I saw this in the early 80s as a child on one of the kids channels. It was recorded on VHS, and I used to actually perform the entire song with Leo's moves and all at my grandmothers request. It was my first expierience with any type of performance. That seems to have been ages ago. My grandmother is long dead now, and I currently find myself performing on Broadway everynight. I will always have nothing but reverance for Leo and Jim for helping me discover my niche.

Leo Sayer was so lucky to have played with Animal on drums. Back in the 80s I was in a Thrash Metal band and offered Animal tons of money to join the band but he turned us down then proceded to eat my guitar.
Just totally genius My time 1960/80 Hard to believe this generation never heard of Leo One day soon This will be a smash hit no 1 again Like Katie Bush ❤ When we had the best It every child happiness and dreams to see this song ❤ Street wise TAL...........
We were in college at the time. He became extremely popular in Australia 🇦🇺 in the mid 1970s through to the 1980s. A truly classy and gifted artist who was very unique. Great musician.
Thank you The Muppet Show, if it hadn't been for you I would have never been introduced to so many talented people and so many fantastic songs, most definitely Leo Sayer and The Show Must Go On. I might have heard a song like You Make Me Feel Like Dancing here and there, but a song like this one, I likely would have gone through life never even knowing this song existed, this amazing version of it or any version of it, by any artist at all. And that would have been such a loss!!! The only thing that could have made this better is instead of that one muppet, the banjo player had been Kermit, sitting on a crate behind Leo, legs folded, banjo in his lap, playing his heart out. ♥ ♥ ♥
Man, I love this better than Leo's own version! Without the piano, it brings out a delightful starkness, and his vocal is much stronger here. This song, this version of the song, from The Muppet Show, actually made me go out and buy his BEST OF album! Kudos to the Muppets!
Glad you enjoy so much. It's pretty inferior to me. What's w/ the lyric changes? And the scat thing has always been an annoying, spazzy thing to do, imo. Here it's certainly over the top.
I love how Leo chose this song to sing on the Muppets when he had other commercially successful hits at this time. He chose this classic and fit in perfect. CLOSET LEO FAN since i waa a kid, one of the all time greats
What a great performance of this song. Leo's voice had such a raw quality to it yet with such control. The music on the Muppet Show was always excellent too.
I am in love with his voice, though I am sure he is a great guy I fell for voices more than anything else about a person. I grew up listening to his music literally wearing out his albums, lol. I never had a crush on singers, bands, or actors as I never knew them. I did fall for voices as strange as that sounds and I have 8 tracks, albums, cassettes, and Cds of my favorites, Mr Sayer is one of them. Thank you for making my growing up years more enjoyable Mr Sayer and let's not get started on the Muppets, I love them all. Alright I had a major crush on all the Muppets. There I confess... 💞 Ruby*
Genius Excellent show man Excellent song Excellent artist Every child happiness the best Back then ❤ Thanks Leo National treasure For England ❤ Street wise TAL.......
Here's a dude who made our life's a bit more colourful, he ain't Bob Dylan with million albums, or "the Stones" with career of 60 years but that's neet too. Thanks Leo dude.
Amazing! It’s very interesting to me that in hindsight I can see how the Muppet Show was such a great showcase for talented artist to present their work in unique and theatrical ways. It may have seemed like silly fun when I was a kid, but this was likely the only time I saw Leo Sayer performing this great song. I’m beginning to understand why the song stuck with me and has resonated all these years. I didn’t understand until recently that it was HIS song and I am certain that seeing him perform with such feeling it as a kid left a mark on me.
this music video is truly awesome! the show must go on has been one of my all time favorite songs I enjoy this video I like both 3 dog night's recording of this song & Leo Sayers as well
Just great back those days we had the best artist talent Singers Leo was a genius Especially his dancing This was my favourite song ❤ Beautiful voice Simple song Child happiness and dreams Watching this on u tube again ❤ When England was great back then 1950/80 My time Thanks Leo I had a lot of girls when I played this song on my piano Especially the Dip. Dap. Doo Girls went crazy But that was so hard to do Leo made it so simple ❤ Thanks Leo had a great time. Magical artist ❤ National treasure One clever 🤡❤
Wish all the younger people could have been there in 1974 to hear Negron’s version on the radio. You need to appreciate both versions and understand why Negron changed the lyric. Ultimately, Leo did something that never gets old.
this music video is truly awsome!. the show must go on has been one of my all time favorite songs. I enjoy this video. I like both 3 dog night's recording of this song & Leo Sayer's as well.
I totally agree! That drum beat Animal is playing kicks major butt! I mean, the whole performance is great... but I guess being a practicing drummer myself I can't help to notice the good beat.
I adore LEO SAYER. HE IS A MUSICAL GENIUS AND A HUGE PART OF MY HIGH SCHOOL MEMORY. AND HIS LONG TALL GLASSES SONG, AND WHEN I NEED YOU.. OH I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.
When this song was out I was a huge Allman Bros, Marshall Tucker snob and hated it. Time goes on now 60 I was watching with my grandkids and thought guy is flat amazing. See version of him in white face and think “ Dude your a dumbass, see what you missed” guy deserves al the flowers he gets.
They made a mistake by not having Floyd out there playing the bass with them. I mean, the bass is such a prominent element in this song. I still love this, though!
"This is my alltime favourite version of this song" This is the original version. Three Dog Night covered it and, for some unknown reason, changed the lyric to "I MUST let the show go on" which kills the whole "thing" to the song!!
Lead singer Chuck Negron changed the lyric because he felt that he was trapped and had to let the “show” go on. His book is entitled Three Dog Nightmare.
Animal does a good job on the drums on this song. Bob Henrit was the original drummer on the 1973 recording of "The Show Must Go On" on Chrysalis Records.
I agree, I loved the three Dog Night version so much, I though his version was alright, but nothing special. I find his interpretation really wonderful now.
While I slightly prefer the musical arrangement of Three Dog Night's version, Sayer's effortless vocals are much better. Perhaps someday technology will enable us to replace Chuck Negron's vocals with Sayer's. Now THAT would be perfect!

