This is such a "mood song", it'll resonate with you the closer your mood is to the song.
Clerenn 💯
A good song resonates with you regardless.
These dudes need a good Molly-hangover😋
Hmmm... that dash of condescension worked into a statement that otherwise reveals an obvious lack of experience with the subject...
Parody account checks out. Go get 'em Donny!
BIG FACTS
"'Fell On Black Days' was like this ongoing fear I've had for years. It took me a long time to write that song. We've tried to do three different versions with that title, and none of them have ever worked," he said. "It's a feeling that everyone gets. You're happy with your life, everything's going well, things are exciting - when all of a sudden you realize you're unhappy in the extreme, to the point of being really, really scared. There's no particular event you can pin the feeling down to, it's just that you realize one day that everything in your life is f--ked!" Chris Cornell quoted in magazine article about writing the song
Valerie 😞 so sad! Beautiful soul!
I believe Chris suffered from clinical depression, and ultimately his meds led to his death. Part of me wishes he would have continued to smoke and drink, but it wasn't meant to be.
Man that's hard to read. I used to rationalize depression, as I've never suffered from it genuinely. Until I met an artist who was bipolar, and it became clear it was chemical. no rime no reason her dreams could be coming true and she would still suddenly just have days where she described she couldn't find the joy in anything. so cruel.
That is the definition of clinical depression, unfortunatelly
Yep the Black Days 3 version on the Superunknown deluxe is a great heavy counterpoint to where this song would eventually go.
"Now I'm doing time." If you've struggled with depression and/or anxiety you can relate to being in that prison.
Yeah, it's a thing.
Yeah I've been doing time for a while now
💜💐♥️🍁🌾🌳👑
Insightful
I got into Soundgarden through Nirvana. Superunknown is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Chris Cornell had one of the greatest voices in music. Such a sad loss. RIP Chris Cornell.
Same
Down on the Upside is just as good as Superunknown imo. Just never gets the love. Superunknown is one of the best ever like, i agree
"The demons he wrestled with were real. But he harnessed those demons and rode them like a mother flippin’ Chariot Of Lightning strapped with Marshall stacks to make some of the greatest rock 'n' roll of all time." -Tom Morello
Awesome quote.
Thanks for including this.
Soundgarden's "the day I tried to live "
Should've been this one...definitely
Correct .,Heavy and DARK !!!
Agreed!
One more time around!!
Definitely! The lyrics don't stop in that song!
I’d classify Grunge as more of an era than an actual genre
Wtf is grunge?
I think it's essentially defined in terms of location too. Seattle area.
Yep...agree..lived it, loved it...
You can make that case. To me, it's both. Especially since Post-Grunge (as with Post-Punk) is a thing. Seattle was the epicenter of The Grunge Revolution; however, Grunge ain't confined to Seattle. Grunge has been brought to us by way of Chicago (Smashing Pumpkins), U.K. (Bush), and even Australia (early Silverchair) and South Africa (Seether, although they are technically Post-Grunge). Grunge rocks, man. 👍🏻
I agree with you 100%
The end of hair metal, and dropping theatrics for the most plain, unimpressive look possible is EXACTLY what it was.
You could argue it was the end of what KISS started, TBH.
I remember being a kid and my Daddy would wash his bronco on our lawn in our new house and he'd always be blaring Soundgarden hella loud and I'd be playing in our front yard singing to every song... Oh nostalgia...
sound garden - 4th of july, such a sick song
jimmie johnson yes! 👏🏽👏🏽
THIS
Seconded
Yesss. One of the heaviest songs ever.
100%
Burden in my hand by soundgarden. Amazing tune.
jesse zimmermann Yup, probably my favorite Soundgarden track.
@@kdm704 mine as well!!
Temple Of The Dog “Hunger Strike” someone else said that and yes it’s a CLASSIC
Ahhh classic! I'm so old.
@Zak Abbott *Vedder
Have you heard the intro to the songs, ‘footsteps’ by Pearl Jam, ‘times of trouble’ by Temple of the Dog and ‘rotten apple’ by Alice in Chains? All a dedication, like the Alice song Would? to Andrew Wood.
‘Apple’ was the name of the only album released by Mother Love Bone.
