awry... Stay tuned. Thanks for watching. Cheers. Here are the links to the other parts in the series: Ro...

Gaining steam with this piece and really getting it thinned down now at this stage. Setting up platforms mostly with smaller hammerstones and taking off the large flakes with a couple different antler billets, pretty much all freehand in this one. Here I move away from the hammerstone to take large flakes and start using antler direct percussion instead. This allows me to better preserve the width of the piece while taking off nice long, wide thinning flakes that help balance the whole piece overall. Now I'm starting to think about the final shape of the piece, and perhaps what to make out of it. Any suggestions? Thanks for watching. Che...

Silver Sheen Obsidian Part 3, Breaking the Biface but Salvaging the Pieces

Well, as the title says, I broke this one... Sad, but that's the way of knapping life sometimes. I think the silver layer was more brittle than the rest of it, and that could have contributed to the issues I was having with step terminations and ultimately breaking it in half. Oh well, I managed to salvage a few cool little points out of the pieces, and even got my first little trihedral point ...

This video started out with good light, but then got dark pretty quick. Sorry if you can't really see things at the end there, the next video will have some good detail shots of where I end up after this one. This is FANTASTIC! Thank you very much. I’d be too afraid that I’d break that beautiful piece! I find this same type of obsidian in the Eastern Sierra’s near the California/ Nevada border. What area did you acquire that? Not the exact location but general region. I’m just curious.

    Watching this is heartbreaking. It's easy to forget how much material is "wasted" by spalling. Watching videos like this makes you appreciate why people slab valuable rock, instead of spalling it.

    • @prehistoricliving
      @prehistoricliving Рік тому

      Seeing these ignorant comments is heartbreaking. I’ll repeat for those in the back, this channel is called Prehistoric Living, not Slab Knapping in the Modern Age. I use every flake that comes off to make small points and tools. It’s actually more efficient than slabbing if you can wrap your head around different ways of thinking. Instead of making standard points all the same size that look like they were made using modern tools I can take one piece of stone and make 100 things of different sizes, shapes, and functions using authentic prehistoric techniques. I think that’s much more beautiful than slab knapping, though I don’t have anything against people who do, only the foolish ones who claim authentic modes of knapping are wasteful. There’s lots of rock in the world, chill out, let me do what I want to do, and don’t feel like you have to assert your opinion everywhere. You don’t.

    THIS is exactly why people make and knap slabs. There are still 4 more parts of this series, and already the size of this point, compared to the size of the spall - of absolutely GORGEOUS material - is heat breaking. I am enjoying these videos immensely, but I can't stop picturing where this started, and comparing to where he is now. I use spalls and slabs, and I consider slabs cheating, even while I'm using them, but they sure are an excellent way to get the maximum amount of material out of a rock.

    Wow! Very impressive biface reduction. You are able to remove very thin flakes (and long,too) across that spall with a large hammer stone. Seems to me the keys were lot's of grinding, good choice of where you prepared platforms, super accurate strikes right on the edge of the platform and lots of support/ pressure from your holding hand. Lovely work!

    • @prehistoricliving
      @prehistoricliving Рік тому

      Thanks very much Dooley. Sorry it took me a while to see your comments. Your observations are spot on. After 10 years of knapping I've learned that well prepared isolated platforms are a must for good biface thinning. The amount of preparation needed for that platform will differ depending on the materials used and quality of the rock. For me, soft hammerstones like sandstone work really well for obsidian and other fine grained volcanics like daysite, and grip onto those edges almost as well as antler. Every piece is different and requires a slightly different approach, which is part of the reason why I love it so much! Cheers.

      That's awesome, what a great comment to read, thanks Anthony! This indirect method I use now seems to work really well for me, so I don't think I'll change it up anytime soon. I'm glad you find it satisfying, because so do I! Feels great to get those nice thinning flakes off with it.

    I guess I'll have to create a pile of chips at my new home. My old place has a pile about as large as yours. Murpheys law certainly applies to knapping. If something can go wrong, it will.

      Oh for sure, a home isn't complete without at least one big pile of flakes! That pile was just about a year's worth, and I don't knap as much as I used to. I have buckets of flakes all over the place, can't seem to let them go lol.

    You have really nice platforms, but i think in this stage you should already use antler or copper😄 but nice work you drow the maximum from the hammerstone

      Thanks Jan. I could have moved to my big caribou billet for sure, but didn’t really need to. Wanted to focus on setting up good edges with the stone first, and then get going with the antler to thin it down. Cheers.

    Hornstone is naturally heat treated

    • @prehistoricliving
      @prehistoricliving Рік тому

      I don't think natural heat treatment is a thing, unless you mean it works well raw, which it does. There is one type of hornstone that responds well to heat, or so I've been told, and this was an experiment to figure out if I had the right one, which I did not. Cheers.

    • @johnknappingthings271
      @johnknappingthings271 Рік тому

      @@prehistoricliving I’m sorry but it but the stone referred to as hornstone is naturally introduced to heat in the ground therefore it works well raw and it doesn’t usually need heat treating most often times heat treating hurts the stone and makes it either too brittle or cause it to explode

    One thing I've learned about knapping is to be patient...if you get all excited and hurry up trying to get that nice flake... you mess up🤦...good video 👍

      Oh yes that's for sure, a lesson I've learned the hard way too many times! I tend to only start knapping now when I feel calm enough for it, too much excitement and I just break everything I touch. Thanks Benny, cheers.

      Thanks Zoltan! I do live in the city, Hamilton, Ontario, but I plan to move out into the country one day with plenty of land to knap on! I am definitely taking my time on this one, I usually am a pretty slow deliberate knapper, but making an extra effort on this one. It's starting to take shape now, I just filmed part 8 yesterday :)

    You're making me wish I lived near Mount St Helen. Too costly to have it shipped cross country. Absolutely beautiful material.

    • @prehistoricliving
      @prehistoricliving Рік тому

      To my knowledge St. Helen hasn't produced any usable obsidian. California and Oregon have the biggest sources in the US, and there are a bunch in Mexico. I unfortunately have to buy all my stone and ship it across the Canadian border, where customs costs just as much as the stone! One day I'll do a big cross country collection run myself, that's the dream anyways...

      @@prehistoricliving the chert I find is white to light grey. I live in the Rim Country of Arizona, and I believe the Chert forms in the local Limestone in nodules. I only find small pieces when I'm out hiking. I've found a couple of points over the years, and they have all been the same white material. It's great for use with flint and steel for fire making as well!
