Great video! For new gardeners, this pretty much applies to *most* grafted fruit trees (ie. mangoes, avocadoes, citrus etc.) - if there's new growth/suckers *below the graft*.... remove them! As this will be the parent/root stock variety and not your grafted variety.
Always fun learning from you. I wish to heck I could remember who was telling me just this past week that their avocado tree was not producing so I can share this with them. Hopefully they’re on Facebook
i understand why it is necesarry to remove the suckers, however I have one avocado tree that has undergone some peculiar situation. after we bought and planted the grafted avocado, it got extremely sunburned for a extended period of time, it lost like 95% of its leaves, even the trunk/stem got miscolored and on deaths door. 3 years have passed and it never regrew a single leaf on the grafted part, but it did sprout vigorous suckers which are thriving right now. to my surprise the sickly looking graft started flowering this year and it is fruiting even though it has like no leaves at all. my question is, would it be wise to remove the suckers from this tree?
If the grafted part looks strong enough and has enough leaves, then you could remove the suckers, but if the grafted part is still struggling, you’d want to leave some of the rootstock branches to support the trees overall growth. You could also prune back all but one branch of the root stock and have a tree that’s half grafted and half root stock like I have on my property because the route stock could still make fruit. You just don’t know what kind since Avocados are not true to seed
It's beautiful, i have a question? I live in Virginia &It's july &hot . I didn't realize that it must be a sucker growing about 8 in. High from the tree so i left it &now I'm thinking it's a sucker so can i cut that off in July in Virginia or do i wait for fall . Thank you & enjoy your beautiful farm . Can't wait to see the pond . 🥰
My Hass tree has a sucker growing right at the graft (not below or above)… I didn’t know if it’s safe to cut. Please help me! :( Only my small main branch has fruited this year. The sucker is growing larger than the main branch, about double in size, with no fruit.
I’ve got a branch above the graft union but it’s taking off like a sucker and exceeded the height of all the other branches in its first year. Is this just it establishing a new leader? The tree is about 3 -4 years in ground.
I would have grafted onto that huge growing rootstock with a piece of scionwood from that same tree. Graft onto those suckers with good budwood from great varieties.
How wonderful to have the land for all those trees. Very glad your video popped up, I hadn't realized that avocado trees needed suckered removed.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful knowledge.
Great video!

If it’s growing larger on the main branch then it’s likely to be the root stock and you should cut it off so that the plant can focus on the top part
@@chefmollie thank you! I'll wait until winter to cut
Look like rootstock sucker are strong, can you graft or air layering onto them and have beautiful nice tree🌳 ?
Yes, you can graft onto a root stock if the top has died off
@@chefmollie thank you chefmollie
I had no idea that avocados grow suckers! Thank you for this video! Does this apply to avocado trees grown directly from seed?
Did you not listen to the video:) The suckers are from the root stock
Who knows, those rootstocks avocado might be delicious I mean it is a fruit they used to eat a lot
Most fruit trees are on route stock and so it would be true for an apple as well
Yep! Just like tomatoes they have axillary buds that produces offshoots and pull energy away from the main stem
thanks for tip, i have also heard that zutano seedling is really good for clay dirt from another youtuber.
Can you graft a different type of avocado variety onto the sucker. For example if you have a type A tree could you graft a type B onto the sucker?
Yes
Any update on these chillies avocados? Are they eatable, taste etc pls
That what exactly what i need to ask
Sorry for the late response they were edible and they have no seed inside of them they were unfertilized
@@chefmollie wow safe to say seedless avocado
Good Intel. Thank you.
🥑🥑🥑👩🏻🌾
Can you plant the large branch you cut off?
No

It would be hard for me to tell without seeing it
Same here. Grafted Hass, just above the graft there is another growth looks healthier and stronger than original graft.
How can I send you a picture?
Present to Listen 🥑🙏👍
Hope you enjoy
Hope you enjoy

That would’ve been awesome
صباح الخير والحب..سيدتي ، هل يجب ان تطعم شجرة الافكادوا ، لكي تعطي انتاج جيد؟
How did those little ones end up tasting?
They tasted like Avocados, but a little watery and no seed
I would just graft on to the sucker, a lot of gain no loss take the time
That’s could work
We actually have a big root sucker on our Fuerte tree!
Cut it off so that the energy can go into the tree that you want
Those pickle shaped avocados are unfertilized avocados. They’re edible but have a small seed. Try the honey water technique on the blooms.
These avocados did not have a seed inside of them. They were not pollinated, but still edible!
How do you keep something from eating your avocado 🥑?
Dogs
Would be nice if camera showed more of the graft to see while you cut it
I will try to do another grafting video
Tq.
Wow
Did you ever figure out what the "chili pepper" avocados tasted like? Or when to pick them?
It tasted like a bacon avocado kind of it was more watery than oily
Where are you located
Fillmore California
My giant Fuerte avocado puts out those suckers constantly..yes break them off.
💚🙏
🙏🏼
suckers are good for cross pollination of a single tree
Yes it could be good but usually it’s stronger than the grafted portion of the tree and you’re taking away energy
For the fruit bearing tree

Bisa kah aku kerja disana kak? Terimakasih
Mosquitoes from the pond….these are blood suckers.😊
Except your camera person didn’t show me what you were talking about. Below the graft…..no footage. 🤔
Sorry about that
Ok