The band Green River, when they split, half that band became Mudhoney and half of that band became Mother Love Bone and when MLB split, half of that band became Pearl Jam.
The song ‘right turn’ by Alice in Chains is sung by Layne, Mark from Mudhoney and Chris Cornell.
Chris Cornell was Andrew Wood’s best friend.
Pearl Jam have a song called ‘Lukin’ on their 4th album ‘No Code’ and it’s about Matt Lukin, the original bass player form Mudhoney - are there any other Seattle band links like these?
Unless you’ve been there you will never understand what could be so bad.
So true. This song is about some dark places.
If you're referring to what they are discussing at 10:25, I don't think it comes from asking what is so bad and more from "if only there was something we could have rond". Which is pretty common after a suicide.
Life's a bitch.. it'll get better if you let it, or you can spiral downward... I've been both places.. I'm just floating in the middle
Say Hello 2 Heaven is a must for the pinnacle of Chris Cornell's vocals
Birth ritual
Reach Down tho...
Nicolás Riveros reach down is for sure one of Chris's best songs of any project. it's way too long for a first reaction type video like this though. that's something you won't appreciate until you're already interested enough to even be checking out the entire album.
Yes! Absolutely one of the best!
Say Hello 2 Heaven, you guys gotta hear that. Possibly Chris' best vocal recording.
And a wonderful tribute to Andrew wood from mother love bone
The vocals on that song can rip your soul open.
From the T.O.T.D stuff, "Four Walled World" kills it for me.
I’ve posted that request on numerous of their videos
They really should do this song. It truly is his best vocals!
The mellow groove of the song is trying to convey the feeling of being at your lowest point. It builds and Chris opens up the vocals. One of his best
IMO.
Audioslave’s “Like a Stone” is one of my favorite songs sung by Cris Cornell. Check it out. Totally different.
My favorite Chris Cornell written song. Been a fan since '89. No one sings like him anymore.
Still spine tingling after all these years. And that solo never fails to make me have a romance explosion in my pants.
Crazy they haven’t reacted to this
both soundgarden and ratm were better than audioslave.
i remember waiting for the release of Cochise, their first single, and being very disappointed.
Y’all need to listen to 4th of July by Soundgarden! 🤘
Best soundgarden song right there (except maybe rusty cage) so heavy
Hell yea!! That is my favorite song by them
Ian best Soundgarden song for sure.
Straight up metal sound to that song, it's great.
I love that song!!
Chris Cornell singing “nothing compares to you” bring chills every time I hear it!
The Teacher brings a tear to my eye, honestly
That entire acoustic set is amazing. Stripped down Cornell vocals for 10 plus tracks. Why does SO much talent leave us too soon?
I feel the same way.
This is a WILD performance from Chris Cornell, totally agree.
It’s pretty evident why Cornell was nicknamed ‘The Voice’ in the industry..
Cornell is my all time favorite vocalist. As a vocalist myself, I look up to him even when I am never going to reach his full four octaves vocal register.
You may wanna listen to his Billy Jean cover, guys.
+ songwriter + poet + Human
SAME. Layne and Chris are close for me. I only see Freddy Mercury’s voice as technically a little better technically, but I like these guys’ tones better.
LOVE his cover of No one compares with you!
Funny that you would mention Jimi Hendrix, because he was also from Seattle!
"Say Hello to Heaven" great song from chris cornell...his voice is amazing in everything he does, and i can relate to most of his music. R.I.P. Chris, you are greatly missed.
For someone who sometimes struggles with his inner demons, this is easily my favorite Soundgarden song. Ever.
#RIP Chris Cornell
Kim's completely unique tunings and exotic riffs are, along with Chris' amazing voice, what puts Soundarden in a league all their own. The riff is repeated to soak it for ALL the emotion it brings.
Superunknown is one of the greatest Albums of all time.
that statement is about as accurate as it gets! Top to bottom, Superunknown is a masterpiece-so heavy, melodic, tight, incredible riffs and production......damn you Chris!
Badmotorfinger too
Superagree
Fell on Black Days and The Day I Tried to Live are both really emotional songs. You really feel it.
I went on my own “grunge” tour when I visited Seattle for the first time last year. It was awesome
Which places did you visit?
Gotta get the time signature down to realize how great the musicianship is.
