Avocado is an interesting tree. It loves soil that has good drainage, but also loves to live straight in water :D Just as my seed started to crack, I planted it in soil - to avoid to disturb the roots afterwards.

I think, just continue it in water until you see any damage being done, don't think it'd hurt. I'm actually doing some kind of experiment like that, that I will be sharing one day

@@TroyParry74 Yes! I was sad to see that first little avo root died, but after some time another started to grow beside it. Now it has a mass of strong roots and has grown a tall stem with big leaves. I also set up more seeds and have five more that have grown as much. And when I got up to count them I found one more poking a sprout out! So in total I have seven avo trees in my kitchen window 🥰

    G'day and thank you Scott.
Just discovered your channel and find this video very helpful. Suspect you are an Aussie and that has a special significance for me. Wish I had thought to find info sooner as several really nice specimens did die. However they all lived in water much more than one year. I tried in vain to ask people with large balcony's or gardens to take them but no one could be bothered. I hate when plants die. I have rescued plants and flowering plants from Garbage rooms that people threw away and brought them back to glorious life and to flowering.
For some reason I have luck with the Avocado seeds. Nearly everyone I put in water drops roots and I am in northern europe. I also had lemon and apple seeds sprout but ultimately they died as I did not have the possibility to plant them in their own pots.
I did finally have several that died because I did not have the possibility to plant them in pots. What is interesting is that due to space problems I put several jars out in an empty planter box hanging outside a window. This was Autumn and through the winter here which does go to freezing. I kept watering occasionally and they are all still alive and growing. In this climate and without a proper garden I doubt I will ever have a real tree or fruit but it is my way of giving back to nature. It is terrible to have green fingers and feel so impotent without a large balcony or garden. I finally have a bit of money to buy some pots and soil so I will plant them all but not sure if they should remain outdoors or will survive now indoors. Also not sure which type of earth or mixture they would like.
Plenty of sunlight that side of the flat which for us here is South 😁 That is when there is Sun???
During my year in Australia I collected seeds from many plants and trees there. Among them were seeds from the Wonderful Wattle Tree (here known as Mimosa).
During the time I lived in Munich not long after my return to Europe from Australia I planted some Wattle seeds which sprouted. Then in small pots placed outdoors in a balcony size plastic greenhouse. There were four little trees about 45cm (18in). I was delighted especially as it was cold and gray much of the time on my kitchen balcony. Alas I had to leave them as my next residence was across the Atlantic and I did not know how I could transport them. Still a great sadness and regret of mine.
    Thank you again and cheers..

I started my avocado seed in water on Earth Day 2021. Took forever to crack open and show root. In fact my husband wanted to throw it out! We came back from our family vacation after 4th of July and we finally saw it sprouting up top. Let it grow 12inches, cut in half. Let it grow another 6inches and pruned the baby leaves to encourage stem and root growth (which was gratifying to watch). My husband thought I was crazy. Just last week I finally planted in soil (6 months in watee) and the leaves are back and multiplying. Now my husband likes to slightly rotate the pot every day and see how well it's thriving. 🤞 it'll turn into a lovely house plant and continues to grow big and strong.
I'm debating if I should prune it again in month or so to reinforce energy into the trunk of the tree. This is an indoor plant.
    Any suggestions?

Hi Scot, I have what I call a regular avocado tree and a large Florida avocado tree growing out of my aquarium. They have been growing for perhaps 6 months. The regular (smaller) avocado has grown about five feet to the ceiling but has few leaves and has shed them. So I am thinking about pruning it back and also trying to cut the part I removed from the plant and seeing if I can get the pieces to root also. My larger Florida avocado is not near as tall but has leaves growing all over it. I was watching some videos about bansi avocados and perhaps I will try that. I originally started to hang growing plants in my fish tanks to remove nitrates from the water but very soon found it to be so aesthetic that I found a whole new facet of my (62 year) aquarium hobby. I am not concerned about growing fruit as I live too far north to plant them outside but I want to keep them alive and well. I am currently in the process of moving my fish tanks from the second-story room to the basement where I am building a fish room. It will have a Darter Stream and I plan to plant both seaweed and terrestrial plants in and along it. There will not be much more than four to five feet of growing room to the ceiling so I am thinking of the bansi approach. I want to grow plants all along the stream. Have you seen any of the videos on growing bansi avocados?

