  • Non-profit founder Weh Yeoh wants more international charities to embrace redundancy. Through recognising the difference between addressing symptoms and solving problems, international charities can create a space for local people to create solutions to their own problems. This requires a complete rethink of the purpose of international charity. Is it to perpetuate their own existence, or to successfully exit? Co Founder & CEO, Umbo This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Finally somebody who questions how the good work that charities do, can be done even better and in a sustainable manner. I so often see countries not progressing because international charities lack exit strategies, just look at Haïti. Doing good work is great, but making a country self sufficiënt should be the goal.

Hit the nail right on the head.
I have had this discourse and many like it with several of my colleagues in the development/humanitarian aid/charity sector and I think you've summed up the problem very well.
    Liked and sharing!

Quite an enlightening talk. Never saw the issue this way, and now I think Weh Yeoh is correct. Working this way, and making this the norm - that is, more and more charities ensuring towards working in a way that they become redundant after setting up a process of sustainability - would mean that only those charities/non-profits/NGOs that really want to work to solve a problem would be appreciated, and hence funded (the important part) and not just any and every charity/non-profit/NGO, many of which just want to gobble up funding for their own ends.

Yesterday I ate Panda Express because I was feeling like really living it up. They ask everyone of us “useless feeders at checkout if we want to donate a dollar to “Children’s hospitals” Charities aren’t to be generally trusted & I wonder why a world full of a handful of trillionaires thousands of billionaires and millions of millionaires do the people working paycheck to paycheck need to bear the brunt of caring for hospitals for sick children? It’s a rhetorical question of course.
    Thank you
    God bless

What about the bureaucrats and paper pushers and fundraising goons for the charities if those charities actually solve problems permanently towards their own redundancy?

I expect this of international charities and always have. That is why I don't understand companies like World Vision who work to bring running water to places in Africa. I see them as a failure.

Aren't some of them like clever corporations? Look at the executive salaries and perks, or the administration "expenses"???

So we need ratios: instead of number of children seen in a year, wells or girls in school, it should be expressed as a ratio of children seen over children requiring attention, wells constructed over number wells needed and girls enrolled over girls who are denied schooling. When the second number in the pair is negligible, work is done.

Charities are business and are evangelical. They are there to line their pocket and convert. Every charity needs to register themselves with the local government. This registration should be for a finite period, and stands cancelled after the period. They should file their audited annual return of revenue and expenditure. Failing which their CEO should be jailed.
Diners should ask for audited accounts, even web based would do. See the percentage of money spent on charity to amount spent on self propogation. If the ratio is greater than 1.7 consider donating otherwise not.

International charities will never leave because they create employment for their citizens in those countries that's why those countries are never developed to the point of being independent from the charities.

With all due respect your talk is rambling away for 16 minutes. Please get a move on with it.
As with any large organization charities tend to develop a habit of becoming bogged down in their efforts. I don't believe they know how to reach their objectives in many cases. Unless charities earn their keep, it's all too convenient to take a back seat and let the donations roll in. Charities in many cases are unsustainable, it's a wonder that organizations can take this to international levels.
