Rod! Great video, I loved it! Days at the river are so much more than just simply fishing. The time you take to share your knowledge about fishing, the value and unique nature of different salmon species, and the importance of protecting the water shed are just a few of the take aways from this season. Thank you for your stewardship, welcoming novice anglers like myself into this community makes me excited for many more fishing seasons to come. Count me in for ice fishing!! Haha My feet are freezing just thinking about it 😆
Thanks for tagging along this past month Jenna! 😊 Your persistence and curiosity at the river got me super excited. 😄 I look forward to bringing you out to some ice fishing outings. We will be watching the fishing doc slaying those trout on the ice like what my dad did at the river haha...
This was the first year I really dedicated a lot of time to salmon fishing, thanks to you! Only caught 2 coho and several chums - most trips I was out the entire day with no bites or anything. Can't wait for next year - hopefully I'm more successful. Will try steelheading this year too... doubt I'll have any luck but we'll see.
That's great Alexander! It'll only get better as you pile up more info from each trip. I like to match the river conditions, time of the season to previous trip results to guess where the fish may be.
Loved the cooking segment - really happy to see all the fish used. I caught some coho on the fly in the Chehalis this season. After having a section of filet frozen for two weeks we made nigiri sushi, and with the peeled off skin we put some butter in a frypan and fried the skin and ate it like potato chips. It was delicious!
That sounds great! It's been a long time since I've used coho salmon for nigiri/sashimi. I should do that again. The last few years we have been spoiled with red chinook salmon which have a much higher fat content. We just had some coho gravlax last night, we're too spoiled here.
Hi Rod , when u process fish, I would recommend put paper towels under the fish, to prevent slip while holding sharp knifes. I didn’t try fishing this season yet, due to COVID-19. But your video already took me on the journey. Nice music! Thanks for great videos , as always👍

Aaaaw I’m so happy for Jenna, she finally got one - her hard work paid off!! And yes it was definitely a hard season, but nonetheless, it is a very productive and promising fishery, I feel very lucky to live in BC. I can totally relate to how you felt when you lost that coho 😟 one day, I got one too, and right as I was reeling in... the wind.. it was so strong, it blew my line around the tip of my rod, never happened to me before, it was the first time.... so I lost the fish. A big one too! But luckily I did still land one that day as well ☺️ another time, it was so cold and wet, I couldn’t reel the centerpin properly - every time I set the hook, I feel the fish pulling, I lose it, because my hand is too cold to react lol 😂 I tried to steam a coho jack this year with some soy sauce mixed with hot oil poured on top and green onion and ginger. It taste absolutely amazing, so sweet and tender, melts in your mouth! ☺️☺️🐟🐟 tight lines! Thanks for sharing as always 😀
Last year, the brown trout and Atlantic salmon run was incredible on the Saranac River from Lake Champlain in Northern New York. This year has been the opposite. I have tried several times with no catch, only saw 2 fish hit the surface, and haven’t seen ANYONE else catch a fish. We had a drought this summer, so that may be part of it. Or it could just be an off year for spawning. Guess I will just have to go to Aldi’s.
For these anadromous species, the oceans really determine how the stocks would do. Our coho salmon return to this particular river is pretty similar to previous years, but the average size of the fish has been much bigger. For many years now, we have seen fish in the 2 to 6lb range, but this year that average has been bumped up to 6 to 8, with the occasional 10 to 12 like the one seen in the video. About 15 years ago, I encountered my biggest, a hatchery fish too, which was easily over 15. To this day I am beating myself up for not weighing it.
Hey rod, just wondering where u find these secluded spots on the Vedder. Every time I used to go it was packed with people and wasn't much fun, I'd definitely go out more if I could find a spot like this and like the spots in ur other videos
Hi Kostic, pretty simple really. A lot of walking and not stopping at spots which are packed with people. There will be many days when you will fish secluded spots with no fish, then some days you'll hit them just right.