I have heard that super Sandy soil mixes are best for planting avocados. I suppose this may allow for any excess water to drain out & not keep the soil moist & cause rot. I have to put mine in soil very soon- like yesterday- but I’m worried about transferring them. July 27, 2023 will make one year in water. It’s the best way to even start, as all the ones in plastic bags just seem to mold no matter what or where the conditions are. I’m in North Carolina, humidity may seem helpful but it’s actually not. Wish me luck- & I wish you lots of luck! 😊

Just found your channel, love the informative video!
I am currently growing an avocado tree, and I've got it in just water at the moment and am very interested if it's possible for it to grow in just water? As I live in a 3rd floor flat so just have the avocado tree and an aloe ferox plant (which I probably need to put in a proper pot at some point as it's still in the plastic one it was sold in) on my kitchen windowsill. It's difficult as I want my plants to grow the best they can but sometimes that means buying certain types of soil, which around where I live are only sold in 35 litre sacks; which, even if I did buy, I wouldn't be able to get it home in my wheelchair and then I'd have a whole bunch of extra soil just laying around my flat.
Any suggestions/advice to help my plant situation is much appreciated as I would like to not kill them haha 😂

I live in Dubai and the temps will be around 50 degrees In The next month but also be very humid(about 60%) Is this a bad time to put my seed outside or should I grow it indoors to start.
I currently have one outdoors and he is doing amazing. He spends more time in the shade and out of the afternoon sun.

I thoroughly enjoyed the video and thankful you shared your knowledge. I'm trying to grow in an area where is water is basic, the soil as well (ph 8.1), so I'm wondering kinda what to do. We're on well wate. If I get water from outside I think it will have slimy feel in very short order. It does as it is from the tap....been pre-soaking my avocado seeds....but probably less so because it goes through a water softener unit. I am thinking now that I certainly don't need to try growing the seeds in the water softened water due to the salt content. Instead, we do purchase RO water, but still filtered from the water supply in our area. SHOULD I add some sort of nutrients to the water even as the seed is trying to grow? This is just in jars as I do not have an acquarium. There is a liquid (organic I would presume) concentrated fertilizer called SuperThrive that comes to mind...or maybe just compost tea? Or should I just use stratight water? HELP?!

My 1st one has been in water since July 27, 2022 :)). But I don’t recommend using tap water, unless you’ve got a well. But recently my roots don’t look too happy. Not sure why so.. but I’m tending to it best I can & keeping oxygen replenished often by adding or changing water out. Using distilled only, as my tap has too much fluoride that it turns the round seed part Pink, every time- but you can rescue them if this happens- get distilled & change it out.

I started my avocado seed off in a bag rolled in a paper towel. I left it in there in a warm dark place until it sprouted. Now that was in early June of 2023. After it sprouted I transferred it to a flower vase with just filtered water My avocado plant is now 11 inches tall as of early August 2023 and the roots are about 7 inches long. I have six big leaves growing. It was doing great, the stem feels strong and the leaves felt good but recently the leaves feel droopy and too soft, any tips? Should I transfer it to a pot with soil already even though it's only been 2 months? If so what soil do you recommend and size pot?

In my experience... Since avocados grow at different rates, we can technically keep an avocado in water for over a yr DEPENDING on the height of it... I have one that's been in water for almost a yr & honestly, it is still the tiniest thing... Until it gets bigger, which may take well over a yr, it will be kept in water... NICELY done as always

My problem with avocado tree in soil is that sooner or later fungus and other bacteria always start to grow up, no matter how draining the soil is and how little I water the plant (even only once every three weeks is enough in winter). On the other hand, all the avocados in water are much healthier for longer time 😅 you need a fertilizer with short releasing activity

If you grow a avocado in a aquarium and let its roots grow into the stubstrate could it still stay in water then? Or will it only get root rot?

    • @CandysGarden
      @CandysGarden 3 роки тому

I believe root rot doesn't occur unless it's in soil. The standing water is what causes root rot... The avocado tree's roots, even in an aquarium's substrate shouldn't cause root rot because it is still living as it were if it were in a cup of water, I just think the aquarium is a lot better because of the nutrients the tree will get from the tank water, in my opinion

Have u tried rinsing well and wrapping in a damp paper towel and putting in a ziplock bag and keep in a dark area. I place in the corner of the tub behind the shower curtail. It works better than the toothpick method . No gnats or water evaporation. When dry just add a little water to the bag. Check after 2 to 3 wks for roots. U can put a lot of seeds in one bag to increase your chances of growth from top and bottom. More common to have roots at the bottom and not a cracked seed and root from the the top , but u will see great results by using at least 6 seeds in one bag if u can. This worked great for me , I have six growing now with leaves starting to open. Be patient and plz let me know how u do. When U get roots put in water cup or bottle use a shower curtain hook that extends over the water container vs toothpicks . Good luck! Peel the skin off too b4 u wrap in the paper towel.