I've never cried so much over a "celebrity" death as I did when Chris Cornell passed. I think it will always hurt for a lot of us.
Me too
oatmealshoes Same. Celebrity deaths don’t normally touch me - not really. His though...man
This was sad for sure but the one that got me was Dimebag
It's still so hard to hear his voice and some songs I still cant make it through
@shaking like tremoloby simply stating you're too afraid to cry because you think it will make you look like a woman shows your lack of maturity and intellect, and your "men who cry are pussies" comment proves in fact, real men do cry and the ones who don't are truly pussies.
That voice though, so smooth. He was so talented. He is missed by many.
Yes, absolutely love this groove and his smooth as butter vocals here.
Tanya M Yes, he left this world way too soon :(
Peak Chris Cornell SANGING IT is "When I'm Down" off his first solo album. It's basically a piano-driven soul ballad and he really kicks out all the stops.
Euphoria Morning is a great album, for sure it is my CC's favorite one: it's full of excellent songs.
This track is the epitome of rhythm & Blues. Especially lyrically
Soundgarden - Slaves and Bulldozers - This is the greatest recording of the entire scene, at least from a vocal standpoint, if not in totality. If you want the flavor of the scene back then, this is it.
100%. Stonking, heavy track with ridiculously good vocals
The whole badmotorfinger album just kicks ass!!!
The Tranya You,re right! SandB is effing great!!!
Beyond the Wheel is up there too.
Temple of the Dog - "Say Hello to Heaven"
That was a song Chris Cornell wrote dedicate to Andrew Wood the singer of Mother Love Bone. This song has a history to the whole grunge moment.
Great video guys thanks 👍
Really good vocals
Hunger Strike as well.
Love that song!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A thousand times, yes!!!
My favorite Soundgarden song.
This song has a really unique time signature. Really drives the whole song beautifully
4:10 Jimmy Hendrix was also from Seattle by the way ...
Check out Layne Staley and friends in Mad Season - River of Deceit.
Great song!
Ditto! Can't recommend that whole album enough!
Wake Up & November Hotel 💯
Favorite song of all time.. That voice 💗
Still in my library today 👌
For Soundgarden I would recommend.....
-Rusty Cage
-Slaves and Bulldozers
-Room a Thousand Years Wide
-The Day I Tried To Live
-Spoonman
-4th of July
10/10 taste.
Slaves and bulldozers is my shit! I like Birth ritual too.
Black rain is also spectacular
Rusty Cage for sure. Great headbanger.
They did Rusty Cage on Patreon. Not totally in love with it.
Soundgarden Superunknown is the greatest rock album of the 90s and one of the greatest in rock history. Just my opinion. A start to finish listen and pretty much every song could of been a single. Im 41 and have listened to it probley the most of any album ever and just can't get sick of it its so so good!
Chris Cornell is my favorite vocalist in rock music! Say Hello 2 Heaven, Burden in my Hand, Steel Rain, and Outshined are some good tracks that highlight how good he really was at singing and writing songs.
I've seen a lot of good Soundgarden recs on here, but one rec I haven't seen (for some reason?) is Blow Up the Outside World. INCREDIBLE song.
tbandido Definitely! I think it’s a top 5 song for them.
Agree. Great song.
These reaction channels are just flooded with the same handful of radio hits/singles and they often never get to the really good meat.
I requested it in patreon 👍
And pretty noose!!
Depression is mental illness, and it's no joke. May he rest in peace.
Depression isn't a "mental illness", it's a perfectly natural and rational response to living in an extremely depressing and unnatural world.
@@buckdich1 It is very much a mental illness. Don't disregard it just because you don't understand it.
@@buckdich1 it's as natural as anything, but that doesn't mean it's healthy. Therefore it's an illness
@@fellonblackdays9 I don't think he'd be saying that if he didn't understand it
Pitch black in your Soul, a death gravity and you know that it will erase your Life Energy Piece by Piece. It is a Long struggling and mercyless
Ryan’s like “damn, this music is so sad“
Hahaha. Yep. this genre was not happy fun time music. It was intentionally the opposite.
I rank Superunknown as one of the best albums ever. From start to finish great songs
My favourite vocal performance from Chris Cornell is on Beyond the Wheel. Very dark, very heavy, and he sings the melody at 3 different octaves! And beyond!