Call the PC Police!! A smoking muppet!!! :) Great version of this song!! He should have been more popular here in the states. I'm 41 and still love the Muppet Show! (And no, the smoking muppet doesn't really offend me!!)
A muppet smoking a cigarette. Ah, the 70s
This is exactly why the 70's was a great decade. Amazing talented people (Like Leo) appearing on the Muppets. Loved it as a kid. Absolutely brilliant.
Just incredible. I was thinking that while I watched this! Like, wow, look what kids got to see in the 70s! It really needs to come back, this vibe.

so freaking true!
AMEN.
Leo is a throwback to a different place and time. His love for Ragtime is apparent in his music. Love both tdn and Leo's versions.
"Send In the Clowns"
so do I, but love sayer's "won't let the show go on" more than tdn's cover
Just don't know how 27 people can dislike this... What an entertainer Leo is and was...total quality!!!
They probably don’t like the cigarette
One of best shows in the world
Leo Sayer was so lucky to have played with Animal on drums. Back in the 80s I was in a Thrash Metal band and offered Animal tons of money to join the band but he turned us down then proceded to eat my guitar.

Was it a hair cut?
The amazing Muppets featuring Leo Sayer. Lol. Gezzz I miss the 70's
Re-watching the Muppet show and this performance just floors me. What a great showing.
Leo Sayer put out a new song this year, too! Tradewinds.
It's only now that I realize Sayer is truly gifted. As a child in the 70s, I was unable to appreciate his talent.
Same.
We were in college at the time. He became extremely popular in Australia 🇦🇺 in the mid 1970s through to the 1980s. A truly classy and gifted artist who was very unique. Great musician.
I thought he was just a disco dude. Now I see the light. Well, we were young.
If we get to watch our lives over when we die, 70s and 80s babies are in for a real treat.
Thank you The Muppet Show, if it hadn't been for you I would have never been introduced to so many talented people and so many fantastic songs, most definitely Leo Sayer and The Show Must Go On.

What a talent (and Leo ain't bad either!).
Seriously, Leo is some talent - one of the greats.
Thanks Leo.
I cannot get enough of this video.....ty so much for adding to my addiction.
The banjo player's cigarette is the icing on this wonderful cake.
What a great performance of this song. Leo's voice had such a raw quality to it yet with such control. The music on the Muppet Show was always excellent too.

this video of Leo Sayer & the muppets singing the show must go on is truely awesome! I love 3 Dog night's recording of this song as well as Leo sayers
I love this song. I'm having it at my funeral. Repeated twice...
For those curious, the name for the 'smoking' muppet is Bobby Benson (here without his Baby Band).
Yes I know far too much about these silly things.
If I remember correctly, this was before the baby band
I love this song. AND the muppets. AND this episode.
Amazing performance, Leo
what a talent................come back leo....