Rod, I've been watching your videos and trying to figure things out, I would not have much of a chance without your content, thank you for sharing. Tried bait casting and coho spoons. I managed to hook a 1 Pink (spoon) and 1 coho (roe) after long days of trying. QUESTION: On the spoon fishing, I understand to cast upstream, let it drop to the right depth and then slow retrieve....my question is do you let it keep hitting bottom as it drifts down river? I was doing that when I caught the pink. Otherwise how do you know what depth? Also, will Spring and Chum go for spoons as well? Thank you for your help!
I don't let my spoon hitting bottom as it drifts down the river. I also only use my spoons if the current is or slower than walking speed. I like to cast far enough upstream so most of my retrieve happens either in front of me or at 1 o'clock downstream from me. Any further down I feel it is rather pointless for coho salmon, and I'd just bring the spoon back really fast and recast. Coho salmon will chase spoons more than other species. They often follow closely behind the lure so watch what's going on behind your lure as it approaches you. The lure does not have to be near the bottom for this to happen. Chinook and chum salmon can also be caught on lures, but not as often.
Great video! I like the company that you keep...I see you brought the " Fishing Doctor" along. Great guy he is. He's helped out my son with tips on ice and fly fishing.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures we messaged back and forth on messenger a couple years back. I had posted on fb that I was looking for someone interested in going to Haida gwaii. You seemed very tempted lol.
I have a 1988 22' grady-white seafarer that I have restored. In the process of rewiring and plumbing to complete the project. Perhaps we could arrange a trip this coming season? Plenty of room on board.
Wish I could join you for fishing. Even with the rain the place is just beautiful. I am glad you showed how to use everypart of the fish because most of the time I see dead bodys with lots of meat wasted just because people take only the eggs Thank you love your videos btw 😄
Yep you can't actually kill a fish and only take the eggs while dumping the rest of the fish at the river. That would be considered as poaching and should be reported.
I enjoy watching your videos. Would love to fish up there in Canada some day. I use paper towels or my FilletAway fish mats to keep my fish from sliding around when filleting. I was cringing waiting for you to cut yourself. Just an observation. Nice job tho. I try to not waste fish as well. I scrape the backbone, in behind the collars, and save the belly meat. I package it all together and use it for chowders, salmon tacos, pasta dishes, etc...
Thank you Chris! Surprisingly I have only slliced myself once while filleting and that was around 17 years ago while cutting up a smallmouth bass. I guess I'm pretty used to filleting these salmon on the chopping board so always expecting them to slip around. I will give the fish mat a try though! 🙂
Thanks Sedrick, you should check out www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/index.html where I’ve listed out all the locations and seasons in the Lower Mainland. 👍
It really depends on the stage they are at. The fish which you see in the video had only been in the river for a day or two, perhaps up to a week. Their conditions are no different than the ones which you'd catch in the ocean. Once they are in the river for a longer period of time, approaching spawning, then their conditions start to degrade so you should be selective on what you are fishing for and what you are keeping.
Thank you. I have several videos going over all the setups I use in this video already: ua-cam.com/video/PMOlc9FORPM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/TpZUMufXEnk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/qe2VVDzpnSg/v-deo.html
I don’t do any of that with my coho but that being said I’ve never caught one 🤣. But that’s normally what I do with my salmon just do a couple steps a bit differently. Well guess I’ve caught two coho but they were in a lake and were accidental. Keep up the awesome videos.
I've always heard that the vedder gets super crowded around salmon season (heard it referred to as "combat fishing"). Is it really that bad? Looked ok in the video!
Yep it certainly can get very busy on the Vedder but with some leg work you can always find some quiet spots. That was fairly busy in the video but everyone was having a great time and staying positive so it wasn’t a big deal.
Hi Rod, thanks for all your content over the years..my question is this; out of all the river species of salmon which would you say is most accessible for young adults? This year we have pink which I suspect you’’lol recommend but this coho fishing looks a little to challenging for My son in terms of probability of catching something. Thanks!
