hey rod, an ethics question for you. i was fishing a couple weekends ago on the vedder with a spoon and - no joke - i was snagging chum (even if only briefly) on almost every single cast. i tried mixing up where i was targeting (like upriver versus directly ahead of me), tried mixing up casting distance and reeling speed and lure depth, and it just kept happening. caught two chum by their fins (one dorsal, one tail) and managed to quickly release both, and then switched over to a float + soft bead to see if that would lead to fewer snags (it did). in a situation like that, should a person switch things up tackle-wise or try somewhere else on the river or just keep casting and hoping that the snags stop?
I tie straight braid to an inline swivel sinker. Bobbin on braid. AND a four ft. Mono for leaders don't need to have your lead down by the jig. Lose way to many jigs.
Water was a lot clearer than when I was there in the morning. I tried to catch a chum, but only caught wild coho. I'm glad you spent time on good fish handling, so important! I see a lot of fish with eye infections from scraping on the rocks.
Good morning Rod! Bernie here. I’m an avid salmon angler. This season has been great targeting all species of salmon. Chinook, pink, coho, and yes Chum. I was on the Atnarko, Bella Coola, Saloompt rivers… I was on south Bentic Arm and also fished outside of Ucluelet. Amazing season. Hoping to come down your way to fish the vedder for late season Coho. I’m a Salmon Addict! Is the fishing pretty good right now? I’ve never fished the Vedder. Thinking I might pack up the truck and head down from Williams Lake this morning!!!
i purchased a 10.5 technium 'casting' rod this year and match it with a Penn squall reel, as a downrigger rod for deep water trolling around Campbell River. great rod for this use. a nice alternative to my more traditional 'mooching' rod with Diawa mooching reel.
Nice. I had a chance to try the casting rod for trolling and thought I'd like it since I am already pretty used to it in rivers, but surprisingly I found it quite uncomfortable to use compared to the mooching setup.
Imo flow of water would dictate float/weight sizing significantly more than fish species as you mention in the vid. I use 30g in faster flowing and down to 20g for slow moving water. A properly balanced float with weight will give you the proper feedback/sensitivity to bites. 30g will slow down drift in faster water to sub-surface current speeds better and 20g will allow your rig to flow more naturally in slower moving water. Also find with chum since they're def not gear shy, I stick with 12"-14" leaders and replace once it gets shorter than 8". As long as the jig is at the correct level, leader length/terminal tackle visible usually doesn't matter.
Oh definitely, I should have brought that part up too. For winter steelhead, I'd increase the size of the float as the type of water being fished tends to be faster.
Just curious why were you casting so far across? Looks like a deep run not too far in front of you? I wasn’t there though so Im sure there was a reason. Cheers.
The grass is always greener on the other side. 😂 I was whipping it all the way across because that was where most of the fish were sitting. There was a deep slot in front of me but typically chum and coho salmon love that shallower tailout and slower walking speed current. The bottom had more structure on the other side too (gravel to rocks in various sizes), that's where they like to sit.
Fabulous video Rod 👍🎣👍. My fishing buddy Jay-Roll & I & I, luvd going chum salmon fishing on Stave river. Catch & release manly , 1 or 2 keeper's for for the smoker. Or cook them up for are dogs, are favorite was doing salmon jerky with them 😋. You definitely need a 10ft+ rod on most river, my favorite is the Fenwick HMX rod . I use it for pike fishing here in England now , awesome for lure fishing 🙂😊
Hey Rodney, new sub here. I am from greenback country. Just heading out to BC the weekend of Nov 10th. I want to try salmon rver fisig for the first time. Where would you suggest me to go and what technic? Spoon, spinner or float fishing? TY.
That's near the tail end of the coho salmon season but chum salmon fishing should continue to be productive. I'd float fish with a jig like what I did in this video, or for coho just cast and retrieve spoons and spinners with a spinning outfit.
Another great video Rod! I like how you use a left-hand retrieve bait caster and a right-hand retrieve spinning reel. I know your reasoning behind this, it's just fun to observe other fishermen and their tendencies.
Yeah it's kind of weird lol. I use either right or left handed reels for baitcasting and fly, but for my spinning reel it's always the right hand because I am just so used to the smooth retrieve for lures with that hand.
Ive seen some pretty egregious treatment of Chum and Pink Salmon here in WA. Plenty of intentional snagging. A lot of folks punt them into the rivers as hard as they can. It’s awful stuff. Thanks for continuing to advocate for proper etiquette and treatment of fish!
Great video as per usual Rodney.my question is they have opened up the Fraser river to bar fishing now.Is it worth trying out bar fishing? Upper and lower?
The Fraser isn't open yet, but shortly (starting on October 31st in part of the tidal, and rolling opening dates as you go uptream). Fishing will most likely be slow, but hard to say during a year of good abundance like this year! 😊
You ever been chewed upon by as chum??? Tried to remove That hook? By your fingers! Gotta use plyers. Because it dangerous. Second ten seconds isn't nothing. On a chum I've caught hundreds in a Day. They swim right off. I only harvest them for eggs and my nephews garden. Same with pinks. Mostly catch and let' Go.