A great Soundgarden song I would like to see you react to is 'The Day I Tried to Live'
Beat me to it. Best opening lines ever too.
Limo wreck feels like a twin sister for The Day I Tried to Live to me, I love both! =)
You boys continue to put out quality content. Thank you!
This song grew on me and became my favorite Soundgarden song. It builds so well.
A wise man once said
“Grunge is just Metal without all the hairspray”
@Shockheadd45 Doom-punk-metal.
Heroin metal
The drugs, the overdoses, the suicides, the heady times, the environment in Seattle of darkness, rain, cold, tons of drugs especially heroin. The death of the singer of Mother Lovebone, The post of Kurt Cobain's suicide and death and its impact on the whole community.
alan wood. got would aic far behind candle box and temple of the dog as tributes to him. pretty late and im pretty drunk. fairly ceratin 2 members pof mother love bone atre founders of pearl jam. also im ure i missed osme other songs as well.
It is the suicide capital of the country.
Mother Lovebone
Kurt Cobain "Suicide"
Deaths were outcome of their formae mentis
This track to me was just essentially a modern day blues track, simple, expressive, and raw regarding pain, its quite a subtle one, grew on me over time, its brilliantly arranged imo. the production choices on this are brilliant
it's a slow burn to be sure, but where it ends up is worth the trip. i really love the evolution of the guitar and bass at the end
Imagine Superunknown, Dirt, Nevermind and Dookie coming out around the same time... I had an amazing childhood
All pivotal albums of my adolescence.
Ten - Pearljam
And Angel Dust.
He wrote this song about his struggle with depression as a teenager.
@Jordan Simeone weak? Please elaborate, thanks.
@Jordan Simeone ok buddy
It's funny how songs age -- when I first heard this song when it came out, in the 90s, it was an absolute stunner. Stood out from all the other tracks. That bent guitar riff. The groove with those heavy fills. The sludgy, moody, ethereal vibe. The little change to the major key in the last half. And the vocal range.
But I guess, if you're hearing this for the first time in 2019, you've already heard all the copycats and bands that were influenced by them, who polished the sound or were more influenced by other cuts on the record (FOURTH OF JULY is one of the tracks that influenced Deftones and a ton of other bands). And in the end, it doesn't have the same impact.
Cos this song was one of those tracks that everyone was raving about back in the day.😂
He had such a great voice to control his emotions. It's pretty freaking amazing
I remember when I first heard this song i thought “wow what an amazing song about struggling with depression”. I understood where he was coming from. Now when I hear it, it sounds so much darker, almost scary.
Chris' vocal range is well demonstrated in Burden in my hand or Like suicide
Shadow of the sun.
Burden in my Hand and Shadow on the Sun are both great examples of his range.
Birth Ritual, New Damage, Four Walled World.
Ningi they reacted to shadow on the sun already
Jesus Christ pose too. He belts on that.
“Say Hello 2 Heaven” this might be some of Chris’ best work
"Just Like Suicide" and "Say Hello to Heaven" are my favorite songs where Cornell's incredible vocals are on full display. I miss him so much 😢😭
The most unique voice in rock history. RIP Chris
Grunge is a deep rabbit hole. I recommend Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike
and Fugazi - Promises
Yes to Hunger Strike!
Yeah good song as well.
Hunger Strike is very good, but Say Hello 2 Heaven is the real deal.
"Cornell wrote "Say Hello 2 Heaven" as a tribute to his roommate, Mother Love Bone vocalist Andrew Wood, who at the time had recently died of a heroin overdose." - Wikipedia
True story. The lyrics are just ..... Say Hello 2 Heaven is a timeless classic as far as I'm concerned
Anything by Temple of the Dog!
Mother Love Bone - Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns
Soundgarden - Searching With My Good Eye Closed
Nirvana - Lounge Act
o_O
I've *never* seen anyone else pick "Searching" as a high point of the album.... well met, sir! LOL
Three of my favorites!!! Lounge Act & Searching are two vastly under appreciated songs. Great taste.
Try “Like Suicide” the best outtro and spectacular notes that Chris Hits almost in the middle of the song and at the end.