I would say coho are just as accessible for everyone as pink salmon, but they are definitely a lot more challenging to catch for a couple of reason. The first one would be numbers, there are way more pink salmon than coho. Second is that coho discriminate way more than pink salmon, the bites can come on and off with no apparent reasons and they can get picky on what they want. I would say, this fishery in the Tidal Fraser River is the most accessible one for all ages.
Hey Rod, love your videos. Last year I caught my first coho on a Gibbs Koho. No luck this year, but have caught a few chum. When chucking spoons for coho, do you recommend fast or slow moving water? Shallow runs or deeper pools? It looks like the water you were in at the beginning was pretty shallow and fast moving? Do you "drift" your spoon?
I preferred coho water is "walking speed" current. If you find a run like that, with depth in the 3 to 5ft range, and a mix of small gravel to baby head sized rocks, then chances are you are going to find coho if the timing is right. The speed of my retrieval is based on the current. My goal is to always get that spoon down to just above where the coho are sitting so they can see it. Coho salmon are known for following the lure, so once I get into that zone I'd keep retrieving until the lure is back to my rod tip. More often than not they'd strike just within feet from you after following the lure for awhile.
@@FishingwithRod Thank you so much for the tips! Really appreciate you taking the time to provide such a detailed reply. Tight lines good sir and looking forward to the next video!
The two are the same system. Most of the time people refer to the section downstream from the Vedder Crossing Bridge as the Vedder River while the upstream as the Chilliwack River, but really the correct name for the entire system is the Chilliwack River.
Thanks rod! I’ve been throwing roe, spinners, and jigs and the I’ve been out multiple times this season and I see fish jumping and splashing around everywhere but they just really don’t wanna bite. only 14 and sometimes it’s hard to get out fishing but even with no fish I’ve been enjoying it! 🎣
See you out there oscar! Coho are fun but they can be absolutely frustrating for the reasons you just described above. Those behaviours are not unusual, so don't feel bad that you are not getting those bites. These fish can turn on and off like a light switch.
There is no waste to any salmon: 1. Head - cut in half just like you did in the video and broil in the oven seasoned with salt. 2. Bones - pan sear or broil in oven. 3. Roe - get them off from the membrane with boiled water, rinse a few times in cold water, marinade in soy+sake, you have Ikura to make great sushi bowl. Or simply marinade in salty water. 4. Sperm - battered in the mixture of egg+water+flour, deep fry, makes the best tempura. 5. Stomach - save a bunch in the freezer, and makes good stir fry with spices.
Hmm my spin n glo bar fishing experiences are limited so not sure. I'm pretty sure the Fraser is quite dirty right now anyway, making spin and glo fishing pretty difficult.
Let me know how it goes! The bar fishing tehnique is slowly fading away as most Fraser River fishing opportunities are lost, so it's nice to see some are still interested during the short openings which we are getting.
@@FishingwithRod Ruptured my achilles during the summer :\ I did scale around the rocks at the Thompson a couple months back with a booty but it was hard. Just starting to get back into the outdoors! Mushroom don't fight as hard as fish ;) Patiently waiting for yours/Kitty videos to get me pumped up!
newbie question 🙋 there's a part in the video where you said, "a school of coho is coming" or something like that. how do you know that a school is coming?
If you look at the run (ideally with a pair of polarized glasses), you should be able to spot them moving upstream, even in low clear conditions during the day. You’ll see more movement when water is higher, but they may just continue on. When water is lower, you might see fish moving in and settling down again at the tailout of the run. Once they settle down for awhile, it’s not unusual to see bites coming on.
Well, the ones in the video - Gibbs Croc and Koho spoons are my go-tos. Look for coho where the chinook salmon are not, they like quiet, undisturbed places.
I actually use either right or left hand reels, sometimes I switch, sometimes I use the correct hand... It really depends on what I'm fishing for and where I am fishing...
Yum! 😉 For our fish broth, I mainly make miso soup with it. That is like THE dish we always have ever fall when salmon return to rivers, and so so good especially when it is cold outside.
