I finally grew a tree. 3 stories tall. Solo tree first floor in a So Florida condo. Started indoors, of course it's outdoors. North side of bldg. Some avocados are almost 3 lbs. Huge. This year yielded 24 or so. Wow. What a thrill. I've tried my entire life. Since 18yrs old. I'm 70 now. Yummy avocado. Incredible.

This one seems quite pleased in his terracotta pot with his oh so cheery pink-flowered Christmas cactus friend next to him. Thanks Scott!!

Great tips n tricks Scott. Thanks. I have two avocado trees growing started accidentally in my compost bin. Then rescued & planted in pots here in Maryland. They thrive year ‘round in our “sun” room. Not spindly at all at about 40cm. Nice & leafy, one main stem but nodes nice & close. I’m guessing lots of light maintains nodal growth closer. Anyhow, i trimmed the very apical tip off. I'm growing two avocados right now. One using the water method and another one I just planted in a pot right away. The potted one took a little bit more time to start up, but the main stem grew out much thicker and branches developed almost at he base. In the future, I think I'll just skip the water part, put the seeds in pots and cross my fingers.
Mine is about 6’ tall, with a few branches, but it’s a little spindly right now (it’s indoors in a pot, usually fills out when I bring it outside for the summer). I want to prune it but I’m worried about cutting too much off. I wish he had videos with older trees (mine is at least 8 years old).. instead of the tiny ones in his videos.
1 have 6 avacado trees,2 is 22 years old,4 is 15 years old, they're huge and about to touch the sky. They never flower,or bear any fruit,we used all sorts of fertilizers and the Jobe sticks, but no luck, I'm in Apopka Florida, we sometimes get a freeze but not often,we did this Dec and Jan.I noticed my 23 year old mango tree doing the same thing, the only thing give fruits are the lemon trees.
LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT. I had an avo pit sprout in my flower garden getting 3 hours or more of direct morning sun. It grew 2 shoots, both have leaves from top to soil level. It looks rough late mornings but perks back up once back in the shade. Mine is 3 months old and about 12" tall.
This is the first time I grow an indoor avocado or anything at all, it has around 9 months and it's 40cm tall but with around 10 leaves, each 20cm+. I've tried putting it outside for more sun but some leaves burned out and the wind is too strong so I put it inside again (very hot and humid weather). I haven't pruned it because I still can't psyche myself up to do it, but what it calls my attention is that the main trunk is still very green, I've been searching everywhere if is it normal to still have a green trunk but I haven't found anything yet. So, how long is it normal for avocado plants to have green trunks?
Well… what do I do if I’ve let my avocado grow for about 1,5 years and never cut it? Is it to late to cut i now? The tree is about 1,5 meters tall and the steem is quite thick (about half of the steem is coverd in big leafs but it keeps dropping them as the tree grows taller)
Maybe someone can share with me what to do with the part that has been "pruned off" (dont know if it's the right word for that). Should I just throw it away? Or can I try to plant it into another pot or something😅
Good afternoon Scott, question for you! I live in northern Florida in Jacksonville to be exact. I have started about 8 avocado seeds from the paper towel method and it has worked wonderfully. I have purchased a small green house from amazon and placed it on my back patio and placed two of the avocado plants in it. In one day they got fried. The green house is way too hot for any plants in there during this time of year in Florida. So I moved my green house into the back covered lanai (covered porch), where it's not in direct sunlight, and they are doing great. Most if not all were over 30cm long so yesterday I pruned them down above a node. Here's my question. Should I take out the avocado plants from time to time from the green house and place them outside to get the direct sunlight they need? Or are they good where they are at in the green house? Or should I move the green house to the screen in area where they would get more sunlight? I just don't want them to get fried again in this heat.
The Lord blessed the growth of the one I've got. It's 4.5 hands tall and the second from top leaves have branch shoots growing out strong. I'll be pruning is top to keep it short for it's indoor life.
I live in New Jersey. My avocado tree loves the summer months outdoors but is not too keen on indoor living during our winter/early spring months. What can I do to make her happier during the indoor months?