The entire track is mind-bending really from all aspects. It begins very sparse and just explodes at the end. Probably one of Chris Cornell's best vocal performances with Soundgarden...
Follow My Way & Steel Rain from Euphoria Morning are still high points for me too.
@Timo Holmquist that track was partially written by Eleven (Alain Johannes & Natasha Shneider). If you've never heard them, you need to. Fresh Tendrils is probably my favorite track overall on Superunknown btw and I agree, the whole album from front to back is amazing!
twisted view labs shout out to Eleven.
The repetition works because the focus should be on the lyrics that are absolutely incredible.
Chris Cornell - Seasons
My favorite! Especially the studio jam version
YES!
Zackly
I think Matt Cameron's drumming helps fight the repetition of this song with his fills. Great drummer.
Three years ago, I was waiting for the walk sign on an intersection in Greenwood (Seattle suburb) and I looked to my right and, BOOM, Matt Cameron is standing right next to me. I have NEVER been so star struck in my life. I wanted to gush and talk to him, but he was with his kid and I didn't want to bother him. Don't regret my lack of action, but one of the perks to living in Seattle.
Especially growing up here in the 90s. These guys were just everywhere... I saw Layne Staley in a Fred Meyers twice. I saw Chris Cornell and Ben Sheppard and Jerry Cantrell on the street in Ballard. I ate breakfast with Warrell Dane one morning. Ran into Jeff Loomis is a burger place in Shoreline. I really miss that time. It was magical.
i've been watching you guys for almost 3 years now and what excites me to this day is that you have this awesome thirst to learn and experience new music
One of my favorite Soundgarden songs. Very sad that he's gone.
The album opener, “Let Me Drown”.... the first Soundgarden song I ever heard. Amazing musical and vocal performance. Y’all gotta check that one out.
I strongly second Let Me Drown!
Rest in Peace Chris Cornell
I still think it's a shame what happened to him.
Chris Cornell was AWESOME !!!🤘🤘🤘
@henree simp agreed
chris was such a talent and truly a beautiful soul and beautiful spirit that was gifted to the world.
thanks for doing more of chris’s music.
lovvvvve his music.
Temple of the Dog’s ‘Times of Trouble’ showcases Chris Cornell’s vocals beautifully. Temple of the Dog itself is a project dedicated to the late Andrew Wood, singer of one of the Grunge originators, Mother Love Bone. TotD consists of members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, and Times of Trouble is framed on the acoustic riff of Pearl Jam’s song ‘Footsteps’.
Soundgarden was my favorite band for a couple years, Chris is still my favorite singer. It’s been hard for me to listen to them after he died
The Day I Tried to Live is my favorite song from them. Down on the Upside was my favorite overall album from them though and my first experience from them and it was by complete chance.
That album doesn't get the love it deserves. Badmo was was my teenage intro, but every release from Soundgarden has its special moments imho.
RIP Chris. I hope you found your peace. I'm happy you left us some great music.
Soundgarden belong with the greats and Superunknown is near perfection! That voice, with Kim's unique tunings and exotic riffs, Matt's stellar drumming...….the greatest compliment to Soundgarden is how often they have been described as a cross between Sabbath and Zeppelin-don't get any better than that! Damn you, Chris......
I can hear that, Chris' vocals is the Led Zep and the instrumental ambiance is closer to the doom Sabbath brought, amazing analogy!
This track is so prophetic now, knowing how he left us all. Makes it even sadder than it already was. Chris wasn't as deep into the drugs as the other noted grunge artists, I think it was largely deep depressive thoughts, suicidal ideations and the loss of so many close friends to drugs, starting with Andrew Woods death in 1990. Some people just feel, off, always. Disjointed and uneasy with life, I am this way, tons of people are, that's why he resonates with us so much. He puts words to feelings that are so incredibly hard to explain! Thanks for all the great reactions guys!
Oh man, Chris was just a beautiful soul. This is one my favorites by Soundgarden because of the way it pulls me into my own darkness. Sometimes, you just need to give in to that darkness and feel whatever is happening there. His voice is easily one the most beautiful voices in rock n roll. Incredible range.
In my opinion. best Soundgarden groove ever.