Great video, and it don’t matter how you fillet your fish, you eat everything and waste nothing, that’s how it is in our household too. Salmon is too good to waste.
I want to get into coho fishing here in Washington. What type of rod and reel is good to use. I don’t know how to use a casting reel just spinning reel.
They only thing that makes salmon hard to catch is the lack of besides the ordinary challenge of it. Your lucky to have a hatchery nearby to give you eaters.

Thanks for sharing as always 😀
lol Sammi, I think we all remember the fish we've lost as vividly as the nice ones we've landed. I have plenty of stories like that too haha.
Great vid Rod thanks for sharing your adventures👏😎
Thanks Ernie! 😊
@@FishingwithRod Thanks Rod!
Great video! I like the company that you keep...I see you brought the " Fishing Doctor" along. Great guy he is. He's helped out my son with tips on ice and fly fishing.
He's great, except he catches too many fish around me sometimes. Haha... Thanks for watching Tom!
Thanks Tom, i may have to start fishing dull hooks if I want to stick around, haha. Can't wait for ice season.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Hahaha...
I rekon the heads the tastiest part:) our salmon run in new zealand is not far away getting hypd up waching your vid bro! lol
Great! Thanks for watching! We want to come down and fish for kingfish and snapper one day. 😅
Beautiful color of that fish! Great eats
Thansk Craig!
Wish I could join you for fishing. Even with the rain the place is just beautiful. I am glad you showed how to use everypart of the fish because most of the time I see dead bodys with lots of meat wasted just because people take only the eggs
Thank you love your videos btw 😄
Yep you can't actually kill a fish and only take the eggs while dumping the rest of the fish at the river. That would be considered as poaching and should be reported.
Rod your literally my icon and hero
😊
1st year on the vedder. i made about 20 trips out and only caught 1 coho. Hopefully more next year!
Keep going! 😊
Hey Rod! great video! i am wondering if there is any good fishing spots in January in either vedder or any where close?
Thanks Sedrick, you should check out www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/index.html where I’ve listed out all the locations and seasons in the Lower Mainland. 👍
Thank you Rod, always amazing!!!
Thanks Simone! Well, not always amazing, but try to be anyway lol. ;)
Love your videos hope i can catch something on the vedder eventually been there about 10 times
Keep trying Justin! It'll happen.
They taste amazing. I was supper lucky an landed one 28in first day on my first salmon trip to ny.
28 in is a beauty!
Fabulous video Rod 🎣😉
Thanks again Andy!
I thought that once they start the migration they are not tasty anymore. We have Coho salmon in Ontario too, but they were introduced from BC.
@@FishingwithRod Thanks, it makes sense.
I loved the video, but it would be great if you shared your set up. Thanks and good fishing

I don’t do any of that with my coho but that being said I’ve never caught one 🤣. But that’s normally what I do with my salmon just do a couple steps a bit differently. Well guess I’ve caught two coho but they were in a lake and were accidental. Keep up the awesome videos.
Thanks Dave! 🙂
Great video only two Jacks for me this year try again next year
Yep! Keep working on it! 😊
I love your vids and I went vender river last week
Thanks Matt! 🙂
This year was so enjoyable last year only landed 3 hatchery this year landed 52 hatchery coho
That's awesome! Good to hear the success!
Thanks rod it was a great video 🙏
Thanks for watching!
Awesome job!!
Thanks!
125lbs, thats just my leg!!
😂😂 was this that day we were supposed to meet up?
🤣
Which part of the video? 😆 I think the segment on where I lost that fish on the spoon was the day before we were supposed to meet up.
@@FishingwithRod that was a great, looong video!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching the videos.
Hey Rod, is the Vedder River and Chilliwack River the same river? If so, where does the Vedder River start from the Chilliwack River?
The two are the same system. Most of the time people refer to the section downstream from the Vedder Crossing Bridge as the Vedder River while the upstream as the Chilliwack River, but really the correct name for the entire system is the Chilliwack River.