I have branches but they all god straight up so I am slowly bending them with a flexible metal string and floss ( the gummyness of it allow me to not tie it tight but still keep it securely attached to itself) The branches are quite flexible so i am just bending them, hope that they keep that shape and dont just look like a fork. It it right next to the most sunny window in my house, it's an est facing window ( house is straight facing west est, we have not window south or north) and it is still shooting straight up like a fork. The stem is still green and a bit smaller then an hdmi cord. There are multiple leafs at the bottom half then like 10 cm of nothing and boom ankther patches of multiple leaves and new branches since i cutted it.
I'm growing 4 avocadoes, one of them when growing, the steam broke, I thought it won't continue growing, to my surprise, 3 steams grew from the seed, I'll see how they go.
Quick question, I live in a northern climate. I'd like to move my new tree outside but wonder what temperature lows it can handle. We are entering early autumn.
Brilliant advice. Thanks Scott. When is the best time of Year to prune. I have started growing Avos outdoors and all are tall & lanky so Pruning required lol.
Lol, I was surprised by my trees growing tall but lanky, in a room with very little light. I have started trimming them and when they bud out, I will move them to a sunnier position. Thank you Scott for a common sense video about photosynthesis and what almost all plants crave, light!
Super helpful video. I do have a question, I don’t know if maybe I missed that point. I currently have one avocado plant (my first one) it’s 6 months old but it’s also very long (about 50cm/20 inch)and skinny with only 5 leaves at the top. My question is should I prune it now? Or just move it to brighter spot and wait to become older? Thanksss
If you're using pits from grocery store avocados, you should check if they've been sterilized (killed) during transport- I don't know where in the world you are, but where I am (USAmerica), avocados brought over the Mexican border are sterilized and cannot be sprouted (but avocados grown domestically in the district of California can be).
Did they ever grow? If not and you're trying again you could try putting them in a sandwich bag full of water in the sun. I've tried everything to grow some wrapped in paper towel, the 3 tooth picks in water and a lot more they've sprouted but never grew. When I put them in the baggies full of water in the sun they sprouted in less than 2weeks. Just put them in dirt once the pit split in half and the root was about an inch or two long
I am not an expert by any means, but my 10-15 year old avocado tree was getting tall and lanky without a lot of fruit. I decided to trim it last fall after the fruit had ripened probably around October or November . I live in the Central west coast of Florida. My tree responded very, very well from the pruning! I cut the height down by 2/3rds and pruned the ends off a lot on branches. The tree ended up being about 8-9 feet tall and quite wide after the pruning. This year I had the biggest crop of avocados that I have ever had. I think I probably had about 50 avocados on my tree this year and I am still eating them. I plan on trimming it some more after these fruit are all gone to keep it at a reasonable size. My advise it just do it!
I am in the same situation. If YOU in doubt, do what I do: Watch some bonsai videos before. They prune with no mercy AND the tree survives. This just helped me to cut down my Habanero trees for overwintering. :)
Thank you, that was very helpful. I have exactly that problem. Mine looks just like the one you showed. I have a question about repotting. It is now November and cool outside. Can I repot it now and prune it?
Ugh, that is the sad/scary part is pruning the baby started from the seed and temporarily having a 'stick' in a pot. LOL Too cold to grow an avocado tree outdoors here in the Pacific Northwest of USA and in the winter it is still a little chilly on the window ledge.
Hi Scott! I have a problem with my oldest avocado tree that I have indoors and that is the following: It is almost 6ft tall( I`ve never pruned it), it grew four branches, its leaves are big and cover basically the whole stem but it is super skinny and it cannot stand straight without a support. Here is my question: How much can I trim from it without killing it?? Should I transplant it to a bigger pot too? Right now it is in a 11" pot. Anyone who can give me an advice about my case, I would appreciate it! Thanks!
