    can I grow sundews outside in the sun like Venus flytraps and Sarracenia pitchers?

  • @Antoniocool86
    @Antoniocool86 2 роки тому +2

    Can they get root rot if left in water all the time? My Venus fly trap I was told to add water to the tray and let the water completely deplete before adding new water or else it'll get root rot. I've been successfully doing that for 2+ years. Is the sun dew the same or should it always be watered?

    • @TheAbundance1337
      @TheAbundance1337 Рік тому

      @@heathersplants5708 Mine started to get dew after a while, all the dew gets wiped off during transport and it takes time and energy for the plant to make new. Mine died eventually due to me going away on vacation. I was bottom watering it and since it was so hot in my apartment all the water evaporated quickly. But I noticed some bugs on it before I went and it looked very healthy so I would say just let it do its thing and just focus on not letting it dry out. I'm probably gonna buy new ones and try again and be more careful :)

    I really like your videos! I hope you do other carnivorous plants as I'm hoping to start collecting more. I recently learned that Venus Fly Traps are considered "vulnerable" and may become endangered soon. Do you have any advice for conservation? All I find is to make sure that you're not buying poached Fly Traps.

    • @big_scrubb4748
      @big_scrubb4748 Рік тому +2

      yeah unless you live near or in the native range of the plants, it doesn't help conservation too much. Unless the whole wild population dies and the only ones left are in cultivation

    Should I put them indoors when it rains? I have one D. aliciae and two D. capensis that spend most of their time outdoors. It rained last night and lots of the dew has gone from them. I know it will grow back quickly but is it best to avoid them being rained on if possible?

    Unfortunately some temporate sundews are so top heavy that they fall flat on the ground, collecting a bunch of dirt and non-insect objects that I had to mist them to clean their leaves. Especially after a heavy rainy day.
    Edit: Just to clarify from experience, some sundews like the drosera capensis require a certain size in order to eat maxsea 16-16-16 or the leaves will turn brown(the leaves that were fed) or even die.

    In June I bought a drosera graomogolensis and drosera riparia. The specimens were very small. In fact, the riparia I could not actually differentiate from the culture. They are growing but perhaps not thriving. My question is when I should start feeding them. I have given them dilute maxsea but it seems to burn the spatula or leaves and I think they might be too small still. They both produce dew and their color is good. They are inside and under lights in continually wet sphagnum. Thx

    • @venusflytrapworld
      @venusflytrapworld  3 роки тому +1

      That's a good question. Sundews start eating as soon as they are big enough to capture bugs. You could try tiny insects like fruit flies or the xs crickets.