Awesome video rod! I’ve been trying all season and haven’t caught one yet 😥
Don't give up! It'll happen!
Thanks for the advice rod! I’ll keep trying🎣
👍
I noticed you egg looped a spawn bag. Curious why you did that?
ua-cam.com/video/D1MV1tNS4qs/v-deo.html
There is no waste to any salmon:
What spot is that on the vedder
Great video but do you have any tips for spin n Glo colors for the fraser. Hoping to be able to go out there soon.
Hmm my spin n glo bar fishing experiences are limited so not sure. I'm pretty sure the Fraser is quite dirty right now anyway, making spin and glo fishing pretty difficult.
@@FishingwithRod Ok thank you very much. Have a great evening
Let me know how it goes! The bar fishing tehnique is slowly fading away as most Fraser River fishing opportunities are lost, so it's nice to see some are still interested during the short openings which we are getting.
I can't wait to get out there next year
Still three weeks of fishing left Tessa! 😉
@@tessa0104 Right! I think you mentioned that before. 😕 Well next season it is!
newbie question 🙋 there's a part in the video where you said, "a school of coho is coming" or something like that. how do you know that a school is coming?
If you look at the run (ideally with a pair of polarized glasses), you should be able to spot them moving upstream, even in low clear conditions during the day. You’ll see more movement when water is higher, but they may just continue on. When water is lower, you might see fish moving in and settling down again at the tailout of the run. Once they settle down for awhile, it’s not unusual to see bites coming on.
Nice video thanks
Thanks for watching again!
First year on the vedder only got 1 chinook and a couple chum, any tips on where to look for coho and any lures I could use?
Well, the ones in the video - Gibbs Croc and Koho spoons are my go-tos. Look for coho where the chinook salmon are not, they like quiet, undisturbed places.
I have only seen guys do that with a bait caster lol throw with the right, witch to the left and reel with the right lol that’s a first for me
What can I say, I'm a little special.
I actually use either right or left hand reels, sometimes I switch, sometimes I use the correct hand... It really depends on what I'm fishing for and where I am fishing...
when was this filmed?
You watched the whole video right...? lol
Great vid as usual:)
Thanks!
what spinning reel did you use rod?
That is a Shimano Stradic 2500.
Haven't hooked up on a Coho yet all I can catch are chum.
Keep trying. Also try fishing where chum salmon are not. Coho salmon tend to be spooked easily and are found in spots which are not disturbed.
Salmon head, skeleton, belly meat are great for making hot and sour soup...kind of like the Thai Thom-Yum soup.
Yum! 😉 For our fish broth, I mainly make miso soup with it. That is like THE dish we always have ever fall when salmon return to rivers, and so so good especially when it is cold outside.
I could only catch one Jack coho this entire season, what methods would you recommend. I usually bait fish but willing to try something new.
Bait, lure, they all work under the right situation. I like to switch up between the two.
Great video, and it don’t matter how you fillet your fish, you eat everything and waste nothing, that’s how it is in our household too. Salmon is too good to waste.
Definitely! Thanks for watching. 👍
its easy if you go to the rapids and drift into their holding spots
👍
I want to get into coho fishing here in Washington. What type of rod and reel is good to use. I don’t know how to use a casting reel just spinning reel.
Check out this video on the spinning setups I use for coho salmon:

Hullo
Love the vids.👍
Thanks!
First year I tried salmon fishing the Vedder saw a bunch get caught and got a small jack myself but nothing significant
Keep going! It'll only get better!
hey rod is a good lure a jig bait for coho?
Not sure what do you mean by jig bait
They only thing that makes salmon hard to catch is the lack of besides the ordinary challenge of it. Your lucky to have a hatchery nearby to give you eaters.
Yep we are very blessed. 😊
fishing with rod where is this in chiliwack river?
There are about half a dozen spots shown in the video. Locations rarely matter, timing does.
@@FishingwithRod thank you rod great video i always saw your video and i went 7 times on vedder but i got nothing 😔