You might already know this but in case you don't - don't repot and prune at the same time/close after each other! Both pruning and repotting is a "traumatic" thing for the plant, so in my experience for the best chances of them thriving then give it at least 1-3 months before doing the other thing. I would prune it first, wait around 1-3 months and depending on how fast it grows - like if it's taking off and thriving I'd feel alright repotting after a month, if it's slower I'd wait another month or two. And for pruning, I'd probably prune it back quite a bit actually, it might feel horrible but it will bounce back, I'd cut off maybe 2ft and see if that helps. Since it's already so large it's harder to prune it back to a point where it'll grow thick and hold itself well, so it might turn out that you notice that it's still not holding it's weight after a year, then I'd prune it again halfway from the last prune. Hope you are your avocado tree all the best!
Hey Scott, Jackie here from Houston TX,. I have 8 avocado trees growing in water. They appear the exact same way as the avocado tree you showed in your video. I want to prune them but I love their leaves and I just can't because afraid I'll be cutting at the wrong spot and or they won't grow anymore. They're all about over 12 inches tall. If I prune them now would I be able to have them regrow again? Planning to move them out when it gets a bit warmer down here. Thank you again.
Should I prune my avocado before I plant it or after I plant it. It has been growing for about a month but it's super tall and the leaves are growing and the stem is growing. The roots are now longer than the vase is tall. Should I plant it and then trim it should I trim it and wait I don't know what to do
How long do I keep my plants in the Sun and should I just keep it in the latest room for it's warm. Also I put a stick with copper wire wrapped around it. Put it in the dirt like a antenna. Is that ok.
I've never pruned a tree before but started some avocado seeds a few months ago. It's winter in MI and they're about 2' tall now. Have been waiting until spring to try and prune them. My question when you prune them do you cut all the leaves off or do you have to leave some for it to grow? After you prune it once do you have to continue to prune it to avoid the same problem? Last question. I also started to grow some mango trees about 2 weeks ago they just sprouted. Not sure if you know about those but do you prune those the same way as an avocado tree? Thank you! Your videos were super helpful
Yes, you continue to prune just like other trees. Pruning encourages branching out at the nodes. The branches should grow (two or more), once they are 6-8 inches, prune them all again. More pruning at all branches encourages a bushier tree with many limbs. Think oak tree vs very tall spindly royal palm tree.
Hey Scott! Was just given a four foot fall avocado tree from a freed who grew it from seed. It’s tall and slender with NO branches and all the leaves on top. Is there anything I can do to help her?
Good day, my very first avocado seed is 2 years old now and this is its 3rd summer and its growing well. But I want to know if I can manipulate avocado plants into growing faster. Thicker and just overall faster. So now I am going to make some new avocado seeds and they will be growing differently. Different soil different amount of light. Different fertilizer etc. I just want to know everything about avocados and about the manipulation of avocados.
My plant was hacked two days ago April 3, 2022. It was 36" tall with 7 leaves and new growth at the top. I sits near a sunny window with venetian blind slates opened. According to this video I should have cut it back lower. I'll wait to see what happens to this plant to see if it grows OUT. I have three pitts sitting in water. I hope to not have to go through this silly skinny tall stem again. I'm thinking of moving my one arm LED grow light to this room, hover it over the plant, but turn it off come summer.
here in (northern)Germany my avocados took off nicely when put outside into my garden, later in the greenhouse and just spending wintertime indoors.... Just took them in yesterday bc nights are getting too cold for them and the leafes take damage
How far should you cut it? Mine is slender and I’ve pruned it once and now it has one additional branch growing. Should I prune it lower and risk the branch that is growing?
Trying to grow a bonsai avocado tree. From this video, I realize that it’s not getting enough light. We live in a fairly small house. The only room that gets a lot of light is the bathroom and there’s not a lot of space for a plant of any size, really…🤷♀️
I have an avo tree that's maybe 6 months old. It's doing awesome but the bottom leaves are now staying close to the trunk. They used to extend outward. It's very healthy looking. The leaves are big and beautiful and plenty of them. Should I even be concerned?