Chris is my favorite songwriter. His prose-style lyrics, his use of religious/spiritual metaphors across his work, and his voice. All of that helped him tell the story of pain and suffering, with an undertone of hope. It's really too bad he's gone.
If you're having a very melancholy kinda day, come back to this song. It'll ring all sorts of bells on your head.
Temple of the Dog - say hello to heaven.
Also by them: hunger strike
“Grunge” had a few different sounds, Soundgarden was the Sludge metal Black Sabbath sound, Alice In Chains was pure Metal, Pearl Jam was Folkish Metal, Nirvana was the Punk sound, then you have the experimental metal in The Melvins, the pure Seattle sound in Green River, the hybrids in Mad Season and Temple of The Dog, all great in their own way..
Sludge Soundgarden? Sludge? Where? It’s doom(ish), if at all. And AIC pure metal? Pure? They were forebears of southern metal.
That might make sense if you've heard just a song or two by each, but if you even slightly dig into any of these bands, I'd say that description is doing a big disservice to what they did
Pearl jam was funk
@@usualdosage7287 Pearl Jam is jazzy to me.
Nirvana - alternative/grunge rock
AIC - Bluesy grunge metal/alternative rock
Soundgarden - Grungy soul/alternative rock
Pearl Jam - Jazzy/Funky grunge/alternative rock.
Alice in chains was not pure metal they were grunge just like Pearl jam and Soundgarden there's no way Alice n chains was metal are you kidding me! LMAO I grew up in the 90s
Every time I hear Chris Cornell sing I am even more impressed I am with how good he was
Please please please do Audioslave’s Like A Stone. Chris Cornell singing haunting lyrics like only he can.
Fresh Airacle yes!!!
I am the Highway!!!! Check out Cody Jinks (country/rock kid country radio won’t play) tribute of Highway!!!! Goosebumps
And "Show me how to live"
Yes, and the guitar solo is so cool.
Just do the whole album. No fillers in there.
Super excited for this marathon. The early 90s in Seattle was one of the most fecund and exciting times for music. Such dark, raw, honest creativity all over mainstream media and culture. Iconic bands and artistry. I like this Soundgarden song because you hear all the classic elements of the band from odd times to Persian influences, but subtly and in a very radio friendly package compared to their earlier albums. Cornell shines as always.
It's been a while since I've watched you guys but I have to say I really appreciate not just your enthusiasm how you break it down and talk about what's hitting you both musically and lyrically. Keep up the great work,.
Amazing song, amazing band, amazing singer. R.I.P. Chris. Check out sun shower, and his cover on Nothing compared to you.
Guys, you have to do Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots.
My favourite "Grunge" Song, altough they had moved on to a different Sound by then.
The Riff and the chorus are also my top 5 of all time. It's just so good and it's such a good driving song
hey there best ever driving song 😊
hey there yess, I really hope you guys check this out
There's still debate as to whether STP counts as Grunge given the diversity in their sound.
The outtake was killing me! Can't wait to see what else you have in store for the grunge marathon.
Love it!been cranking this song since it was released and it will forever be a Go To. RIP Chris Cornell 😔
Just stumbled upon your channel. Really dig your vibe you guys. Love your energy. Thank you for doing what you do.
Big Empty - Stone Temple Pilots
Yes! STP had bangers
yessir one of my favorites
Anything from Purple
Rick Schmidt so good, yes
The unplugged version is magnificent!!
To me grunge is just the era of music that exploded in the early 90s and knocked the hair bands and pop artists off the charts.
And then Nu metal came directly after and did the same thing!
Exactly! But I did love the Damn Yankees and grunge killed them lol.
Ryan & George man, I see your message is one of love and understanding man. It’s very much appreciated. Respect
Love your takes on the songs. You guys kick ass.
This entire album is amazing. Title track is my favorite.
Yes it is. My fav is Like Suicide.
Absolutely. 4th of July is dope.
Limo Wreck
Mailman is my favorite
I miss how Seattle used to be , living there back in the 90's pre dot com boom was great. This song brings back a lot of memories
It's been said before your sound quality is on fire!! Production has really grown. It's really nice to jam out and watch your reaction to great songs and now the sound quality makes it great to hear the music.
Love how y’all show the outtakes as well. It adds a much needed element in this
