  • In this video, I will show you how to take root cuttings from Drosera regia (The King Sundew). These plants produce large black roots which can become very long. Wayward roots can be trimmed from the plant with very little detriment. These root cuttings can then be used to grow nee plants which will quickly establish.

    Here are some links to some fantastic sites which contain a lot of data regarding this endangered species.

    What a neat trick for reporting into a bigger pot. Very minimal root stress that way.

    Looks great. I just bought a Drosera capensis alba or cape sundew. I keep checking for insect munching but nothing yet. They were selling 2 at our local orchid open house. I did not know what it was -no tag. Thanks for the videos on these guys.

      Cape Sundews are great. I have two mature plants which are over two years old now and have produced many new plants. The 'Alba' form is by far the prettiest in my opinion. Don't be afraid to feed them once a week with just normal fish food flakes. just a little bit on the tentacles of a leaf will accelerate their growth exponentially. Thanks for watching

    Great video ans information.. I am one that have struggled with this plant but I picked up some helpful info.. I have a Regia that has a straight black root with no runners or fiber on it? Is that a normal root system?

    My new growth decided it doesn't want to finish growing. It's like they started and got stuck and look like they're giving up and dying. Any advice? ......also... my cat ate it today v.v we don't even know how he got up on the shelf cuz there was NO space for him to fit. So I'm really depending on this new growth to save the plant.

    Another great video Oliver. You mentioned Osmacote you give 3 - 4 granules to the plant. is that all you give, and at what intervals.
    Thanks.
    Danny.

      +Danny Davies The Osmacote pellets are slow release and will feed the plant for up to 6 months to a year. You can also place them in Nepenthes pitchers.

    Why a tall thin pot as apposed to a more round pot?

    • @OliversGreenhouse

      Where these plants grow in the wild they have to take advantage of underground springs and seeps. Because it is so hot at the surface for the majority of the time they have developed a deep root system to take advantage of this. I have chosen a deep slender pot to simulate this environment. A large number of carnivorous plants have surprisingly long roots, pygmy sundews especially. Some of these tiny plants measuring only a few centimetres when fully mature can have roots which can extend up to 40 cm. Thanks for watching and commenting

    curious, isn't it advised to repot (anything ) during a dormant period?

    • @OliversGreenhouse
      @OliversGreenhouse  7 років тому +1

      +Mr.Personality My D. regia doesn't get cold enough to go into a dormant phase. I have owned D. regia before and I kept it cold enough that it formed hibernaculum. My D. regia is definitely in active growth at the moment so a good time to repot. Thanks for watching

      Oliver's Greenhouse wait, you do t give it dormancy? detrimental?

    • @OliversGreenhouse
      @OliversGreenhouse  7 років тому

      +Mr.Personality apparently not! It gets down to 15℃ during winter in the greenhouse but no colder. Growth slows until it is almost imperceptible but doesn't cease. I know others who keep this species in highland conditions with no problem. Mine likes it!
