  • This week we are looking at how to fix an overwatered Avocado plant. This plant belongs to my son and it is looking very sorry for itself. For new gardeners it is often very difficult to tell the difference between underwatered symptoms and overwatered symptoms - in both cases the leaves wilt. However if you continue to examine the plant you will see brown tips and also leaf curling - typical signs in this type of plant. To confirm diagnosis, go down to the soil itself and have a feel around - is the surface wet or damp? 1 inch down - is the story the same - is it wet/damp. if it is wet your problem is definitely related to overwatering. However the causes can be studied later - the most important thing is to get it out of that sodden medium and get it repotted into new drier soil with good drainage. When I transplant something and have no idea what to expect under the soil, I always start feeling around for roots from the outside of the pot inwards. In the end the root system was very small and I could lift it with my hands. I cut away some soft roots and then replanted the plant and watered it in. Then I cut it down to about half of its height just above a leaf node. This plant must be placed in bright light (or grow lights) and fingers crossed new leaves should appear from the leaf nodes below the cut in the stem.
My recommendation for new gardeners especially is to try and save plants - you might not win everytime but you learn a huge amount on the journey.
