Sometimes it can be a haven in a storm. Religion is made up of people. When you get a few good truly well meaning people in a group there is a lot of good they can accomplish. I've lived it. I understand the sadness and bitterness people might feel towards churches, but it doesn't have to be that way.. and that starts with us, people who don't agree on everything but are willing to come together.. to make a difference.. find the people who are that for you in whatever form that takes. For my son it is his LARPing group, it doesn't matter.. It is well worth it.. Faith Hope and Love, in whatever form or shape they take are and always have been truly powerful and positively transformative.. if you want it to be.. the choice is and always will be yours.. the heart of belief..
We are living in “in between times”. At the moment our world is becoming more and more secular. And, I think this lecturer and former pastor has realized this, but has had difficulty leaving his faith behind completely due to strong early indoctrination into religion. As we advance ourselves we realize that what seemed like supernatural before is really not like he mentioned. Just think for a moment how many other worlds there are that believe in gods, demons and ghosts like we do. On Earth alone there are tons of religious practices, so if there is a “God” someone is going to be very disappointed in the end. My theory is basically that religious practice thrives throughout the universe in some form or fashion until that civilization reaches a breaking point in intellectual/technological advances that it no longer sees religious practice as needed to answer life’s mystery.
The cure to your anxiety about being in between is to stop being in between. It's really quite simple. Recognize that there is no reason to believe in gods. Dump the bad way of thinking called "faith" (belief in something without evidence or even against evidence). Then take a look at humanism and Zen for non-religious guidance. 1. Confess the truth - there are no gods. 2. Never stop growing. Keep learning basic science. Do not deny science you do no not understand, figure out why what the scientists thinking it is true. 3. Be a Specialist (Not a Generalist) - sure. 4. Hold on to what still fits. - but dump "faith" 5. Grieve what you have lost. No. Do not morn lost faith.
@dev0n james People who think there is a god are deluded, as Dawkins pointed out in his book, The God Delusion. Faith is the absolute worst way to go about doing things. If someone believes in a god and has 'faith' their brain is ruined and they are a threat to everybody. They may not fly an airplane into a building, but with the right religious guidance they may very well do so. There's the box. It is not narrow, it covers all the religions. You tell me why I should accept shoddy thinking (ie faith and belief in gods).
@dev0n james that's a good point. By expressing my opinion on these kind of forum, I can test if my ideas hold up. Usually they do because they are first and foremost based on science. I'm willing to listen to opposition views.
@@robshillinglaw9806 Ok, show me this creator. Where do I look in the real world for it? NO BOOKS ALLOWED, we know that the bible is NOT a good source of information about reality.
Something that caught my attention about his delivery is that he sounds EXACTLY like Jehovah's Witness preachers giving sermons. Most JWs think they are totally different from non-JWs. Nope.
Yet, you see people with no concept for religion like Che Guevara - who in his fight to stablish a distopia- gladly speaks out and says: "The intrinsict hate for our enemy must bound us to become a cold machine killer". People act based on their individuality.
@@MaybeKentex People in groups are vulnerable to "group think".. but one person can also change people's minds when a message of Hope and care gets twisted into one of hate. Hate is taught. Love is innate.
"Asking, 'Where is god in all of this?' is a perfectly reasonable question." I disagree. I believe God is unnecessary in all of this. He seems to basically be arguing for this without stating it. Some of his ideas and practical advice are really excellent. I just don't see deity worship as effective in being part of any true social progress. For all of his "let go," I think he digs his heels in when comes to religion - the thing that he's spent so many years of his life studying. Why must religion stay around to embrace the changes? Why, instead, wouldn't religion become the thing of which we let go? Perhaps it will, or at least the supernatural component of it. Ben seems like a swell guy, though.
Religion is an ideology. Just like Nazism, Socialism etc. No human ever had a life without religion or something we believe in. Ideologies are as old as humans. Ideologies always tried to explain what the world is made of and ideologies always tried to show ways how the world is getting better. Why should we let religion go? Another ideology is coming straight away and the most terrible ideologies, Nazism and Communism always said that they were modern and let religion go.
"Ideologies" is so vague, it's almost meaningless. The concept can be tied into supernatural, magical thinking, or can stem from critical reasoning, or anything in between. Why should we let religion go? I will re-ask that: Why should we let magical thinking (a/k/a superstition) go? Because it don't serve us, and in fact does more harm than good.
Being flexible is key to surviving cyclical changes.

Ben Lee's schooling failed to prepare him for the real world. A fantastic reason to value self-education.
Religion is monopolisation of faith. There need no middleman between one and his god.