Depending how the fish is hooked, I make that judgement whether I use a pair of pliers or not. In this case, the jig was barely at the corner of the mouth so a quick pop was all that was needed.
I’d love to see more chum videos! They’re pretty fun, especially when you can’t catch a coho to save your life😆 And they taste pretty decent, almost like mountain whitefish. I was pleasantly surprised.
Just a thought from the other side of the Atlantic … re your missed bites … is it possible the Salmon or other species are hitting that orange bead you have on thinking its an egg … rather than hitting the jig ??
It's possible, but the weight is sitting right beside it too. All those bites I missed in the video, I was really slow on the hook-up, it was just so far away and my reflect isn't as good as it was 20 years ago lol. I know when we fish in lakes, quite often the trout would hit the swivel instead of the chironomid fly below it.
@@FishingwithRod It was just a thought :) I arrive over there on Thursday n fishing from Friday so really looking forward to it... gonna bring some black beads with me just to try :)
Arriving here on Thursday? Nice! Chilliwack River has not been fishable due to rain since I filmed this, but it shouldn't take too long to recover. The weather forecast is looking pretty good, fingers crossed.
@ had a fantastic trip, loads of King, Chum, Coho and even Sockeye on the Harrison. Also managed 4 Sturgeon to 8’ on the Fraser … what a place you have on your back doorstep the fishing is amazing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Omg finally someone understands, dude the river i fish at its every single cast! And I fly fish, chum will literally bite anything, sometimes I even see them come to the surface for them 😭 Great video btw
Hey to be honest but if you look across the river from you????? You will be able to see that what is standing in the tree line!!! Look at the tree line
I can't remember the names of my rods, however, with the big fish, I have better luck setting the hook and keeping it on the line if I use the stiff rod. It doesn't cast as well but that can be dealt with by adding weights. Your thoughts? Thanks Rod. I always enjoy your videos. Doesn't the depth of the water dictate the leader length?
Although fun, I have come to regard fishing for food the only path to take in regards to other animals, who have a right to go about their business without being bothered. I have fished my whole life and am now 72 years of age. I still fish almost daily until I have canned and frozen enough to keep me fed, and then it's over for the year. Please consider a change in your attitudes toward other animal who share this world with us.
Thanks Brian, definitely. I can appreciate that comment. I think it's just the evolution of an angler. I am somewhere in between now, but most of the time I find myself heading out to fish so I can harvest what I catch instead of exclusively catching and releasing them. In the end it's up to the individual to make that decision based on the information he or she absorbs throughout life. I don't have a problem with anyone who participate in a legal catch and release fishery as long as they understand the impacts on the resources. In this particular case, the fishery allows harvest of chum salmon, and the point is more about being selective on what you harvest so you don't end up keeping one that isn't desirable for eating and wasting it.
Yeah, I totally agree with you Rod. I wish people would pay more attention to this fishery. Maybe a video on how to smoke it or other recipes with Chum salmon could help anglers to appreciate this fish a bit more
I think that people hate on chum because they expect it to cook and taste like other types of salmon. If you smoke it or treat it like any white fish (cod, rockfish, etc), it is perfectly fine.
@@jorgemartinez-compains8369 here’s a video about how Japanese people celebrate chum salmon, salt cure for 4-5 days and air dry for at least one week, then grill. I tried this recipe here in 2022, it tastes better than fresh coho: ua-cam.com/video/DLaaqv1Tykg/v-deo.htmlsi=VCmhVd3Aw_Y80YZ3

I broke my fishing rod just same as you to grab the fishing line when fish was on the other end.
Yeah just gotta make sure that line is loosened up once fish is in your hands to take all that pressure off the rod.
Great video. I’m new to BC (Vancouver Island) and your videos have been a great education on salmon. Thanks so much.
You're very welcome! I'm happy to hear that.
Got a 20 pound chum and it tastes amazing!!! Not fishy at all!! No clue why people think they are gross!
Woohoo!

You can do that too, as long as the depth of the water where you're fishing is quite a bit deeper than 4ft.

Fishing is not bad here but it's not comparable to all those places you've fished this year, which are way better!

If you are trying to get someone into salmon fishing, bring them to stave river it’s jam packed with chum and coho
C &R is one thing. How the fish is handled before release is so important to reduce mortality. Thank you for sharing this advise. Tight lines !
Great video Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍
Great video rod, how to figure out what depth the jig should be at?
That would depend on the depth of the run. It usually takes adjusting the float a few times to get it right.
beads work really well for chums too, no need for jigs
Jigs work too well to even try beads 😆
@@mrvaj2021 so it’s mostly about the level of confidence
