    Jerry wrote this song for Layne about their friendship when the times they fought with each other. Favourite line of the song is "You my friend I will defend

      Cantrell realized that Stanley was falling back into addiction and there wasn’t anything that he could really do about it, his solo song “Cut You In” was about the same thing....he saw Layne’s death coming years before it happened.

      In case people haven’t heard that song here it is with lyrics, it’s pretty obvious that this is along the same lines if a little more harsh since Layne was further along in his “re-addiction“:

    This is just a wonderful, simple verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge/solo-verse-chorus-outro song. Lyrics are a meditation, love the harmonies in the vocals. Bass and drums are well played but not flashy, and the guitar hides out in the back but then gives a stunning, soulful solo that doesn't have a single note that didn't need to be there.

    Thanks guys for doing this one, this song is really special to me. I had a sunny afternoon in 1994 where I was driving from North Seattle to South Tacoma, and as I was crossing on the Ship Canal Bridge I was listening to this song, and it really just captured the moment. Windows down, music blaring, nice breeze coming in, sun glinting off the waters of Lake Union - a moment frozen in time. The next year found me losing my house, moving up to Canada to try to save my marriage, and things went downhill for a while until after my divorce. When things were shittiest, in the middle of winter in Calgary, sometimes the sun would break through and I'd play that song and be transported back. Still does that to me, I cruise around the rural roads SE of Seattle (came back in 2004), sunny days, windows down & sunroof back, much older now. Kids are grown, married to wife #2, on the other side of 50. But that song still carries me back and puts a smile on my face every time. It was cool to be in Seattle in the early 90s, so much great music, and of it all Alice was the best, still one of my favorite bands. Cheers.

      And, you know, this is why. This is why, after six years in the Navy, having found a cheaper place in Norfolk, it's just, it's not the same, and it's why I have to come back home. I don't know how to live here, but I did in Seattle, with all its flaws. Guys like these are part of that feeling. It's beauty that makes, as Ryan said earlier, the bullshit we have to go through in everyday life, well, seem more temporary. That beauty, as nice as Norfolk and VA Beach and the area around outside the base area, it's not here.
      "You, my friend

    One of the mistakes I made almost 30 years ago with Alice in Chains is assuming too much of the lyrics were Layne. Jerry wrote about half the lyrics. Both Layne and Jerry were very accomplished along those lines. Jerry was the more intricate songwriter, but Layne was great at finding these simple but catchy guitar grooves (AIC - "Angry Chair" and Mad Season - "I Don't Know Anything" both come to mind.)
    No matter what either have done over the years, I've loved it. AIC, Layne in Mad Season, Jerry's couple solo albums...

      If you want something off the radar, you should try ‘A Little Bitter’ or ‘What The Hell Have I’ by AIC from ‘The Last Action Hero’ soundtrack

    AIC - Dont Follow, Sludge Factory
    Mad Season where Layne is on vocals, Pearl Jam's guitarist, Mike Mccready, Screaming Tree's drummer, Barrette Martin, and Mark Lanegan, another brilliant songwriter and vocalist - Long Gone Day (one of the best) and River Of Deceit

    “Don’t Follow” is the only other song from this album you should do. Very bluesy.

      I think Jar of Flies is not their cup of tea lol. And that speaks to the greatness of AIC. They say it so on the vídeo. But I think they would dig Don't Follow.

    This is a great summer time backyard/background tune but also becomes extremely musically satisfying when you sit down and analyze the vocal harmonies, drum beat, and bass line.

    Please do Dirt or Angry Chair. Dirt just feels literally "dirty" and sludgy. And Layne wrote the lyrics of Angry Chair by himself.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 4 роки тому +6

      He wrote a lot of the lyrics himself, but he wrote the entirety of Angry Chair. Music and all. Lyrically he wrote over half of AiC songs. Especially on Jar of Flies and Tripod.