Sondont trim the huge leaves, but cut the plant as a whole... should I start rooting the top I cut off while the other thats planted keeps growing its leave!?! I wish I could post a picture to show whats going on!!! Lolz

I haven't cut my avocado once, since I started it from seed, 3 years ago, I guess? before covid for sure, probably 4. I did however drop something on it in the dark, and broke it off, back in the day, when it was like 3 cm tall. it started a new shoot. i't about a meter tall now... hold on.. yeah, about a meter. But unlike the one you're showing, mine is very leafy, growing outside. I know I need to cut it, but if I do, and it does branch out, I won't have a place for it... so I don't know what to do... and my main reason for coming here is cause it's june now, and I don't know if it's a good idea to do it at this time of year... my previous, unsuccessful attempts to grow avocado, whenever I did cut it, it just started a new leader, and was very much like yours, few leaves on top and that's it.
I have 2 avocados i have been growing. I had no idea i should have pruned them when they were small! They are very tall and skinny. One has leaves all over it (some near the bottom have brown tips)and the other has one big cluster of leaves on top making it super top heavy. Ive had then growing from seed about 2 years, in pots with soil maybe a year. Should i still prune them? And where? I feel like such a dummy.

You know I used to grow avocado plants like nothing but lately they just dont even sprout anymore. I get my avocadoes from the store then implant the seeds, do you think they are doing something to the seeds now days? Specially with the rise price in avocados. I just really wonder...

Fire vid man!
Always nice with a friendly and chill deep-dive guide😁
This is the first time I grow an indoor avocado or anything at all, it has around 9 months and it's 40cm tall but with around 10 leaves, each 20cm+. I've tried putting it outside for more sun but some leaves burned out and the wind is too strong so I put it inside again (very hot and humid weather).
I haven't pruned it because I still can't psyche myself up to do it, but what it calls my attention is that the main trunk is still very green, I've been searching everywhere if is it normal to still have a green trunk but I haven't found anything yet. So, how long is it normal for avocado plants to have green trunks?
I so love your videos on Avocados. We all had avocado trees in Africa. Wish I could find out a way to grow avocados in the Uk where I now live.
What month should you prune in? Thanks for the video, very informative
My preference is when there’s still plenty of growing season to go. Spring and early summer 🥑🪴
@@ScottGrowsanAvocadoTree thank you so much
Well… what do I do if I’ve let my avocado grow for about 1,5 years and never cut it?
Thank you for your insightful video. I really enjoyed the lessons Scoot.
Thank you for these tips im going to prune my tree.
Hi Scott, all of the branches on my 5' tall, 2 yr old avocado tree are seriously drooping. Is this OK? Thanks for the great videos.
I have branches but they all god straight up so I am slowly bending them with a flexible metal string and floss ( the gummyness of it allow me to not tie it tight but still keep it securely attached to itself)
The branches are quite flexible so i am just bending them, hope that they keep that shape and dont just look like a fork.
Mine is still too small to prune but this will be helpful for the future!
I looked at a pit I threw away in the trash and thought about growing my own avocados. This is my third avocado video I'm saving
Great advise ! You solved my problem .
Quick question, I live in a northern climate. I'd like to move my new tree outside but wonder what temperature lows it can handle. We are entering early autumn.
They can handle below freezing temps, but not much below.
If it gets to 20°F or lower, it might be done for.
@BB-yj2rb thank you. I'll wait until after the last frost in Spring to set it outside. All my potted plants are now nestled inside for the winter.
Thank you! Ima start pruning
Thanksss
Super helpful video. Thanks so much!!!
I'll definitely be using these tips....
when my avocado pit sprouts eventually 😭😭
Sometimes it takes tiiiime 😅
Just put them in dirt once the pit split in half and the root was about an inch or two long
My avocado tree is about 4-5 years. Have never pruned it. Can I still prune it?
Yeah, I wanna know, too;
I am not an expert by any means, but my 10-15 year old avocado tree was getting tall and lanky without a lot of fruit.
Yeah but do it before spring
I am in the same situation. If YOU in doubt, do what I do: Watch some bonsai videos before. They prune with no mercy AND the tree survives. This just helped me to cut down my Habanero trees for overwintering. :)
when you prune this are you basically left with just the trunks and no leaves until they grow back? Or do you leave some leaves for photosynthesis?
What is the best soil for avocado plants? And when should you prune?
Thanks for the advice! I was worried about pruning my avoca😊do tree too much! Now I feel confident!
