    Great timing with this video - this is my first winter with carnivorous plants and I've been thinking about dormancy for the past few days. Thanks!

      Hi Oliver, nice videos, Utricularia reniformis is actually a terrestrial, it's part of section orchidioides, but used to be in a different section with humboldtii and a few others.

      i.o pineneedles can i use dry peat it is also acidous just a question before they🤘😎

      pine needles will allow air movement without becoming muddy like Peat. Its also a lot easier to remove in spring. A piece of hessian would do the same job and is easy to come by. Hope this helps.

      Great info thank you. I had this growing in a sand/peat mix and it bumbled along ok. Since potting it into LFS and growstone it has taken off and looks really healthy. I would like some other orchid type (tepui) Utrics but they are damn expensive and hard to come by. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Oliver, I was wondering if you are in the UK? 🇬🇧 if so where? I’m in the South East London Croydon to be exact. I found this video very interesting and informative. Thank you 🙏

    Hi Oliver,
    I'm also fascinated by orchids and carnivorous plants, I've been watching your videos and I'm loving the content you've been producing! Your channel is really exciting and helpful.
    I had a huge collection of exotic plants in Brazil, but I moved in to Berlin last year and had to leave them behind... :'(
    Fortunately I'm starting a new collection here in Europe, but I have NO CLUE about dormancy... Do you think that just a small plastic greenhouse is going to be enough to protect my plants from the cold winter (I have a few flytraps, one Sarracenia and many temperate sundews that I'm growing from seed :D), I don't know what kind of winter climate you have there in the UK, but last winter we got -13°C here in Berlin (and I heard that in some years the temperatures might drop to -20°C for a couple of nights in the year).
    Thank you very much in advance, and keep making your videos, they're great!

    Hi Oliver, just wondering how cold your winters get and how the greenhouse worked for your carnivorous plants? I have a drosera filiformis tracyi and a flytrap, both of which need dormancy. I live in New York, so trying to decide how well one of these greenhouses will protect my plants from the bitter cold that we often get here. Thanks for any advice!

    Hi Oliver, I just watched a video of Rose where she shows some drosera seeds she bought from you on e-bay, do you have any left, I would love to buy some but I couldn't see anything for sale on your e-bay page. Please let me know and thank you in advance!

      +fifi There should be at least 7 separate items on my eBay page. Weird! Yes I have quite a few fresh seeds from this year. Try searching for Drosera coccicaulis seeds on eBay and you should find my items.

      Nope, I can't find it, do you think it might have something to do with the fact I am in Canada? I am willing to cover the postage if is reasonable, please let me know.

      +fifi it might do.. I'm not sure that I can send seeds to Canada due to your countries importation laws. I'm surprised you can't see any of my items. I just ordered my Venus fly trap and 1 drosera capensis yesterday. I’m excited! I heard drosera capensis are tropical sundews, is winter dormancy a thing for tropical plants? I also heard that some sundews live only 1-2 years, is it true?

    • @OliversGreenhouse
      @OliversGreenhouse  6 років тому +2

      +Kenneth Reyes Hi Kenneth. The Venus Flytrap will require a cold winter rest. They will die down to only a few living leaves or even a little bud. D. capensis is basically bullet proof. In the wild they do experience cold spells and may slow down in growth. However, they will grow quite happily without any seasonal temperature change. Just follow care instructions from the ICPS and you should be fine. My D. capensis are about 5yrs old and look as good as always. Some species are short lived. They usually produce an abundance of seed which you can collect for re-sowing. Have fun 👍

      Oliver's Greenhouse my drosera has a flower stalk growing and I got 2 more healthy looking VFTs at lowes(they look fresh out of dormant and freshly placed in the store). The flower stalk is 75% ish of the way before completely straightening.

    • @OliversGreenhouse
      @OliversGreenhouse  6 років тому +2

      The flower stalk on the Drosera will be cool. You can collect seed from it once the flowers have died and dried out. If the VFT's produce flower spikes, cut them off. Otherwise the plants may die after flowering. They just do this, I'm not sure why.