Thank you, that was very helpful. I have exactly that problem. Mine looks just like the one you showed. I have a question about repotting. It is now November and cool outside. Can I repot it now and prune it?
Great video! Thanks for the top advice.
Ugh, that is the sad/scary part is pruning the baby started from the seed and temporarily having a 'stick' in a pot. LOL
Too cold to grow an avocado tree outdoors here in the Pacific Northwest of USA and in the winter it is still a little chilly on the window ledge.
Thanks man! Nicely explained.
@@emmaarvidsson1953Mine is the same as the person you replied to. When pruning like this, do you mean it will have no leaves after you prune?
Hey Scott, Jackie here from Houston TX,. I have 8 avocado trees growing in water. They appear the exact same way as the avocado tree you showed in your video. I want to prune them but I love their leaves and I just can't because afraid I'll be cutting at the wrong spot and or they won't grow anymore. They're all about over 12 inches tall. If I prune them now would I be able to have them regrow again? Planning to move them out when it gets a bit warmer down here. Thank you again.
Love your videos! Very helpful. Thank you!
Is that ok.
I wish I had locks like yours :)
Nice one but a bit lenghty.. I would like where to make the prune cut, can it be done with a watergrown plant or does it abve to be soiled..?
Best explanation thankyou
I have leaves growing all over the stem do and it's tall as well. Do I need to still cut it?
Do you need to prune more than once?
What part of the year you recommend doing this drastic pruning to reduce height?
Do you remember what kind of avocado the pit came from the one you show here on this vid?
How far should you cut it? Mine is slender and I’ve pruned it once and now it has one additional branch growing. Should I prune it lower and risk the branch that is growing?
I think I trimmed my avacado tree too late it's 4 yrs old. It's dying at the top where I cut it. There does seem to be a limb lower on the trunk help
My meristem on one of my trees has died but the stem is still green is there still hope for the plant? It also has no leaves..
Thank you Scott!
Always a pleasure! Thanks for watching ☺️🥑🪴
Lolz
mine broke very early on and the node started growing has many leaves now at about 50 cm but no branches 7 big leaves high and i do not dare to prune it it is my 1st nice growing plant standing on the kitchen table good light, to cold outside still and very windy ,i'm in amsterdam
If I have a tall and skinny avocado tree that is only a few months old should I still prune it even if it has about 15 leaves at the top?
Keep up the good work!
I don’t know if I’m doing it too much sunlight too much water, but down in Florida. It was so easy to grow avocado tree up here in Quincy ma. It’s almost impossible. Why
Great video as always!
Thanks Dave! ☺️🥑
Have any of your seed grown avocado trees produced fruit yet? If so what age and how many?
Cheers
Needs 10-15 years to grow fruit
@@mariadiamantopoulou1185 mine produced 50 at 8 years old.
You know I used to grow avocado plants like nothing but lately they just dont even sprout anymore. I get my avocadoes from the store then implant the seeds, do you think they are doing something to the seeds now days? Specially with the rise price in avocados. I just really wonder...
Hello Scot ! I watched most of your videos. I need your help. May I send you the avocado picture? Please
Hey Scott....would you recommend just pinching off the top apicol stem as a way of plants bush out a bit?
I sure would! A good way of getting it to thicken up ☺️
If never pruned and given enough light, will they eventually thicken up?
Scott! Your hair!! 😍 Out here looking like a shampoo commercial
Thanks Holly! You’re too much 🤭💁🏼♀️✨
Plant directly into the ground mounded with shade cloth and plenty of manure and compost
Hi I have a avocado tree that I started by seed its probably 4' tall and has never branched I did try pruning it but it just made it grow crooked , so I never did it again but it's leaves are huge! I do have it staked. But don't know what else to do with it...
Are you sure someone at the nursery has not removed all the lower leaves to encourage upward growth and discourage spread?
How cold is too cold to keep avocado tree on a closed in porch and if moved inside what are some suggest for providing more light if there is not enough?
I just bought a 7 foot hass avocado tree on line. It's tall and skinny and just a few single leaves growing out the main trunk every 10 inches or so. How can I stop it from growing tall without killing it?
